BACKGROUND: Influenza virus-induced pneumonia (IVP) is an infectious pulmonary disease characterized by exacerbated pulmonary inflammation caused by invasion of the influenza virus. IVP continues to threaten public health due to its high morbidity and mortality rates. Geniposide is one of the major bioactive constituents of G. jasminoides, which exerts antiviral and anti-inflammatory effects on influenza A virus (IAV) infection. PURPOSE: To investigate therapeutic effects and comprehensive mechanisms of geniposide on IAV infection and subsequent pneumonia. METHODS: ICR mice were infected intranasally with H1N1 (A/FM/1/47) to detect the anti-IAV activity of geniposide. Proteomics combined with function-integrated analysis were conducted to gain insight into the comprehensive mechanisms of geniposide. Subsequently, western blot was used to detect the phosphorylation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (STAT1), signal transducer and activator of transcription 2 (STAT2), Interferon regulatory factor 9 (IRF9) and Janus kinase 1 (JAK1) in Janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/STAT) signaling pathway in lung tissue. Finally, RT-qPCR was used to detect the levels of interleukin 6 (IL-6), interleukin 17 (IL-17), interferon-γ (IFN-γ) and the STAT1 inhibitor (fludarabine) was used to verify the targeting between STAT1 and geniposide in RAW cells. RESULTS: Geniposide could significantly reduce the lung index, diminish lung pathology, decrease the virus loads and the inflammatory cytokines expression induced by IAV infection. A total of 411 differentially expressed proteins were identified among control, model, and geniposide-treated group in proteomic analysis. According to function-integrated analysis, 15 KEGG pathways were enriched and divided into 9 groups (modules), including influenza A, NOD-like receptor signaling, RIG-I-like receptor signaling, and so on. Among these modules, the most intensely interacting module pair was the NOD-like receptor signaling and influenza A, in which STAT1 and STAT2 acted as hubs with critical bridgeness role in the target network of geniposide. This indicated that geniposide may mitigate inflammation and alleviate IVP by JAK/STAT signaling pathways. Moreover, validation experiments confirmed that geniposide can significantly inhibit STAT1 and STAT2 phosphorylation as well as down-regulated expression of IL-6, IFN-γ and IL-17 in lung. Furthermore, when RAW cells were treated with the STAT1 inhibitor (fludarabine), the inhibitory effect of geniposide on IFN-γ and IL-6 was attenuated significantly. CONCLUSIONS: Geniposide can attenuate IAV-induced pneumonia by regulating inflammatory cytokines production through the JAK/STAT pathway.

Metalens, characterized by their unique functions and distinctive physical properties, have gained significant attention for their potential applications. To further optimize the performance of metalens, it is necessary to characterize the phase modulation of the metalens. In this study, we present a multi-distance phase retrieval system based on optical field scanning and discuss its convergence and robustness. Our findings indicate that the system is capable of retrieving the phase distribution of the metalens as long as the measurement noise is low and the total length of the scanned light field is sufficiently long. This system enables the analysis of focal length and aberration by utilizing the computed phase distribution. We extend our investigation to measure the phase distribution of the metalens operating in the near-infrared (NIR) spectrum and identify the impact of defects in the sample on the phase. Additionally, we conduct a comparative analysis of the phase distribution of the metalens in air and ethanol and observe the variations in the phase modulation of the metalens in different working mediums. Our system provides a straightforward method for the phase characterization of metalens, aiding in optimizing the metalens design and functionality.

Background: Death caused by respiratory tract infection is one of the leading causes of death in the world today. Shufeng Jiedu Capsule (SFJDC) is a traditional Chinese medicine that has been widely used clinically for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), H1N1 influenza virus pneumonia and other diseases. Its pharmacological effect is to inhibit inflammation and improve the body's ability to clear viruses. However, the mechanism of SFJDC in the treatment of viral pneumonia, especially its effect on the inflammatory-immune microenvironment of lung tissue remains unclear. Methods: Mice with H1N1 influenza virus pneumonia were used as a model to verify the efficacy of SFJDC through death protection, lung index, viral load, and HE staining of lung tissue. The levels of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines in lung tissue were investigated by multi-analyte immunoassay. The number and proportion of cells in peripheral blood were detected by blood routine. The percentage of infiltrating immune cells in lung tissue was detected by flow cytometry and immunofluorescence. Results: SFJDC (2.2 g/kg·d-1 and 1.1 g/kg·d-1) increased survival rate (P<0.01, P<0.05), prolonged the survival period of mice, and alleviated the histopathological damage in lung (P<0.01). SFJDC (2.2 g/kg·d-1, 1.1 g/kg·d-1 and 0.055 g/kg·d-1) increased body weight(P<0.01, P<0.05), improved activity status, reduced the lung index (P<0.01, P<0.05) and viral load (P<0.01). SFJDC (2.2 g/kg·d-1 and 1.1 g/kg·d-1) reduced interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), interleukin-18(IL-18), tumour necrosis factor α (TNF-α), monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP), chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 1 (CXCL1) (P<0.01, P<0.05), and SFJDC (2.2 g/kg·d-1) increased IL-10 levels (P<0.05) to regulate inflammation. SFJDC (2.2 g/kg·d-1) increased the percentages of CD4+ T cells (P<0.01), CD8+ T cells (P<0.05), and B cells(P<0.05), and decreased F4/80+ macrophages (P<0.05). Conclusion: Our findings indicated that SFJDC could inhibit inflammation and lung injury while maintaining the function of the adaptive immune response mediated by T and B cells, and promote the clearance of the virus, thereby treating influenza A (H1N1) virus-induced pneumonia.

Intestinal epithelium constitutes a barrier to the unrestricted movement of pathogens, and other detrimental substances from the external world (gut lumen) into the interstitial environment. Intestinal epithelial cells obstruct harmful substances passing through the epithelium as a physical and chemical barrier; Moreover, the epithelial cells can express Toll-like receptors (TLRs) and cytokines to exert innate immune function. In addition, high levels of immunoglobulin A (IgA) and other antibodies exist in the intestinal mucosa, maintaining intestinal immune homeostasis in conjunction with intestinal probiotics. Traditionally, these antibodies have been deemed to be secreted by submucosal plasma cells. Nonetheless, in recent years, it has been demonstrated that intestinal epithelial cells produce a substantial amount of Igs, especially IgA or free Ig light chains, which are involved in intestinal immune homeostasis and the survival of normal epithelial cells. Furthermore, mounting evidence affirms that many human carcinoma cells, including colorectal cancer (CRC), can overexpress Igs, particularly IgG. Cancer-derived Igs exhibit a unique V(D)J rearrangement pattern distinct from B cell-derived Ig; moreover, this cancer cell-derived IgG also has a unique sialic acid modification on the 162 site of CH1 domain (SIA-IgG). The SIA-IgG plays a crucial role in promoting cancer initiation, progression, metastasis, and tumour immune escape. Simultaneously, CRC cells can also express free Ig light chains, which promote colitis, colitis-associated colon carcinogenesis, and CRC progression. Therefore, Igs expressed by CRC cells could be a potential target for diagnosing and preventing the transformation of inflammation into cancer, as well as treating CRC.

RESUMEN

Real-time tracking and 3D trajectory computation of fast-moving objects is a promising technology, especially in the field of autonomous driving. However, existing image-based tracking methods face significant challenges when it comes to real-time tracking, primarily due to the limitation of storage space and computational resources. Here, we propose a novel approach that enables real-time 3D tracking of a fast-moving object without any prior motion information and at a very low computational cost. To enable 3D coordinate synthesis with a space-efficient optical setup, geometric moment patterns are projected on two non-orthogonal planes with a spatial resolution of 125 µm. Our experiment demonstrates an impressive tracking speed of 6667 frames per second (FPS) with a 20 kHz digital micromirror device (DMD), which is more than 200 times faster than the widely adopted video-based tracking methods. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest tracking speed record in the field of single-pixel 3D trajectory tracking. This method promotes the development of real-time tracking techniques with single-pixel imaging (SPI).

PURPOSE: This study explored the use of an automated language analysis tool, FLUCALC, for measuring fluency in aphasia. The purpose was to determine whether CLAN's FLUCALC command could produce efficient, objective outcome measures for salient aspects of fluency in aphasia. METHOD: The FLUCALC command was used on CHAT transcripts of Cinderella stories from people with aphasia (PWA; n = 281) and controls (n = 257) in the AphasiaBank database. RESULTS: PWA produced significantly fewer total words, fewer words per minute, more pausing, more repetitions, more revisions, and more phonological fragments than controls, with only one exception: The Wernicke's group was similar to the control group in percentage of filled pauses. Individuals with Broca's aphasia had significantly longer inter-utterance pauses and fewer total words than all other aphasia groups. Both the Broca's and conduction aphasia groups had higher percentages of phrase repetitions than the NABW (NotAphasicByWAB) group. The conduction aphasia group also had a higher percentage of phrase revisions than the NABW and the anomic aphasia groups. Principal components analysis revealed two principal components that accounted for around 60% of the variance and related to quantity of output, rate of speech, and quality of output. The Gaussian mixture models showed that the participants clustered in three groups, which corresponded predominantly to the controls, the nonfluent aphasia group, and the remaining aphasia groups (all classically fluent aphasia types). CONCLUSIONS: FLUCALC is an efficient way to measure objective fluency behaviors in language samples in aphasia. Automated analyses of objective fluency behaviors on large samples of adults with and without aphasia can produce measures that can be used by researchers and clinicians to better understand and track salient aspects of fluency in aphasia. Compromises between enhanced on-targeting reactivity and precise real-time monitoring in the tumor microenvironment (TME) are the main roadblocks for catalytic cancer therapy. The hallmark of a high level of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and acidic extracellular environment of the hypoxia solid tumor can underpin therapeutic and tracking performance. Herein, this work provides an activatable wintersweet-like nanohybrid consisting of titanium (Ti) doped cerium vanadate nanorods with the modification of polypyrrole (PPy) nanoparticles (CeVO4-Ti@PPy) for combinatorial therapies of breast carcinoma. The Ti dopants in the size-controllable CeVO4 nanorods lower the energy barrier (0.5 eV) of the rate-determining steps and elaborate peroxidase-like (POD-like) activities to improve the generation of toxic hydroxyl radical (·OH) according to the density functional theory (DFT) calculation. The multiple enzyme-like activities, including the intrinsic glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and catalase (CAT), achieve a record-high therapeutic efficiency. Coupling this oxidative stress with the photothermal effects of PPy enables enhanced catalytic tumor necrosis. The exterior PPy heterogeneous structure can be further doped with protons in the local acidic environment to intensify photoacoustic signals, allowing the non-invasive accurate tracking of tumors. The theranostic performance displayed negligible attenuated signals in near-infrared (NIR) windows. This organic-inorganic nanohybrid with a heterogeneous structure provides the potential to improve the overall outcomes of catalytic therapy.

Recent advances in learning-based computer-generated holography (CGH) have unlocked novel possibilities for crafting phase-only holograms. However, existing approaches primarily focus on the learning ability of network modules, often neglecting the impact of diffraction propagation models. The resulting ringing artifacts, emanating from the Gibbs phenomenon in the propagation model, can degrade the quality of reconstructed holographic images. To this end, we explore a diffraction propagation error-compensation network that can be easily integrated into existing CGH methods. This network is designed to correct propagation errors by predicting residual values, thereby aligning the diffraction process closely with an ideal state and easing the learning burden of the network. Simulations and optical experiments demonstrate that our method, when applied to state-of-the-art HoloNet and CCNN, achieves PSNRs of up to 32.47 dB and 29.53 dB, respectively, surpassing baseline methods by 3.89 dB and 0.62 dB. Additionally, real-world experiments have confirmed a significant reduction in ringing artifacts. We envision this approach being applied to a variety of CGH algorithms, paving the way for improved holographic displays.

Zinc finger-homeodomain transcription factors (ZF-HDs) are pivotal in regulating plant growth, development, and diverse stress responses. In this study, we found 8 ZF-HD genes in barley genome. Theses eight HvZF-HD genes were located on five chromosomes, and classified into ZHD and MIF subfamily. The collinearity, gene structure, conserved motif, and cis-elements of HvZF-HD genes were also analyzed. Real-time PCR results suggested that the expression of HvZF-HD4, HvZF-HD6, HvZF-HD7 and HvZF-HD8 were up-regulated after hormones (ABA, GA3 and MeJA) or PEG treatments, especially HvZF-HD6 was significantly induced. These results provide useful information of ZF-HD genes to future study aimed at barley breeding.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Accurate recognition of endoscopic instruments facilitates quantitative evaluation and quality control of endoscopic procedures. However, no relevant research has been reported. In this study, we aimed to develop a computer-assisted system, EndoAdd, for automated endoscopic surgical video analysis based on our dataset of endoscopic instrument images. METHODS: Large training and validation datasets containing 45,143 images of 10 different endoscopic instruments and a test dataset of 18,375 images collected from several medical centers were used in this research. Annotated image frames were used to train the state-of-the-art object detection model, YOLO-v5, to identify the instruments. Based on the frame-level prediction results, we further developed a hidden Markov model to perform video analysis and generate heatmaps to summarize the videos. RESULTS: EndoAdd achieved high accuracy (>97%) on the test dataset for all 10 endoscopic instrument types. The mean average accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score were 99.1%, 92.0%, 88.8%, and 89.3%, respectively. The area under the curve values exceeded 0.94 for all instrument types. Heatmaps of endoscopic procedures were generated for both retrospective and real-time analyses. CONCLUSIONS: We successfully developed an automated endoscopic video analysis system, EndoAdd, which supports retrospective assessment and real-time monitoring. It can be used for data analysis and quality control of endoscopic procedures in clinical practice.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Endoscopic resection has been successfully used for the removal of digestive submucosal tumors (SMTs). However, the cardia has been considered a challenging location for endoscopic resection due to its narrow lumen and sharp angle. The objective of this study was to establish a clinical scoring model to grade the technical difficulty of endoscopic resection for cardial SMTs. METHODS: A total of 246 patients who suffered cardial SMTs and received endoscopic resection were included in this retrospective study. All of them were randomized into the training cohort (n = 123) or internal validation cohort (n = 123). Potential predictors were analyzed using univariate analysis. Then, covariates with P < 0.05 were selected for the multivariate logistic regression model. The ß coefficients from the logistic regression model were used to create a scoring system for technical difficulty prediction by rounding the score to the nearest integer of the absolute ß coefficient value. RESULTS: The clinical score consisted of the following factors: male gender (2 points), extraluminal growth (3 points), and maximum diameter ≥3 cm (3 points). The scoring model demonstrated good discriminatory power, with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.860 and a 95% confidence interval of 0.763-0.958. The model also showed a good goodness of fit in the Hosmer-Lemeshow test (P = 0.979). In the training cohort, the probability of encountering technical difficulty in the easy (score = 0), intermediate (score = 1-3), difficult (score = 4-6), and very difficult (score >6) categories was 0, 6.8%, 33.3%, and 100.0%, respectively; similarly, in the validation cohort, it was 0, 5.6%, 22.2%, and 50.0%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This scoring system could serve as a valuable tool for clinicians in predicting the technical difficulty of endoscopic resection for cardial SMTs.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are globally prevalent infectious diseases, predominantly caused by uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC). The misuse of antibiotics has led to the emergence of several drug-resistant strains. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has its own advantages in the treatment of UTIs. HJ granules is a herbal formula used for the treatment of UTIs. However, its mechanism of action is not clear. AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of this study was to investigate the therapeutic efficacy and mechanism of action of HJ granules in a rat model of UTI caused by Escherichia coli (E coli) CFT073. MATERIALS AND METHODS: SD rats were selected to establish a rat UTI model by injecting UPEC strain CFT073 into the bladder using the transurethral placement method. HJ granules were administered to rats after modelling and the efficacy of HJ granule was investigated by measuring urinary decanalogue, inflammatory factors in bladder tissue and pathological changes in the bladder after 3d of administration. Expression of sonic hedgehog (SHH), NOD-like receptor thermoprotein domain 3 (NLRP3), apoptosis-associated speck-like protein (ASC) and activation of cysteinyl aspartate specific proteinase-1 (caspase-1) were detected by western blotting and immunofluorescence staining in rat bladder tissue. NLRP3, ASC and caspase-1, a cysteine-containing aspartic protein, were expressed and activated. RESULTS: The results showed that infection of rats with UPEC resulted in increased pH and erythrocytes in bladder irrigation fluid; increased expression of IL-1ß, IL-6 and SHH and decreased expression of IL-10 in bladder tissue; and significant upregulation of the expression of both SHH and NLRP3 inflammasom and significant activation of NLRP3 inflammasom. HJ granules significantly increased the concentration of IL-10 in the bladder, inhibited the expression of SHH and NLRP3 inflammasom in bladder tissue, and suppressed the activation of NLRP3 inflammasom, thereby reducing inflammatory lesions in bladder tissue. CONCLUSION: HJ granules may improve bladder injury and treat UTIs by inhibiting the expression and activation of NLRP3 inflammasom.

BACKGROUND: Calcifying fibrous tumors (CFTs) are rare mesenchymal lesions that can occur in various sites throughout the body, including the tubular gastrointestinal (GI) tract. AIM: To analyze the clinical findings of 36 patients with GI tract CFTs to provide guidance for diagnosis and treatment. METHODS: This retrospective study included 36 patients diagnosed with CFTs of the GI tract. We collected demographic and clinical information and conducted regular follow-ups to assess for local recurrence. RESULTS: The stomach was the most commonly involved site, accounting for 72.2% of the 36 CFTs. Endoscopic mucosal resection (n = 1, 2.8%), endoscopic submucosal dissection (n = 14, 38.9%), endoscopic full-thickness resection (n = 16, 44.4%), and submucosal tunneling endoscopic resection (n = 5, 13.9%) were used to resect calcifying fibrous tumors. Overall, 34 (94.4%) CFTs underwent complete endoscopic resections with a mean procedure time of 39.8 ± 29.8 min. The average maximum diameter of the tumors was 10.6 ± 4.3 cm. No complications, such as bleeding or perforation, occurred during an average hospital stay of 2.9 ± 1.2 d. In addition, two patients developed new growth of CFTs near the primary tumor sites, and none of the patients developed distant metastases during the follow-up period. CONCLUSION: GI tract CFTs are rare and typically benign tumors that can be effectively managed with endoscopic procedures.

BACKGROUND: Gastric cystica profunda (GCP) represents a rare condition characterized by cystic dilation of gastric glands within the mucosal and/or submucosal layers. GCP is often linked to, or may progress into, early gastric cancer (EGC). AIM: To provide a comprehensive evaluation of the endoscopic features of GCP while assessing the efficacy of endoscopic treatment, thereby offering guidance for diagnosis and treatment. METHODS: This retrospective study involved 104 patients with GCP who underwent endoscopic resection. Alongside demographic and clinical data, regular patient follow-ups were conducted to assess local recurrence. RESULTS: Among the 104 patients diagnosed with GCP who underwent endoscopic resection, 12.5% had a history of previous gastric procedures. The primary site predominantly affected was the cardia (38.5%, n = 40). GCP commonly exhibited intraluminal growth (99%), regular presentation (74.0%), and ulcerative mucosa (61.5%). The leading endoscopic feature was the mucosal lesion type (59.6%, n = 62). The average maximum diameter was 20.9 ± 15.3 mm, with mucosal involvement in 60.6% (n = 63). Procedures lasted 73.9 ± 57.5 min, achieving complete resection in 91.3% (n = 95). Recurrence (4.8%) was managed via either surgical intervention (n = 1) or through endoscopic resection (n = 4). Final pathology confirmed that 59.6% of GCP cases were associated with EGC. Univariate analysis indicated that elderly males were more susceptible to GCP associated with EGC. Conversely, multivariate analysis identified lesion morphology and endoscopic features as significant risk factors. Survival analysis demonstrated no statistically significant difference in recurrence between GCP with and without EGC (P = 0.72). CONCLUSION: The findings suggested that endoscopic resection might serve as an effective and minimally invasive treatment for GCP with or without EGC.

RESUMEN

Computer vision technology has been applied in various fields such as identification, surveillance, and robot vision. However, computer vision algorithms used for human-related tasks operate on human images, which raises data security and privacy concerns. In this Letter, we propose an image-free human keypoint detection technique using a few coded illuminations and a single-pixel detector. Our proposed method can complete the keypoint detection task at an ultralow sampling rate on a measured one-dimensional sequence without image reconstruction, thus protecting privacy from the data collection stage and preventing the acquisition of detailed visual information from the source. The network is designed to optimize both the illumination patterns and the human keypoint predictor with an encoder-decoder framework. For model training and validation, we used 2000 images from Leeds Sport Dataset and COCO Dataset. By incorporating EfficientNet backbone, the inference time is reduced from 4 s to 0.10 s. In the simulation, the proposed network achieves 91.7% average precision. Our experimental results show an average precision of 88.4% at a remarkably low sampling rate of 0.015. In summary, our proposed method has the advantages of privacy protection and resource efficiency, which can be applied to many monitoring and healthcare tasks, such as clinical monitoring, construction site monitoring, and home service robots.

OBJECTIVE: Gastric cancer (GC) stands as a prevalent and deadly global malignancy. Despite its role as a preoperative neoadjuvant therapy, Apatinib's effectiveness is curtailed among GC patients exhibiting elevated YY1 expression. YY1's connection to adverse prognosis, drug resistance, and GC metastasis is established, yet the precise underlying mechanisms remain elusive. This study aims to unravel potential pathogenic pathways attributed to YY1. DESIGN: Utilizing bioinformatics analysis, we conducted differentially expressed genes, functional annotation, and pathway enrichment analyses, and further validation through cellular and animal experiments. RESULTS: Higher YY1 expression correlated with diminished postoperative progression-free survival (PFS) and disease-specific survival (DSS) rates in TCGA analysis, identifying YY1 as an independent DSS indicator in gastric cancer (GC) patients. Notably, YY1 exhibited significantly elevated expression in tumor tissues compared to adjacent normal tissues. Bioinformatics analysis revealed noteworthy differentially expressed genes (DEGs), transcriptional targets, factors, and co-expressed genes associated with YY1. LASSO Cox analysis unveiled Transferrin as a prospective pivotal protein regulated by YY1, with heightened expression linked to adverse DSS and PFS outcomes. YY1's role in governing the p53 signaling pathway and ferroptosis in GC cells was further elucidated. Moreover, YY1 overexpression dampened immune cell infiltration within GC tumors. Additionally, YY1 overexpression hindered GC cell ferroptosis and mediated Apatinib resistance via the p53 pathway. Remarkably, IFN-a demonstrated efficacy in reversing Apatinib resistance and immune suppression in GC tissues. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings underscore the pivotal role of YY1 in driving GC progression and influencing prognosis, thus pinpointing it as a promising therapeutic target to enhance patient outcomes.

Objective: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an acute respiratory infectious disease caused by the SARA-CoV-2, characterized by high infectivity and incidence. Clinical data indicates that COVID-19 significantly damages patients' perception, motor function, and cognitive function. However, the electrophysiological mechanism by which the disease affects the patient's nervous system is not yet clear. Our aim is to investigate the abnormal levels of brain activity and changes in brain functional connectivity network in patients with COVID-19. Methods: We compared and analyzed electroencephalography signal sample entropy, energy spectrum, and brain network characteristic parameters in the delta (1-4 Hz), theta (4-8 Hz), alpha (8-13 Hz), and beta (13-30 Hz) bands of 15 patients with COVID-19 and 15 healthy controls at rest. Results: At rest, energy values of the four frequency bands in the frontal and temporal lobes of COVID-19 patients were significantly reduced. At the same time, the sample entropy value of the delta band in COVID-19 patients was significantly increased, while the value of the beta band was significantly decreased. However, the average value of the directed transfer function of patients did not show any abnormalities under the four frequency bands. Furthermore, node degree in the temporal lobe of patients was significantly increased, while the input degree of the frontal and temporal lobes was significantly decreased, and the output degree of the frontal and occipital lobes was significantly increased. Conclusion: The level of brain activity in COVID-19 patients at rest is reduced, and the brain functional network undergoes a rearrangement. These results preliminarily demonstrate that COVID-19 patients exhibit certain brain abnormalities during rest, it is feasible to explore the neurophysiological mechanism of COVID-19's impact on the nervous system by using EEG signals, which can provide a certain technical basis for the subsequent diagnosis and evaluation of COVID-19 using artificial intelligence and the prevention of brain nervous system diseases after COVID-19 infection.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Endoscopic resection (ER) has been used to remove submucosal tumors (SMTs) in recent years; however, duodenal ER is associated with high rates of immediate or delayed bleeding and perforation. Whether ER can be recommended for the treatment of duodenal SMTs remains controversial. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the clinical outcomes associated with the ER of duodenal SMTs and to assess possible predictive factors for complications and incomplete resection. METHODS: This retrospective study included 141 patients with duodenal SMTs. The therapeutic outcomes from ER and procedure-related complications were analyzed. RESULTS: Of the 141 patients, 78.7% achieved complete resection and nine (6.4%) developed complications. The multivariate analysis suggested that location near the duodenal papilla (P = 0.010) and diameter exceeding 15 mm (P = 0.091) of duodenal SMTs were independent risk factors for complications in ER. Besides, submucosal fibrosis (P = 0.042), location near the duodenal papilla (P = 0.049), and irregular morphology (P = 0.067) were independent risk factors for incomplete resection. CONCLUSIONS: ER can be recommended as an effective and minimally invasive treatment for duodenal SMTs.

INTRODUCTION: Many studies have revealed the effect of medical history on dementia. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between the history of disease and onset of dementia. METHODS: This was a multi-center, cross-sectional study, with 2595 older adults enrolled. The onset of dementia was evaluated with Revised Hasegawa Dementia Scale (HDS-R). The diagnosed diseases after the age of 40 of the participants were investigated, including respiratory system diseases, digestive system diseases, cardiovascular diseases, endocrine disorders, genitourinary system diseases, nervous system disease, sensory system diseases, dental/oral diseases, bone/joint diseases and mental illnesses. RESULTS: Data of 2458 older adults were analyzed. Univariate analysis showed that diabetes, thyroid disease, mental illness, hearing loss, stroke, dental/oral disease, Denture use, fracture/osteoporosis, kidney disease and number of diseases were risk factors for dementia. After controlling for demographic sociological variables, diabetes, dental/oral disease, and denture use were independent risk factors for dementia. Thyroid disease (P = 0.313), mental illnesses (P = 0.067), hearing loss (P = 0.595), stroke (P = 0.538), fractures/osteoporosis (P = 0.069), kidney disease (P = 0.168) were no longer significant to dementia. CONCLUSION: Diabetes, dental/oral disease and denture use were main risk factors for dementia.
