RESUMEN

CONTEXT: Palliative care (PC) integration is vital, as endorsed by the World Health Organization. Yet, Jordan, a Middle Eastern country with limited resources, faces ongoing challenges despite efforts to improve palliative and home care. Establishing a national PC strategic framework, with government and stakeholder consensus, is essential for ensuring universal access to high-quality palliative care. However, processes for achieving this, particularly in the Middle East, are underreported. OBJECTIVES: This study delineates the process of developing Jordan's National Palliative and Home Care Strategic Framework, reflecting on its five-year impact. Additionally, it identifies barriers to PC progress in Jordan and offers recommendations to stakeholders. METHODS: We conducted a rapid review and analyzed reports, minutes, meetings, and publications. The sequential framework development involved content and situational analysis, expert review, transparent expert consultation, multistage consensus procedures, and high-level advocacy meetings. RESULTS: The National Palliative and Home Care Strategic Framework encompasses six domains: 1) policy, 2) finance, 3) service delivery, 4) opioid access, 5) capacity building, and 6) information, research, monitoring, and evaluation. Government endorsement in April 2018 ignited national engagement, driving policy, service delivery, workforce development, education, training, and research progress. Nonetheless, workforce shortages, limited opioid access, and inadequate funding persist as barriers. CONCLUSION: Jordan's collaborative development of the inaugural National Palliative and Home Care Strategic Framework, endorsed by the government and stakeholders, provides a comprehensive roadmap for PC advancement. While it promises improved services, effective solutions to workforce and opioid access issues are crucial for successful implementation.

RESUMEN

The study aimed to synthesize zinc nanoparticles (Zn-NPs) using an aqueous extract derived from Acacia modesta Wall. leaves. Several characterization techniques were employed to confirm the successful formation of zinc nanoparticles. UV-visible spectrophotometry indicated a peak at 374 nm, validating the bioreduction process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was utilized to analyze the morphology, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to determine particle size and shape, X-ray diffraction (XRD) for crystalline structure analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) for elemental composition and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to identify functional groups. The synthesized Zn-NPs demonstrated remarkable antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (95% inhibition) and moderate antifungal activity against Candida albicans (70% inhibition). In phytotoxicity tests, the Zn-NPs exhibited a 55% reduction in the growth of Lamina minor at the highest dilution (1000 µl). Based on these findings, the study concluded that the green-synthesized Zn-NPs hold great potential as effective antibiotics against pathogenic bacteria and could be utilized in various industrial and agricultural applications.

RESUMEN

Selenium is a mineral that is essential to human health and is widely recognized for its responsibilities as a powerful anticancer vitamin and antibacterial vitamin. Selenium also plays a critical part in the production of vitamin D. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the particular effects that selenium nano-particles (SeNPs') had on the infectious agent Staphylococcus aureus as well as the breast cancer cell lines MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231. The proportion of MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 cells that underwent late apoptosis was dramatically increased by selenium nanoparticles, whereas the number of cells that underwent cell expansion was significantly reduced. There was a wide range of variability in the effects of selenium nanoparticle treatment on cell growth apoptosis, apoptosis rates and patterns of cell cycle arrest. After 2, 4 and 6 hours, researchers found that the development of S. aureus was significantly reduced by selenium nanoparticles at doses of 8.0, 16.0 and 32g/mL. In addition to this, the presence of selenium nanoparticles resulted in a reduced percentage of bacteria that were still alive. According to the findings of the study, there is a need for more research into selenium nanoparticles with the intention of preventing and treating infections caused by S. aureus.

RESUMEN

Background Isotretinoin is a commonly prescribed agent mainly used to treat acne vulgaris. Since its Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval, the subject of its associations with various medical conditions has become a growing interest in many investigational studies. Methodology A retrospective study was conducted using the validated Standardized Patient Evaluation of Eye Dryness (SPEED) questionnaire. All statistical calculations were performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 27.0.1 (IBM SPSS Statistics, Armonk, NY). Results The research study involved 107 participants, predominantly Saudi nationals (98.1%), with an average age of 22 years. Regarding the total cumulative dose (TCD), 40.2% had less than 50 mg/kg, 33.6% had between 50 and 100 mg/kg, and 15.9% had more than 100 mg/kg. The majority (73.8%) did not stop using isotretinoin. The average Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) score, indicating ocular surface disease symptoms, was 26.78. There was no significant association between gender, dose/duration of isotretinoin, TCD, and age, and OSDI scores. However, participants with severe OSDI scores were more likely to have worsened pre-existing eye symptoms compared to those with non-severe OSDI scores (35.1% versus 11.4%, p = 0.011). Conclusions This study contributes to the understanding of the impact of isotretinoin usage on ocular surface health. While no significant associations were found between gender, dose, duration, TCD, and age, and OSDI scores, participants with pre-existing eye symptoms were more likely to experience worsened symptoms during isotretinoin treatment.
