Background: Health information-seeking behavior refers to individuals' targeted actions to satisfy their health information needs and search for relevant disease-related information. Nowadays, social media platforms provide a great opportunity for meeting health information needs and delivering preventive education regarding human papillomavirus (HPV). The purpose of this study is the information-seeking behavior of Iranian young adults (18-28 years old) regarding HPV on social media, a preventive approach to HPV. Methods: The present descriptive-analytical study was conducted in 2023 among Iranian boys and girls aged 18-28 years. A multistage cluster sampling method was used to select 3840 participants. The data collection tool was Longo's Health Information-Seeking Behavior Questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS software. Results: The results showed that Iranian youth aged 18-28 were more inclined to seek information on social media about the transmission routes and preventive measures for HPV. The primary informational need regarding transmission was "I want to know the main route of HPV transmission is through vaginal and anal intercourse?", and regarding prevention, it was "Can condoms prevent HPV infection?" Additionally, the findings indicated that young individuals sought information about HPV after their first sexual encounter. Most of the information needs of the youth were fulfilled through YouTube, Instagram, and WhatsApp, mainly in video format. Approximately 85.10% of the youth were satisfied with the information obtained from social media. The results revealed a significant and positive relationship between the health information needs of young adults (18-28 years old) in the area of HPV and personal factors. Gender, age, marital status, education level, history of HPV infection, and engaging is unprotected extramarital sex were identified as significant influential factors on the level of information needs of young individuals, especially regarding HPV preventive measures (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Health authorities and disease control and prevention centers need to harness the potential of social media in meeting the informational needs of youth and providing education and awareness, especially concerning the transmission and prevention of HPV.

Diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) is associated with reduced fertility and poor reproductive outcomes. The association between dietary patterns and DOR was not well studied. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between adhering to the healthy eating index (HEI-2015) and the risk of DOR. In this case-control study, 370 Iranian women (120 with DOR and 250 age- and BMI-matched controls) were examined. A reliable semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire was used to collect diet-related data. We analyzed the HEI-2015 and their dietary intake data to determine major dietary patterns. The multivariable logistic regression was used in order to analyze the association between HEI-2015 and risk of DOR. We found no significant association between HEI-2015 score and risk of DOR in the unadjusted model (OR 0.78; 95%CI 0.59, 1.03). After controlling for physical activity and energy intake, we observed that women in the highest quartile of the HEI-2015 score had 31% decreased odds of DOR (OR 0.69; 95%CI 0.46, 0.93). This association remained significant even after adjusting for all potential confounders. Overall, increased adherence to HEI may lead to a significant reduction in the odds ratio of DOR. Clinical trials and prospective studies are needed to confirm this association.

BACKGROUND: The epidemiologic evidence on the association between acid load potential of diet and the risk of diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) is scarce. We aim to explore the possible relationship between dietary acid load (DAL), markers of ovarian reserve and DOR risk in a case-control study. METHODS: 370 women (120 women with DOR and 250 women with normal ovarian reserve as controls), matched by age and BMI, were recruited. Dietary intake was obtained using a validated 80-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). The DAL scores including the potential renal acid load (PRAL) and net endogenous acid production (NEAP) were calculated based on nutrients intake. NEAP and PRAL scores were categorized by quartiles based on the distribution of controls. Antral follicle count (AFC), serum antimullerian hormone (AMH) and anthropometric indices were measured. Logistic regression models were used to estimate multivariable odds ratio (OR) of DOR across quartiles of NEAP and PRAL scores. RESULTS: Following increase in PRAL and NEAP scores, serum AMH significantly decreased in women with DOR. Also, AFC count had a significant decrease following increase in PRAL score (P = 0.045). After adjustment for multiple confounding variables, participants in the top quartile of PRAL had increased OR for DOR (OR: 1.26; 95%CI: 1.08-1.42, P = 0.254). CONCLUSION: Diets with high acid-forming potential may negatively affect ovarian reserve in women with DOR. Also, high DAL may increase the risk of DOR. The association between DAL and markers of ovarian reserve should be explored in prospective studies and clinical trials.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is associated with reproductive disorders and adverse cardiometabolic risk factors that can negatively impact the general health of women. Inulin-type fructans (ITFs) are proposed to beneficially affect risk factors associated with metabolic disorders. Whether ITFs can help with the management of PCOS by modifying insulin resistance (IR) and androgen levels has not yet been explored. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of ITFs with different degrees of polymerization on insulin resistance, blood lipids, anthropometric measures, and hormonal status in overweight and obese women with PCOS. In a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial, seventy-five women with PCOS aged 18-40 years old were randomly assigned to receive 10 g/day of high-performance inulin (HPI) or oligofructose-enriched inulin (OEI) or maltodextrin for 12 weeks. Biochemical and clinical outcomes were measured at baseline and after the intervention. Participants in the HPI and OEI groups experienced improvements in waist circumference, total testosterone, free androgen index, sex hormone-binding globulin, and triglycerides compared to the placebo group. Also, the number of women with irregular menses or oligomenorrhoea decreased significantly in both ITF groups. Participants in the HPI group reported lower body mass, fasting insulin, and HOMA-IR, as well as a higher quantitative insulin sensitivity check index. ITF supplementation, especially with long-chain ITFs, when given for 12 weeks may improve metabolic outcomes, androgen status and clinical manifestations in women with PCOS.

Introduction: Although limited evidence exists on the beneficial reproductive effects of diet quality indices, the association is still largely unknown. We aimed to investigate the association between Diet Quality Index-International (DQI-I) and antral follicle count (AFC) and serum antimullerian hormone (AMH) as precise and sensitive markers of ovarian reserve and to assess the risk of diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) in women seeking fertility treatments. Methods: In a case-control study, 370 women (120 women with DOR and 250 women with normal ovarian reserve as controls), matched by age and body mass index (BMI), were recruited. Dietary intake was obtained using a validated 80-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). The quality of diets was assessed using DQI-I, which included four major dietary components: variety (0-20 points), adequacy (0-40 points), moderation (0-30 points), and overall balance (0-10 points). DQI-I score was categorized by quartiles based on the distribution of controls. AFC, serum AMH and anthropometric indices were measured. Logistic regression models were used to estimate multivariable odds ratio (OR) of DOR across quartiles of DQI-I score. Results: Increased adherence to DQI-I was associated with higher AFC in women with DOR. After adjusting for potential confounders, the odds of DOR decreased with increasing DQI-I score (0.39; 95% CI: 0.18-0.86). Conclusion: Greater adherence to DQI-I, as a food and nutrient-based quality index, may decrease the risk of DOR and improve the ovarian reserve in women already diagnosed with DOR. Our findings, though, need to be verified through prospective studies and clinical trials.

One of the most prevalent ovulation disorders is polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). According to the anti-inflammatory and beneficial effects of propolis, this triple-blind controlled trial was designed to evaluate the effect of propolis on metabolic factors, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, and testosterone in women with PCOS. Recruited patients from the gynecologist clinic were randomized based on a stratified permuted four-block randomization procedure to supplement with propolis tablets, two tablets/day (500 mg propolis/day) (n = 30) or identical placebo tablets (n = 30) for 12 weeks in 2021 until 2022. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire, blood samples, and a checklist to record the measured parameters. A total of 57 patients completed the trial. ANCOVA test showed that hip circumference (HC)) p = 0.03), fasting insulin (p = 0.007), homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (p = 0.004), testosterone (p = 0.004), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL)/high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (p = 0.02) were significantly decreased in the propolis versus the placebo group after adjustment for confounders. Although fasting blood glucose (p = 0.04) decreased significantly in the propolis group compared to the placebo, after adjusting for confounders, significance was lost (p = 0.09). Supplementation with propolis elicited positive effects on fasting insulin and insulin resistance, in addition to reducing the testosterone level, LDL/HDL, and HC, in PCOS women.

BACKGROUND: Limited data is available on the full spectrum of maternal COVID-19 infection in terms of pregnancy outcomes. The present study aimed to compare the maternal and neonatal outcomes of COVID-19 in infected and non-infected pregnant women. METHODS: A dual-site retrospective cohort study was conducted in two tertiary hospitals in Isfahan, Iran. The sample included 104 infected and 210 non-infected hospitalized pregnant women. Odds ratios (OR) were estimated using multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS: There were significant differences between COVID-19-infected and non-infected pregnant women regarding preterm labor (PTL) (odds ratio [OR]: 11.34, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.19-48.54, P=0.035); hospitalization days (OR: 7.21, 95% CI: 4.05-12.85, P≤0.001); cesarean section (CS) (OR: 4.76, 95% CI: 1.78-12.45, P=0.002); neonatal admission to neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) (OR: 1.28, 95% CI: 1.12-1.67, P=0.004); and neonatal respiratory distress (OR: 2.37, 95% CI: 1.02- 5.47, P=0.044). No significant association was found between COVID-19 infection and abortion (OR: 0.06, 95% CI: 0.01-1.45, P=0.084); stillbirth (OR: 1.84, 95% CI: 0.05-39.68, P=0.743); Apgar score (1 minute) (OR: 0.91, 95% CI: 0.74-1.13, P=0.382); Apgar score (5 minutes) (OR: 0.97, 95% CI: 0.81-1.18, P=0.765); and low birth weight (LBW) (OR: 4.76, 95% CI: 1.78-12.45, P=0.002). CONCLUSION: PTL, CS, neonatal admission in NICU, neonatal respiratory distress, and hospitalization days were significantly higher in pregnant women with COVID-19 compared to those without infection.

Background: The quality of the luteal phase is the most important issue affecting pregnancy outcomes in assisted reproductive technology (ART). Luteal-phase support with the administration of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist or progesterone improves the likelihood of pregnancy in ART. Due to disagreements regarding the best pharmaceutical form of progesterone for success of in vitro fertilization (IVF) in ART methods, the present study aimed to compare the clinical efficacy of oral dydrogesterone with vaginal progesterone on the outcome of pregnancy in IVF. Materials and Methods: This unblinded randomized clinical trial was conducted at the Shahid Beheshti Hospital, Obstetrics and Gynecology Centre in Isfahan, Iran, between june 2021 and September 2021. In total, 126 couples were included in the study. All patients underwent controlled ovarian stimulation and IVF. Patients were randomly divided into two groups (n = 63 per group). After embryo transfer, group I was treated with Cyclogest 400 mg twice daily, and group II was treated with oral Duphaston 10 mg twice daily. Results: No significant differences were observed between the two groups in terms of the mean endometrial thickness (P = 0.613), the mean number of transferred embryos (P = 0.100), and the number of implanted embryos (P = 0.338). Additionally, no statistically significant differences in the pregnancy rate were detected between the two groups (P = 0.875). Conclusions: The evidence from this study indicates that Duphaston is as effective as Cyclogest for luteal-phase support.

To present a comprehensive synthesis of the effect of soluble fiber supplementation on blood lipid parameters in adults, a systematic search was undertaken in PubMed, Scopus, and ISI Web of Science of relevant articles published before November 2021. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the effects of soluble fibers on blood lipids in adults were included. We estimated the change in blood lipids for each 5 g/d increment in soluble fiber supplementation in each trial and then calculated the mean difference (MD) and 95% CI using a random-effects model. We estimated dose-dependent effects using a dose-response meta-analysis of differences in means. The risk of bias and certainty of the evidence was evaluated using the Cochrane risk of bias tool and the Grading Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation methodology, respectively. A total of 181 RCTs with 220 treatment arms (14,505 participants: 7348 cases and 7157 controls) were included. There was a significant reduction in LDL cholesterol (MD: -8.28 mg/dL, 95% CI: -11.38, -5.18), total cholesterol (TC) (MD: -10.82 mg/dL, 95% CI: -12.98, -8.67), TGs (MD: -5.55 mg/dL, 95% CI: -10.31, -0.79), and apolipoprotein B (Apo-B) (MD: -44.99 mg/L, 95% CI: -62.87, -27.12) after soluble fiber supplementation in the overall analysis. Each 5 g/d increase in soluble fiber supplementation had a significant reduction in TC (MD: -6.11 mg/dL, 95% CI: -7.61, -4.61) and LDL cholesterol (MD: -5.57 mg/dl, 95% CI: -7.44, -3.69). In a large meta-analysis of RCTs, results suggest that soluble fiber supplementation could contribute to the management of dyslipidemia and the reduction of cardiovascular disease risk.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common gynecological endocrine disorder. Pomegranate juice (PJ) has been known to play anti-inflammatory and antioxidant roles. However, the effects of PJ on inflammation, oxidative stress, and sex hormones in PCOS patients are very little studied, and thus more studies are needed. This randomized controlled trial enrolled 44 women diagnosed with PCOS according to the Rotterdam criteria, body mass index (BMI) ≥ 25 kg/m2 , and aged 18-40 years old. Participants were randomly assigned to take 45 ml/day of concentrated PJ or a control group without intervention. Some biomarkers of sex hormones, inflammation, and oxidative stress were quantified at baseline and after the 8-week intervention. Compared with the controls, serum testosterone levels were significantly decreased in overweight and obese women with PCOS who supplemented with concentrated PJ (-0.004 ± 0.013 vs. 0.039 ± 0.013, p = .039). However, we did not observe significant differences in luteinizing hormone (LH) and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) levels and inflammation and oxidative stress factors between the two groups after adjustment for confounding variables. An 8-week supplementation with concentrated PJ could effectively improve testosterone levels in overweight and obese women with PCOS. This study was registered at www.irct.ir (IRCT20191109045383N1).

Background and Aims: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the common endocrine disorders in women, which causes numerous symptoms in women. The relationship of many micronutrients with this syndrome has been investigated. This study was conducted to examine the effects of magnesium supplementation on hyperandrogenism, hirsutism, and sleep quality in women with PCOS. Methods: In this parallel randomized clinical trial, 64 women with PCOS were randomly assigned to the magnesium group (n = 32) or placebo group (n = 32) for 10 weeks. Patients in the magnesium group received one 250 mg magnesium oxide tablet, per day. Hyperandrogenism, hirsutism, and sleep quality were measured at the beginning and end of the study. This randomized clinical trial was registered at https://www.IRCT.ir (IRCT20130903014551N8). Results: Magnesium supplementation had no significant effect on hyperandrogenism (p = 0.51 for dehydroepiandrosterone sulfates, p = 0.27 for testosterone), hirsutism (p = 0.23), and sleep quality (p = 0.85) compared with placebo. Conclusions: The present study showed that a single dose of magnesium supplementation elicited no beneficial effects on the mentioned symptoms in polycystic women. It is possible that the positive effects of magnesium observed in the former studies were due to the synergistic effects of other vitamins or minerals. More studies are needed in this area.

Background: We set out to explore the effect of intrauterine human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) instillation by intrauterine insemination (IUI) catheter before embryo transfer (ET) on assisted reproductive technologies (ART) outcomes of infertile women. Methods: One hundred women with infertility who were scheduled for in vitro fertilization (IVF)/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) cycles were included in the study. They were randomly devoted to two groups: experimental (n= 50) and control (n= 50). In the experimental group, 500 IU hCG passed into the internal cervical orifice via IUI catheter within 15 minutes before the transfer of fresh or vitrified cleavage-stage embryos. The control group underwent the same ET procedure without prior injection of hCG. Results: None of the outcomes showed a statistically significant difference between the two groups. In the intervention and control groups, respectively, biochemical pregnancies rates were 26% and 18%, implantation rates were 13.5% and 8.6%, clinical pregnancies rates were 22% and 14%, ongoing pregnancies rates were 18% and 14%, and live birth rates were 14% and 12%. Conclusion: Intrauterine injection of hCG via IUI catheter is not recommended in a clinical routine setting at this stage. Future efforts are warranted to further refine the applicability of this modality.

Introduction: A variety of therapeutic modalities are available in management of ovarian endometrioma. This study aimed to compare the effects of ethanol sclerotherapy and laparoscopic surgery on disease recurrence and ovarian factors of these patients. Methods: 70 women with ovarian endometrioma and chronic pelvic pain were randomly divided into two groups. The first group underwent sclerotherapy with a puncture needle (cook) and the second group underwent laparoscopic surgery. Both groups were followed up every three months to investigate the recurrence rate. In this regard, ultrasonography was performed 3 months and 12 months after treatment, and serum anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels were also reassessed 12 weeks after the intervention. Results: 70 women with the mean age of 31.46 ± 4.71 years, and the mean body mass index (BMI) of 23.12 ± 1.01 were studied. The two groups were similar regarding age (p = 0.770), BMI (p = 0.371), history of gastrointestinal signs (p = 0.794), history of urinary diseases (p = 0.324), dysmenorrhea (p = 0.403), pelvic pain (p = 0.454), dyspareunia (p = 0.448), location of cyst (p = 0.448), and diameter of cyst (p = 0.250). In the laparoscopic group, a significant decrease in anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels was observed after 12 weeks (p < 0.0001), while in the sclerotherapy group, no significant changes were found between pre-and post-operative AMH levels (p = 0.120). Cyst size decreased significantly in both groups three months (p < 0.001) and twelve months (p < 0.0001) after treatment. In the third month, 8 patients in the sclerotherapy group and 13 patients in the laparoscopic group had recurrences, and in the twelfth month, 17 patients in the sclerotherapy group and 15 patients in the laparoscopic group had recurrence of symptoms (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Although AMH level and mean cyst diameter were significantly lower one year after laparoscopy, recurrence rate of ovarian endometrioma was similar between ethanol sclerotherapy and laparoscopy methods.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB), alopecia, low quality of life, and acne are considered as complications of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). We hypothesized that magnesium supplementation would yield beneficial effects on PCOS related complications. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects of magnesium supplementation on AUB, alopecia, quality of life, and acne. METHODS: In this parallel randomized clinical trial, we randomly assigned 64 women with PCOS to the magnesium group (n = 32) or placebo group (n = 32) for 10 weeks. AUB, alopecia, quality of life, and acne were assessed by the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics criterion, the Sinclair Scale, the Health Survey Quality of Life Questionnaire, and the Global Acne Grading System, respectively. This randomized clinical trial was registered at IRCT.ir (IRCT20130903014551N9). RESULTS: Magnesium supplementation significantly improved the components of quality of life including physical functioning (p = 0.011), role limitations due to physical health (p = 0.012), role limitations due to emotional problems (p < 0.001), energy/fatigue (p = 0.005), emotional wellbeing (p < 0.001), social functioning (p = 0.002), general health (p = 0.013), and total quality of life (p < 0.001), compared with placebo. No significant effect was observed on acne, alopecia, and AUB. CONCLUSION: Magnesium supplementation in women with PCOS had a significant positive effect on improving total quality of life. BACKGROUND: Literature suggests a relationship between estrogen levels and migraine headache pathogenesis. However, the effect of soy isoflavones on migraine characteristic remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effect of soy isoflavones on migraine characteristics and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) levels in women with migraine. METHODS: Eighty-three participants completed a randomized double-blind controlled trial, receiving 50 mg per day soy isoflavones or placebo supplementation for 8 weeks. Migraine severity, migraine days per month, frequency and duration of attacks, mental status, quality of life and serum CGRP levels were measured at baseline and the end of the intervention. Bivariate comparison and intention-to-treat (ITT) were used for analysis. RESULTS: Soy isoflavones intake resulted in a significant decrease in mean frequency (-2.36 vs -0.43, P < 0.001), duration (-2.50 vs -0.02, P < 0.001) of migraine attacks and CGRP level (-12.18 ng/l vs -8.62, P = 0.002) in compared to placebo group. Also, a significant improvement was found in quality of life (16.76 vs 2.52, P < 0.001). Although, reduction in the migraine severity and mental status did not reach a statistically significant level (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: soy isoflavones supplementation may be considered as a complementary treatment for women with migraine to improve migraine characteristics and reduce the burden of disease.

OBJECTIVE: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is associated with several cardiovascular risk factors. Prebiotics were proposed to beneficially affect risk factors associated with metabolic disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the effects of inulin-type fructans (ITFs), as well-studied prebiotics, with different degrees of polymerization, on markers of inflammation, oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction in PCOS patients. DESIGN: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. PATIENTS: Seventy-five PCOS women were randomly assigned to receive 10 g/day of either high-performance inulin (HPI) or oligofructose-enriched inulin (OEI) or placebo for 12 weeks. MEASUREMENTS: Biochemical indices and blood pressure levelswere assessed before and after the intervention. RESULTS: In the intent-to-treat analysis, high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) decreased in HPI and OEI groups, over the 12 weeks, and the changes were significant in the HPI group, compared to placebo (changes from baseline in the HPI group: -0.11 vs. placebo group: 0.004 mg/L [conversion factor to SI units (nmol/L): 9/5238]; p = .007). Serum levels of nitric oxide (NO) increased, and endothelin-1 and total oxidant status decreased in HPI and OEI groups, at the end of the trial; however, these changes were not significantly compared to placebo (p = .07, .36 and .22, respectively). No differences in systolic and diastolic blood pressure were found. Per-protocol analysis (n = 68) yielded consistent results for all endpoints, with the exception that the significant effect of ITFs on serum hs-CRP levels in the unadjusted ITT analysis became nonsignificant in the per-protocol analysis (p = .06). CONCLUSION: A 12-week supplementation with long-chain ITFs had favourable effects on inflammatory status among PCOS patients.

Background: This study aims to evaluate the effect of Letrozole (LE) in reducing ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) in high-risk participants with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) treated with In vitro fertilization (IVF). Methods: This study was a randomized clinical trial in which participants were randomly divided into two groups (n= 25 per group). Based on GnRH-antagonist protocol, recombinant follicle-stimulating hormone 150 units/day subcutaneously and human menopausal gonadotropin 75 units/ day intramuscularly used from day 2 of the menstrual cycle. In the study group, Letrozole 5 mg daily was added simultaneously with gonadotropin during the first five days of the IVF cycle and in the control group placebo was added. Results: There were statistically significant differences among the groups in terms of Estradiol level on Trigger Day (p= 0.04). The total days of stimulation and cumulative Gonadotropin dose were significantly lower in the Letrozole group (p= 0.00). There were no significant differences between the groups in terms of the number of oocytes retrieved, numbers of implanted embryos, and clinical pregnancy rates (p-value> 0.05). There was only one moderate case in the intervention group and 9 moderate symptoms in the control group (p= 0.04). Discussion: Administration of Letrozole with GnRH antagonist protocol, conventional protocol in PCOS cases in IVF cycle, had a significant effect on reducing the incidence of OHSS. So, if the future studies prove LE co-administration may lessen the incidence of OHSS, LE will be a highly potent drug for preventing OHSS in PCOS cases.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is associated with insulin resistance and dyslipidemia. Pomegranate juice is a rich source of polyphenols that may improve blood pressure, lipid profile, and other risk factors of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). No study has examined the effects of pomegranate juice consumption on the clinical outcomes of PCOS. This study aimed to examine the effects of concentrated pomegranate juice (CPJ) consumption on risk factors of CVDs in women with PCOS. In this randomized clinical trial, 44 PCOS women with an age range of 18-40 years and body mass index (BMI) of ≥25 kg/m2 were recruited. They were randomly allocated to the CPJ (n = 22) and control (n = 22) groups, and followed for 8 weeks. Anthropometric measures, blood pressure, and biochemical parameters were measured at baseline and at the end of the trial. Compared with the control group, CPJ consumption significantly reduced systolic (-9.77 ± 1.46 vs. -1.18 ± 1.46 mmHg, p < .001) and diastolic (-3.87 ± 1.36 vs. 0.30 ± 1.36 mmHg, p = .05) blood pressure, serum triglyceride (TG) levels (-7.82 ± 6.32 vs. 16.63 ± 6.32 mg/dl, p = .01), TG/high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio (-0.39 ± 0.24 vs. 0.66 ± 0.24, p = .007), and increased serum concentrations of low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) (6.03 ± 2.47 vs. -1.98 ± 2.47 mg/dl, p = .04) and HDL-C (1.93 ± 1.10 vs. -1.78 ± 1.10 mg/dl, p = .03). These findings were obtained after taking baseline measurements and potential confounders into account. No adverse event or complication was reported due to CPJ consumption throughout the study. We found that CPJ consumption has a beneficial effect on blood pressure, serum concentrations of TG and HDL-C, and TG/HDL-C ratio in women with PCOS. However, this juice could increase serum LDL-C levels in these patients. This trial was registered at www.irct.ir as IRCT20191109045383N1.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the current study was to assess the effects of curcumin supplementation on glycemic status, lipid profile and high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) serum levels in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). DESIGN: This randomized double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted on 60 women who were randomly assigned to the intervention or control groups using block randomization. SETTING: Infertility referral center. INTERVENTIONS: Curcumin (500 mg/d) or placebo twice daily for 6 weeks. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Serum evaluation of lipid profile (triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol concentrations, LDL/HDL-C and TG/HDL-C ratios), glycemic index (fasting blood sugar (FBS), insulin concentrations, homeostasis model of assessment insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (QUICKI)) and hs-CRP levels. RESULTS: Glycemic index, lipid profile and hs-CRP serum levels were measured at first and at the end of trial. Serum insulin (p = 0.020) and Quantitative Insulin Sensitivity Check Index (QUICKI) (p = 0.003) were improved significantly, while Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) (p = 0.067) improved marginally in curcumin treated group (within group analysis). CONCLUSIONS: Curcumin supplementation might be beneficial for improving serum insulin and QUICKI, however, future investigations are suggested in order to draw a firm link between curcumin and glycemia control.

Objective: To determine the effect of Air Quality Index (AQI) in the first trimester of pregnancy on birth weight, placental weight, and the ratio of placental weight to the birth weight (pw-bw) in Isfahan. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study was done on 312 consecutive pregnant women in Beheshti Hospital in Isfahan city in 2013. Information on air pollution was received from the Environmental department of Isfahan. Average exposure to air pollution in the first trimester of pregnancy was calculated for eachpregnant woman. In order to compare quantitative and qualitative variables, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and chi-square were applied. After that, the multiple linear regression analysis was used to assess the association the Air Quality Index (AQI) on birth weight, placental weight and the ratio of pw-bw. Potential confounders including age, baby gender, smoking of husband, maternal BMI, maternal occupation, and education and mother's residential area were considered. A statistical significant association were considered for P-value less than 0.05. Results: The findings showed that there is inverse relationship between exposure to air pollution and placental weight in the first trimester of pregnancy after controlling potential confounders (ß = -2.57, p-value = 0.008). The inverse relationship between air pollution and the ratio of pw-bw was found. (ß = -0.001, p-value = 0.002). Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that air pollution is associated with newborns' health which in turn is a warning alarm for considering some actions in both sides of reducing the air pollution and teaching the pregnant women about the adverse effects of air pollution on the pregnancy outcomes.
