OBJECTIVE: As a large and populous country, China releases a high number of diagnostic criteria. However, the published diagnostic criteria have not yet been systematically analyzed. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the characteristics, development methods, reporting quality, and evidence basis of diagnostic criteria published in China. METHODS: We searched five databases for diagnostic criteria from their inception until July 31, 2023. All diagnostic criteria were screened through abstract and full-text reading, and included if satisfying the prespecified criteria. Two researchers independently extracted data on the characteristics, development methods, reporting quality, and evidence basis of diagnostic criteria. RESULTS: A total of 143 diagnostic criteria were included. In terms of development methods, the proportions of diagnostic criteria that involved a systematic literature search (n = 2; 1.4%; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.4% to 5.0%), adoption of formal consensus methods (n = 4; 2.8%; 95% CI, 1.1% to 7.0%), and criteria validation (n = 9; 6.3%; 95% CI, 3.3% to 11.5%) were relatively low. Regarding reporting quality, the average compliance with the ACCORD checklist was 5.1%; none of the diagnostic criteria reported on registration, expert inclusion criteria, expert recruitment process, or consensus results. A majority (58.7%; 95% CI, 50.6% to 66.5%) of criteria did not cite any research, and only one (0.7%; 95% CI, 0.1% to 3.9%) criterion was derived from a systematic review. Moreover, only 16.1% (95% CI, 11.0% to 23.0%) of diagnostic criteria used evidence from the Chinese population. CONCLUSION: The diagnostic criteria developed in China exhibit serious flaws, particularly in evidence retrieval, formation of expert panels, consensus methods, and validation. Additionally, only few diagnostic criteria used a systematic synthesis of the evidence or evidence from the China. There is an urgent need to enhance the methodology for developing diagnostic criteria.

OBJECTIVES: Patient and public versions of guidelines (PVGs) have gradually gained wide recognition and attention from the public and the society due to their scientific, professional, and authoritative characteristics. This study aims to survey the awareness and knowledge of PVGs among stakeholders in China. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: This was a cross-sectional survey among stakeholders (guideline developers, clinicians, journal editors, patients, and the public) in China. We self-designed the questionnaire and distributed it through the Questionnaire Star platform. The primary outcomes were awareness of PVGs and opinions about the development methodology, writing, dissemination, and implementation of PVGs. The Kruskal-Wallis H test and post hoc multiple comparison tests were used to compare the levels of awareness of PVGs between different subgroups of respondents. RESULTS: A total of 1319 valid questionnaires were collected: 722 from guideline developers, 136 from clinicians, 83 from journal editors, 284 from patients, and 94 from members of the public. Of all respondents, 253 (19.2%) had not heard of PVGs, 349 (26.5%) had heard of PVGs but had no further knowledge, 475 (36.0%) had some knowledge of PVGs, and 242 (18.3%) were familiar with or had participated in the development of PVGs. Guideline developers, clinicians, and journal editors had higher awareness than patients and the public. Higher education and older age also correlated with higher awareness of PVGs. More than half (52.9%) of guideline developers considered that both rewriting of the source guidelines and direct development as independent documents were appropriate methods for developing PVGs. The survey respondents agreed that clinicians (97.3%), guideline methodologists (76.6%), representatives of patients and the public (74.5%), and medical editors or writers (63.4%) should participate in the development of PVGs. More than 80% of the respondents agreed that the quality of evidence and strength of recommendations should be presented; however, there was no consensus in the form of presentation. CONCLUSIONS: The level of awareness of PVGs among stakeholders in China is relatively low and differs between different stakeholder groups, but the majority of key stakeholders have a positive attitude toward PVGs. The collection of the perspectives and opinions on the development methods, writing, dissemination, and implementation provides a key reference and basis for the future optimization and improvement of PVGs development.

OBJECTIVES: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma present challenges in effective treatment, with 50%-60% of cases exhibiting recurrence or metastasis, often resistant to surgery alone. Immunotherapy, a promising approach, does not guarantee benefits for all patients. Thus, the imperative lies in identifying reliable biomarkers for predicting immunotherapy efficacy. FAM3D, a protein-coding gene known for its potent chemotactic activity in human peripheral blood monocytes and neutrophils, plays a crucial role in regulating tumour immune responses and holds promise as an immune biomarker. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We employed comprehensive database analysis to scrutinise FAM3D, evaluating its gene expression, mutation profiles and prognostic implications in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, along with its associations with clinical characteristics and immune cell infiltration. Complementary functional experiments were conducted to delve into the potential mechanisms governed by FAM3D. RESULTS: Our findings establish a significant correlation between low FAM3D expression and the invasiveness and metastatic potential of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. FAM3D likely exerts its influence through the regulation of epithelial-mesenchymal transition. CONCLUSIONS: FAM3D emerges as a valuable biomarker for predicting the responsiveness of patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma to immunotherapy, holding substantial clinical diagnostic and therapeutic relevance.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the frequency, determinants, stages, and barriers of patient and public involvement (PPI) in systematic reviews and to explore its association with the dissemination of reviews. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: We examined systematic reviews that required the inclusion of a PPI declaration, published in The BMJ between January 1, 2015, and December 31, 2022. Multivariable analysis was used to assess the association between PPI and key variables. We investigated the association between PPI and the dissemination of reviews using Altmetric scores, citations, and full-text views. RESULTS: A total of 217 systematic reviews were included, of which 56 (25.8%, 95% CI 20.0%-31.6%) included PPI, with a steady increase from 5.9% (1/17) in 2015 to 44.4% (4/35) in 2022. Of the 217 systematic reviews, 160 (73.7%) involved methodologists as co-authors. Factors significantly associated with a higher proportion of PPI included the publication year after 2019 (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 2.46, 95% CI 1.26-4.83), the involvement of methodologist (aOR 3.08; 95% CI 1.27-7.47), and being led by researchers from high-income countries (aOR 5.47; 95% CI 1.23-24.30). Reviews that included PPI had higher Altmetric scores per month (6.6 vs 3.4, P = .002) and more monthly full-text (1048.6 vs 636.5, P < .001) and PDF (217.7 vs 129.0, P < .001) views than reviews without PPI. However, there was no difference in the monthly citations (2.2 vs 2.0, P = .365) between reviews with and without PPI. CONCLUSION: The proportion of systematic reviews reporting PPI in The BMJ has increased over time, possibly due to journal policies, but it still remains at a low level. Reviews led by researchers from high-income countries or involving methodologists are associated with a higher frequency of PPI within The BMJ. Furthermore, reviews incorporating PPI within The BMJ have a higher potential for broad dissemination.

Background Although favorable outcomes have been reported with radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT), the long-term efficacy remains insufficiently investigated. Purpose To evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of US-guided percutaneous RFA in patients with SHPT undergoing dialysis and to identify possible predictors associated with treatment failure. Materials and Methods This retrospective study included consecutive patients with SHPT with at least one enlarged parathyroid gland accessible for RFA who were undergoing dialysis at seven tertiary centers from May 2013 to July 2022. The primary end point was the proportion of patients with parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels less than or equal to 585 pg/mL at the end of follow-up. Secondary end points were the proportion of patients with normal calcium and phosphorus levels, the technical success rate, procedure-related complications, and improvement in self-rated hyperparathyroidism-related symptoms (0-3 ranking scale). The Wilcoxon signed rank test and generalized estimating equation model were used to evaluate treatment outcomes. Univariable and multivariable regression analyses identified variables associated with treatment failure (recurrent or persistent hyperparathyroidism). Results This study included 165 patients (median age, 51 years [IQR, 44-60 years]; 92 female) and 582 glands. RFA effectively reduced PTH, calcium, and phosphorus levels, with targeted ranges achieved in 78.2% (129 of 165), 72.7% (120 of 165), and 60.0% (99 of 165) of patients, respectively, at the end of follow-up (mean, 51 months). For the RFA sessions, the technical success rate was 100% (214 of 214). Median symptom scores (ostealgia, arthralgia, pruritus) decreased (all P < .001). Regarding complications, only hypocalcemia (45.8%, 98 of 214) was common. Treatment failure occurred in 36 patients (recurrent [n = 5] or persistent [n = 31] hyperparathyroidism). The only potential independent predictor of treatment failure was having less than four treated glands (odds ratio, 17.18; 95% CI: 4.34, 67.95; P < .001). Conclusion US-guided percutaneous RFA was effective and safe in the long term as a nonsurgical alternative for patients with SHPT undergoing dialysis; the only potential independent predictor of treatment failure was a lower number (<4) of treated glands. © RSNA, 2024 Supplemental material is available for this article.

OBJECTIVE: To prospectively evaluate the outcomes of ultrasound (US)-guided radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in tertiary hyperparathyroidism (THPT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with THPT underwent RFA between September 2017 and January 2022. Laboratory parameters, including serum intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) levels, were monitored for 48 months after RFA and compared with the levels at baseline. Complications related to RFA and changes in hyperparathyroidism-related clinical symptoms were recorded before and after RFA. RESULTS: A total of 42 patients with THPT were recruited for this study. Ultimately, 36 patients with renal failure and 2 patients who underwent successful renal transplantation (male:female, 17:21; median age, 54.5 years) were enrolled. The follow-up time was 21.5 ± 19.0 months in the 36 patients with renal failure. In these 36 patients, iPTH levels were significantly decreased to 261.1 pg/mL at 48 months compared with the baseline value of 1284.9 pg/mL (P = 0.012). Persistent hyperparathyroidism, defined as iPTH levels maintained at > 585.0 pg/mL for 6 months after treatment, occurred in 4.0% of patients (1/25). Recurrent hyperparathyroidism, defined as iPTH levels > 585.0 pg/mL after 6 months, were 4.0% (1/25) and 0.0% (0/9) at 6 months and 4 years after treatment, respectively. In two patients with THPT after successful renal transplantation, iPTH decreased from the baseline value of 242.5 and 115.9 pg/mL to 171.0 and 62.0 pg/mL at 6 months after treatment. All complications resolved within 6 months of ablation without medical intervention, except in 10.5% (4/38) patients with permanent hypocalcemia. The overall symptom recovery rate was 58.8% (10/17). The severity scores for bone pain, arthralgia, and itchy skin associated with hyperparathyroidism improved after treatment (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: US-guided RFA is an effective and safe alternative to surgery in the treatment of patients with TPTH and improves hyperparathyroidism-related clinical symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Reoperation for recurrent or persistent secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) after parathyroidectomy is challenging due to surgical scars and postoperative adhesions. Therefore, there is an increasing need to develop a new minimally invasive therapy. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the efficacy of ultrasound (US)-guided radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in patients with recurrent or persistent SHPT after parathyroidectomy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From March 2013 to January 2022, 20 enlarged parathyroid glands in 10 patients with recurrent or persistent SHPT were treated with US-guided RFA. The levels of serum intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH), calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP), as well as clinical symptoms, were compared before and after RFA. The ablation procedure-related complications were also evaluated. The target range for iPTH levels was approximately 2-9 times the upper limit of normal (130-585 pg/mL). RESULTS: The mean follow-up time was 49.6 ± 34.5 months (range from 6 to101 months). The levels of serum iPTH, Ca, and P decreased significantly one day post-ablation. Six months after RFA, 70% of patients reached the targets for iPTH, and 50% of patients reached targets at the end of follow-up. Two patients underwent repeat ablation at 9 months and 6 years after RFA, respectively, due to persistently elevated iPTH levels, and both had serum iPTH concentrations in the recommended range at the recent follow-up visit. The patients' clinical symptoms significantly improved after ablation. Major complications after RFA included hoarseness (2/10) and permanent hypoparathyroidism (1/10). Severe hypocalcemia occurred in four patients (4/10) after ablation. CONCLUSION: US-guided percutaneous RFA for recurrent or persistent SHPT is safe, efficacious, and repeatable, and can significantly improve hyperparathyroidism-related symptoms.

Background: Intrathyroid thymic carcinoma (ITTC) is a rare malignant tumor of the thyroid, probably arising from ectopic thymus or branchial pouch remnants. Most of the literature recommended radical resection as the fundamental treatment for ITTC, and postoperative radiation appears to be able to reduce the recurrence rate in patients with advanced ITTC. However, the issue of adjuvant radiotherapy in completely resected early-stage ITTC has been controversial. Case presentation: Here, we reported a new case of early-stage ITTC that treated with total thyroidectomy and the right central neck dissection. Postoperative external beam radiation therapy (50.0 Gy/25 fractions) was given to the thyroid bed and bilateral cervical lymph node area since the tumor involved part of the sternal thyroid muscle. At 4-year follow-up after completion of radiotherapy, she is without evidence of locally recurrent or distant disease. Conclusion: Since there are no current guidelines for early-stage ITTC, in combination with this case and previous literature, we may suggest routine adjuvant radiotherapy should be considered in patients with incompletely resected tumors and extraparenchymal extension of ITTC. Moreover, we summarized comprehensive and advanced diagnosis, treatment, prognosis of ITTC and comparison between ITTC, primary squamous cell carcinoma of thyroid gland, differentiated thyroid cancer, and anaplastic thyroid cancer.

PURPOSE: Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) is a frequently encountered problem in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) prior to renal transplantation (RTP), and the successful management of SPHP currently is challenging. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effectiveness of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for SHPT as a bridge to RTP and to evaluate post-transplantation outcomes. METHODS: Patients with SHPT receiving RFA treatment were retrospectively reviewed, and those underwent RTP after ablation were enrolled. Serum parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcium, and phosphate levels were collected before ablation and at follow-up periods. The primary endpoints are PTH values at time of transplantation and at the final follow-up. The secondary endpoints were RFA-related complications, serum calcium and phosphate concentrations, and allograft function. RESULTS: Eleven patients with 43 enlarged parathyroid glands were treated with 16 RFA sessions and enrolled in the study. Complete ablation was achieved in all glands with transient hoarseness and hypocalcemia occurring in two and five of the treatments, respectively. At time of transplantation, serum PTH levels (246.7 ± 182.6 pg/mL) were significantly lower than that before RFA (1666.55 ± 874.48 pg/mL, p < 0.001) and were all within guideline-oriented range. The median follow-up period was 57.2 months. At last visit, all patients were alive, with normal PTH values and functioning grafts. CONCLUSIONS: Ultrasound-guided RFA is effective for destroying hyperplastic parathyroid tissues in SHPT patients, whose PTH values fall within the guideline-oriented range both pre-and post-transplantation. Percutaneous RFA acts as an effective bridge to RTP and might provide a new management paradigm designed to improve post-transplant outcomes.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: To compare the clinical and economic effects of ultrasound (US)-guided radiofrequency ablation (RFA) with parathyroidectomy (PTX) for primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: From April 2014 to April 2021, 123 PHPT patients who received US-guided RFA or PTX were studied. Propensity score (PS) matching was used to balance the baseline data of the two groups. The rates of cure, recurrent and persistent PHPT, and complications were compared. A Chinese healthcare system perspective cost minimization analysis was conducted. RESULTS: After PS matching, 37 patient pairs (1:1) were created for the two groups. Follow-up was 27.2 ± 10.6 months and 28.8 ± 16.1 months for the RFA and PTX groups, respectively. At the last follow-up, there was no evidence of differences regarding clinical cure rate between the two groups (RFA vs. PTX, 91.9% vs. 94.6%, p = 1.000). Recurrent PHPT did not develop in any patient. One patient in each group had persistent PHPT. The incidence of complications and side effects, except postoperative pain (RFA vs. PTX, 16.2% vs. 40.5%, p = 0.020), were no significant difference between the two groups (all, p > 0.05). The incremental cost was -$284.00; thus, RFA was more cost-effective. For patients with employee medical insurance or resident medical insurance, the incremental costs (RFA vs. PTX) were -$391.94 and -$49.43, respectively. CONCLUSION: There were no significant differences in efficacy and safety between RFA and PTX. As the incremental cost for RFA compared with PTX was negative, RFA may be used as a more cost-effective nonsurgical treatment alternative for PHPT.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy and safety of ultrasound (US)-guided radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective study enrolled 39 participants (14 male, 25 female; mean age, 59.5 ± 15.3 [range, 18-87] years) between September 1, 2018, and January 31, 2021. All participants had parathyroid lesions causing PHPT, proven biochemically and through imaging. The imaging features of the PHPT nodules, including the shape, margin, size, composition, and location, were evaluated before treatment. Serum intact parathyroid hormone, calcium, and phosphorus levels; parathyroid nodule volume; and PHPT-related symptoms were recorded before and after treatment. We calculated the technical success, biochemical cure, and clinical cure rates for these patients. Complications were evaluated during and after the ablation. RESULTS: Complete ablation was achieved in 38 of the 39 nodules in the 39 enrolled participants. All the patients were treated in one session. The technical success rate was 97.4% (38/39). The mean follow-up duration was 13.2 ± 4.6 (range, 6.0-24.9) months. At 6 and 12 months post-RFA, the biochemical cure rates were 82.1% (32/39) and 84.4% (27/32), respectively, and the clinical cure rates were 100% (39/39) and 96.9% (31/32), respectively. Only 2.6% (1/39) of the patients had recurrent PHPT. At 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after technically successful RFA, 44.7% (17/38), 34.3% (12/35), 15.8% (6/38), and 12.5% (4/32) of participants, respectively, had elevated eucalcemic parathyroid hormone levels. Recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis occurred in 5.1% (2/39) of the patients, who recovered spontaneously within 1-3 months. CONCLUSION: US-guided RFA was effective and safe for PHPT patients. RFA may be an alternative treatment tool for patients who cannot tolerate or refuse to undergo surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Few studies have systematically developed predictive models for clinical evaluation of the malignancy risk of solid breast nodules. We performed a retrospective review of female patients who underwent breast surgery or puncture, aiming to establish a predictive model for evaluating the clinical malignancy risk of solid breast nodules. METHOD: Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify independent variables and establish a predictive model based on a model group (207 nodules). The regression model was further validated using a validation group (112 nodules). RESULTS: We identified six independent risk factors (X3, boundary; X4, margin; X6, resistive index; X7, S/L ratio; X9, increase of maximum sectional area; and X14, microcalcification) using multivariate analysis. The combined predictive formula for our model was: Z=-5.937 + 1.435X3 + 1.820X4 + 1.760X6 + 2.312X7 + 3.018X9 + 2.494X14. The accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, missed diagnosis rate, misdiagnosis rate, negative likelihood ratio, and positive likelihood ratio of the model were 88.39%, 90.00%, 87.80%, 10.00%, 12.20%, 7.38, and 0.11, respectively. CONCLUSION: This predictive model is simple, practical, and effective for evaluation of the malignancy risk of solid breast nodules in clinical settings.

INTRODUCTION: Mucinous breast carcinoma is a rare histologic subtype of primary breast cancers accounting for 1-6%. It is a rare histological variant in young patients and usually presents without lymph node involvement, and its pathological response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy is rarely reported. CASE PRESENTATION: Pure mucinous breast carcinoma in a 25-year-old female was treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy every 3 weeks for 8 cycles. After the fifth cycle, the mass size showed no change. We performed modified radical mastectomy in the left breast and axillary lymph node clearance. However, the pathological report showed a complete elimination of both the breast tumor and axillary lymph nodes, which were filled with mucus but did not contain malignant cells. DISCUSSION: Chemotherapy was profoundly effective against the tumor cells, but ineffective against large amounts of extracellular mucus. Even though the cancer cells were sensitive to chemotherapy, the volume of mucinous cancer couldnot be reduced. CONCLUSION: In summary, the evaluation criteria of tumor response to chemotherapy based on maximum diameter only should be considered insufficient for mucinous carcinoma.

To evaluate safety and efficacy of one- vs. two-session radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of parathyroid hyperplasia for patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) and to compare the outcome of both methods on hypocalcemia. Patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism underwent ultrasound guided RFA of parathyroid hyperplasia. Patients were alternately assigned to either group 1 (n = 28) with RFA of all 4 glands in one session or group 2 (n = 28) with RFA of 2 glands in a first session and other 2 glands in a second session. Serum parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcium, phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) values were measured at a series of time points after RFA. RFA parameters, including operation duration and ablation time and hospitalization length and cost, were compared between the two groups. Mean PTH decreased in group 1 from 1865.18 ± 828.93 pg/ml to 145.72 ± 119.27 pg/ml at 1 day after RFA and in group 2 from 2256.64 ± 1021.72 pg/ml to 1388.13 ± 890.15 pg/ml at 1 day after first RFA and to 137.26 ± 107.12 pg/ml at 1 day after second RFA. Group 1's calcium level decreased to 1.79 ± 0.31 mmol/L at day 1 after RFA and group 2 decreased to 1.89 ± 0.26 mmol/L at day 1 after second session RFA (P < 0.05). Multivariate analysis showed that hypocalcemia was related to serum ALP. Patients with ALP ≥ 566 U/L had lower calcium compared to patients with ALP < 566 U/L up to a month after RFA (P < 0.05). Group 1's RFA time and hospitalization were shorter and had lower cost compared with Group 2. US-guided RFA of parathyroid hyperplasia is a safe and effective method for treating secondary hyperparathyroidism. Single-session RFA was more cost-effective and resulted in a shorter hospital stay compared to two sessions. However, patients with two-session RFA had less hypocalcemia, especially those with high ALP.

BACKGROUND: The effect of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) on nasal symptoms in patients with obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) remains controversial. In addition, possible mechanism(s) remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether CPAP contributes to the onset and exacerbation of allergic rhinitis (AR) in OSAHS patients based on patient-reported changes in nasal symptoms with and without CPAP therapy and the detection of house dust mites (HDMs) in CPAP filters and household environments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a cohort of OSAHS patients, 350 patients who were undergoing CPAP therapy and 100 patients who declined CPAP therapy were retrospectively analyzed. These patients were contacted by telephone and asked to compare their nasal symptoms before and after CPAP therapy. HDMs in air conditioner and CPAP device filters and in household dust samples were detected using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. RESULTS: The prevalence of AR was higher in the CPAP group vs the non-CPAP group (15.8% vs 7.0%, respectively; P = 0.025). The onset of AR among the OSAHS patients with no previous history of AR significantly increased within the first year of CPAP therapy compared with the control group (5.7% vs 0%, respectively; P = 0.031). Meanwhile, the patients with a history of AR were more likely to experience exacerbated rhinitis symptoms within the second year of treatment compared with the control group (7.5% vs 0%, respectively; P = 0.005). There was no significant difference in HDM concentrations between the CPAP and air conditioner filters, yet the concentrations in both the filters were higher than the concentrations in the bedroom dust samples (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: CPAP is associated with the onset and exacerbation of AR in OSAHS patients. Long-term exposure to high concentrations of HDM allergens may be a significant factor.

Little work has been done on the prediction of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma in female patients who have given birth to children, which may be different from other people. We performed a retrospective review of female patients who underwent thyroidectomy, aiming at identifying special predictors of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma in female patients who have given birth to children. Univariate analysis was used to identify potential covariates for the prediction of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to identify independent predictors and construct a regression model based on a training cohort (246 patients) and then the regression model was validated using an independent cohort (80 patients). We found that having not more than one boy, taller-than-wide shape, poorly defined margin, marked hypoechogenicity, and microcalcification were independent risk factors for the papillary thyroid microcarcinoma in multivariate analyses. The combined predictive formula had a high predictive effect for papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (AUC = 0.938 for training cohort and 0.929 for validation cohort, respectively). The combined predictive formula has clinical value in the prognosis of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma and it may be simple and effective to ask fertility condition of patients to increase the US diagnosis accuracy of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma.
