INTRODUCTION: To date, there are only case reports of penile amputation, a rare urological emergency with a low-treatment successful rate, and there are still no advanced, detailed surgical or perioperative treatment plans. Effective treatments for these rare diseases are urgently needed. METHOD: The researchers summarized the perioperative experience of 20 patients who underwent replantation after complete penile amputation at several hospitals over the past 5 years and shared experience in detail. RESULTS: Only 1 of the 20 surgeries failed, and both urinary and erectile functions were successfully restored in other cases, indicating that the surgical methods and perioperative treatments summarized by researchers are feasible and highly successful for replantation following complete penile amputation. CONCLUSION: Researchers have summarized the method and perioperative plan for replantation following penile amputation based on a summary of 20 cases, thereby providing guidance for urologists and andrologists.

OBJECTIVE: Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare myeloid neoplasm with inflammatory characteristics. This study aims to investigate the correlation between sCD25 levels and clinical characteristics, as well as prognosis, in pediatric LCH. METHODS: Serum sCD25 levels were measured in 370 LCH patients under 18 years old using ELISA assays. The patients were divided into two cohorts based on different treatment regimens. We further assessed the predictive value for the prognosis impact of sCD25 in a test cohort, which was validated in the independent validation cohort. RESULTS: The median serum sCD25 level at diagnosis was 3908 pg/ml (range: 231-44 000pg/ml). sCD25 level was significantly higher in multi-system and risk organ positive (MS RO+) LCH patients compared to single-system(SS) LCH patients (p < 0.001). Patients with elevated sCD25 were more likely to have involvement of risk organs, skin, lung, lymph nodes, or pituitary (all p < 0.05). sCD25 level could predict LCH progression and relapse, with an area under the ROC curve of 60.6 %. The optimal cutoff value was determined at 2921 pg/ml. Patients in the high-sCD25 group had significantly worse progression-free survival compared to those in the low-sCD25 group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Elevated serum sCD25 level at initial diagnosis was associated with high-risk clinical features and worse prognosis. sCD25 level can predict the progression/recurrence of LCH following first-line chemotherapy.

Interbody fusion is an orthopedic surgical procedure to connect two adjacent vertebrae in patients suffering from spinal disc disease. The combination of synthetic bone grafts with protein-based drugs is an intriguing approach to stimulate interbody bone growth, specifically in patients exhibiting restricted bone progression. Recombinant human thrombomodulin (rhTM), a novel protein drug characterized by its superior stability and potency, shows promise in enhancing bone formation. A composite bone graft, termed CaP-rhTM, has been synthesized, combining calcium phosphate (CaP) microparticles as a delivery vehicle for rhTM to facilitate interbody fusion.In vitrostudies have demonstrated that rhTM significantly promotes the proliferation and maturation of preosteoblasts at nanogram dosage, while exerting minimal impact on osteosarcoma cell growth. The expression levels of mature osteoblast markers, including osteocalcin, osteopontin, alkaline phosphatase, and calcium deposition were also enhanced by rhTM. In rat caudal disc model of interbody fusion, CaP-rhTM with 800 ng of drug dosage was implanted along with a polylactic acid cage, to ensure structural stability within the intervertebral space. Microcomputed tomography analyses revealed that from 8 to 24 weeks, CaP-rhTM substantially improves both bone volume and trabecular architecture, in addition to the textural integrity of bony endplate surfaces. Histological examination confirmed the formation of a continuous bone bridge connecting adjacent vertebrae. Furthermore, biomechanical assessment via three-point bending tests indicated an improved bone quality of the fused disc. This study has demostrated that rhTM exhibits considerable potential in promoting osteogenesis. The use of CaP-rhTM has also shown significant improvements in promoting interbody fusion.

Reduced fibroblast activity is a critical factor in the progression of diabetic ulcers. CD248, a transmembrane glycoprotein prominently expressed in activated fibroblasts, plays a pivotal role in wound healing. However, the role of CD248 in diabetic wound healing and the CD248 regulatory pathway remains largely unexplored. Our study shows that CD248 expression is significantly reduced in skin wounds from both diabetic patients and mice. Single-cell transcriptome data analyses reveal a marked reduction of CD248-enriched secretory-reticular fibroblasts in diabetic wounds. We identify insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) as a key regulator of CD248 expression through the Akt/mTOR signaling pathway and the Sp1 transcription factor. Overexpression of CD248 enhances fibroblast motility, elucidating the underrepresentation of CD248-enriched fibroblasts in diabetic wounds. Immunohistochemical staining of diabetic wound samples further confirm low SP1 expression and fewer CD248-positive secretory-reticular fibroblasts. Further investigation reveals that elevated tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) levels in diabetic environment promotes IGF-1 resistance, and inhibiting IGF-1-induced CD248 expression. In summary, our findings underscore the critical role of the IGF1-SP1-CD248 axis in activating reticular fibroblasts during wound-healing processes. Targeting this axis in fibroblasts could help develop a therapeutic regimen for diabetic ulcers.

The clear juice fermentation technique for white wines suggests that white grape seeds, rich in flavan-3-ols and proanthocyanidins, are not effectively utilized in the winemaking process. This study incorporated 'Gewürztraminer' grape seeds into 'Cabernet Sauvignon' must before cold soak to investigate how the resultant red wines' phenolic compound profiles, color, and astringency were affected. The results showed that adding seeds primarily inhibited the leaching of flavan-3-ols from both skins and seeds. A significant increase in the levels of flavan-3-ols, tannins, and phenolic acids, as well as direct and aldehyde-bridged flavan-3-ol-anthocyanin polymers, were observed in the wines with additional seeds. This led to the improvement in the wine' red hue and its resistance to SO2 bleaching. Furthermore, the wine added with seeds exhibited stronger astringency compared to those without. The findings provide a promising winemaking strategy to improve color stability and intensify the astringency of red wines through the utilization of grape seeds.

This study analyzed the dissolved organic matter (DOM) released by adsorbent during wastewater treatment. It was found that the adsorption method resulted in an organic removal efficiency of over 97 % for coal-to-olefin (CTO) wastewater, with the lowest value of 15.7 mg/L. The Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) detected 4111 DOM in the wastewater, 4052 remaining DOM after first-stage anthracite (ANC) adsorption, and 1013 after second-stage macroporous adsorption resin (MAR). The removal degree of lipids in wastewater was the highest, followed by aliphatic/amino-acid/mini-peptides and lignin. During the adsorption process, the proportion of halogenated compounds (HCs) declined from 59.86 % to 38.63 % and 21.67 %. Additionally, freshly produced 2035 and 311 DOMs were found in the adsorption effluent of ANC and MAR, respectively, with HCs accounting for 34.71 % and 67.96 %. Upon flowing ultra-pure water through ANC and MAR, the effluent dissolved organic carbon (DOC) ranges were 1.118-3.574 mg/L and 1.014-2.557 mg/L, respectively. There were 159 and 131 species of DOM detected, respectively, with HCs content of 59.06 % and 45.02 %. Comparative experiments revealed the complex components of the wastewater promoting the release of organic matter on the adsorbent surface that further reacted to generate organic matter. However, fewer substances were released by the adsorbent.

Given the critical role of miRNAs in regulating gene expression and their potential as biomarkers for various diseases, accurate and sensitive miRNA detection is essential for early diagnosis and monitoring of conditions such as cancer. In this study, we introduce a dimeric molecular beacon (Di-MB) based isothermal strand displacement amplification (ISDA) system (Di-MB-ISDA) for enhanced miRNA detection. The Di-MB system is composed of two monomeric MBs (Mono-MBs) connected by a double-stranded DNA linker with single-stranded sequences in the middle, facilitating binding with the flexible arms of the Mono-MBs. This design forms a compact, high-density structure, significantly improving biostability against nuclease degradation. In the absence of target miRNA, the Di-MB maintains its stable structure. When target miRNA is present, it binds to the stem-loop regions, causing the hairpin structure to unfold and expose the stem sequences. These sequences serve as templates for the built-in primers, triggering DNA replication through an intramolecular recognition mechanism. This spatial confinement effect accelerates the strand displacement reaction, allowing the target miRNA to initiate additional reaction cycles and amplify the detection signal. The Di-MB-ISDA system addresses key challenges such as poor biostability and limited sensitivity seen in traditional methods. By enhancing biostability and optimizing reaction conditions, this system demonstrates robust performance for miRNA detection with a detection limit of 100 pM. The findings highlight the potential of Di-MB-ISDA for sensitive and accurate miRNA analysis, paving the way for its application in biomedical study and disease diagnosis in complex biological samples.

Tumor endothelial marker 1 (TEM1), an activated mesenchymal cell marker, is implicated in tissue remodeling and repair. Herein, we investigated the role and therapeutic implications of TEM1 in abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), a potentially life-threatening aortic disease characterized by vascular inflammation and matrix turnover. Characterization of human AAA revealed increased TEM1 expression derived mainly from medial vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) and adventitial fibroblasts. Bioinformatics analysis demonstrated the association between TEM1-expressing VSMCs and fibroblasts and collagen gene expression. Consistently, collagen content and TEM1 expressed by VSMCs and fibroblasts were increased during CaCl2-induced AAA formation in mice. TEM1 silencing in VSMCs and fibroblasts inhibited transforming growth factor-ß1-induced phenotypic change, SMAD2 phosphorylation, and COL1A1 gene expression. Also, Tem1 deficiency reduced collagen synthesis and exacerbated CaCl2-induced AAA formation in mice without disturbing elastin destruction and inflammatory responses. In contrast, rTEM1 promoted phenotypic change and COL1A1 gene expression through SMAD2 phosphorylation in VSMCs and fibroblasts. Treatment with rTEM1 enhanced collagen synthesis, attenuated elastin fragmentation, and inhibited CaCl2-induced and angiotensin II-infused AAA formation. In summary, TEM1 in resident stromal cells regulates collagen synthesis to counteract aortic wall failure during AAA formation. Matrix integrity restored by rTEM1 treatment may hold therapeutic potential against AAA.

We present a novel approach for measuring the differential static scalar polarizability of a target ion utilizing a "polarizability scale" scheme with a reference ion co-trapped in a linear Paul trap. The differential static scalar polarizability of the target ion can be precisely extracted by measuring the ratio of the ac Stark shifts induced by an add-on infrared laser shed on both ions. This method circumvents the need for the calibration of the intensity of the add-on laser, which is usually the bottleneck for measurements of the polarizability of trapped ions. As a demonstration, ^{27}Al^{+} (the target ion) and ^{40}Ca^{+} (the reference ion) are used in this work, with an add-on laser at 1068 nm injected into the ion trap along the trap axis. The differential static scalar polarizability of ^{27}Al^{+} is extracted to be 0.416(14) a.u. by measuring the ratio of the ac Stark shifts of both ions. Compared to the most recent result [Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 033201 (2019)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.123.033201], the relative uncertainty of the differential static scalar polarizability of ^{27}Al^{+} is reduced by approximately a factor of 4, to 3.4%. This improvement is expected to be further enhanced by using an add-on laser with a longer wavelength.

Meningitis induced by Pasteurella multocida has been substantially described in clinical practice in both human and veterinary medicine, but the underlying mechanisms have not been previously reported. In this study, we investigated the influence of P. multocida infection on the permeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) using different models. Our in vivo tests in a mouse model and in vitro tests using human brain microvascular endothelial cell (hBMEC) model showed that P. multocida infection increased murine BBB permeability in mice and hBMEC monolayer permeability. Furthermore, we observed that P. multocida infection resulted in decreased expression of tight junctions (ZO1, claudin-5, occludin) and adherens junctions (E-cadherin) between neighboring hBMECs. Subsequent experiments revealed that P. multocida infection promoted the activation of hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α)/vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) signaling and NF-κB signaling, and suppressed the HIF-1α/VEGFA significantly remitted the decrease in ZO1/E-cadherin induced by P. multocida infection (P < 0.001). NF-κB signaling was found to contribute to the production of chemokines such as TNF-1α, IL-ß, and IL-6. Additionally, transmission electron microscopy revealed that paracellular migration might be the strategy employed by P. multocida to cross the BBB. This study provides the first evidence of the migration strategy used by P. multocida to traverse the mammalian BBB. The data presented herein will contribute to a better understanding of the pathogenesis of the zoonotic pathogen P. multocida.

The fermentation process has a significant impact on the aromatic profile of wines, particularly in relation to the difference in fermentation matrix caused by grape varieties. This study investigates the leaching and evolution patterns of aroma compounds in Vitis vinifera L. Marselan and Merlot during an industrial-scale vinification process, including the stages of cold soak, alcohol fermentation, malolactic fermentation, and one-year bottle storage. The emphasis is on the differences between the two varieties. The results indicated that most alcohols were rapidly leached during the cold soak stage. Certain C6 alcohols, terpenes, and norisoprenoids showed faster leaching rates in 'Marselan', compared to 'Merlot'. Some branched chain fatty-acid esters, such as ethyl 3-methylbutyrate, ethyl 2-methylbutyrate, and ethyl lactate, consistently increased during the fermentation and bottling stages, with faster accumulation observed in 'Marselan'. The study combines the Orthogonal Partial Least Squares-Discriminant Analysis (OPLS-DA) model based on odor activity values to elucidate the accumulation of these ethyl esters during bottle storage, compensating for the reduction in fruity aroma resulting from decreased levels of (E)-ß-damascenone. The 'Marselan' wine exhibited a more pronounced floral aroma due to its higher level of linalool, compared to the 'Merlot' wine. The study unveils the distinctive variation patterns of aroma compounds from grapes to wine across grape varieties. This provides a theoretical framework for the precise regulation of wine aroma and flavor, and holds significant production value.

Internet gaming disorder (IGD) prompts inquiry into how feedback from prior gaming rounds influences subsequent risk-taking behavior and potential neural mechanisms. Forty-two participants, including 15 with IGD and 27 health controls (HCs), underwent a sequential risk-taking task. Hierarchy Bayesian modeling was adopted to measure risky propensity, behavioral consistence, and affection by emotion ratings from last trial. Concurrent electroencephalogram and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (EEG-fNIRS) recordings were performed to demonstrate when, where and how the previous-round feedback affects the decision making to the next round. We discovered that the IGD illustrated heightened risk-taking propensity as compared to the HCs, indicating by the computational modeling (p = 0.028). EEG results also showed significant time window differences in univariate and multivariate pattern analysis between the IGD and HCs after the loss of the game. Further, reduced brain activation in the prefrontal cortex during the task was detected in IGD as compared to that of the control group. The findings underscore the importance of understanding the aberrant decision-making processes in IGD and suggest potential implications for future interventions and treatments aimed at addressing this behavioral addiction.

Interaction between viruses and bacteria during the development of infectious diseases is a complex question that requires continuous study. In this study, we explored the interactions between pseudorabies virus (PRV) and Pasteurella multocida (PM), which are recognized as the primary and secondary agents of porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC), respectively. In vivo tests using mouse models demonstrated that intranasal inoculation with PRV at a sublethal dose induced disruption of murine respiratory barrier and promoted the invasion and damages caused by PM through respiratory infection. Inoculation with PRV also disrupted the barrier function of murine and porcine respiratory epithelial cells, and accelerated the adherence and invasion of PM to the cells. In mechanism, PRV infection resulted in decreased expression of tight junction proteins (ZO-1, occludin) and adherens junction proteins (ß-catenin, E-cadherin) between neighboring respiratory epithelial cells. Additionally, PRV inoculation at an early stage downregulated multiple biological processes contributing to epithelial adhesion and barrier functions while upregulating signals beneficial for respiratory barrier disruption (e.g., the HIF-1α signaling). Furthermore, PRV infection also stimulated the upregulation of cellular receptors (CAM5, ICAM2, ACAN, and DSCAM) that promote bacterial adherence. The data presented in this study provide insights into the understanding of virus-bacteria interactions in PRDC and may also contribute to understanding the mechanisms of secondary infections caused by different respiratory viruses (e.g., influenza virus and SARS-CoV-2) in both medical and veterinary medicine. IMPORTANCE: Co-infections caused by viral and bacterial agents are common in both medical and veterinary medicine, but the related mechanisms are not fully understood. This study investigated the interactions between the zoonotic pathogens PRV and PM during the development of respiratory infections in both cell and mouse models, and reported the possible mechanisms which included: (i) the primary infection of PRV may induce the disruption and/or damage of mammal respiratory barrier, thereby contributing to the invasion of PM; (ii) PRV infection at early stage accelerates the transcription and/or expression of several cellular receptors that are beneficial for bacterial adherence. This study may shed a light on understanding the mechanisms on the secondary infection of PM promoted by different respiratory viruses (e.g., influenza virus and SARS-CoV-2) in both medical and veterinary medicine.

PURPOSE: To investigate the efficacy of an intravesical instillation of hyaluronic acid (HA) combined with epidermal growth factor (EGF) for the treatment of interstitial cystitis (IC) using a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced IC animal model. METHODS: A total of 24 female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized to 4 groups: sham control, IC, HA, and treatment (HA/ EGF) groups. A polyethylene-50 tube was placed inside the bladder of each animal. IC was induced by twice-weekly instillations of LPS for 3 weeks, which resulted in chronic injury of the urothelium. Animals in the sham control group only received saline instillation. Treatment solutions of HA and HA/EGF were given on days 0, 7, and 14 after IC induction (400 µL of HA in a concentration of 0.4 mg/0.5 mL and 400 µL of NewEpi, a commercialized HA/EGF mixture containing 2 µg of EGF and 0.4 mg of sodium hyaluronate). Animals were sacrificed on day 21 for further examinations. RESULTS: The HA/EGF group showed visible improvement in hematuria with a significant reduction of red blood cells in the urine compared to the HA group. Histological examination revealed that HA/EGF treatment reversed the abnormalities developed in IC, including infiltration of inflammatory cells, irregular re-epithelialization, and fibrotic tissue. Moreover, HA/ EGF significantly reduced the levels of proinflammation cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin [IL]-6, and IL-1ß) and substantially lowered the elevated oxidative stress biomarker malondialdehyde, yet restored the levels of antioxidant enzymes glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase, with superior results than HA treatment. Cystometry studies indicated that HA/EGF significantly prolonged intercontraction interval and increased micturition volume. CONCLUSION: HA/EGF has been demonstrated as a more effective treatment for enhancing the urothelium lining and reducing inflammatory changes to alleviate clinical symptoms associated with IC in rats, compared to HA alone.

RESUMEN

Five undescribed monoterpene-chalcone conjugates (1-5), one undescribed hypothetical precursor of diarylheptanoid (6), two undescribed diarylheptanoids (7-8), and fourteen known compounds (9-22) were isolated from the seeds of Alpinia katsumadai. Their structures were elucidated through the interpretation of HRESIMS, NMR, ECD, and X-ray diffraction data. MTT assays on human cancer cell lines (HepG2, A549, SGC7901, and SW480) revealed that compounds 3-8, 11, and 13 exhibited broad-spectrum antiproliferative activities with IC50 values ranging from 3.59 to 21.78 µM. B cell lymphoma 2 was predicted as the target of sumadain C (11) by network pharmacology and verified by homogeneous time-resolved fluorescence assay and molecular docking.

BACKGROUND: The clinical relevance of BRAF-V600E alleles in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and the prognostic impact of the mutants in cell-free (cf) and PBMC DNAs of Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) have not been fully clarified in pediatric LCH. METHODS: We retrospectively determined the levels of BRAF-V600E mutation in paired plasma and PBMC samples at the time of diagnosis of LCH. Subsequently, we performed a separate or combined analysis of the clinical and prognostic impact of the mutants. RESULTS: We assessed BRAF-V600E mutation in peripheral blood from 94 patients of childhood LCH. Our data showed that cfBRAF-V600E was related to young age, multiple-system (MS) disease, involvements of organs with high risk, increased risk of relapse, and worse progression-free survival (PFS) of patients. We also observed that the presence of BRAF-V600E in PBMCs at baseline was significantly associated with MS LCH with risk organ involvement, younger age, and disease progression or relapse. The coexisting of plasma(+)/PBMC(+) identified 36.2% of the patients with the worst outcome, and the hazard ratio was more significant than either of the two alone or neither, indicating that combined analysis of the mutation in plasma and PBMCs was more accurate to predict relapse than evaluation of either one. CONCLUSIONS: Concurrent assessment of BRAF-V600E mutation in plasma and PBMCs significantly impacted the prognosis of children with LCH. Further prospective studies with larger cohorts need to validate the results of this study.

OBJECTIVE: Our study aims to examine the independent and combined associations of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations and physical activity (PA) status with phenotypic age (PhenoAge). METHOD: The analysis included 18,738 participants from the NHANES 2007-2010 & 2015-2018. Phenotypic Age Acceleration (PhenoAgeAccel) was calculated as the residuals from regressing PhenoAge on chronological age. Weighted multivariable logistic regression models were used to analysis the relationship between 25(OH)D and PA with PhenoAgeAccel. Population attributable fraction (PAF) was used to estimate the proportion of PhenoAgeAccel which could be avoided if exposure were eliminated. RESULTS: The multivariate-adjusted OR (95%CI) for PhenoAgeAccel with high 25(OH)D and adequate PA were 0.657 (0.549,0.787) (p < 0.001) for all, 0.663 (0.538,0.818) (p < 0.001) for participants whose age ≤65years old. Furthermore, there was multiplicative interaction between 25(OH)D and PA in age ≤65 years old group (0.729 (0.542,0.979), p = 0.036). High 25(OH)D level and adequate PA reduced the risk of PhenoAgeAccel by 14.3 % and 14.2 %, respectively. Notably, 30.7 % decrease was attributable to both high 25(OH)D level and engaging in adequate PA concurrently. Combining 25(OH)D above 80.4 nmol/l with PA decreased PhenoAge by 1.291 years (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Higher 25(OH)D level was associated with lower risk of biological ageing. Combining 25(OH)D and PA demonstrated enhanced protective effects, especially in middle or young adults. These findings underscore the importance of outdoor PA in slowing down the aging process.

BACKGROUND: Paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia (PKD) is the most prevalent kind type of paroxysmal Dyskinesia, characterized by recurrent and transient episodes of involuntary movements. Most PKD cases were attributed to the proline-rich transmembrane protein 2 (PRRT2) gene, in which the c.649 region is a hotspot for known mutations. Even though some patients with PKD have been genetically diagnosed using whole-exome sequencing (WES) and Sanger sequencing, there are still cases of missed diagnoses due to the limitations of sequencing technology and analytic methods on throughput. METHODS: Patients meeting the diagnosis criteria of PKD with negative results of PRRT2-Sanger sequencing and WES were included in this study. Mutation screening and targeted high-throughput sequencing were performed to analyze and verify the sequencing results of the potential mutations. RESULTS: Six patients with PKD with high mutation ratios of c.649dupC were screened using our targeted high-throughput sequencing from 26 PKD patients with negative results of PRRT2-Sanger sequencing and WES (frequency = 23.1%), which compensated for the comparatively shallow sequencing depth and statistical flaws in this region. Compared with the local normal population and other patients with PKD, the mutation ratios of c.649dupC of these six patients with PKD were much higher and also had truncated protein structures and differentially altered mRNA expression. CONCLUSION: Based on the above studies, we emphasize the routine targeted high-throughput sequencing of the c.649 site in the PRRT2 gene in so-called genetic-testing-negative patients with PKD, and manually calculate the deletion and duplication mutations depth and ratios to lower the rate of clinical misdiagnosis.

Our brain constantly processes multisensory inputs to make decisions and guide behaviors, but how goal-relevant processes are influenced by irrelevant information is unclear. Here, we investigated the effects of intermodal and intramodal task-irrelevant information on visual and auditory categorical decision-making. In both visual and auditory tasks, we manipulated the modality of irrelevant inputs (visual vs. auditory vs. none) and used linear discrimination analysis of EEG and hierarchical drift-diffusion modeling (HDDM) to identify when and how task-irrelevant information affected decision-relevant processing. The results revealed modality-specific impacts of irrelevant inputs on visual and auditory categorical decision-making. The distinct effects on the visual task were shown on the neural components, with auditory distractors amplifying the sensory processing whereas visual distractors amplifying the post-sensory process. Conversely, the distinct effects on the auditory task were shown in behavioral performance and underlying cognitive processes. Visual distractors facilitate behavioral performance and affect both stages, but auditory distractors interfere with behavioral performance and impact on the sensory processing rather than the post-sensory decision stage. Overall, these findings suggested that auditory distractors affect the sensory processing stage of both tasks while visual distractors affect the post-sensory decision stage of visual categorical decision-making and both stages of auditory categorical decision-making. This study provides insights into how humans process information from multiple sensory modalities during decision-making by leveraging modality-specific impacts.

Purpose: Retinal and optic nerve diseases have become the primary cause of irreversible vision loss and blindness. However, there is still a lack of thorough evaluation regarding their prevalence in China. Methods: This artificial intelligence-based national screening study applied a previously developed deep learning algorithm, named the Retinal Artificial Intelligence Diagnosis System (RAIDS). De-identified personal medical records from January 2019 to December 2021 were extracted from 65 examination centers in 19 provinces of China. Crude prevalence and age-sex-adjusted prevalence were calculated by mapping to the standard population in the seventh national census. Results: In 2021, adjusted referral possible glaucoma (63.29, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 57.12-68.90 cases per 1000), epiretinal macular membrane (21.84, 95% CI = 15.64-29.22), age-related macular degeneration (13.93, 95% CI = 11.09-17.17), and diabetic retinopathy (11.33, 95% CI = 8.89-13.77) ranked the highest among 10 diseases. Female participants had significantly higher adjusted prevalence of pathologic myopia, yet a lower adjusted prevalence of diabetic retinopathy, referral possible glaucoma, and hypertensive retinopathy than male participants. From 2019 to 2021, the adjusted prevalence of retinal vein occlusion (0.99, 95% CI = 0.73-1.26 to 1.88, 95% CI = 1.42-2.44), macular hole (0.59, 95% CI = 0.41-0.82 to 1.12, 95% CI = 0.76-1.51), and hypertensive retinopathy (0.53, 95% CI = 0.40-0.67 to 0.77, 95% CI = 0.60-0.95) significantly increased. The prevalence of diabetic retinopathy in participants under 50 years old significant increased. Conclusions: Retinal and optic nerve diseases are an important public health concern in China. Further well-conceived epidemiological studies are required to validate the observed increased prevalence of diabetic retinopathy, hypertensive retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, and macular hole nationwide. Translational Relevance: This artificial intelligence system can be a potential tool to monitor the prevalence of major retinal and optic nerve diseases over a wide geographic area.
