RESUMEN

The 64k pixel DEPFET module is the key sensitive component of the DEPFET Sensor with Signal Compression (DSSC), a large area 2D hybrid detector for capturing and measuring soft X-rays at the European XFEL. The final 1-megapixel camera has to detect photons with energies between [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], and must provide a peak frame rate of [Formula: see text] to cope with the unique bunch structure of the European XFEL. This work summarizes the functionalities and properties of the first modules assembled with full-format CMOS-DEPFET arrays, featuring [Formula: see text] hexagonally-shaped pixels with a side length of 136 µm. The pixel sensors utilize the DEPFET technology to realize an extremely low input capacitance for excellent energy resolution and, at the same time, an intrinsic capability of signal compression without any gain switching. Each pixel of the readout ASIC includes a DEPFET-bias current cancellation circuitry, a trapezoidal-shaping filter, a 9-bit ADC and a 800-word long digital memory. The trimming, calibration and final characterization were performed in a laboratory test-bench at DESY. All detector features are assessed at [Formula: see text]. An outstanding equivalent noise charge of [Formula: see text]e-rms is achieved at 1.1-MHz frame rate and gain of 26.8 Analog-to-Digital Unit per keV ([Formula: see text]). At [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], a noise of [Formula: see text] e-rms and a dynamic range of [Formula: see text] are obtained. The highest dynamic range of [Formula: see text] is reached at [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]. These values can fulfill the specification of the DSSC project.

RESUMEN

Femtosecond transient soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a very promising technique that can be employed at X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs) to investigate out-of-equilibrium dynamics for material and energy research. Here, a dedicated setup for soft X-rays available at the Spectroscopy and Coherent Scattering (SCS) instrument at the European X-ray Free-Electron Laser (European XFEL) is presented. It consists of a beam-splitting off-axis zone plate (BOZ) used in transmission to create three copies of the incoming beam, which are used to measure the transmitted intensity through the excited and unexcited sample, as well as to monitor the incoming intensity. Since these three intensity signals are detected shot by shot and simultaneously, this setup allows normalized shot-by-shot analysis of the transmission. For photon detection, an imaging detector capable of recording up to 800 images at 4.5 MHz frame rate during the FEL burst is employed, and allows a photon-shot-noise-limited sensitivity to be approached. The setup and its capabilities are reviewed as well as the online and offline analysis tools provided to users.

Flip-chip bonding is a key packaging technology to achieve the smallest form factor possible. Using copper as a direct under-bump metal and performing bonding under little force and at a low temperature eliminates the processing step for the deposition of a suitable wetting metal and offers an economical solution for electronic chip packaging. In this paper, various samples with copper and nickel-gold surface finishes are used to apply an in-house solder bumping, flip-chip bonding and reflow process to exhibit the bump-bond feasibility. Native oxides are reduced using process gases, and copper surface protection and solder wetting are achieved using copper formate. Lead-free 40 µm solder balls were bumped on 80 µm copper pads and 120 µm copper pillars to demonstrate a full intermetallic Cu-Cu bond as a base study for stacking applications. Using a low-force bonding technique, various chips with different dimensions were bonded at 0.5-16 MPa, followed by a reflow step at a maximum temperature of 270 °C. Then, 30 µm solder balls are utilized to bump the samples with NiAu and Cu bond pads at 50 µm pitch. A mean shear strength of 44 MPa was obtained for the 30 µm Cu samples. To the best of our knowledge, 30 µm solder bumping directly on the copper pads by producing copper formate is a novel research contribution.

Large amounts of resources are spent annually to improve educational achievement and to close the gender gap in sciences with typically very modest effects. In 2010, a 15-min self-affirmation intervention showed a dramatic reduction in this gender gap. We reanalyzed the original data and found several critical problems. First, the self-affirmation hypothesis stated that women's performance would improve. However, the data showed no improvement for women. There was an interaction effect between self-affirmation and gender caused by a negative effect on men's performance. Second, the findings were based on covariate-adjusted interaction effects, which imply that self-affirmation reduced the gender gap only for the small sample of men and women who did not differ in the covariates. Third, specification-curve analyses with more than 1,500 possible specifications showed that less than one quarter yielded significant interaction effects and less than 3% showed significant improvements among women.

We review and evaluate selection methods, a prominent class of techniques first proposed by Hedges (1984) that assess and adjust for publication bias in meta-analysis, via an extensive simulation study. Our simulation covers both restrictive settings as well as more realistic settings and proceeds across multiple metrics that assess different aspects of model performance. This evaluation is timely in light of two recently proposed approaches, the so-called p-curve and p-uniform approaches, that can be viewed as alternative implementations of the original Hedges selection method approach. We find that the p-curve and p-uniform approaches perform reasonably well but not as well as the original Hedges approach in the restrictive setting for which all three were designed. We also find they perform poorly in more realistic settings, whereas variants of the Hedges approach perform well. We conclude by urging caution in the application of selection methods: Given the idealistic model assumptions underlying selection methods and the sensitivity of population average effect size estimates to them, we advocate that selection methods should be used less for obtaining a single estimate that purports to adjust for publication bias ex post and more for sensitivity analysis-that is, exploring the range of estimates that result from assuming different forms of and severity of publication bias.

RESUMEN

A novel technique based on silicon micromachining for fabrication of linear arrays of high-frequency piezoelectric micromachined ultrasound transducers (pMUT) is presented. Piezoelectric elements are formed by deposition of lead zirconia titanate into etched features of a silicon substrate such that the depth of these features determine the element thickness and hence the resonance frequency. The process leaves a near planar surface which is ideal for further wafer level processing such as top electrode and interconnect formation. A fabricated element is characterized by pulse echo response.

RESUMEN

In this paper results are presented from fluorescence-yield X-ray absorption fine-structure spectroscopy measurements with a new seven-cell silicon drift detector (SDD) module. The complete module, including an integrated circuit for the detector readout, was developed and realised at DESY utilizing a monolithic seven-cell SDD. The new detector module is optimized for applications like XAFS which require an energy resolution of approximately 250-300 eV (FWHM Mn Kalpha) at high count rates. Measurements during the commissioning phase proved the excellent performance for this type of application.

RESUMEN

The article presents the result from a Danish survey on access and use of green areas and the impact on experienced stress and obesity. The statistical results indicate that access to a garden or short distances to green areas from the dwelling are associated with less stress and a lower likelihood of obesity. The number of visits cannot explain the effects of green areas on the health indicators. It is suggested that the significance of distance to green areas is mainly derived from its correlation with the character of the neighbourhood and its conduciveness to outdoor activities and "healthy" modes of travel.

RESUMEN

A silicon drift detector (SDD) was used for ex situ and time-resolved in situ fluorescence X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) on low-concentrated catalyst samples. For a single-element and a seven-element SDD the energy resolution and the peak-to-background ratio were verified at high count rates, sufficient for fluorescence XAFS. An experimental set-up including the seven-element SDD without any cooling and an in situ cell with gas supply and on-line gas analysis was developed. With this set-up the reduction and oxidation of a zeolite supported catalyst containing 0.3 wt% platinum was followed by fluorescence near-edge scans with a time resolution of 10 min each. From ex situ experiments on low-concentrated platinum- and gold-based catalysts fluorescence XAFS scans could be obtained with sufficient statistical quality for a quantitative analysis. Structural information on the gold and platinum particles could be extracted by both the Fourier transforms and the near-edge region of the XAFS spectra. Moreover, it was found that with the seven-element SDD concentrations of the element of interest as low as 100 ppm can be examined by fluorescence XAFS.
