BACKGROUND: Infographics facilitate rapid information dissemination with enriched eye-catching content on social media, but it is unclear what factors affect the adoption of information presented in this way. OBJECTIVES: We tested whether the Information Acceptance Model applies to infographics on healthy lifestyle and fitness topics. METHODS: Two hundred and four university students were invited to participate in an online survey on their acceptance after reading some healthy lifestyle and fitness topics infographics shared on social media. The data collected were analysed using Partial Least Square path modelling. RESULTS: The results confirmed information usefulness as a predictor of information adoption; attitude towards information and information adoption were the predictors of behavioural intention. Information credibility and attitude towards information, but not information quality and needs, were significantly related to information usefulness. Social media usage and education level were factors affecting infographics impressions. DISCUSSION: Results support most hypotheses. It confirms information usefulness as a predictor of infographics adoption. Attitudes towards information and information adoption are predictors of behavioural intentions of following healthy lifestyle and fitness suggestions through social media infographics. CONCLUSION: Social media facilitates interpersonal communication, information exchange and knowledge sharing, and infographics may draw people into healthy lifestyle and fitness information items relevant to them.

Social media use is widely accepted in higher education, connecting students' learning with daily life. Considering the potential of social media to revolutionize the whole spectrum of teaching and learning, this study examines social media usage of business school students of different majors and their perception of social media as learning aids through a quantitative online survey guided by the 5E instructional model, with 423 valid responses from students majoring in accounting, finance, and economics. Results indicated that respondents perceived social media as influential in helping them access study-related information. It facilitated comprehensive learning, information access, information sharing, and student communication with instructors. Significant differences in perceptions of using social media as aids for business learning were found among students of different demographics, including gender, education level, and residence, but not quite for different majors. While various studies have examined the use of social media in education, scant studies focus on business school students under the lens of the 5E instructional model, especially Asians.

This study investigated how personal characteristics such as generalized trust, self-consciousness and friendship, and desire for self-presentation are related to the subjective well-being of university students who use Twitter in Japan, including the effects of their online communication skills. We conducted a survey in May 2021 with Twitter users and analyzed their log data between January 2019 and June 2021. The log data of 501 Twitter users, including the number of public tweets, retweets, and emotional expressions among different patterns of social media (e.g., Twitter only, Twitter + Instagram, Twitter + LINE + Instagram, etc.) and academic standings, were analyzed using ANOVA and stepwise regression analyses. The results showed that the number of tweets and retweets, with and without photos/videos, increased in 2020 and 2021 compared to 2019, and the ratio of positive sentences remained almost the same for the two-and-a-half-year period of this study. However, the proportion of negative sentences increased slightly. It is clear that the factors which affected the university students' subjective well-being differed depending on the respective patterns of social media use.

Fake news and misinformation have become a major social issue. And yet, many researchers concern primarily about political misinformation, leaving healthcare misinformation less emphasized. Nevertheless, healthcare misinformation may create consequences such as delayed diagnosis or treatment of patients or even public health crisis. We conducted an online experiment to test the role of financial incentives and legislation on disseminating online healthcare misinformation. Our findings revealed that financial incentives have a positive but diminishing impact on the likelihood of sharing online healthcare information regardless of validity. However, financial incentives have a stronger impact on attracting readers to share healthcare misinformation that they perceived to be fake. Surprisingly, legislation may deter the sharing of healthcare information that users perceive to be true but cannot deter them from sharing the healthcare misinformation they perceive to be fake. We also provided some practical implications for formulating measures of battling against healthcare misinformation for policymakers.

BACKGROUND: This prospective cohort study was designed to evaluate the survivorship and functional outcomes associated with long-term results of medial open-wedge high tibial osteotomy (MOWHTO) for the treatment of medial compartment knee osteoarthritis in the Chinese population. Although MOWHTO is a well-established procedure in the management of medial osteoarthritis of the knee, the long-term outcome in the Chinese population has not been reported in current literature. We hypothesised that MOWHTO would result in long-term preservation of knee function in Chinese, similar to that reported in the Caucasian population. METHODS: A cohort of 22 young adult patients (age < 55 years old) undergoing MOWHTO for the treatment of symptomatic medial compartment knee osteoarthritis between 2002 and 2008 was retrospectively surveyed with a minimum follow-up of 10 years. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was performed, and the failure modes were investigated. The outcomes on survival (not requiring arthroplasty), clinical outcome (Knee Society Knee Score and Knee Society Function Score) and range of motion (numeric rating scale) at preoperative, 1-year postoperative follow-up and at last follow-up (>10 years) were evaluated. In addition, the mechanical tibiofemoral angle was also measured. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used for statistical evaluation of nonparametric data in these related samples. RESULT: A total of 31 knees in these 22 cases were included. The follow-up rate was 100% at 13.4 ± 1.9 years (11-17). Mean age at time of surgery was 45.8 ± 9.5 years (18-53). At 10-year follow-up, four knees converted to require total knee arthroplasty (survival: 87.1%). Preoperative varus alignment with mechanical tibiofemoral angle of -9.26 ± 2.83 was corrected to 2.58 ± 2.46 after surgery and remained 2.01 ± 3.52 at the latest follow-up. Knee Society Knee Score increased significantly from 53.7 ± 11.1 preoperatively to 93.8 ± 6.8 at 1-year follow-up and 91.8 ± 9.7 at latest follow-up. Similarly, the functional score also increased significantly from 67.4 ± 21.0 preoperatively to 86.3 ± 14.5 at 1-year follow-up and 82.1 ± 16.6 at latest follow-up (p < 0.01). Whereas, the range of motion significantly decreased from 122.7 ± 6.6 preoperatively to 116.1 ± 15.5 at the latest follow-up. CONCLUSION: Even in cases of severe medial osteoarthritis and varus malalignment, MOWHTO would be a good treatment option for management in active Chinese population less than 55 years. Although the long-term survival and functional outcome after MOWHTO was proven to be satisfactory in our cohort during the 10-year follow-up, a larger cohort to illustrate the long-term functional outcome is still warranted. TRANSLATIONAL POTENTIAL: The finding in this study indicated MOWHTO is a feasible treatment option for young adult patients with osteoarthritis to achieve long-term satisfactory results.

Treatment of tendon injuries is challenging. To develop means to augment tendon regeneration, we have previously prepared a soluble, low immunogenic (DNA-free), tendon extracellular matrix fraction (tECM) by urea extraction of juvenile bovine tendons, which is capable of enhancing transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß) mediated tenogenesis in human adipose-derived stem cells (hASCs). Here, we aimed to elucidate the mechanism of tECM-driven hASC tenogenic differentiation in vitro, focusing on the integrin and TGF-ß/SMAD pathways. Our results showed that tECM promoted hASC proliferation and tenogenic differentiation in vitro based on tenogenesis-associated markers. tECM also induced higher expression of several integrin subunits and TGF-ß receptors, and nuclear translocation of p-SMAD2 in hASCs. Pharmacological inhibition of integrin-ECM binding, focal adhesion kinase (FAK) signaling, or TGF-ß signaling independently led to compromised pro-tenogenic effects of tECM and actin fiber polymerization. Additionally, integrin blockade inhibited tECM-driven TGFBR2 expression, while inhibiting TGF-ß signaling decreased tECM-mediated expression of integrin α1, α2, and ß1 in hASCs. Together, these findings suggest that the strong pro-tenogenic bioactivity of tECM is regulated via integrin/TGF-ß signaling crosstalk. Understanding how integrins interact with signaling by TGF-ß and/or other growth factors (GFs) within the tendon ECM microenvironment will provide a rational basis for an ECM-based approach for tendon repair.

Previous clinical studies have reported that gait retraining is an effective non-invasive intervention for patients with medial compartment knee osteoarthritis. These gait retraining programs often target a reduction in the knee adduction moment (KAM), which is a commonly used surrogate marker to estimate the loading in the medial compartment of the tibiofemoral joint. However, conventional evaluation of KAM requires complex and costly equipment for motion capture and force measurement. Gait retraining programs, therefore, are usually confined to a laboratory environment. In this study, machine learning techniques were applied to estimate KAM during walking with data collected from two low-cost wearable sensors. When compared to the traditional laboratory-based measurement, our mobile solution using artificial neural network (ANN) and XGBoost achieved an excellent agreement with R2 of 0.956 and 0.947 respectively. With the implementation of a real-time audio feedback system, the present algorithm may provide a viable solution for gait retraining outside laboratory. Clinical treatment strategies can be developed using the continuous feedback provided by our system.

As the most common form of joint disorder, osteoarthritis (OA) imposes a tremendous burden on health care systems worldwide. Without effective cure, OA represents a unique opportunity for innovation in therapeutic development. In contrast to traditional treatments based on drugs, proteins, or antibodies, stem cells are poised to revolutionize medicine as they possess the capacity to replace and repair tissues and organs such as osteoarthritic joints. Among different types of stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are of mesoderm origin and have been shown to generate cells for tissues of the mesoderm lineage, thus, raising the hope for them being used to treat diseases such as OA. However, given their ability to differentiate into other cell types, MSCs have also been tested in treating a myriad of conditions from diabetes to Parkinson's disease, apparently of the ectoderm and endoderm lineages. There are ongoing debates whether MSCs can differentiate into lineages outside of the mesoderm and consequently their effectiveness in treating conditions from the ectoderm and endoderm lineages. In this review, we discuss the developmental origin of MSCs, their differentiation potential and immunomodulatory effects, as well as their applications in treating OA. We suggest further investigations into new therapies or combination therapies that may provide more effective treatment for bone and joint diseases. Furthermore, cell-based therapy and its associated safety and effectiveness should be carefully evaluated before clinical translation. This review provides updated information on recent approval of clinical trials and related applications of MSCs, and discusses additional efforts on cell-based therapy for treating OA and other joint and bone diseases.

BACKGROUND: Oxford Knee Scale (OKS) is a commonly used instrument to assess the symptoms and functional status in people with knee osteoarthritis. However, a Chinese version of this scale is not yet available. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to translate the OKS into Chinese and validate the Chinese version of OKS. METHODS: The Chinese OKS was translated from the original English version following the recommendations of the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research. One hundred Chinese reading patients with knee osteoarthritis were recruited from local hospitals and physiotherapy clinics. Psychometric properties were evaluated in terms of test-retest reliability and internal consistency. Convergent validity was examined by Spearman rank correlation coefficient tests by comparing its score with the validated Chinese version of the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index and Health Outcome Survey Short Form-36. RESULTS: Chinese OKS demonstrated excellent reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.88). Cronbach α of individual questions was > 0.7. Strong correlation was found between the Chinese OKS and the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (ρ > 0.553, p < 0.001). Fairly strong negative correlation was also found between Chinese OKS and Health Outcome Survey Short Form-36 (ρ = -0.273 to -0.666, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The Chinese translated version of OKS is a reliable and valid instrument for clinical evaluation in Chinese reading patients with knee osteoarthritis.

Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) is a commonly used instrument to assess the symptoms and functional status in people with knee injuries, including knee osteoarthritis. While China ranked the top country in the absolute number of people aged 65 or above, yet there is no validated Chinese version of this outcome measurement. This study translated and validated the KOOS into Chinese version. Chinese KOOS was translated from the original English version following standard forward and backward translation procedures recommended by the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research. Survey was then conducted in clinical settings by a questionnaire comprised Chinese KOOS, WOMAC Osteoarthritis Index, and Short Form 36 health survey (SF-36). One hundred Chinese reading patients with knee osteoarthritis were recruited from the orthopaedic out-patient department in hospitals. Internal consistency of the instrument was measured by Cronbach alpha. Construct validity was examined by Spearman's rank correlation coefficient (ρ) tests by comparing its score with the validated Chinese version of WOMAC Osteoarthritis Index and SF-36, while the test-retest reliability was evaluated by administering the questionnaires twice. Cronbach alpha values of individual questions and its overall value were above 0.70. Fairly strong association was found between the Chinese KOOS and the WOMAC Osteoarthritis Index (ρ = -0.37 to -0.86, p < 0.001). Diverse relationship was observed between Chinese KOOS and SF-36. Excellent test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.89-0.92) was demonstrated. The Chinese translated version of KOOS is a reliable and valid instrument for patients with knee osteoarthritis. The findings of current study might promote multinational investigations in this patient group.

We performed a radiographic review of a consecutive series of 87 resurfacing arthroplasties of the hip, performed between 2004 and 2006. There were 54 cemented femoral components and 33 uncemented femoral components. All of the procedures were performed by the same surgeon using the same approach. There was no difference between the groups with regards to gender, age, pre-operative diagnosis and the average diameter of the components. The primary outcome measured was the neck-prosthesis ratio on standard anterior-posterior pelvis radiographs taken post-operatively and at a minimum follow up of two years. The difference between the immediate post-operative ratio and the most recent radiograph was statistically significant in patients with cemented femoral components (p=0.006), but not in the group with uncemented components (p=0.173). We have demonstrated a difference in narrowing of the femoral neck between cemented and uncemented femoral components in the first two years following surgery.
