RESUMEN

Intratumoral hypoxia not only promotes angiogenesis and invasiveness of cancer cells, but also creates an immunosuppressive microenvironment that facilitates tumor progression. However, the mechanisms by which hypoxic tumor cells disseminate immunosuppressive signals remain unclear. In this study, we demonstrate that a hypoxia-induced long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) HIF1A Antisense RNA 2 (HIF1A-AS2) is upregulated in both hypoxic tumor cells and hypoxic tumor-derived exosomes (TEXs) in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha 1 (HIF-1α) was found to directly bind to the regulatory region of HIF1A-AS2 to enhance its expression. HIF1A-AS2 reduced the protein stability of major histocompatibility complex class I (MHC-I) by promoting the interaction between the autophagy cargo receptor Neighbor of BRCA1 gene 1 protein (NBR1) and MHC-I, thereby increasing the autophagic degradation of MHC-I. In HNSCC samples, the expression of HIF1A-AS2 was found to correlate with hypoxic signatures and advanced clinical stages. Patients with high HIF-1α and low HLA-ABC expression showed reduced infiltration of CD8+ T cells. These findings define a mechanism of hypoxia-mediated immune evasion in HNSCC through downregulation of antigen-presenting machinery via intracellular or externalized hypoxia-induced lncRNA.

Dendrobium officinale Kimura & Migo (D. officinale) has been widely used as Chinese medicine and functional food. In present study, the structural characteristics of anthocyanins in D. officinale were investigated by ultra-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detector (UPLC-DAD) and ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time of flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS). Totally, 14 anthocyanins were detected and identified, and 13 of them were first reported in D. officinale. Results showed that the vast majority of anthocyanins had multi-glycosylated cyanidin core, with variable acylation pattern mainly comprising phenolic acids. The composition and content of anthocyanins in D. officinale stems with different cultivation modes and years have been compared. The anthocyanins showed potent antioxidant activity in terms of radicals scavenging capacity and reducing power, as well as superior α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. The results provided a complete profile of anthocyanins in D. officinale and laid a foundation for further utilizing them as functional foods.

Nitroalkanes serve as essential intermediates in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and functional materials. To date, nitroalkanes are mainly prepared from homogeneous catalysts such as noble transition metal catalysts with poor recyclability. Herein, we propose a metal-organic framework-frustrated Lewis pair (MOF-FLP) heterogeneous catalyst for selectively reducing nitroolefins to nitroalkanes under moderate reaction conditions. MOF enrichment effect can significantly improve the catalytic efficiency compared to homogeneous FLP catalysts. Benefiting from the strong interaction between FLP and MOF, the MOF-FLP catalyst exhibits outstanding recyclability. This work not only provides a convenient route for nitroalkane synthesis but also showcases the potential of porous heterogeneous FLP catalysts, offering inspiration for future catalytic design strategies.

Microbial synthesis is a desirable approach to produce indirubin but suffers from low synthetic efficiency. Insufficient supply of reduced flavins is one major factor limiting synthetic efficiency. To address this, a novel flavin reductase, MoxB, was discovered through screening of the metagenomic library. MoxB showed a strong preference for NADH over NADPH as the electron source for FMN/FAD reduction and exhibited the highest activity at pH 8.0 and 30°C. It displayed remarkable thermostability by maintaining 80% of full activity after incubation at 60°C for 1 h. Furthermore, MoxB showed great organic solvent tolerance and its activity could be significantly increased by bivalent metal ions. In addition, heterologous expression of the moxB gene in the indirubin-producing E. coli significantly improved indirubin production up to 15.12-fold. This discovery expands the understanding of flavin reductases and provides a promising catalytic tool for microbial indirubin production.IMPORTANCEMuch effort has been exerted to produce indirubin using engineered Escherichia coli, but high-level production has not been achieved so far. Insufficient supply of reduced flavins is one key factor limiting the catalytic efficiency. However, the flavin reductases involved in indirubin biosynthesis have not been hitherto reported. Discovery of the novel flavin reductase MoxB provides a useful tool for enhancing indirubin production by E. coli. Overexpression of MoxB in indirubin-producing E. coli increased indirubin production by 15.12-fold in comparison to the control strain. Our results document the function of flavin reductase that reduces flavins during indirubin biosynthesis and provide an important foundation for using the flavin reductases to improve indirubin production by engineered microorganisms.

A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the relative effectiveness of different dietary macronutrient patterns on changes in resting energy expenditure (REE) in relation to weight loss, categorized as minimal (<5%) and moderate to high (>5%). Changes in REE were assessed using a DerSimonian and Laird random-effects meta-analysis. A diet lower in carbohydrates (CHO) or higher in fat and protein was associated with smaller reductions in REE, with these trends being more pronounced among participants who experienced moderate to high weight loss. Adjusted meta-regression analysis indicated that, within the participants who experienced moderate to high weight loss, each 1% increase in CHO intake was associated with a reduction of 2.30 kcal/day in REE (95% CI: -4.11 to -0.47, p = 0.013). In contrast, a 1% increase in protein and fat intake was correlated with an increase in REE by 3.00 (95% confidence interval [CI] [1.02, 5.07], p = 0.003) and 0.5 (95% CI [-2.43, 3.41], p = 0.740) kcal/day, respectively. No significant associations were found among participants who experienced minimal weight loss. These findings indicate that, under a caloric deficit, the impact of dietary macronutrient composition on REE may vary depending on the degree of weight loss and individual metabolic responses.

Long interspersed nuclear element-1 (LINE-1) methylation serves as an indicator of global DNA methylation. This study explored the correlation between LINE-1 methylation and chronic kidney disease (CKD). We also evaluated whether LINE-1 methylation could modify the association between CKD and metal exposure. A total of 213 patients with clinically defined CKD, without hemodialysis and 416 age and sex matched controls were recruited. Levels of LINE-1 methylation, total urinary arsenic, blood lead, blood cadmium, and plasma selenium were assessed. The results reveal a positive association between LINE-1 methylation and CKD, with an odds ratio (OR) of 5.30 (95% confidence interval: 2.81 to 9.99). Total urinary arsenic and blood cadmium concentrations were positively related with LINE-1 methylation. This study was the first to observe that low plasma selenium, high blood cadmium, and high blood lead levels significantly and additively interact with increased LINE-1 methylation to increase the OR of CKD. Additionally, high LINE-1 methylation interacted multiplicatively with low plasma selenium to increase the OR of CKD (p < 0.001). This study highlighted the significant association between LINE-1 hypermethylation and CKD. Furthermore, the results demonstrate that LINE-1 methylation can interact with high blood cadmium or low plasma selenium to affect CKD risk.

BACKGROUND: Striae distensae (SD) are cutaneous lesions that are caused by hormones or mechanical stress leading to rapid expansion of skin. Therefore, SD are now a cosmetic concern. However, improving SD is notoriously difficult. Among different treatments, energy-based devices (EBDs) are much more effective and controllable. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review was to determine the most effective type of EBD for improving the appearance of striae. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The population comprised patients suffering from striae. Different types of EBDs used to improve striae were compared. The primary outcome of the reduction in the width of striae was evaluated. A random-effects model was performed. The means and standard deviations were extracted. RESULTS: Eighteen randomized controlled trials were included. The network meta-analysis revealed that after a comparison among the 4 types of EBDs, no significant differences were observed in the reduction of striae width. CONCLUSION: Radiofrequency, ablative lasers, nonablative lasers, and intense pulsed light are all effective treatments for reducing the striae width. None of them was superior to the others. However, radiofrequency and ablative lasers may have the highest chance of improving the appearance of striae.

Objective: To study the current status of hemophilia B (HB) patients in the central and western regions of China. Methods: This cross-sectional, multicenter study was conducted in seven provinces in the central and western regions of China from April 2019 to June 2023. Samples were collected for the factor IX activity, inhibitor screen, and gene mutation. Furthermore, the status of six index joints and quality of life (QoL) were assessed. Results: A total of 185 HB patients (mild 15, moderate 75, and severe 95) with a median age of 12.17 years were enrolled. 30.3% (56/185) of patients had a family history of HB. 34.6% (64/185) of HB patients had diagnostic delay and 38.5% (69/179) experienced treatment delay. The incidence of inhibitors was 6.1% (11/179). We identified 123 genetic variants in this study, with missense mutations being the most common. 84.0% (89/106) of HB mothers were genetically identified as carriers, with 27.7% (13/47) of carriers having clotting factor levels less than 0.40 IU/ml. 71.4% (132/185) of HB patients had a history of joint hemorrhage, with a rate of target joint in these patients was 64.4% (85/132). Lower extremity joints were most often affected in patients. The Hemophilia Joint Health Score (HJHS) score was significantly positively correlated with the Hemophilia Early Arthropathy Detection with Ultrasound in China (HEAD-US-C) (r = 0.542, P < 0.001). Patients who received prevention treatment, inhibitor negative, without treatment delay, and without high-intensity replacement therapy showed a higher total score of the short form-36 health survey (SF-36). Conclusions: One-third of HB patients had delay in diagnosis and treatment, and the incidence of inhibitors was 6.1%. Target joints were present in nearly half of HB patients. Missense was the main mutation type. 84.0% of mothers of HB patients in this study were found to be carriers. HEAD-US-C and HJHS can complement each other in the evaluation of joint status and give a valid basis for early clinical management. Early detection and preventive treatment, as well as reducing high-intensity replacement therapy and inhibitor generation, can effectively improve the QoL of patients.

Silver nanoparticles supported on metal-organic framework (ZIF-67)-derived Co3O4 nanostructures (Ag NPs/Co3O4) were synthesized via a facile in situ reduction strategy. The resulting materials exhibited pH-switchable peroxidase/catalase-like catalytic activity. Ag NP doping greatly enhanced the catalytic activity of Ag NPs/Co3O4 towards 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidation and H2O2 decomposition which were 59 times (A652 of oxTMB) and 3 times (A240 of H2O2) higher than that of ZIF-67, respectively. Excitingly, thiophanate-methyl (TM) further enhanced the peroxidase-like activity of Ag NPs/Co3O4 nanozyme due to the formation of Ag(I) species in TM-Ag NPs/Co3O4 and generation of more radicals resulting from strong interaction between Ag NPs and TM. The TM-Ag NPs/Co3O4 nanozyme exhibited lower Km and higher Vmax values towards H2O2 when compared with Ag NPs/Co3O4 nanozyme. A simple, bioelement-free colorimetric TM detection method based on Ag NPs/Co3O4 nanozyme via analyte-enhanced sensing strategy was successfully established with high sensitivity and selectivity. Our study demonstrated that hybrid noble metal NPs/MOF-based nanozyme can be a class of promising artificial nanozyme in environmental and food safety applications.

T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL)/T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma (T-LBL) is an uncommon but highly aggressive hematological malignancy. It has high recurrence and mortality rates and is challenging to treat. This study conducted bioinformatics analyses, compared genetic expression profiles of healthy controls with patients having T-ALL/T-LBL, and verified the results through serological indicators. Data were acquired from the GSE48558 dataset from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO). T-ALL patients and normal T cells-related differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were investigated using the online analysis tool GEO2R in GEO, identifying 78 upregulated and 130 downregulated genes. Gene Ontology (GO) and protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analyses of the top 10 DEGs showed enrichment in pathways linked to abnormal mitotic cell cycles, chromosomal instability, dysfunction of inflammatory mediators, and functional defects in T-cells, natural killer (NK) cells, and immune checkpoints. The DEGs were then validated by examining blood indices in samples obtained from patients, comparing the T-ALL/T-LBL group with the control group. Significant differences were observed in the levels of various blood components between T-ALL and T-LBL patients. These components include neutrophils, lymphocyte percentage, hemoglobin (HGB), total protein, globulin, erythropoietin (EPO) levels, thrombin time (TT), D-dimer (DD), and C-reactive protein (CRP). Additionally, there were significant differences in peripheral blood leukocyte count, absolute lymphocyte count, creatinine, cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, folate, and thrombin times. The genes and pathways associated with T-LBL/T-ALL were identified, and peripheral blood HGB, EPO, TT, DD, and CRP were key molecular markers. This will assist the diagnosis of T-ALL/T-LBL, with applications for differential diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis.

Plant growth promoting microbe assisted phytoremediation is considered a more effective approach to rehabilitation than the single use of plants, but underlying mechanism is still unclear. In this study, we combined transcriptomic and physiological methods to explore the mechanism of plant growth promoting microbe Trichoderma citrinoviride HT-1 assisted phytoremediation of Cd contaminated water by Phragmites australis. The results show that the strain HT-1 significantly promoted P. australis growth, increased the photosynthetic rate, enhanced antioxidant enzyme activities. The chlorophyll content and the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) were increased by 83.78%, 23.17%, 47.60%, 97.14% and 12.23% on average, and decreased the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) by 31.10%. At the same time, strain HT-1 improved the absorption and transport of Cd in P. australis, and the removal rate of Cd was increased by 7.56% on average. Transcriptome analysis showed that strain HT-1 induced significant up-regulated the expression of genes related to oxidative phosphorylation and ribosome pathways, and these upregulated genes promoted P. australis remediation efficiency and resistance to Cd stress. Our results provide a mechanistic understanding of plant growth promoting microbe assisted phytoremediation under Cd stress.

BACKGROUND: Standard management for intrauterine lesions typically involves initial imaging followed by operative hysteroscopy for suspicious findings. However, the efficacy of routine outpatient hysteroscopy in women undergoing assisted reproductive technology (ART) remains uncertain due to a lack of decisive high-quality evidence. This study aimed to determine whether outpatient hysteroscopy is beneficial for infertile women who have unremarkable imaging results prior to undergoing ART. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following PRISMA guidelines, incorporating data up to May 31, 2023, from databases such as PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library. The primary outcome assessed was the live birth rate, with secondary outcomes including chemical pregnancy, clinical pregnancy rates, and miscarriage rates. Statistical analysis involved calculating risk ratios with 95% confidence intervals and assessing heterogeneity with the I2 statistic. RESULTS: The analysis included ten randomized control trials. Receiving outpatient hysteroscopy before undergoing ART was associated with increased live birth (RR 1.22, 95% CI 1.03-1.45, I2 61%) and clinical pregnancy rate (RR 1.27 95% CI 1.10-1.47, I2 53%). Miscarriage rates did not differ significantly (RR 1.25, CI 0.90-1.76, I2 50%). Subgroup analyses did not show a significant difference in clinical pregnancy rates when comparing normal versus abnormal hysteroscopic findings (RR 1.01, CI 0.78-1.32, I2 38%). We analyzed data using both intention-to-treat and per-protocol approaches, and our findings were consistent across both analytical methods. CONCLUSIONS: Office hysteroscopy may enhance live birth and clinical pregnancy rates in infertile women undergoing ART, even when previous imaging studies show no apparent intrauterine lesions. Treating lesions not detected by imaging may improve ART outcomes. The most commonly missed lesions are endometrial polyps, submucosal fibroids and endometritis, which are all known to affect ART success rates. The findings suggested that hysteroscopy, given its diagnostic accuracy and patient tolerability, should be considered in the management of infertility. This study investigated the effect of electron acceptor (EA) distribution (acetate to butyrate ratio) on the carbon chain elongation (CCE) process. The results showed that the higher content of butyrate in the initial material led to the higher production of caproate. The maximum production of caproate was 3.74 ± 0.30 g·L-1, which was obtained when only butyrate was added as EA. Little caproate but much butyrate was produced where only acetate was added as EA. This indicated that CCE bacteria preferentially selected acetate as the EA to produce butyrate, and butyrate could be selected as EA to produce caproate only when the acetate content was much lower than butyrate. Unclassified_f_Dysgonomonadaceae, Massilibacterium, and Seramator were the predominant bacteria. Functional enzyme analysis showed that high butyrate content strengthened the fatty acid biosynthesis pathway and reverse ß-oxidization pathway. The findings showed the importance of butyrate in CCE for caproate production.

Long-term continuous cropping of facility soils could influence soil properties; however, the differences in soil properties among different continuous cropping years are still not well understood. The objective of this study was to explore the effects of continuous cropping years of tomato on the physical and chemical properties and biological characteristics of facility soil. Conventional analysis, high-throughput sequencing, and other methods were used to examine the soil physicochemical properties, soil microbial community diversity, and enzyme activities in facility soil after continuous tomato cropping for 1-3 years, 5-7 years, and more than 10 years. As the continuous tomato cropping years increased, soil bulk density and pH decreased; soil maximal water holding capacity increased; and organic matter, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus accumulated. As continuous cropping years increased, the total salt and EC value decreased with continuous cropping for 5-7 years and increased from 5-7 years to more than 10 years continuous cropping and showed a trend of secondary soil salinization. There was a significant increase in alkaline phosphatase for 1-3 years to 5-7 years continuous tomato cropping. There were significant differences in fungal community abundance among different cropping years. The Simpson index and Shannon index of fungi showed a trend of increasing first and then decreasing with the extension of continuous cropping years and reached the maximum value at 5 years of continuous cropping. The Chao1 index decreased continuously following the cropping years. As continuous cropping years increased, Streptomyces became the dominant bacteria, and Aspergillus and Pseudaleuria became the dominant fungi. The key factors affected by continuous cropping years were available potassium and available nitrogen based on the redundancy analysis. The results of this study lay the foundation for future research on the influence of continuous cropping years on the health of facility soil.

The objective of this study was to explore the microbial diversity and community composition under saline soil and to screen the salt-tolerant microbial flora from salinization habitats. The soil from three different habitats(primary salinization, secondary salinization, and healthy soil) in Hebei Province were sampled. The convention method and high-throughput sequencing technology were used to examine the physicochemical properties and microorganism diversity. The soil chemical properties of the three habitats were significantly different. Compared with those of field soil, the soil OM, AP, AK, TS, and EC values of greenhouse soil and TS and EC values of coastal saline soil were significantly higher. However, other chemical indexes of coastal saline soil were significantly lower. The diversity index and abundance of soil bacteria in greenhouse soil were the highest, followed by those in field soil and coastal saline soil as the lowest. The diversity index and abundance of fungi in two saline habitats were significantly lower than that in field soil. The community structure of saline soil was analyzed at the phylum and genus levels. Chloroflexi and its genera and Ascomycota and its genera, such as Trichocladium and Fusarium, were the dominant microbial groups in saline soil. EC and TS were the main factors affecting microbial diversity and community composition. EC and TS were positively correlated with unclassified_A4b, unclassified_Chloroflexi, unclassified_α-Proteobacteria, Trichocladium, unclassified_Chaetomiaceae, Crassicarpon, Cephaliophora, and Sodiomyces. The results of this study lay the foundation for future research on screening microbial resources needed for saline soil remediation.

Colistin (COL), the last line of defense in clinical medicine, is an important therapeutic option against multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. In this context, the emergence of colistin-resistant (COL-R) bacteria mediated by broad-spectrum efflux pumps, mobile genetic elements, and biofilm formation poses a significant public health concern. In response to this challenge, a novel approach of combining COL with usnic acid (UA) has been proposed in this study. UA is a secondary metabolite derived from lichens and is well-known for its anti-inflammatory properties. This study aimed to investigate the synergistic effects of UA and COL against COL-R Enterobacteriaceae both in vitro and in vivo. The exceptional synergistic antibacterial activity exhibited by the combination of COL and UA was demonstrated by performing a comprehensive set of assays, including the checkerboard assay, time-dependent killing assay, and Live/Dead bacterial cell viability assay. Furthermore, crystal violet staining and scanning electron microscopy assays revealed the inhibitory effect of this combination on the biofilm formation. Mechanistically, the combination of UA and COL exacerbated cell membrane rupture, induced DNA damage, and generated a significant amount of reactive oxygen species, which ultimately resulted in bacterial cell death. In addition, erythrocyte hemolysis and cell viability tests confirmed the biocompatibility of the combination. The evaluation of the COL/UA combination in vivo using Galleria mellonella larvae and a mouse infection model showed a significant improvement in the survival rate of the infected larvae as well as a reduction in the bacterial load in the mouse thigh muscle. These findings, for the first time, provide strong evidence for the potential application of COL/UA as an effective alternative therapeutic option to combat infections caused by COL-R Enterobacteriaceae strains.

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 11 (SCA11) is a rare disease and the tau tubulin kinase 2 (TTBK2) gene was the causative gene. To date, only six SCA11 families have been reported. Here, we reported a Chinese SCA11 pedigree with cerebellar ataxia. Both patients in the family demonstrated typical clinical features of cerebellar ataxia and cerebellar atrophy on brain MRI. A novel heterozygous duplication mutation (c.1211_1217dupAGGAGAA) of the TTBK2 gene was identified in the proband using whole-exome sequencing (WES), which resulted in a frameshift mutation and formed a premature stop codon (p. N406Kfs*47). The mutation was detected in the proband's affected brother, and his unaffected mother, who with a lower percentage of the mutation and considered as an asymptomatic mutation carrier. Our study delineated the genotypic spectrum of SCA11.

Impaired wound healing and ulcer complications are major causes of morbidity in patients with diabetes. Impaired wound healing is associated with increased inflammation and poor angiogenesis in diabetes patients. Here, we demonstrate that topical administration of a secreted recombinant protein (Meteorin-like [Metrnl]) accelerates wound epithelialization and angiogenesis in mice. We observed a significant increase in Metrnl expression during physiological wound healing; however, its expression remained low during diabetic wound healing. Functionally, the recombinant protein Metrnl significantly accelerated wound closure in normal and diabetic mice models including db/db, high-fat diet/streptozotocin (HFD/STZ), and STZ mice. Mechanistically, keratinocytes secrete quantities of Metrnl to promote angiogenesis; increase endothelial cell proliferation, migration, and tube formation; and enhance macrophage polarization to the M2 type. Meanwhile, M2 macrophages secrete Metrnl to further stimulate angiogenesis. Moreover, the keratinocyte- and macrophage-produced cytokine Metrnl drives postinjury angiogenesis and reepithelialization through activation of AKT phosphorylation (S473) in a KIT receptor tyrosine kinase (c-Kit)-dependent manner. In conclusion, our study suggests that Metrnl has a biological effect in accelerating wound closure through c-Kit-dependent angiogenesis and epithelialization.

Multigene cotransformation has been widely used in the study of genetic improvement in crops and trees. However, little is known about the unintended effects and causes of multigene cotransformation in poplars. To gain insight into the unintended effects of T-DNA integration during multigene cotransformation in field stands, here, three lines (A1-A3) of Populus × euramericana cv. Neva (PEN) carrying Cry1Ac-Cry3A-BADH genes and three lines (B1-B3) of PEN carrying Cry1Ac-Cry3A-NTHK1 genes were used as research objects, with non-transgenic PEN as the control. Experimental stands were established at three common gardens in three locations and next generation sequencing (NGS) was used to identify the insertion sites of exogenous genes in six transgenic lines. We compared the growth data of the transgenic and control lines for four consecutive years. The results demonstrated that the tree height and diameter at breast height (DBH) of transgenic lines were significantly lower than those of the control, and the adaptability of transgenic lines in different locations varied significantly. The genotype and the experimental environment showed an interaction effect. A total of seven insertion sites were detected in the six transgenic lines, with B3 having a double-site insertion and the other lines having single copies. There are four insertion sites in the gene region and three insertion sites in the intergenic region. Analysis of the bases near the insertion sites showed that AT content was higher than the average chromosome content in four of the seven insertion sites within 1000 bp. Transcriptome analysis suggested that the differential expression of genes related to plant hormone transduction and lignin synthesis might be responsible for the slow development of plant height and DBH in transgenic lines. This study provides an integrated analysis of the unintended effects of transgenic poplar, which will benefit the safety assessment and reasonable application of genetically modified trees.

This systematic review and network meta-analysis investigated the clinical efficacy and safety of chemical agent injections in patients with varicose veins. PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases were searched for eligible studies where patients administered endovascular agents comprised an intervention group, and patients administered other interventions comprised the comparison group. The endovascular agents included foam and liquid form sclerotherapy or cyanoacrylate glue. The other interventions in this study included surgery, endovenous laser ablation (EVLA), radiofrequency ablation (RFA), and placebo. A network meta-analysis for treatment effectiveness was performed. In addition, we illustrated the P-score lines of success rate and complication rate sorted by the P-score. Our results showed that at all postprocedural time intervals, cyanoacrylate glue therapy exhibited a significantly higher success rate compared with foam and liquid sclerotherapy. According to the plot of P-score lines, cyanoacrylate glue had an overall tendency of higher success rate and lower complication rate compared with foam and liquid sclerotherapy. Comparing with the other invasive treatments, cyanoacrylate glue may be non-inferior and could be considered as an option for treating varicose veins. However, the clinical benefits and safety of endovascular agents for the treatment of varicose veins require further corroboration through randomized control trials.
