RESUMEN

Orange peel oil (OPO) is one of the most common flavorings used in the food industry, but it is volatile under environmental conditions (the presence of light, oxygen, humidity, and high temperatures). Encapsulation by biopolymer nanocomposites is a suitable and novel strategy to improve the bioavailability and stability of OPO and its controlled release. In this study, we investigated the release profile of OPO from freeze-dried optimized nanocomposite powders as a function of pH (3, 7, 11) and temperature (30, 60, and 90 °C), and within a simulated salivary system. Finally, its release kinetics modelling was performed using experimental models. The encapsulation efficiency of OPO within the powders, along with the morphology and size of the particles, were also evaluated by an atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis. The results showed that the encapsulation efficiency was in the range of 70-88%, and the nanoscale size of the particles was confirmed by AFM. The release profile showed that the lowest and the highest release rates were observed at the temperatures of 30 and 90 °C and in the pH values of 3 and 11, respectively, for all three samples. The Higuchi model provided the best model fitting of the experimental data for the OPO release of all the samples. In general, the OPO encapsulates prepared in this study showed promising characteristics for food flavoring applications. These results suggest that the encapsulation of OPO may be useful for controlling its flavor release under different conditions and during cooking.

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer (BC) is the most common cancer in women worldwide. Despite screening and information efforts, about 10% of patients present with tumor size T3 or T4 at primary diagnosis. Late presentation is associated with more advanced tumor stage and consecutively with worse survival rates. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate whether patients with a late presentation at primary BC diagnosis differ in their personality from those with early diagnosis. METHODS: In this bicentric, observational study, personality traits, positive and negative affectivity, anxiety, spirituality, illness beliefs, and sociodemographic characteristics were assessed in BC patients who presented with T-stages 3 or 4 (late presenters) and T-stages 1 or 2 (controls) at initial diagnosis. RESULTS: Forty patients (20 controls, 20 late presenters) were interviewed. "Late presenters" perceived their disease as long lasting and had significantly more "positive affectivity" in the current trait. Although no significant associations were found, there was a trend for late presenters to have higher education levels, less spiritual longing, less accurate explanation of their illness, less anxiety in the trait scale, and more conscientiousness than the controls. CONCLUSION: As patients with late presentation for BC differ in specific psychological and sociodemographic characteristics from patients with early BC, the findings of this pilot project warrant additional investigations to identify further specific characteristics and motivations. Identifying patients at risk for late presentation and encouraging them to accept an earlier diagnosis could help to improve their therapy and, finally, their outcome.

In this study by considering the advantages of bredigite (Br) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) bioceramics, composite scaffolds of bredigite/titanium dioxide were prepared by the gelcasting method, then, to improve the mechanical, biological and antibacterial properties, scaffolds were coated with chitosan (Ch) polymer phase. The phase structure, fundamental groups, chemical composition, and elemental distribution analysis, morphology and the form of porosity were respectively characterized by XRD, FTIR, EDS, and SEM. Mechanical properties and porosity percentage of scaffolds were also measured by the compressive strength test and Archimedean method, respectively. In order to verify the cell compatibility, MG63 bone marrow cells were cultured on the surface of the specimens. The results showed that the addition of titanium dioxide to the scaffold of bredigite resulted in decrease of porosity and increase of compressive strength of scaffolds from 0.299 to 0.687 MPa. Furthermore, the coated scaffold with chitosan polymer reduced porosity from 83 to 63 percent and a remarkable improvement in compressive strength from 0.585 to 2.339 MPa. The results of the antibacterial test showed that in composite scaffolds, The diameter of the inhibition zone is 22 and 29 mm, in the culture media of Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive), respectively. On the other hand, the results of cell compatibility and cell adhesion tests showed that the scaffolds had no toxicity and the growth, proliferation, and adhesion of MG63 bone cells adjacent to the scaffolds was desirable. Therefore, the scaffold in this study can be used as an ideal scaffold for use in bone tissue engineering.

Orange peel oil is one of the most common flavorings used in the food industry which is volatile under environmental conditions. Encapsulation is the best way to protect it and control its release. One of the nanoencapsulation systems for food bioactive ingredients is complexation method, which entraps the core materials in a complex of two different biopolymers. In this study, orange peel oil was nanoencapsulated by pectin-whey protein nanocomplexes. After determining the optimum nanocomplex suspensions containing orange peel oil based on the stability, viscosity, and color, they were formulated in three different pH values (3, 6 and 9) and converted into powdered forms by freeze drying. The analysis of size and zeta potential of nanocomplexes revealed that the smallest particles formed in pH=6. The encapsulation efficiency of the powders at pH=3, 6 and 9 were 88, 84, and 70%, respectively and there was a reverse linear correlation between encapsulation efficiency and the color index (b*). The microstructure and the morphology of the nanocomplex powders was investigated by SEM and AFM and the results showed that more spherical particles are formed in pH=3. FTIR analysis determined that there was a chemical reaction and bond formation between whey proteins and pectin as a sharp band was appeared in 991cm-1.

BACKGROUND: About 10 million children worldwide live or work on the street. International reports estimate the prevalence of substance use among street children to be between 25% - 90%, which is who were referredntal disorders and high-risk behaviors. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to report the outcomes of assisted withdrawal of opioid-dependent vulnerable children and adolescents who were referred to child and adolescent psychiatric ward of Ali Ebne Abitaleb hospital, an academic hospital in Zahedan city. METHODS: Clinical chart abstractions were performed on a convenience sample of 40 serial opioid-dependent street children and adolescents (mean age: 11.14 ± 3.6 years) who were referred to child and adolescent psychiatric ward of Ali Ebne Abitaleb treatment and research center from November 2014 to May 2015. The demographic data, drug use history, comorbid physical and psychiatric conditions, symptomatology of opioid withdrawal syndrome, pharmacotherapies and psychosocial services, length of hospital stay, and any adverse events were extracted from the patients' files using a checklist developed by the authors. RESULTS: Twenty-four (60%) patients were male, and 16 (40%) were female. The main drug used by all patients was opioids. Heroin Kerack (which has a street name of crystal in southeast Iran) was the most common (75%) drug of use, followed by opium (10%) and opium residue (7.5%). None of the participants self-reported using injected drugs. The high rate of a lack of eligibility for guardianship was documented among parents (87.5%) mainly due to their use of illegal drugs. Musculoskeletal pain and diarrhea were the most common withdrawal symptoms of the patients upon admission. The mean length of stay was 10.8 (± 7.30) days, and no significant adverse events were reported during the symptomatic treatment of opioid withdrawal syndrome. CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, this is the first study to report on the safety and feasibility of inpatient symptomatic pharmacological treatment for assisted withdrawal among opioid-dependent children and adolescents in Iran. More well-designed studies to investigate the long-term outcomes of opioid treatment among children are warranted.
