RESUMEN

The genus Salvia L., belonging to the Lamiaceae family, contains more than 900 species distributed in various parts of the world. It is a genus containing aromatic plants used both in the culinary field and above all in the cosmetic area to produce several perfumes. Salvia fruticosa Mill., notoriously known as Greek Salvia, is a plant used since ancient times in traditional medicine, but today cultivated and used in various parts of Europe and Africa. Polar and apolar extracts of this plant confirmed the presence of several metabolites such as abietane and labdane diterpenoids, triterpenoids, steroids, and some flavonoids, causing interesting properties such as sedative, carminative, and antiseptic, while its essential oils (EOs) are mainly characterized by compounds such as 1,8-cineole and camphor. The aim of this work concerns the chemical analysis by GC and GC-MS, and the investigation of the biological properties, of the EO of S. fruticosa plants collected in eastern Sicily. The gas-chromatographic analysis confirmed the presence of 1,8-cineole (17.38%) and camphor (12.81%), but at the same time, also moderate amounts of α-terpineol (6.74%), ß-myrcene (9.07%), camphene (8.66%), ß-pinene (6.55%), and α-pinene (6.45%). To study the protective effect of EOs from S. fruticosa (both the total mixture and the individual compounds) on possible damage induced by heavy metals, an in vitro system was used in which a model organism, the liverwort Conocephalum conicum, was subjected to the effect of a mix of heavy metals (HM) prepared using values of concentrations actually measured in one of the most polluted watercourses of the Campania region, the Regi Lagni. Finally, the antioxidant response and the photosynthetic damage were examined. The exogenous application of the EO yields a resumption of the oxidative stress induced by HM, as demonstrated by the reduction in the Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) content and by the increased activity of antioxidant enzyme catalase (CAT) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST). Furthermore, plants treated with HMs and EO showed a higher Fv/Fm (maximal quantum efficiency of PSII in the dark) with respect to HMs-only treated ones. These results clearly indicate the protective capacity of the EO of S. fruticosa against oxidative stress, which is achieved at least in part by modulating the redox state through the antioxidant pathway and on photosynthetic damage.

PURPOSE: To compare the level of parenchymal and portal venous enhancement in the portal venous phase (PVP) in cirrhotic patients undergoing gadoxetate disodium- and gadobenate dimeglumine-enhanced MRI. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 84 cirrhotic patients (mean age ± SD: 66 ± 13 years) who underwent contrast-enhanced MRI with both gadoxetate disodium and gadobenate dimeglumine between 2012 and 2018 were included. Two readers measured signal intensities of hepatic parenchyma, portal vein and psoas muscle on precontrast and PVP. Relative enhancement (RE), image contrast, and portal vein-to-liver contrast difference were calculated. Intraindividual differences were compared with the Wilcoxon signed rank-sum test and inter-reader differences with the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). RESULTS: In PVP, gadoxetate disodium provided lower RE than gadobenate dimeglumine (Reader 1: 42.4 ± 44.6 vs. 56.1 ± 58.8, p = 0.044; Reader 2: 42.4 ± 42.9 vs. 57.7 ± 60.5, p = 0.027;), lower image contrast (Reader 1: 0.27 ± 0.11 vs. 0.35 ± 0.11, respectively; p < 0.001; Reader 2: 0.29 ± 0.10 vs. 0.37 ± 0.07, respectively; p < 0.001), and lower portal vein-to-liver contrast difference (Reader 1: 0.89 ± 0.39 vs. 1.42 ± 0.90, p < 0.001; Reader 2: 0.95 ± 0.40 vs. 1.28 ± 0.37, p < 0.001). ICC was 0.94, 0.79, and 0.69 for RE, image contrast, and portal vein-to-liver contrast difference, respectively. CONCLUSION: In cirrhotic patients, gadoxetate disodium yielded lower enhancement of the hepatic parenchyma and lower contrast of the portal vein than gadobenate dimeglumine in PVP.

Bigels are biphasic systems formed by water-based hydrogels and oil-based organogels, mainly studied, in the last few years, for pharmaceutical and cosmetic application focused on the controlled delivery of both lipophilic and hydrophilic active agents. The rheological properties of bigels depend on both the amount and the rheological characteristics of single structured phases. Moreover, it can be expected that, at large fractions of one of the starting gels, systems more complex than oil-in-water or water-in-oil can be obtained, yielding bicontinuous or matrix-in-matrix arrangement. Model bigels were investigated from a microstructural (i.e. microscopy and electrical conductivity tests) and rheological point of view. The hydrogel was prepared by using a low-methoxyl pectin whereas the organogel was prepared by using olive oil and, as gelator, a mixture of glyceryl stearate and policosanol. Model bigels were obtained by increasing the amount of organogel mixed with the hydrogel, and microstructural characterisation evidenced an organogel-in-hydrogel behaviour for all investigated samples, even though at the highest organogel content a more complex structure seems to arise. A semi-empirical model, based on theoretical equations developed for suspensions of elastic spheres in elastic media, was proposed to relate bigel rheological properties to single phase properties and fractions.

The microstructure of organogels based on monoglycerides of fatty acids (MAGs) and policosanol and on different edible oils was investigated by using different techniques (calorimetry, nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared spectroscopy, rheology, polarized light microscopy) towards a better understanding and control of the oil gelation phenomena. Dynamic moduli were related via a fractal model to microstructural information such as solid content and fractal dimension. Infrared spectroscopy evidenced that network structure in MAGs gel is mainly due to hydrogen bonding, whereas in policosanol system is mainly given by van der Waals interactions. Because of the different relative contribution of molecular interactions, the investigated organogelators exhibit a distinguished macroscopic behavior. MAGs are sensitive to the utilized oil and structuration occurs quickly, even though at a temperature lower than policosanol. Policosanol organogels exhibit a behavior independent of the used oil and a slower gelation rate, as a result of the weaker van der Waals interactions. Nevertheless, at lower concentration a stronger final gel is obtained, probably due to of the large number of interactions arising among the long alkyl chains of the fatty alcohols. Obtained results evidenced that policosanol is very effective in gelation of different oils and seems promising for potential commercial uses.

In humans and canines, the morphology of granulosa cell tumors is extremely variable and causes diagnostic difficulties. In human pathology, immunohistochemistry has been widely used for the diagnosis of granulosa cell tumors, whereas, limited studies are present in canine species. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of cytokeratins, vimentin, and inhibin-alpha in canine normal ovaries, epithelial ovarian tumors, and granulosa cell tumors to establish an immunohistochemical panel for the differential diagnosis of ovarian tumors. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections from 4 normal ovaries, 8 granulosa cell tumors, and 6 epithelial ovarian tumors (2 adenomas and 4 adenocarcinomas) sections were obtained and stained with hematoxylin and eosin and immunohistochemically for cytokeratin AE1/AE3, cytokeratin 7, vimentin, and inhibin-alpha. In normal ovaries, cytokeratin 7, cytokeratin AE1/AE3, and vimentin were expressed in the surface epithelium. Granulosa cells were negative for cytokeratin 7 and displayed variable expression of vimentin, cytokeratin AE1/AE3, and inhibin-alpha toward follicular maturation. Granulosa cell tumors were negative for cytokeratin 7 and positive for inhibin-alpha. Conversely, ovarian epithelial cells tumors were positive for cytokeratin 7 and negative for inhibin-alpha. Both granulosa and epithelial cell tumors displayed variable expression of vimentin. Cytokeratin AE1/AE3 was expressed by all epithelial-derived tumors and 6 of 8 granulosa cell tumors. The results of this study suggest that useful immunohistochemical markers to distinguish epithelial ovarian tumors from granulosa cell tumors are cytokeratin 7 and inhibin-alpha.
