RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Insurers often commission psychiatric experts to evaluate the eligibility of workers with mental disorders for disability benefits, by estimating their residual work capacity (RWC). We investigated the validity of a standardized, computer-based battery of established diagnostic instruments, for evaluating the personality, cognition, performance, symptom burden, and symptom validity of claimants. METHODS: One hundred and fifty-three claimants for benefits were assessed by the assembled test battery, which was applied in addition to a conventional clinical work disability evaluation. RESULTS: A principal component analysis of the test and questionnaire battery data revealed six factors (Negative Affectivity, Self-Perceived Work Ability, Behavioral Dysfunction, Working Memory, Cognitive Processing Speed, and Excessive Work Commitment). Claimants with low, medium, and high RWC exclusively varied in the factor Negative Affectivity. Importantly, this factor also showed a strong association to psychiatric ratings of capacity limitations in psychosocial functioning. CONCLUSIONS: The findings demonstrate that the used test battery allows a substantiation of RWC estimates and of psychiatric ratings by objective and standardized data. If routinely incorporated in work disability evaluations, the test battery could increase their transparency for all stakeholders (insurers, claimants, medical experts, expert case-coordinators, and legal practitioners) and would open new avenues for research in the field of insurance medicine.Implications for rehabilitationThe residual work capacity (RWC) estimation by medical experts is internationally good practice, but plagued by a relatively low interrater agreement.The current study shows that psychiatric RWC estimates and capacity limitation ratings can be substantiated by data from objective, standardized psychometric instruments.Systematically using such instruments might help to improve the poor interrater agreement for RWC estimates in work disability evaluations.Such data could also be used for adopting vocational trainings and return-to-work programs to the individual needs of workers with mental health problems.

This meta-analysis synthesizes research on interrater reliability of Criteria-Based Content Analysis (CBCA). CBCA is an important component of Statement Validity Assessment (SVA), a forensic procedure used in many countries to evaluate whether statements (e.g., of sexual abuse) are based on experienced or fabricated events. CBCA contains 19 verbal content criteria, which are frequently adapted for research on detecting deception. A total of k = 82 hypothesis tests revealed acceptable interrater reliabilities for most CBCA criteria, as measured with various indices (except Cohen's kappa). However, results were largely heterogeneous, necessitating moderator analyses. Blocking analyses and meta-regression analyses on Pearson's r resulted in significant moderators for research paradigm, intensity of rater training, type of rating scale used, and the frequency of occurrence (base rates) for some CBCA criteria. The use of CBCA summary scores is discouraged. Implications for research vs. field settings, for future research and for forensic practice in the United States and Europe are discussed. Rapid motor responses to visual stimuli can involve both the activation and inhibition of motor responses. Here, we trace the early processing dynamics of response generation, examining whether activation and inhibition events form a strict sequence when elicited by sequential stimuli, as we would expect if motor events are driven by fast, stimulus-triggered feedforward sweeps. We employed identical stimuli in two complementary paradigms. In response priming, responses to a target stimulus are speeded or slowed by a masked prime triggering the same or an alternative response, respectively. By prolonging the prime-target interval, the response-priming effect can reverse to form the negative compatibility effect (NCE), especially when the mask contains response-relevant features. We report two experiments in which primed pointing movements going in ten possible directions were measured with response-relevant, response-irrelevant, or no masks interleaved between the primes and targets, while selective visual attention was varied. We showed that in response priming, initial responses are controlled exclusively by the prime. In the NCE, however, even the earliest movement phase is controlled jointly by the prime, mask, and target information, and a massive force in counterdirection to the primed response reverses the priming effects specifically for slow responses. We conclude that response priming reflects a strict sequence of feedforward response activations, whereas the activation/inhibition events in the NCE are not strictly serial, but integrate information from the different stimuli over time. Even though the mask features and visual attention modulate the NCE, its major source is a mask-induced, direction-specific thrust reversal of the initial response.

This meta-analysis investigates linguistic cues to deception and whether these cues can be detected with computer programs. We integrated operational definitions for 79 cues from 44 studies where software had been used to identify linguistic deception cues. These cues were allocated to six research questions. As expected, the meta-analyses demonstrated that, relative to truth-tellers, liars experienced greater cognitive load, expressed more negative emotions, distanced themselves more from events, expressed fewer sensory-perceptual words, and referred less often to cognitive processes. However, liars were not more uncertain than truth-tellers. These effects were moderated by event type, involvement, emotional valence, intensity of interaction, motivation, and other moderators. Although the overall effect size was small, theory-driven predictions for certain cues received support. These findings not only further our knowledge about the usefulness of linguistic cues to detect deception with computers in applied settings but also elucidate the relationship between language and deception.
