RESUMEN

Redox photosensitisers (PSs) play essential roles in various photocatalytic reactions. Herein, we synthesised new redox PSs of 1 : 1 supramolecules that comprise a ring-shaped Re(i) tetranuclear complex with 4+ charges and a Keggin-type heteropolyoxometalate with 4- charges. These PSs photochemically accumulate multi-electrons in one molecule (three or four electrons) in the presence of an electron donor and can supply electrons with different reduction potentials. PSs were successfully applied in the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 using catalysts (Ru(ii) and Re(i) complexes) and triethanolamine as a reductant. In photocatalytic reactions, these supramolecular PSs supply a different number of electrons to the catalyst depending on the redox potential of the intermediate, which is made from the one-electron-reduced species of the catalyst and CO2. Based on these data, information on the reduction potentials of the intermediates was obtained.

Lipid distribution in the liver provides crucial information for diagnosing the severity of fatty liver and fatty liver-associated liver cancer. Therefore, a noninvasive, label-free, and quantitative modality is eagerly anticipated. We report near-infrared hyperspectral imaging for the quantitative visualization of lipid content in mouse liver based on partial least square regression (PLSR) and support vector regression (SVR). Analysis results indicate that SVR with standard normal variate pretreatment outperforms PLSR by achieving better root mean square error (15.3 mg/g) and higher determination coefficient (0.97). The quantitative mapping of lipid content in the mouse liver is realized using SVR.

Fimbrin forms bundles of parallel actin filaments in filopodia, but it remains unclear how fimbrin forms well-ordered bundles. To address this issue, we focused on the cooperative interaction between the actin-binding domain of fimbrin and actin filaments. First, we loosely immobilized actin filaments on a glass surface via a positively charged lipid layer and observed the binding of GFP-fused actin-binding domain 2 of fimbrin using fluorescence microscopy. The actin-binding domain formed low-density clusters with unidirectional growth along actin filaments. When the actin filaments were tightly immobilized to the surface by increasing the charge density of the lipid layer, cluster formation was suppressed. This result suggests that the propagation of cooperative structural changes of actin filaments evoked by binding of the actin-binding domain was suppressed by a strong physical interaction with the glass surface. Interestingly, binding of the fimbrin actin-binding domain shortened the length of loosely immobilized actin filaments. Based on these results, we propose that fimbrin-actin interactions accompanied by unidirectional long-range allostery help the formation of well-ordered parallel actin filament bundles.

The diagnosis of gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) using conventional endoscopy is difficult because submucosal tumor (SMT) lesions like GIST are covered by a mucosal layer. Near-infrared hyperspectral imaging (NIR-HSI) can obtain optical information from deep inside tissues. However, far less progress has been made in the development of techniques for distinguishing deep lesions like GIST. This study aimed to investigate whether NIR-HSI is suitable for distinguishing deep SMT lesions. In this study, 12 gastric GIST lesions were surgically resected and imaged with an NIR hyperspectral camera from the aspect of the mucosal surface. Thus, the images were obtained ex-vivo. The site of the GIST was defined by a pathologist using the NIR image to prepare training data for normal and GIST regions. A machine learning algorithm, support vector machine, was then used to predict normal and GIST regions. Results were displayed using color-coded regions. Although 7 specimens had a mucosal layer (thickness 0.4-2.5 mm) covering the GIST lesion, NIR-HSI analysis by machine learning showed normal and GIST regions as color-coded areas. The specificity, sensitivity, and accuracy of the results were 73.0%, 91.3%, and 86.1%, respectively. The study suggests that NIR-HSI analysis may potentially help distinguish deep lesions.

Contactless thermal imaging generally relies on mid-infrared cameras and fluorescence imaging with temperature-sensitive phosphors. Fluorescent thermometry in the near-infrared (NIR) region is an emerging technique for analysing deep biological tissues but still requires observation depth calibration. We present an NIR fluorescence time-gated imaging (TGI) thermometry technology based on fluorescence lifetime, an intrinsic fluorophore time constant unrelated to observation depth. Fluorophore used is NaYF4 co-doped with Nd3+ and Yb3+ that emits fluorescence at 1000 nm. An agarose gel-based phantom with the fluorophore embedded at a 5-mm depth was covered by sheets of meat to vary the observation depth. The temperature was determined independently from depth by sequences of NIR fluorescence decay images, and the rate of change in the fluorescence lifetime per temperature was almost constant (-0.0092 ~ -0.010 °C-1) at depths ranging from 0 to 1.4 mm of meat, providing non-contact and absolute measurements of temperature in deep biological tissues.

Stabilization by a silyl group on the methylene carbon and a diamine ligand led to the isolation of gem-dichromiomethane species. X-ray crystallography confirmed the identity of the structure of this rare example of reactive gem-dimetalloalkane species. The isolated gem-dichromiomethane complex acted as a storable silylmethylidene carbene equivalent, with reactivity that could be changed dramatically upon addition of a Lewis acid (ZnCl2) and a base (TMEDA) to promote both silylalkylidenation of polar aldehydes and silylcyclopropanation of nonpolar alkenes. Identification of a key reactive species also identified the catalytic version of these transformations and provided insights into the reaction mechanism. In contrast to Simmons-Smith cyclopropanation, the real reactive species for the current cyclopropanation was a chromiocarbene species, not a chromium carbenoid species.

RESUMEN

Treatment of gem-di(iodozincio)methane with pyridine or diamine derivatives resulted in the isolation of a storable gem-di(iodozincio)methane species. Use of the sterically bulky bipyridine ligand gave a gem-di(iodozincio)methane complex, which allowed the first X-ray structural analysis of such species. This work represents a rare example of the isolation of an organometallic reactive species in Schlenk equilibrium and thus provides new insight into the design of efficient and storable organometallic reagents. The isolated gem-di(iodozincio)methane complexes serve as effective methylene dianion synthons for olefination of carbonyl compounds.

RESUMEN

The reaction of 2-(2-arylphenyl)vinyl ethers in the presence of a catalytic amount of bismuth(III) triflate gave substituted phenanthrenes in excellent yields under mild reaction conditions. The reaction was also applied to the construction of other polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), such as chrysene, helicene, and pyrene having a phenanthrene backbone, via regioselective cyclization. This method has the advantages of easy availability of the cyclization precursors, operational simplicity, and high reaction efficiency.
