BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Intraoperative bile duct injury is a significant complication in laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC). Near-infrared fluorescence cholangiography (NIFC) can reduce this complication. Therefore, determining the optimal indocyanine green (ICG) dosage for effective NIFC is crucial. This study aimed to determine the optimal ICG dosage for NIFC. METHODS: This was a prospective, randomized, double-blind clinical trial at a single tertiary referral center, including 195 patients randomly assigned to three groups: lower dose (0.01 mg/BMI) ICG (n = 63), medium dose (0.02 mg/BMI) ICG (n = 68), and higher dose (0.04 mg/BMI) ICG (n = 64). Surgeon satisfaction and detection rates for seven biliary structures were compared among the three dose groups. RESULTS: Demographic parameters did not significantly differ among the groups. The medium dose (72.1%) and higher dose ICG groups (70.3%) exhibited superior visualization of the common hepatic duct compared to the lower dose group (41.3%) (p < 0.001). No differences existed between the medium and higher dose groups. Similar trends were observed for the common bile duct and cystic common bile duct junction. CONCLUSIONS: In patients undergoing fluorescent laparoscopic cholecystectomy, the 0.02 mg/BMI dose of indocyanine green demonstrated better biliary structure detection rates than the 0.01 mg/BMI dose and was non-inferior to the 0.04 mg/BMI dose.

RESUMEN

Introducing glycans represents an efficient chemical approach to improve the pharmacological properties of therapeutic biomolecules. Herein, we report an efficient synthesis of glycoconjugates through chlorooxime-thiol conjugation. The reactive glycosyl chlorooximes, derived from pyranoses or furanoses, readily couple to a wide range of thiol-containing substrates, including peptides, sugars, and thiophenols. This method features mild reaction conditions and fast kinetics. Capability for aqueous media and gram-scale synthesis demonstrates the potential of this method in the bioconjugation of saccharides with biologically active molecules.

Ubiquitin A-52 residue ribosomal protein fusion product 1 (UBA52) has a role in the occurrence and development of tumours. However, the mechanism by which UBA52 regulates hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tumorigenesis and progression remains poorly understood. By using the Cell Counting Kit (CCK-8), colony formation, wound healing and Transwell assays, we assessed the effects of UBA52 knockdown and overexpression on the proliferation and migration of HCC cells in vitro. By establishing subcutaneous and metastatic tumour models in nude mice, we evaluated the effects of UBA52 on HCC cell proliferation and migration in vivo. Through bioinformatic analysis of data from the Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis (GEPIA) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) databases, we discovered that UBA52 is associated with autophagy. In addition, we discovered that HCC tissues with high UBA52 expression had a poor prognosis in patients. Moreover, knockdown of UBA52 reduced HCC cell growth and metastasis both in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, knockdown of UBA52 induced autophagy through EMC6 in HCC cells. These findings suggest that UBA52 promoted the proliferation and migration of HCC cells through autophagy regulation via EMC6 and imply that UBA52 may be a viable novel treatment target for HCC patients.

BACKGROUND: There is an increasing number of different brands of robotic total knee arthroplasty (TKA) systems. Most robotic TKA systems share the same coronal alignment, while the definitions of sagittal alignment vary. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether these discrepancies impact the sagittal alignment of the lower extremity. METHODS: A total of 72 lower extremity computed tomography scans were included in our study, and 3-dimensional models were obtained using software. A total of 7 brands of robotic TKA systems were included in the study. The lower extremity axes were defined based on the surgical guide for each implant. We also set the intramedullary axis as a reference to evaluate the discrepancies in sagittal alignment of each brand of robotic system. RESULTS: On the femoral side, the axis definition was the same for all 7 robotic TKA systems. The robotic TKA axes showed a 2.41° (1.58°, 3.38°) deviation from the intramedullary axis. On the tibial side, the 7 robots had different axis definitions. The tibial mechanical axis of 6 of the TKA systems was more flexed than that of the intramedullary axis, which means the posterior tibial slope was decreased while the tibial mechanical axis of the remaining system was more extended. CONCLUSIONS: The sagittal alignment of the lower extremity for 7 different brands of robotic TKA systems differed from each other and all deviated from the intramedullary axis. Surgeons should be aware of this discrepancy when using different brands of robotic TKA systems to avoid unexpected sagittal alignment and corresponding adverse clinical outcomes. Background: Measuring anterior hip coverage on false-profile (FP) radiographs is important for judging anterior hip coverage. Conventionally, the anterior center-edge angle (ACEA) is measured from the anterior edge of the acetabular sourcil (sourcil ACEA); however, the anterior bone edge is also used as the anterior landmark. Purpose: To determine whether the sourcil ACEA or the bone-edge ACEA better represents the anterior coverage of the hip joint. Study Design: Descriptive laboratory study. Methods: We retrospectively observed 49 hips in 49 patients who underwent isolated periacetabular osteotomy. The sourcil ACEA was measured according to the standard procedure. Then, 3-dimensional (3D) volumetric models were made from computed tomographic data. The acetabular surface of the 3D model was labeled and projected onto a simulated FP radiograph, enabling the edge of the acetabulum to be identified. This simulated FP radiograph was used to measure the "true ACEA," as well as the sourcil ACEA and the bone-edge ACEA, and the 3 measurements were compared. Statistical analysis was performed-including testing for normal distribution, measuring interobserver agreement, evaluating differences between measurements, and validating correlation. Results: The mean sourcil ACEA was 8.6° (range, -3.9° to 31.7°) smaller than that of the true ACEA (P < .001); there was a strong correlation (r = 0.81; P < .001) between the 2. The mean bone-edge ACEA was 16.8° (range, -1.7° to 45.4°) greater than that of the true ACEA (P < .001); there was a moderate correlation (r = 0.57; P < 0.001) between the 2. Conclusion: Both the sourcil ACEA and bone-edge ACEA differed from the true ACEA. However, compared with the bone-edge ACEA, the sourcil ACEA was numerically closer to the true ACEA and had a stronger correlation with it . Clinical Relevance: While the exact edge of the true bearing surface of the articular cartilage may not be visible on the FP radiograph, the sourcil ACEA can be effectively utilized as a reliable surrogate when evaluating the anterior acetabular coverage in hip preservation surgery.

A floor egg is an egg that is not laid in the nest, which is a prevalent issue in many fowl breeder farms, lowering egg collection efficiency, hatching performance, and economic benefits. Although the pattern and influencing factors of floor laying have been extensively reported in chickens and ducks, it is not clear in geese. Herein, the Yangzhou goose breeders were selected, and the time and location preferences, genetic and environmental influences, and physiological indexes in floor laying were investigated. The results revealed distinct time and location preferences existed. More floor eggs were laid from 2:00 to 5:00 and 8:00 to 12:00 am, with a concentration observed in the feed trough. Moreover, the proportion of floor eggs was higher at the early stage than at other stages of the laying cycle, and the fast-growing line laid more floor eggs than dual-purpose and high-yielding lines (P < 0.05). In addition to genetic factors, the effect of environmental influences on floor eggs was also surveyed. More floor eggs were observed in the family housing system than in large-group and small-population housing systems, and geese who reared in north-facing houses laid more floor eggs than in south-facing houses (P < 0.05). Physiological indexes were compared between floor-laying and nest-laying geese. Significantly decreased serum progesterone and prolactin levels were detected, alongside down-regulated gene expressions of progesterone receptor in ovaries, oxytocin receptor in both pituitary and ovaries, corticotropin-releasing hormone in ovaries, and dopamine receptor D2 in hypothalamus and ovaries in floor-laying geese compared to nest-laying geese (P < 0.05). In addition, a practical and inexpensive approach of adding a single decoy egg to the nest box effectively reduced the proportion of floor eggs (P < 0.05). Taken together, these data provide scientific information for patterns, genetic and environmental influences, and physiological indexes of floor eggs, thereby contributing to effective control of floor laying in goose breeders' production.

BACKGROUND: Curcumin (Cur), a bioactive component of Chinese traditional medicine, has demonstrated inhibitory properties against cancer cell proliferation while synergistically enhancing the anticancer efficacy of erlotinib (Er). However, the individual limitations of both drugs, including poor aqueous solubility, lack of targeting ability, short half-life, etc., and their distinct pharmacokinetic profiles mitigate or eliminate their combined antitumor potential. RESULTS: In this study, we developed a molybdenum disulfide (MoS2)-based delivery system, functionalized with polyethylene glycol (PEG) and biotin, and co-loaded with Cur and Er, to achieve efficient cancer therapy. The MoS2-PEG-Biotin-Cur/Er system effectively converted near-infrared (NIR) light into heat, thereby inducing direct photothermal ablation of cancer cells and promoting controlled release of Cur and Er. Biotin-mediated tumor targeting facilitated the selective accumulation of MoS2-PEG-Biotin-Cur/Er at the tumor site, thus enhancing the synergistic antitumor effects of Cur and Er. Remarkably, MoS2-PEG-Biotin-Cur/Er achieved the combination of synergistic chemotherapy and photothermal therapy (PTT) upon NIR irradiation, effectively suppressing lung cancer cell proliferation and inhabiting tumor growth in vivo. CONCLUSIONS: The as-synthesized MoS2-PEG-Biotin-Cur/Er, featuring high targeting ability, NIR light-responsive drug release, and the integration of synergistic chemotherapy and PTT, may provide a promising strategy for the treatment of lung cancer in clinical practice.

Palladium (Pd) is a strategic metal and can help reduce environmental pollution, especially from vehicle exhausts. China is the world's largest Pd consumer, but with very limited reserves. However, Pd anthropogenic cycles remain unclear in China. This study aims to uncover the dynamic Pd flows and stocks in China for the period of 2001-2020 by conducting dynamic material flow analysis. The results show that the demand for Pd had increased by 10 folds during the study period due to stricter vehicle emissions policies. Also, China mainly imported such resource from the United States, Western Europe, and East Asia, with a share of 88.8 %. However, due to insufficient end-of-life vehicle (ELV) recycling system, the total recycled Pd was only 12.3 tons although the end-of-life Pd flow increased from 3.7 tons in 2001 to 30.8 tons in 2020. This implies a great Pd recycling potential. Therefore, it is urgent to promote Pd recycling by establishing an effective Pd recycling system. In addition, other policy recommendations, such as diversifying Pd import partners, increasing Pd emergency reserves, and economic instruments, are raised by considering the Chinese realities so that the overall Pd resource efficiency can be improved.

This study systematically investigated the causal relationship between gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and major depression (MD). Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with disorders of interest were screened via the genome-wide association study (GWAS) enrolling individuals of European descent. Summary-level data for GERD and MD were extracted from the UK Biobank. The inverse-variance-weighted (IVW) method was utilized as the primary analysis. Sensitivity analyses were performed using the MR-Egger method, the Maximum likelihood method, the MR-pleiotropy residual sum outlier (MR-PRESSO) method, and MR-robust adjusted profile score (MR-RAPS) method. MR-Egger regression, heterogeneity tests, pleiotropy tests, and leave-one-out tests were also performed to analyze sensitivity. The MR Steiger test was used to verify the directionality of the exposure to the outcome. An available website tool (https://shiny.cnsgenomics.com/mRnd/) was used to calculate the statistical power of MR analysis. Meta-analysis was applied to test MD's average genetically predicted effect on GERD. Our MR study showed a bidirectional causal association between MD and GERD. Regarding MD to GERD, there was a positive association between them; the ORs were 1.500 (95% CI = 1.320-1.704; P = 4.91E-10) and 2.058 (95% CI = 1.868-2.267; P = 2.20E-48) in the IVW method, respectively. In addition, the meta-analysis also showed a strong positive causal association between MD and GERD. When exposure and outcome were reversed, genetic predisposition to GERD was significantly associated with the overall Risk of advanced MD (ieu-a-1187, OR = 1.982, 95% CI = 1.694-2.319, P = 1.41E-17; ieu-b-102, OR = 1.612, 95% CI = 1.530-2.700, P = 1.15E-70). Our study provides 100% power to detect the causal effect of MD on GERD and vice versa. Genetically predicted MD was positively associated with higher GERD risk, and vice versa. Our study reminds clinicians to pay attention to screening for GERD when diagnosing and treating MD and vice versa. Moreover, there may be positive feedback between MD and GERD when treating and preventing one disorder may benefit the treatment and prevention of the other.

The photoperiod is the predominant environmental factor that governs seasonal reproduction in animals; however, the underlying molecular regulatory mechanism has yet to be fully elucidated. Herein, Yangzhou geese (Anser cygnoides) were selected at the spring equinox (SE), summer solstice (SS), autumn equinox (AE), and winter solstice (WS), and the regulation of seasonal reproduction via the light-driven cyclical secretion of pineal melatonin was investigated. We show that there were seasonal variations in the laying rate and GSI, while the ovarian area decreased 1.5-fold from the SS to the AE. Moreover, not only did the weight and volume of the pineal gland increase with a shortened photoperiod, but the secretory activity was also enhanced. Notably, tissue distribution further revealed seasonal oscillations in melatonin receptors (Mtnrs) in the pineal gland and the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. The immunohistochemical staining indicated higher Mtnr levels due to the shortened photoperiod. Furthermore, the upregulation of aralkylamine N-acetyltransferase (Aanat) was observed from the SS to the AE, concurrently resulting in a downregulation of the gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and gonadotropins (GtHs). This trend was also evident in the secretion of hormones. These data indicate that melatonin secretion during specific seasons is indicative of alterations in the photoperiod, thereby allowing for insight into the neuroendocrine regulation of reproduction via an intrinsic molecular depiction of external photoperiodic variations.

BACKGROUND: Sagittal alignment determines the extension and flexion of knee prostheses in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The definition of the sagittal axes may be different between the Mako TKA system (Stryker) and the conventional manual intramedullary approach. Whether there is any discrepancy between the 2 approaches has not been well studied. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 60 full-length computed tomographic (CT) scans of the lower extremities of 54 patients. The femur and tibia were modeled by using Mimics (Materialise). The Mako mechanical axes were determined according to the Mako TKA Surgical Guide. The manual intramedullary axes were determined according to the central axis of the tibial proximal and femoral distal medullary cavities. The femoral, tibial, and combined angular discrepancies were measured in the sagittal plane. RESULTS: On the femoral side, the Mako mechanical axis was more likely to be located in an extended position relative to the manual intramedullary axis (56 of 60 knees). The median angular discrepancy was 2.46° (interquartile range [IQR], 1.56° to 3.43° [range, -1.06° to 5.24°]). On the tibial side, the Mako mechanical axis was likely to be located in a flexed position relative to the manual intramedullary axis (57 of 60 knees). The median angular discrepancy was 2.40° (IQR, 1.87° to 2.84° [range, -0.79° to 4.20°]). The angular discrepancy of the femoral-tibial sagittal angle was 4.63° (IQR, 3.71° to 5.64° [range, 1.20° to 9.02°]). CONCLUSIONS: Compared with manual TKA, the Mako system is more likely to result in a decreased posterior tibial slope and extension of the femoral prosthesis. It may also influence the evaluation of lower-extremity extension and flexion. When using the Mako system, special attention should be given to these discrepancies. Anterior hip coverage is important for hip stability. As a parameter of anterior hip coverage, the anterior center-edge angle on false-profile radiograph (ACEA FP) is associated with clinical outcomes. With the widespread application of computed tomography (CT), the anterior center-edge angle on CT (ACEA CT) has also been used to measure anterior hip coverage. Little is known about the reproducibility of the ACEA FP and ACEA CT in patients with hip dysplasia or the correlation between the ACEA CT and ACEA FP. In total, 49 hips of 49 patients who underwent periacetabular osteotomy in our center were included. The lateral center-edge angle, Tönnis angle, ACEA FP and ACEA CT were determined. We assessed the intraobserver and interobserver reliability of the ACEA FP and ACEA CT, the effect of the Tönnis angle on the reliability of the ACEA FP and ACEA CT and the correlation between the ACEA CT and ACEA FP. The intraobserver and interobserver interclass correlation coefficients of the ACEA FP were good, and those of the ACEA CT were very good. The Tönnis angle was weakly correlated with inconsistent ACEA FP measurements (P = 0.008) but not with inconsistent ACEA CT measurements (P = 0.600). No correlation between ACEA FP and ACEA CT measurements was observed (P = 0.213-0.665). The reproducibility of the ACEA CT is more consistent than that of the ACEA FP. The oblique acetabular roof had an effect on determining the ACEA FP but not on determining the ACEA CT. No correlation was observed between the measured ACEA FP and ACEA CT values, so the clinical evidence obtained from the ACEA FP cannot be directly applied to the ACEA CT.

BACKGROUND: Tertiary lymphoid structures (TLSs) have been proposed to assess the prognosis of patients with cancer. Here, we investigated the prognostic value and relevant mechanisms of TLSs in colorectal cancer liver metastases (CRCLM). METHODS: 603 patients with CRCLM treated by surgical resection from three cancer centers were included. The TLSs were categorized according to their anatomic subregions and quantified, and a TLS scoring system was established for intratumor region (T score) and peritumor region (P score). Differences in relapse-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) between groups were determined. Multiplex immunohistochemical staining (mIHC) was used to determine the cellular composition of TLSs in 40 CRCLM patients. RESULTS: T score positively correlated with superior prognosis, while P score negatively associated with poor survival (all p<0.05). Meanwhile, T score was positively associated with specific mutation subtype of KRAS. Furthermore, TLSs enrichment gene expression was significantly associated with survival and transcriptomic subtypes of CRCLM. Subsequently, mIHC showed that the densities of Treg cells, M2 macrophages and Tfh cells were significantly higher in intratumor TLSs than in peritumor TLSs (p=0.029, p=0.047 and p=0.041, respectively), and the frequencies of Treg cells and M2 macrophages were positively correlated with P score, while the frequencies of Tfh cells were positively associated with T scores in intratumor TLSs (all p<0.05). Next, based on the distribution and abundance of TLSs, an Immune Score combining T score and P score was established which categorized CRCLM patients into four immune classes with different prognosis (all p<0.05). Among them, patients with higher immune class have more favorable prognoses. The C-index of Immune Class for RFS and OS was higher than Clinical Risk Score statistically. These results were also confirmed by the other two validation cohorts. CONCLUSIONS: The distribution and abundance of TLSs is significantly associated with RFS and OS of CRCLM patients, and a novel immune class was proposed for predicting the prognosis of CRCLM patients.

T-2 toxin is a dangerous natural pollutant and widely exists in animal feed, often causing toxic damage to poultry, such as slow growth and development, immunosuppression, and death. Although geese are considered the most sensitive poultry to T-2 toxin, the exact damage caused by T-2 toxin to geese is elusive. In the present study, a total of forty two 1-day-old healthy Yangzhou male goslings were randomly allotted seven diets contaminated with 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, or 2.0 mg/kg T-2 toxin for 21 d, and the effects of T-2 toxin exposure on growth performance, feather quality, tibia development, and blood parameters were investigated. The results showed that T-2 toxin exposure significantly inhibited feed intake, body weight gain, shank length growth, and organ development (e.g., ileum, cecum, liver, spleen, bursa, and tibia) in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, the more serious feathering abnormalities and feather damage were observed in goslings exposed to a high dose of T-2 toxin (0.8, 1.0, and 2.0 mg/kg), which were mainly sparsely covered with short, dry, rough, curly, and gloss-free feathers on the back. We also found that hypertrophic chondrocytes of the tibial growth plate exhibited abnormal morphology and nuclear consolidation or loss, accompanied by necrosis and excessive apoptosis under 2.0 mg/kg T-2 toxin exposure. Moreover, 2.0 mg/kg T-2 toxin exposure triggered erythropenia, thrombocytosis, alanine aminotransferase, and aspartate aminotransferase activity, as well as high blood urea nitrogen, uric acid, and lactic dehydrogenase levels. Collectively, these data indicate that T-2 toxin had an adverse effect on the growth performance, feather quality, and tibia development, and caused liver and kidney damage and abnormal blood parameters in Yangzhou goslings, providing crucial information toward the prevention and control of T-2 toxin contamination in poultry feed.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different free-range systems on the growth performance, carcass traits, and meat quality of geese. Grass pasture zones in the study area were selected, and 28 d-old male Yangzhou geese with similar body weights (1.57 ± 0.12 kg) were randomly allocated to one of three conditions: (A) free-range conditions in the apron area during 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. (10-20 m from shed with grass pasture); (B) free-range conditions in the outer range from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (beyond 50 m from shed with grass pasture); and (C) barn system. Free range-reared geese had higher weight gain after 42 days of age than barn-reared geese, regardless of the range area. A lower feed conversion ratio was found in outer range-reared and apron area-reared geese from 28 to 63 days of age. In addition, the highest percentages of leg and breast muscle weights were observed in outer range-reared and apron area-reared geese, respectively. Finally, outer-range rearing resulted in a lower pH and lower moisture content. Therefore, these data suggest that the outer range system benefits growth performance and feed conversion ratio of geese and results in a higher percentage of leg muscle weight, lower pH, and lower moisture content.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary liver cancer. Hepatectomy and transcatheter arterial chemoembolisation (TACE) are generally accepted methods for the treatment of huge HCCs, but the most appropriate treatment is still controversial. We report a 43-year woman with giant HCC, who successfully underwent surgery. The patient was admitted with persistent right upper abdominal pain and fever. Before operation, we assessed the residual liver function and reserve capacity of the patient, and excluded the relevant surgical contra-indications. The results showed that the patient could tolerate surgical treatment, so we performed HCC resection, and the patient was successfully treated. Individualised treatment should be carried out according to tumor factors, baseline liver function and patient's functional status, so as to maximise the benefit to patients. Overfeeding causes severe steatosis but not inflammation in goose liver, suggesting existence of protective components. Previous studies have shown that some intestinal microbes and their metabolites damage intestinal structural integrity and function, thus causing inflammation in the development of human and mouse nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Therefore, this study hypothesizes that intestinal structural integrity of goose is maintained during overfeeding, which may provide goose fatty liver a protective mechanism against inflammation. To test this hypothesis, 48 seventy-day-old healthy Landes male geese were overfed (as overfeeding group) or normally fed (as control group). Blood and intestine (jejunum, ileum, and cecum) samples were harvested on the 12th and 24th d of overfeeding. Data showed that goose fatty liver was successfully induced by 24 d of overfeeding. Hematoxylin-eosin staining analysis indicated that the arrangement of villi and crypts in the intestine was orderly, and the intestinal structure was intact with no pathological symptoms in the 2 groups. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and quantitative PCR analysis indicated no significant differences in the expression of tight junction and inflammation-related genes as well as plasma lipopolysaccharide concentration between the groups. Ileal hypertrophy and cecal atrophy were observed in the overfed vs. control geese, probably because of change of sphingolipid metabolism. Activation of apoptotic pathway may help cecum avoid necrosis-induced inflammation. In conclusion, healthy and intact intestine provides a layer of protection for goose fatty liver against inflammation. Sphingolipid metabolism may be involved in the adaptation of ileum and cecum to overfeeding. The hypertrophy of ileum makes it an important contributor to the development of goose fatty liver. The atrophy and decline in the function of cecum may be caused by apoptosis induced by overfeeding.

OBJECTIVE: Microvascular invasion is shown to be an independent risk factor for liver cancer recurrence. Timely treatment may reduce the recurrence rate and prolong total survival time. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of sorafenib in treating patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and microvascular invasion. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, EMBASE, MEDLINE, web of science and Cochrane Library databases for articles published up to December 2019. Two researchers independently reviewed and cross-checked independent reports with sufficient information. A meta-analysis was conducted to assess the impact of sorafenib on mortality in patients with HCC and microvascular involvement. RESULTS: Four studies were included in the qualitative and quantitative analyses, comprising 955 cancer events and 505 cancer deaths. Meta-analyses showed that sorafenib treatment was associated with an improved survival rate versus no sorafenib treatment in patients with HCC and microvascular invasion (relative risk 1.369, 95% confidence interval 1.193, 1.570). CONCLUSIONS: Sorafenib treatment may improve survival in patients with HCC and microvascular invasion. However, due to the potential for residual confounding, the results should be interpreted with caution.

AIMS: Choledocholithiasis is a common and yet potentially debilitating disease of the biliary tract. While certain patients with this disease remain largely asymptomatic or experience mild discomfort, in several cases, patient can suffer biliary inflammation and other serious symptoms. Previous studies have detected elevated serum levels of carbohydrate antigen 199 in patients with choledocholithiasis. We wanted to know whether serum CA199 level in patients with choledocholithiasis is related to the level of inflammation in patients. METHODS: In the present study, we separated a cohort of 135 choledocholithiasis patients into two groups based on their white blood cell counts, which were either 3.5 - 9.5 × 109/L or ≥9.5 × 109/L. We also divided patients into two groups according to CPR < 10 mg/L and CRP ≥ 10 mg/L. At the same time, the correlation between CA199 and CRP level was analyzed. RESULTS: We then used a Rank-sum test to compare serum carbohydrate 199 levels between these groups, revealing significantly higher levels of this antigen in patients with a white cell count ≥9.5 × 109/L (Z = -3.584, P < 0.01). The two groups were grouped by CRP, and the CA199 level was compared. The difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P < 0.01). The correlation analysis between CA199 and CRP showed an obvious correlation (r = 0.574). CONCLUSION: This suggests that in patients with choledocholithiasis, higher circulating carbohydrate antigen 199 levels may correspond to a higher degree of inflammation.
