RESUMEN

Infective endocarditis (IE) is a life-threatening infection predominantly affecting the endocardium and heart valves, commonly seen in older patients and those with pre-existing cardiac conditions. Although rare in younger individuals with intact cardiac valves, certain structural heart diseases such as hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) can increase the risk. We present a unique case of a 39-year-old female with a known history of HOCM, a condition characterized by abnormally thickened cardiac muscle primarily affecting the left ventricle. This patient was diagnosed with group B streptococcus infective endocarditis. Notably, this case was complicated by septic emboli to the brain. This case underscores the significant risk of IE in patients with HOCM, a demographic usually less susceptible to IE. It underscores the importance of early recognition and aggressive management of IE, especially in patients with structural heart diseases.

RESUMEN

Three novel derivatives of (E)-N'-nitrobenzylidene-benzenesulfonohydrazide (NBBSH) were synthesized by a condensation method from nitrobenzaldehyde and benzenesulfonylhydrazine reactants in low to moderate yields, which crystallized in methanol, acetone, ethyl acetate, and ethanol. NBBSH derivatives were totally characterized using various spectroscopic techniques, such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR), and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (13C NMR) spectroscopy. The molecular structure of the NBBSH derivates was confirmed by the single crystal X-ray diffraction method and used for potential detection of a selective heavy metal ion, mercury (Hg2+), by a reliable I-V method. A thin coating of NBBSH derivatives was deposited on a glassy carbon electrode (surface area = 0.0316 cm2) with a binder (nafion) coating to modify a sensitive and selective Hg2+ sensor with a short response time in phosphate buffer. The modified cationic sensor exhibited enhanced chemical performances, such as higher sensitivity, linear dynamic range, limit of detection (LOD), reproducibility, and long-term stability toward Hg2+. The calibration curve was found to be linear over a wide range of Hg2+ concentrations (100.0 pM-100.0 mM). The sensitivity and LOD were considered to be ∼949.0 pA µM-1cm-2 and 10.0 ± 1.0 pM (S/N = 3), respectively. The sensor was applied to the selective measurement of Hg2+ in spiked water samples to give acceptable and satisfactory results.

RESUMEN

Ce2O3 nanoparticle decorated CNT nanocomposites (Ce2O3.CNT NCs) were prepared by a wet-chemical method in basic medium. The Ce2O3.CNT NCs were examined using FTIR, UV/Vis, Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), X-ray electron dispersive spectroscopy (XEDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). A selective 2-nitrophenol (2-NP) sensor was developed by fabricating a thin-layer of NCs onto a flat glassy carbon electrode (GCE, surface area = 0.0316 cm2). Higher sensitivity including linear dynamic range (LDR), long-term stability, and enhanced electrochemical performances towards 2-NP were achieved by a reliable current-voltage (I-V) method. The calibration curve was found linear (R2 = 0.9030) over a wide range of 2-NP concentration (100 pM ~ 100.0 mM). Limit of detection (LOD) and sensor sensitivity were calculated based on noise to signal ratio (~3N/S) as 60 ± 0.02 pM and 1.6×10-3 µAµM-1cm-2 respectively. The Ce2O3.CNT NCs synthesized by a wet-chemical process is an excellent way of establishing nanomaterial decorated carbon materials for chemical sensor development in favor of detecting hazardous compounds in health-care and environmental fields at broad-scales. Finally, the efficiency of the proposed chemical sensors can be applied and utilized in effectively for the selective detection of toxic 2-NP component in environmental real samples with acceptable and reasonable results.

RESUMEN

3-hydroxy-1-methylene-2,3,4,4-tetrahydroxynapthalene-2-carbaldehyde (1), 22,23-dihydroxy spinasterol (2) were isolated from petroleum ether extrct of the fruits of Luffa cylindrical. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic studies including IR and high field NMR analysis.Petroleum ether extract (i.e. crude extract) exhibited mild to moderate antimicrobial activity. This is the first report of isolation of compound of 1 – 2 from this species.
