RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Personalized radiofrequency (RF) ablation for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF), adapting the ablation index (AI) to local left atrial wall thickness (LAWT), proved to be highly efficient maintaining high arrhythmia-free survival rates. However, multicentre data are lacking. This multicentre, prospective, non-randomized study was conducted at 5 tertiary hospitals and sought to assess the safety, efficacy, and reproducibility of the LAWT-guided ablation for PAF. METHODS: Consecutive patients referred for first-time PAF were prospectively enrolled. The LAWT maps were obtained from preprocedural multidetector computed tomography and integrated into the navigation system. AI was titrated according to the local LAWT, and the ablation line was personalized to avoid the thickest regions while encircling the pulmonary veins (PVs). RESULTS: A total 109 patients (60.1 ± 9.4 years, 64.2% male) were enrolled. Median procedure time was 61.7 min (48.4-83.8), fluoroscopy time was 1.0 min (0.4-3.3), and RF time was 13.9 min (12.3-16.8). Median AI tailored to the local LAWT was 393 (374-412) for the anterior wall and 340 (315-378) for the posterior wall. Right and left PVs first-pass isolation was achieved in 89% and 91.7% of the patients, respectively. At 12-month follow-up, freedom from any atrial arrhythmia was 93.4% (95% CI 88.7-98.1), without differences across centres (P = 0.169). One patient experienced femoral artery pseudoaneurysm, with no other serious procedural-related complication. CONCLUSION: The Ablate-by-LAWT study proved that LAWT-guided PV isolation for PAF is safe, effective, and efficient in a multicentre setting. Twelve-month recurrence-free survival exceeded 90% (NCT04218604).

Purpose: Recreational and competitive slalom waterskiing is increasingly popular among individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCI), particularly for those with paraplegia using sit-skis. A key component of slalom skiing is the deep-water start (DWS), yet little is known about the physiological and physical demands of this activity when the athlete is seated. This study aims to fill this gap by focusing on the training requirements for a seated slalom athlete. Materials and methods: Focusing on a young male athlete with paraplegia, this case study evaluates the effectiveness and efficiency of traditional (TDWS) and alternative (ADWS) DWS techniques during seated slalom waterskiing sessions. It assesses internal training load (TL) through heart rate (HR) zones and session rating of perceived exertion (sRPE), alongside pre- and post-session handgrip strength measurements to gauge peripheral muscle fatigue. Results and conclusions: Performing the ADWS, achieving a full success rate, proved more effective but slightly more time-consuming than TDWS, which had limited success. HR during DWS maneuvers ranged from 63.2 to 81.3% of maximal HR, with most sessions occurring below the ventilatory threshold, thus perceived as hard effort. A moderate yet non-significant correlation was found between HR and sRPE-based TL. A significant reduction in handgrip strength post-session underscores the activity's demands. These insights illuminate the technical, physiological, and physical challenges in mastering DWS for seated slalom athletes with SCI, providing valuable guidance for the development of tailored training programs and techniques in this sport.

Cardiomyopathies (CMs), one of the main causes of sudden death among the young population, are a heterogeneous group of myocardial diseases, usually with a genetic cause. Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) has expanded the genes studied for CMs; however, the yield is still around 50%. The systematic study of Copy Number Variants (CNVs) could contribute to improving our diagnostic capacity. These alterations have already been described as responsible for cardiomyopathies in some cases; however, their impact has been rarely assessed. We analyzed the clinical significance of CNVs in cardiomyopathies by studying 11,647 affected patients, many more than those considered in previously published studies. We evaluated the yield of the systematic study of CNVs in a production context using NGS and a novel CNV detection software tool v2.0 that has demonstrated great efficacy, maximizing sensitivity and avoiding false positives. We obtained a CNV analysis yield of 0.8% that fluctuated depending on the type of cardiomyopathy studied (0.29% HCM, 1.41% DCM, 1.88% ARVC, 1.8% LVNC, 1.45% RCM), and we present the frequency of occurrence for 18 genes that agglutinate the 95 pathogenic/likely pathogenic CNVs detected. We conclude the importance of including in diagnostic tests a systematic study of these genetic alterations for the different cardiomyopathies.

ABSTRACT: This scoping review aimed to explore the characteristics and performance factors of competitive Para-cyclists. A systematic search for studies on competitive Para-cycling on WOS, PubMed, SPORTDiscus and Scopus was performed until December 2023. Five methodological phases were followed: (i) identifying the research question, (ii) identifying relevant studies, (iii) study selection, (iv) charting the data, and (v) collating, summarizing, and reporting the results. A systematic search across multiple databases was performed until March 2024. Five methodological phases were employed: identifying the research question, relevant studies, study selection, charting data, and summarizing results. A total of 36 relevant studies were selected. Three main research themes emerged: Sport performance (n = 15), Biomechanics (n = 12), and Physical and mental health (n = 9). Despite progress, gaps were identified, particularly in physiological response to exercise, fitness, and training. Biomechanics studies focused on prosthetic use and aerodynamics, mostly involving lower-limb amputees and simulated tandem competition. Injury risk in Para-cycling appeared comparable to able-bodied cycling, but comprehensive studies considering confounding variables are needed. Overall, while research on Para-cycling is growing, more studies with larger and diverse samples across all sport classes are essential to advance scientific understanding in this field.

INTRODUCTION: Spinal cord injuries (SCI) have physiological, emotional, and economic consequences in the lives of affected people. Resistance training (RT) is efficient in improving several physiological factors, quality of life, and body composition. Due to the scarce literature on the analysis of isolated RT, the objective of this systematic review is to evaluate the effects of RT without the association of other techniques, in aspects related to the quality of life and body composition of people with SCI. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: The research was carried out in databases such as Pubmed, Cochrane, and Web of Science using the terms ("Spinal cord injury") AND (("Resistance Training") OR ("Strength training")). Given the lack of evidence on the subject, no deadline was set for the study to be eligible for analysis. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS: The search for the articles was carried out in November of 2023 and returned 470 results, of which 315 remained after the elimination of duplicates, with 281 being excluded after title analysis. A total of 34 abstracts were analyzed and 29 studies were excluded, leaving 5 complete articles for thorough analysis. CONCLUSIONS: After analyzing the main results, we concluded that RT promotes significant improvements in body composition, pain, stress and depression symptoms, increased functionality, physical awareness, and quality of life.

The treatment of outflow tract ventricular arrhythmias (OTVA) through radiofrequency ablation requires the precise identification of the site of origin (SOO). Pinpointing the SOO enhances the likelihood of a successful procedure, reducing intervention times and recurrence rates. Current clinical methods to identify the SOO are based on qualitative analysis of pre-operative electrocardiograms (ECG), heavily relying on physician's expertise. Although computational models and machine learning (ML) approaches have been proposed to assist OTVA procedures, they either consume substantial time, lack interpretability or do not use clinical information. Here, we propose an alternative strategy for automatically predicting the ventricular origin of OTVA patients using ML. Our objective was to classify ventricular (left/right) origin in the outflow tracts (LVOT and RVOT, respectively), integrating ECG and clinical data from each patient. Extending beyond differentiating ventricle origin, we explored specific SOO characterization. Utilizing four databases, we also trained supervised learning models on the QRS complexes of the ECGs, clinical data, and their combinations. The best model achieved an accuracy of 89%, highlighting the significance of precordial leads V1-V4, especially in the R/S transition and initiation of the QRS complex in V2. Unsupervised analysis revealed that some origins tended to group closer than others, e.g., right coronary cusp (RCC) with a less sparse group than the aortic cusp origins, suggesting identifiable patterns for specific SOOs.

AIMS: Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) using very high-power short-duration (vHPSD) radiofrequency (RF) ablation proved to be safe and effective. However, vHPSD applications result in shallower lesions that might not be always transmural. Multidetector computed tomography-derived left atrial wall thickness (LAWT) maps could enable a thickness-guided switching from vHPSD to the standard-power ablation mode. The aim of this randomized trial was to compare the safety, the efficacy, and the efficiency of a LAWT-guided vHPSD PVI approach with those of the CLOSE protocol for PAF ablation (NCT04298177). METHODS AND RESULTS: Consecutive patients referred for first-time PAF ablation were randomized on a 1:1 basis. In the QDOT-by-LAWT arm, for LAWT ≤2.5 mm, vHPSD ablation was performed; for points with LAWT > 2.5 mm, standard-power RF ablation titrating ablation index (AI) according to the local LAWT was performed. In the CLOSE arm, LAWT information was not available to the operator; ablation was performed according to the CLOSE study settings: AI ≥400 at the posterior wall and ≥550 at the anterior wall. A total of 162 patients were included. In the QDOT-by-LAWT group, a significant reduction in procedure time (40 vs. 70 min; P < 0.001) and RF time (6.6 vs. 25.7 min; P < 0.001) was observed. No difference was observed between the groups regarding complication rate (P = 0.99) and first-pass isolation (P = 0.99). At 12-month follow-up, no significant differences occurred in atrial arrhythmia-free survival between groups (P = 0.88). CONCLUSION: LAWT-guided PVI combining vHPSD and standard-power ablation is not inferior to the CLOSE protocol in terms of 1-year atrial arrhythmia-free survival and demonstrated a reduction in procedural and RF times.

This study aimed to compare the effects of an 8-week short-term training program, comprising repeated sprints or running-based high-intensity intermittent training (HIIT), on the aerobic fitness and repeated sprint ability (RSA) performance of sub-elite basketball referees. Twenty male referees participated in supervised training sessions twice a week. They were randomly assigned to either the RSA-based group (RSAG) or the running-based HIIT group (HIITG). The RSAG conducted 3-4 sets of 8 × 20-m all-out sprints, while the HIITG performed 2-3 sets of 6 × 20-s runs at 90% of their maximal velocity achieved in the 30-15 intermittent fitness test (30-15IFT). Referees underwent a graded exercise test on a treadmill, the 30-15IFT, and an RSA test before and after the training program. Both groups showed significant improvement (~3%) in the fastest (22.6 ± 1.4 vs. 23.4 ± 1.7 and 22.0 ±1.9 vs. 22.4 ± 1.7 km·h-1 in RSAG and HIITG, respectively) and mean (21.5 ± 1.2 vs. 22.4 ± 1.4 and 21.3 ± 1.8 vs. 21.7 ± 1.6 km·h-1 in RSAG and HIITG, respectively) sprint velocity of the RSA test (p < 0.05). Moreover, positive changes (p < 0.05) were observed in the 30-15IFT maximal velocity (18.6 ± 1.1 vs. 19.3 ± 1.0 and 19.4 ± 0.9 vs. 20.5 ± 0.9 km·h-1 in RSAG and HIITG, respectively). In conclusion, an 8-week training intervention using either RSA or running-based HIIT led to similar improvements in referees' RSA performance and specific aerobic fitness measures. These findings could assist in devising tailored training programs for basketball referees.

AIMS: Late gadolinium enhancement cardiac magnetic resonance (LGE-CMR) detects myocardial scarring, a risk factor for ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). The LGE-CMR distinguishes core, borderzone (BZ) fibrosis, and BZ channels, crucial components of re-entry circuits. We studied how scar architecture affects inducibility and electrophysiological traits of VA in HCM. METHODS AND RESULTS: We correlated scar composition with programmed ventricular stimulation-inducible VA features using LGE intensity maps. Thirty consecutive patients were enrolled. Thirteen (43%) were non-inducible, 6 (20%) had inducible non-sustained, and 11 (37%) had inducible sustained mono (MMVT)- or polymorphic VT/VF (PVT/VF). Of 17 induced VA, 13 (76%) were MMVT that either ended spontaneously, persisted as sustained monomorphic, or degenerated into PVT/VF. Twenty-seven patients (90%) had LGE. Of these, 17 (57%) had non-sustained or sustained inducible VA. Scar mass significantly increased (P = 0.002) from non-inducible to inducible non-sustained and sustained VA patients in both the BZ and core components. Borderzone channels were found in 23%, 67%, and 91% of non-inducible, inducible non-sustained, and inducible sustained VA patients (P = 0.003). All 13 patients induced with MMVT or monomorphic-initiated PVT/VF had LGE. The origin of 10/13 of these VTs matched scar location, with 8/10 of these LGE regions showing BZ channels. During follow-up (20 months, interquartile range: 7-37), one patient with BZ channels and inducible PVT had an ICD shock for VF. CONCLUSION: Scar architecture determines inducibility and electrophysiological traits of VA in HCM. Larger studies should explore the role of complex LGE patterns in refining risk assessment in HCM patients.

Background: Basketball referees are a vital part of the organised competition system, although they remain an "outgroup" in sport. While physical development and fitness programming are deemed necessary for basketball officiating excellence, there is a paucity of literature exploring strategies for physical fitness management in this population. Methods: This research was a nationwide cross-sectional, self-administered online survey conducted in 2021. A sample of 628 (531 males, 97 females) referees from 18 regional referee organisations in Spain provided individual responses to gather information on demographic details, level of participation in refereeing, physical fitness practices, and match-day exercise-based regimens. The data were described using summary statistics, and the associations of the assessed variables were subsequently calculated using contingency tables. Results: Our findings reveal that a large fraction of the Spanish basketball referee population focuses on aerobic (83%) and strength (73.6%) activities, while less attention is paid to speed (36.9%) and flexibility (23.2%), and agility, coordination, and balance tasks are somewhat overlooked. No significant differences were observed among the referee categories regarding weekly training days or session duration, with most training for 15-60 min per session. Elite referees were more likely to hire personal trainers and engage in strength and flexibility exercises. Sub-elite referees showed a higher tendency to perform stretching and joint mobility activities post-match, while regional referees did so less frequently. Approximately 30.7% of referees across all competitive levels engaged in re-warm-up (RW-U) activities, with stretching and joint mobility being the most prevalent. Conclusions: Spanish basketball referees participate in routine physical exercise and fitness practices, irrespective of their competition level. While warm-up activities are prevalent, some sub-elite and regional referees do not consistently perform them, and re-warm-up routines are not extensively embraced.

AIMS: The aim of our study was to analyse the response to short-coupled atrial extrastimuli to identify areas of hidden slow conduction (HSC) and their relationship with the atrial fibrillation (AF) phenotype. METHODS AND RESULTS: Twenty consecutive patients with paroxysmal AF and persistent AF (10:10) underwent the first pulmonary vein isolation procedure. Triple short-coupled extrastimuli were delivered in sinus rhythm (SR), and the evoked response was analysed: sites exhibiting double or highly fragmented electrograms (EGM) were defined as positive for HSC (HSC+). The delta of the duration of the bipolar EGM was analysed, and bipolar EGM duration maps were built. High-density maps were acquired using a multipolar catheter during AF, SR, and paced rhythm. Spatial co-localization of HSC+ and complex fractionated atrial EGMs (CFAE) during AF was evaluated. Persistent AF showed a higher number and percentage of HSC+ than paroxysmal AF (13.9% vs. 3.3%, P < 0.001). The delta of EGM duration was 53 ± 22 ms for HSC+ compared with 13 ± 11 (10) ms in sites with negative HSC (HSC-) (P < 0.001). The number and density of HSC+ were lower than CFAE during AF (19 vs. 56 per map, P < 0.001). The reproducibility and distribution of HSC+ in repeated maps were superior to CFAE (P = 0.19 vs. P < 0.001). Sites with negative and positive responses showed a similar bipolar voltage in the preceding sinus beat (1.65 ± 1.34 and 1.48 ± 1.47 mV, P = 0.12). CONCLUSION: Functional mapping identifies more discrete and reproducible abnormal substrates than mapping during AF. The HSC+ sites in response to triple extrastimuli are more frequent in persistent AF than in paroxysmal AF.

Drivers of marine disease outbreaks are poorly understood in spite of their growing impact. We present here results from a unique case study examining how cockles Cerastoderma edule have responded to the introduction of the novel protistan Marteilia cochillia, which led in 2012 to cockle fishery collapse in Galician rias. Based on intensive survey for eight years (2011-2019) of two affected shellfish beds, inner and outer in the Ría de Arousa, involving monthly evaluation of cockle health status and estimation of mortality, detailed information is provided of the declining impact of marteiliosis over a wild cockle population with evidence suggesting its increasing resistance. Disease dynamics involved an annual "breaking wave" of prevalence and subsequent cockle mass mortality, causing the near extinction of every recruited cohort. A shift in this pattern, from a severe epidemic towards an endemic profile, was observed in the inner shellfish bed since the cohort that was recruited in 2016, suggesting the hypothesis of increasing marteiliosis resistance through natural selection. Risk factors that may contribute to trigger marteiliosis outbreaks were analysed. Host age and sex did not influence susceptibility to marteiliosis. No clear relationships between environmental conditions (temperature, salinity and upwelling index) or cockle density and disease dynamics were found. Spatial differences in disease dynamics could be due to differences in the abundance of infective stages hypothetically linked to spatial differences in the population dynamics of a putative planktonic intermediate host. All these findings have potential implications for the management of diseased populations.

The validity of small-sided games (SSG) for assessing physical fitness was evaluated in 21 female basketball players from senior (n = 8), under-18 years (n = 6), and under-16 years (n = 7) age categories. Players underwent fitness testing (countermovement jump [CMJ], agility T-test, repeated-sprint ability (RSA) test, and Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test [YYIRT1]) and 3vs3-SSG before and after a 6-week preseason. Player demands were monitored during SSG using local positioning system and heart rate technology. Regarding discriminative validity, senior players produced better CMJ, agility T-test, and YYIRT1 performance (p < 0.05, effect size [ES] = 1.72-2.25), and more distance and PlayerLoad (p < 0.05, ES = 1.53-2.47) during SSG than under-18 players following the preseason. For criterion validity, total distance and distance completing high-intensity decelerations during SSG were significantly (p < 0.05) correlated with CMJ (r = 0.44-0.66), YYIRT1 (r = 0.43-0.63), agility T-test (total distance only, r=-0.51), and RSA test performance (r=-0.49 to -0.52) among all players combined following the preseason. Regarding longitudinal validity, significantly better agility T-test and YYIRT1 performance (p ≤ 0.001, ES = 0.88-0.93) alongside lower heart rate during SSG (p = 0.001, ES = 0.88) were evident for all players combined following the preseason. These results partially support the validity of 3vs3-SSG to assess physical fitness in female basketball players.

AIMS: Epicardial adipose tissue might promote atrial fibrillation (AF) in several ways, including infiltrating the underlying atrial myocardium. However, the role of this potential mechanism has been poorly investigated. The aim of this study is to evaluate the presence of left atrial (LA) infiltrated adipose tissue (inFAT) by analysing multi-detector computer tomography (MDCT)-derived three-dimensional (3D) fat infiltration maps and to compare the extent of LA inFAT between patients without AF history, with paroxysmal, and with persistent AF. METHODS AND RESULTS: Sixty consecutive patients with AF diagnosis (30 persistent and 30 paroxysmal) were enrolled and compared with 20 age-matched control; MDCT-derived images were post-processed to obtain 3D LA inFAT maps for all patients. Volume (mL) and mean signal intensities [(Hounsfield Units (HU)] of inFAT (HU -194; -5), dense inFAT (HU -194; -50), and fat-myocardial admixture (HU -50; -5) were automatically computed by the software. inFAT volume was significantly different across the three groups (P = 0.009), with post-hoc pairwise comparisons showing a significant increase in inFAT volume in persistent AF compared to controls (P = 0.006). Dense inFAT retained a significant difference also after correcting for body mass index (P = 0.028). In addition, more negative inFAT radiodensity values were found in AF patients. Regional distribution analysis showed a significantly higher regional distribution of LA inFAT at left and right superior pulmonary vein antra in AF patients. CONCLUSION: Persistent forms of AF are associated with greater degree of LA intramyocardial adipose infiltration, independently of body mass index. Compared to controls, AF patients present higher LA inFAT volume at left and right superior pulmonary vein antra.

The common cockle is a valuable bivalve species inhabiting the Atlantic European coasts. The parasite Marteilia cochillia has devastated cockle beds in the southern Galician (NW Spain) rias since 2012. Previous data suggested that cockles from Ría de Arousa acquired some resilience to this parasite through natural selection after consecutive annual marteiliosis outbreaks and candidate markers associated with marteiliosis resilience were identified using population genomics and transcriptomics approaches. Here, a common garden experiment was performed using a naïve stock (from Ría de Muros-Noia) and an affected stock (from Ría de Arousa) to test this hypothesis. Breeders from both stocks were used to produce seed cohorts at hatchery, which were pre-grown in a raft (outdoor nursery stage) and deployed in two shellfish beds affected by marteiliosis in Ría de Arousa (growing-out stage). In both beds, the naïve stock showed high marteiliosis prevalence and was fully depleted in a short period, while the affected stock barely showed evidence of marteiliosis. A set of 45 SNPs putatively associated with marteiliosis resilience were fitted for MassARRAY genotyping to check their role in the differential resilience detected between both stocks. Though no significant differentiation was found between the naïve and the affected stocks with neutral markers, 28 SNPs showed significant divergence between them, suggesting that these SNPs were involved in directional selection during eight generations (to the most) of marteiliosis pressure (long-term selection). Furthermore, signals of selection were also detected in the naïve stock along the marteiliosis outbreak in the growing-out stage (short-term selection) and six SNPs, all shared with the long-term evaluation, showed consistent signals of differentiation according to the infection severity. Some of these SNPs were located within immune genes pertaining to families such as proteasome, ubiquitin, tumor necrosis factor, and glutathione S-transferase. These resilience-associated markers will be useful to recover cockle production in Galicia.

Transmissible cancers are malignant cell lineages that spread clonally between individuals. Several such cancers, termed bivalve transmissible neoplasia (BTN), induce leukemia-like disease in marine bivalves. This is the case of BTN lineages affecting the common cockle, Cerastoderma edule, which inhabits the Atlantic coasts of Europe and northwest Africa. To investigate the evolution of cockle BTN, we collected 6,854 cockles, diagnosed 390 BTN tumors, generated a reference genome and assessed genomic variation across 61 tumors. Our analyses confirmed the existence of two BTN lineages with hemocytic origins. Mitochondrial variation revealed mitochondrial capture and host co-infection events. Mutational analyses identified lineage-specific signatures, one of which likely reflects DNA alkylation. Cytogenetic and copy number analyses uncovered pervasive genomic instability, with whole-genome duplication, oncogene amplification and alkylation-repair suppression as likely drivers. Satellite DNA distributions suggested ancient clonal origins. Our study illuminates long-term cancer evolution under the sea and reveals tolerance of extreme instability in neoplastic genomes.

A huge, unprecedented mortality of cockle Cerastoderma edule caused by the protist Marteilia cochillia, which had never before been detected in Galicia (NW Spain), brought on a cockle fishery collapse in the Ría de Arousa (Galicia) in 2012. Since then, the disease dynamic pattern in the shellfish bed of Lombos do Ulla (at the inner area of that ria) involved an overwhelming annual wave of infections and subsequent cockle mass mortality that caused the near extinction of every cohort recruited to that bed. However, a pattern shift was detected among wild cohorts recruiting since 2016, with progressive declines of marteiliosis prevalence and increments in cockle survival. This suggested 2 non-exclusive hypotheses: increasing marteiliosis resistance through natural selection, and reduced abundance and/or virulence of the parasite. A field experiment was performed to assess these hypotheses by comparing marteiliosis prevalence and severity, as well as mortality, in cockles that naturally recruited to this bed in 2017 and 2018 with those of naïve cockles collected from a marteiliosis-free area and transplanted into Lombos do Ulla in 2017 and 2018. Marteiliosis prevalence and cumulative cockle mortality quickly reached very high values among the transplanted cockles, demonstrating that the parasite remained present and virulent in the area. Conversely, marteiliosis prevalence and cockle mortality were much lower in the cockles that recruited to Lombos do Ulla, suggesting increased resistance that may have been driven by natural selection. The young age at which cockles start reproduction and the very high mortality caused by marteiliosis may have enhanced natural selection.

Knowledge of genetic structure at the finest level is essential for the conservation of genetic resources. Despite no visible barriers limiting gene flow, significant genetic structure has been shown in marine species. The common cockle (Cerastoderma edule) is a bivalve of great commercial and ecological value inhabiting the Northeast Atlantic Ocean. Previous population genomics studies demonstrated significant structure both across the Northeast Atlantic, but also within small geographic areas, highlighting the need to investigate fine-scale structuring. Here, we analysed two geographic areas that could represent opposite models of structure for the species: (1) the SW British Isles region, highly fragmented due to biogeographic barriers, and (2) Galicia (NW Spain), a putative homogeneous region. A total of 9250 SNPs genotyped by 2b-RAD on 599 individuals from 22 natural beds were used for the analysis. The entire SNP dataset mostly confirmed previous observations related to genetic diversity and differentiation; however, neutral and divergent SNP outlier datasets enabled disentangling physical barriers from abiotic environmental factors structuring both regions. While Galicia showed a homogeneous structure, the SW British Isles region was split into four reliable genetic regions related to oceanographic features and abiotic factors, such as sea surface salinity and temperature. The information gathered supports specific management policies of cockle resources in SW British and Galician regions also considering their particular socio-economic characteristics; further, these new data will be added to those recently reported in the Northeast Atlantic to define sustainable management actions across the whole distribution range of the species.
