Introduction: Emotional contagion is achieved by inferring and emotionally resonating with other persons' feelings. It is unclear whether age-related changes in emotional contagion for infant sounds are modulated by the experience of childbirth or childcare. This study aims to evaluate changes in inference and emotional resonance for positive and negative infant sounds (laughter and crying) among women, based on age and parous experience. Methods: A total of 241 women (60 young nulliparous, 60 young parous, 60 old nulliparous, and 61 old parous) completed a web-based questionnaire. After listening to three types of infant sounds (laughter, cooing, and crying), participants responded with their valence for hearing infant sounds and estimated infant valence on an 11-point Likert scale. Results: The analysis for emotional resonance revealed that the correlation coefficient between self and estimated infant valences was greater in young parous and old nulliparous women than in young nulliparous women, in laughter and cooing sounds. However, correlation coefficients for crying did not differ among any of the four groups. Conclusion: The degree of emotional resonance for infant valence increased depending on age and parous-experience for positive infant sounds.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine changes in salivary immunoglobulin A (s-IgA) secretion at different intensities or durations of acute exercise. METHODS: Twelve healthy untrained young males were included in randomized crossover trials in Experiment 1 (cycling exercise for 30 min at a work rate equivalent to 35%, 55%, and 75% maximal oxygen uptake [ V ˙ O2max]) and Experiment 2 (cycling exercise at 55% V ˙ O2max intensity for 30, 60, and 90 min). Saliva samples were collected at baseline, immediately after, and 60 min after each exercise. RESULTS: Experiment 1: The percentage change in the s-IgA secretion rate in the 75% V ˙ O2max trial was significantly lower than that in the 55% V ˙ O2max trial immediately after exercise (- 45.7%). The percentage change in the salivary concentration of cortisol, an s-IgA regulating factor, immediately after exercise significantly increased compared to that at baseline in the 75% V ˙ O2max trial (+ 107.6%). A significant negative correlation was observed between the percentage changes in saliva flow rate and salivary cortisol concentration (r = - 0.52, P < 0.01). Experiment 2: The percentage change in the s-IgA secretion rate in the 90-min trial was significantly lower than that in the 30-min trial immediately after exercise (-37.0%). However, the percentage change in salivary cortisol concentration remained the same. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that a reduction in s-IgA secretion is induced by exercise intensity of greater than or equal to 75% V ˙ O2max for 30 min or exercise duration of greater than or equal to 90 min at 55% V ˙ O2max in healthy untrained young men.

When athletes in ball game sports start sprinting in the forward direction from a parallel stance, they commonly use the forward- and false-step techniques. Previous studies focusing on the performance of short-distance sprints starting in the forward direction have demonstrated that the false-step technique is superior to the forward-step technique. Although athletes start sprinting in various directions based on relevant visual cues, such as movements of the ball or the opponent players, the effectiveness of each technique for starting a sprint in the other direction is still unclear. This study aims to clarify the effectiveness of each technique in improving the performance of the short-distance sprint starting in the lateral direction. In this study, 20 athletes started 5-m sprints in the right direction from the parallel stance using either of these two techniques. Kinematic and kinetic analyses were performed from movement initiation to the flight phase after the second step in the sprinting direction. The average and terminal sprint velocities throughout this range were larger in the forward-step technique (p = 0.039 and 0.003), indicating its superiority in traveling and accelerating performance. The change of sprint velocity in the initial phase until the contact of the first step in the sprinting direction was smaller in the false-step technique (p < 0.001), although this phase included "false step." These results indicate that the forward-step technique is superior in sprints starting in the lateral direction, and the advantage results from greater acceleration in the initial phase immediately after movement initiation. These findings imply the sprint-directional dependence of the relative superiority of these techniques, providing an impetus for athletes and coaches to consider and establish the effective training and coaching methods of short-distance sprints.

BACKGROUND: Minimizing postural sway during tiptoe standing is essential for ballet dancers. Investigation of the activity of the plantar intrinsic foot muscles (PIFMs) may provide insight into postural sway in dancers. Herein, we compared PIFM activity during tiptoe standing between dancers and non-dancers and examined its relationship with postural sway. METHODS: We enrolled 14 female ballet dancers and 13 female non-dancers. Electromyography (EMG) amplitudes of 64 channels of PIFMs and center of pressure (COP) data were recorded during bipedal tiptoe standing tasks performed with ankle plantarflexion angles of 20°, 40°, and 60° (dancers only). The EMG amplitudes were normalized to those during the maximum voluntary contraction, and the muscle activity level and its coefficient of variation over time (EMG-CVtime) during the task were assessed. Standard deviations in the anteroposterior and mediolateral directions, velocity, and area were calculated from the COP data. RESULTS: Most COP and EMG variables were significantly lower in dancers than in non-dancers in both the 20° and 40° tasks (p < 0.05). Significant correlations were found between most combinations of the COP and EMG variables in both the 20° and 40° tasks in the whole cohort (r = 0.468-0.807, p ≤ 0.014). In the 60° task in dancers, COP velocity was strongly correlated with EMG-CVtime (r = 0.700, p = 0.005). CONCLUSION: These results provide novel evidence that the PIFMs do not require high activity, but rather that its low, steady activity is the key, to achieve less postural sway during bipedal tiptoe standing in dancers.

We aimed to evaluate the blood lactate level in response to two bouts of exercise. First, we hypothesized that blood lactate elevation in response to moderate-intensity aerobic exercise (MIAE) would be lower at the end of the second bout of MIAE than the first bout of MIAE. In this context, we also hypothesized that lactate accumulation at the end of resistance exercise (RE) would be reduced if MIAE is performed before RE (i.e., concurrent exercise; CE). If so, we hypothesized that the order of the CE (i.e., RE + MIAE vs. MIAE + RE) influences blood lactate kinetics. To test the hypotheses, forty-three healthy men participated in three studies. In study 1, 20 men (age 21 ± 2 years) performed two bouts of a 20-min MIAE separated by a 20-min rest interval. In study 2, 11 men (age 22 ± 1 years) performed RE only and CE (MIAE + RE; ARCE) with a 20-min rest interval in a crossover design. In study 3, 12 men (age 21 ± 2 years) performed both CEs, which were ARCE and RE + MIAE (RACE), with a 20-min rest interval in a crossover design. We measured blood lactate before and at the end of each exercise session. In study 1, the blood lactate response to the second bout of MIAE was lower than that of the first bout (P < 0.001, r = 0.68). However, the blood lactate response to the ARCE trial was not lower than the response to the RE trial in study 2 (P = 0.475, r = 0.22). The results of study 3 showed that the RACE and ARCE trials induced a similar lactate response (MIAE P = 0.423, r = 0.28; RE P = 0.766, d = 0.03). These observations indicate that whereas lactate accumulation might be diminished by a second bout of MIAE, a different type of exercise (i.e., aerobic/resistance) did not result in a diminished lactate accumulation in response to a second bout of exercise.

Background: The triceps surae muscle plays important roles in fundamental human movements. However, this muscle is relatively unresponsive to resistance training (difficult to hypertrophy) but prone to atrophy with inactivity compared with other muscles. Thus, identifying an effective training modality for the triceps surae is warranted. This study compared triceps surae muscle hypertrophy after standing/knee-extended versus seated/knee-flexed plantarflexion (calf-raise) training, where the gastrocnemius is lengthened and shortened, respectively. Methods: Fourteen untrained adults conducted calf-raise training with one leg in a standing/knee-extended position and the other leg in a seated/knee 90°-flexed position at 70% of one-repetition maximum. Each leg performed 10 repetitions/set, 5 sets/session, 2 sessions/week for 12 weeks. Before and after the intervention, magnetic resonance imaging scans were obtained to assess muscle volume of each and the whole triceps surae. Results: Muscle volume significantly increased in all three muscles and the whole triceps surae for both legs (p ≤ 0.031), except for the gastrocnemius muscles of the seated condition leg (p = 0.147-0.508). The changes in muscle volume were significantly greater for the standing than seated condition leg in the lateral gastrocnemius (12.4% vs. 1.7%), medial gastrocnemius (9.2% vs. 0.6%), and whole triceps surae (5.6% vs. 2.1%) (p ≤ 0.011), but similar between legs in the soleus (2.1% vs. 2.9%, p = 0.410). Conclusion: Standing calf-raise was by far more effective, therefore recommended, than seated calf-raise for inducing muscle hypertrophy of the gastrocnemius and consequently the whole triceps surae. This result and similar between-condition hypertrophy in the soleus collectively suggest that training at long muscle lengths promotes muscle hypertrophy.

BACKGROUND: Plantar intrinsic foot muscles (PIFMs) are composed of 10 muscles and play an essential role in achieving functional diversity in the foot. Previous studies have identified that the morphological profiles of PIFMs vary between individuals. The morphological profiles of a muscle theoretically reflect its output potentials: the physiological cross-sectional area (PCSA) of a muscle is proportional to its maximum force generation, and the muscle fiber length (FL) is its shortening velocity. This implies that the PCSA and FL may be useful variables for characterizing the functional diversity of the individual PIFM. The purpose of this study was to examine how individual PIFMs can be classified based on their PCSA and FL. METHODS: In 26 healthy young adult males, the muscle volume and muscle length of seven PIFMs (abductor hallucis, ABDH; abductor digiti minimi, ABDM; adductor hallucis oblique head, ADDH-OH; ADDH transverse head, ADDH-TH; flexor digitorum brevis, FDB; flexor hallucis brevis, FHB; quadratus plantae, QP) were measured using magnetic resonance imaging. The PCSA and FL of each of the seven PIFMs were then estimated by combining the data measured from the participants and those of muscle architectural parameters documented from cadavers in previous studies. A total of 182 data samples (26 participants × 7 muscles) were classified into clusters using k-means cluster analysis. The optimal number of clusters was evaluated using the elbow method. RESULTS: The data samples of PIFMs were assigned to four clusters with different morphological profiles: ADDH-OH and FHB, characterised by large PCSA and short FL (high force generation and slow shortening velocity potentials); ABDM and FDB, moderate PCSA and moderate FL (moderate force generation and moderate shortening velocity potentials); QP, moderate PCSA and long FL (moderate force generation and rapid shortening velocity potentials); ADDH-TH, small PCSA and moderate FL (low force generation and moderate shortening velocity potentials). ABDH components were assigned equivalently to the first and second clusters. CONCLUSIONS: The approach adopted in this study may provide a novel perspective for interpreting the PIFMs' function based on their maximal force generation and shortening velocity potentials.

BACKGROUND: Leisure activities are believed to contribute to healthy ageing. We compared the effects of choir singing and go playing on cortisol levels in Japanese older adults. We also examined its relevance to the older adults' emotional affect and cognitive performance. METHODS: Thirty-six older adults participated either in choir or go playing, within a 2 (groups)×2 (time points) design. Dependent measures included levels of salivary cortisol, as well as key psychological, cognitive, and neuropsychological measures. RESULTS: A significant two-way interaction was observed, showing that levels of salivary cortisol decreased for the choir but increased for the go groups. The decrease in salivary cortisol for the choir group correlated with the participant's negative affect and their degree of cognitive impairment. CONCLUSION: Choir singing has the potential to reduce Japanese older adults' physiological stress. The decreases can be seen more prominently for people with stronger negative affect and cognitive impairment. Further research is required to replicate these effects.

Swimmers generate vortices around their bodies during underwater undulatory swimming (UUS). Alteration of UUS movement would induce changes in vortex structure and fluid force. This study investigated whether a skilled swimmer's movement generated an effective vortex and fluid force for increasing the UUS velocity. A three-dimensional digital model and kinematic data yielded during UUS with maximum effort were collected for one skilled and one unskilled swimmer. The skilled swimmer's UUS kinematics were input into the skilled swimmer's model (SK-SM) and unskilled swimmer's model (SK-USM), followed by the kinematics of the unskilled swimmer (USK-USM and USK-SM, respectively). The vortex area, circulation, and peak drag force were determined using computational fluid dynamics. A larger vortex with greater circulation at the ventral side of the trunk and a greater circulation vortex behind the swimmer were observed in SK-USM compared to USK-USM. USK-SM generated a smaller vortex on the ventral side of the trunk and behind the swimmer, with a weaker circulation behind the swimmer compared to SK-SM. The peak drag force was larger for SK-USM than for USK-USM. Our results indicate that an effective vortex for propulsion was generated when a skilled swimmer's UUS kinematics was input in the other swimmer's model.

Although the ergogenic effects of 3-6 mg/kg caffeine are widely accepted, the efficacy of low doses of caffeine has been discussed. However, it is unclear whether the ergogenic effects of caffeine on jump performance are dose responsive in a wide range of doses. This study aimed to examine the effect of very low (1 mg/kg) to moderate doses of caffeine, including commonly utilized ergogenic doses (i.e., 3 and 6 mg/kg), on vertical jump performance. A total of 32 well-trained collegiate sprinters and jumpers performed countermovement jumps and squat jumps three times each in a double-blind, counterbalanced, randomized, crossover design. Participants ingested a placebo or 1, 3, or 6 mg/kg caffeine 60 min before jumping. Compared with the placebo, 6 mg/kg caffeine significantly enhanced countermovement jump (p < .001) and squat jump (p = .012) heights; furthermore, 1 and 3 mg/kg of caffeine also significantly increased countermovement jump height (1 mg/kg: p = .002, 3 mg/kg: p < .001) but not squat jump height (1 mg/kg: p = .436, 3 mg/kg: p = .054). There were no significant differences among all caffeine doses in both jumps (all p > .05). In conclusion, even at a dose as low as 1 mg/kg, caffeine improved vertical jump performance in a dose-independent manner. This study provides new insight into the applicability and feasibility of 1 mg/kg caffeine as a safe and effective ergogenic strategy for jump performance.

Preparatory lower-limb loading conditions may affect the jump-to-reach performance of soccer goalkeepers. This study investigated the effect of pre-jump lower-limb loading/unloading during bilateral knee flexion-extension movements on sideways jump-to-reach performance in 18 male collegiate soccer goalkeepers. Participants performed the two-choice (high and low targets) reaction-time single-leg jump-to-reach task under two conditions: without preparatory movements (no-prep) and with continuous alternating knee extension and flexion movements (prep). The 'go' cue was provided with different preparatory loading conditions during the pre-jump knee extension and flexion phases. Performance was assessed using three-dimensional kinematic data and ground reaction forces. A significant main effect of the preparatory condition was observed for the jump take-off time. Pairwise comparisons revealed that the jump take-off time was 3.4-4.4% faster when initiated during the knee flexion phase than the no-prep condition and the extension phase (p ≤ .028). Increasing lower-limb loading and downward body movement with knee flexion appeared to facilitate effective loading to take-off to reach the high target and faster downward-directed take-off to reach the low target, respectively. Pre-jump knee flexion movement could be utilised by soccer goalkeepers to facilitate faster take-off to maximise their chances of saving shots within the reach of single-leg side-jumping.

The muscle force attained during concentric contractions is augmented by a preceding eccentric contraction (the stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) effect). At present, tendon elongation is considered the primary mechanism. However, we recently found that the magnitude of the SSC effect was not different, even after removing the Achilles tendon. To resolve these discrepant results, direct measurement of changes in Achille tendon length is required. Therefore, this study aimed to elucidate the influence of tendon elongation on the SSC effect by directly measuring the changes in Achilles tendon length. The rat soleus was subjected to pure concentric contractions (pure shortening trials) and concentric contractions with a preceding eccentric contraction (SSC trials). During these contractions, the Achilles tendon length was visualized using a video camera. The muscle force attained during the concentric contraction phase in the SSC trial was significantly larger than that in the pure shortening trial (p = 0.022), indicating the existence of the SSC effect. However, the changes in Achilles tendon length were not different between trials (i.e., the magnitude of tendon shortening attained during the shortening phase was 0.20 ± 0.14 mm for the SSC trial vs. 0.17 ± 0.09 mm for the pure shortening trial), indicating that the observed SSC effect is difficult to be explained by the elastic energy stored in tendons or muscle-tendon interaction. In conclusion, the effect of tendon elongation on the SSC effect should be reconsidered, and other factors may contribute to the SSC effect.

This study aimed to examine differences in the intestinal microbiota diversity in individuals with and without a history of a lateral ankle sprain (LAS). Fifty male college student athletes with (n=32) and without (n=18) a LAS history participated in this study. Faecal samples were collected in the morning after awakening during an off-season, and faecal microbiota were characterized via bacteria 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Alpha-diversity metrics and ß-diversity indices were calculated to assess the gut microbiota diversity. The LAS-history group significantly had lower Chao1 (p=0.020) and abundance-based coverage estimators (p=0.035) indices compared to the control group. Gut microbiota composition was not significantly different between athletes with a LAS history and controls (R2 =0.01, p 0.414). Athletes with a history of LASs had significantly higher proportions of Bacteroides Fragilis (p=0.024) and Ruminococcus Gnavus (p=0.021) compared with controls. The gut microbiota of athletes with a LAS history had less richness compared to controls, indicating potential associations between a LAS and the gut microbiota. This study highlights the potential link of a LAS to global health. This study may help raise awareness of strategies to prevent long-term health-related negative consequences in people suffering from LASs.

Point prevalence of the biomechanical dimension of dysfunctional breathing patterns among competitive athletes. J Strength Cond Res 37(2): 270-276, 2023-There is growing evidence of associations between altered biomechanical breathing patterns and numerous musculoskeletal and psychological conditions. The prevalence of dysfunctional and diaphragmatic breathing patterns is unknown among athletic populations. The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of dysfunctional and diaphragmatic breathing patterns among athletic populations with a clinical measure to assess the biomechanical dimension of breathing patterns. Using a cross-sectional design, 1,933 athletes across multiple sports and ages were screened from 2017 to 2020. Breathing patterns were assessed using the Hi-Lo test in the standing position. Scores of the Hi-Lo test were determined based on the presence or absence of abdominal excursion, anterior-posterior chest expansion, superior rib cage migration, and shoulder elevation. The Hi-Lo test scores were used to categorize observational breathing mechanics as dysfunctional and diaphragmatic breathing patterns. The prevalence of athletes with dysfunctional breathing patterns was 90.6% (1,751 of 1,933). Athletes with diaphragmatic breathing patterns accounted for 9.4% of all athletes in our sample (182 of 1,933). There were no differences in the proportion of breathing patterns between male and female athletes ( p = 0.424). Breathing patterns observations were associated with sport-setting categories ( p = 0.002). The highest percentages of dysfunctional breathers were in middle school student athletes (93.7%), followed by elementary school student athletes (91.2%), high school student athletes (90.6%), professional/semiprofessional athletes (87.5%), and collegiate athletes (84.8%). The current study observed that dysfunctional breathing patterns (90.6%) in the biomechanical dimension were more prevalent than diaphragmatic breathing pattern (9.4%) among competitive athletes. These results suggest that clinicians may need to consider screening breathing patterns and implementing intervention programs aimed to improve the efficiency of biomechanical dimensions of breathing patterns in athletic populations. This study may help raise awareness of impacts of dysfunctional breathing patterns on athletes' health and performance.

The biarticular triceps brachii long head (TBLong) is lengthened more in the overhead than neutral arm position. We compared triceps brachii hypertrophy after elbow extension training performed in the overhead vs. neutral arm position. Using a cable machine, 21 adults conducted elbow extensions (90-0°) with one arm in the overhead (Overhead-Arm) and the other arm in the neutral (Neutral-Arm) position at 70% one-repetition maximum (1RM), 10 reps/set, 5 sets/session, 2 sessions/week for 12 weeks. Training load was gradually increased (+5% 1RM/session) when the preceding session was completed without repetition failure. 1RM of the assigned condition and MRI-measured muscle volume of the TBLong, monoarticular lateral and medial heads (TBLat+Med), and whole triceps brachii (Whole-TB) were assessed pre- and post-training. Training load and 1RM increased in both arms similarly (+62-71% at post, P = 0.285), while their absolute values/weights were always lower in Overhead-Arm (-34-39%, P < 0.001). Changes in muscle volume in Overhead-Arm compared to Neutral-Arm were 1.5-fold greater for the TBLong (+28.5% vs. +19.6%, Cohen's d = 0.61, P < 0.001), 1.4-fold greater for the TBLat+Med (+14.6% vs. +10.5%, d = 0.39, P = 0.002), and 1.4-fold greater for the Whole-TB (+19.9% vs. +13.9%, d = 0.54, P < 0.001). Introduction: This present study aimed to compare ultrasonographic measures of femoral articular cartilage during two-year seasons between collegiate rugby players who have attended supervised rehabilitation following intracapsular knee joint injury and those without a history of knee injury. Methods: Using a prospective observational study design, 12 male collegiate rugby players with a previous history of intracapsular knee joint injury who have received and completed supervised rehabilitation following their injury and 44 players without knee joint injury participated in this study. Ultrasonographic images were used to verify changes in femoral articular cartilage thickness and cross-sectional area (CSA) with or without a previous history of knee joint injury over two consecutive rugby seasons. Results: Significant time main effects were observed for the lateral condylar thickness (p < 0.001), the intercondylar thickness (p = 0.001), the medial condylar thickness (p < 0.001), and CSA (p < 0.001). No significant interactions nor group main effects were identified for all femoral articular cartilage (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Collegiate rugby players demonstrated a decrease in femoral articular cartilage thickness and CSA over two-year consecutive rugby seasons. These findings indicate that engaging in collegiate rugby induces alterations in femoral articular cartilage structure. Furthermore, there were no differences in all femoral cartilage outcome measures between rugby players with and without a previous history of traumatic knee joint injury. Therefore, attending supervised rehabilitation at the time of their knee joint injury appeared to reduce the impact of a previous history of intracapsular knee joint injury on the change in femoral articular cartilage thickness and CSA among active rugby players.

Swimmers can produce horizontal body velocity by generating and shedding vortices around their body during underwater undulatory swimming (UUS). It has been hypothesized that the horizontal shedding velocity, area and circulation of the vortex around the swimmer's body are associated with UUS performance. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the shedding velocity, area and circulation of vortices around swimmers' bodies are correlated with the horizontal body velocity during UUS. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was conducted to obtain the vortex structure during UUS in nine male swimmers. Morphological and kinematic data of each subject were obtained and used to reconstruct the UUS movement on CFD. The horizontal velocity of the center of vorticity, the area and circulation of vortices around the ventral side of the trunk, dorsal side of shoulder and waist, and behind the swimmer were determined from the simulation results. Positive correlations were found between the vortex area and circulation around the ventral side of the trunk (area r = 0.938, p < 0.05; circulation r = 0.915, p < 0.05) and behind the swimmer (area r = 0.738, p < 0.05; circulation r = -0.680, p < 0.05), and the horizontal body velocity. The horizontal shedding velocity of the center of vorticity of the vortices around the swimmer's body was not significantly correlated with the horizontal body velocity. These results suggest that the generation of a large and strong vortex around the trunk and behind the swimmer is associated with great UUS performance.

We are emotionally moved when we give birth to a child, witness the triumph of an athlete, listen to a beautiful piece of music, and so forth. Such moving experiences have been described as a form of emotion, by terms such as being moved, awe, and kama muta, each of which have been studied as a separate, but interrelated, psychological phenomenon. Japanese people use the term kando to describe these experiences collectively. In this study, we propose that kando should be treated as an umbrella term covering being moved, awe, and kama muta. To this end, we reviewed the literature on kando conducted by Japanese researchers and compared it to relevant concepts, mainly examined in Western countries. We also reviewed the literature on the generative mechanism of kando, and established that emotional and physical reactions are important to determine the degree of kando across the cases with and without storyline. Furthermore, individual characteristics such as trait empathy may generate a stronger degree of kando. Kando experiences can affect subsequent behaviors and cognition, though we still need evidence that such change can be triggered genuinely by the experience of kando. We suggest that kando may make our neuro-cognitive network tend toward more direct, unconscious, and impulsive decision making. One of the remaining questions in this domain is whether the mental construct of kando can find an equivalent to people in Western countries. For this purpose, events and reactions relevant to kando experiences should be systematically collected from a broad population.

BACKGROUND: As an adjunct to running training, heavy resistance and plyometric training have recently drawn attention as potential training modalities that improve running economy and running time trial performance. However, the comparative effectiveness is unknown. The present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine if there are different effects of heavy resistance training versus plyometric training as an adjunct to running training on running economy and running time trial performance in long-distance runners. METHODS: Electronic databases of PubMed, Web of Science, and SPORTDiscus were searched. Twenty-two studies completely satisfied the selection criteria. Data on running economy and running time trial performance were extracted for the meta-analysis. Subgroup analyses were performed with selected potential moderators. RESULTS: The pooled effect size for running economy in heavy resistance training was greater (g = - 0.32 [95% confidence intervals [CIs] - 0.55 to - 0.10]: effect size = small) than that in plyometric training (g = -0.13 [95% CIs - 0.47 to 0.21]: trivial). The effect on running time trial performance was also larger in heavy resistance training (g = - 0.24 [95% CIs - 1.04 to - 0.55]: small) than that in plyometric training (g = - 0.17 [95% CIs - 0.27 to - 0.06]: trivial). Heavy resistance training with nearly maximal loads (≥ 90% of 1 repetition maximum [1RM], g = - 0.31 [95% CIs - 0.61 to - 0.02]: small) provided greater effects than those with lower loads (< 90% 1RM, g = - 0.17 [95% CIs - 1.05 to 0.70]: trivial). Greater effects were evident when training was performed for a longer period in both heavy resistance (10-14 weeks, g = - 0.45 [95% CIs - 0.83 to - 0.08]: small vs. 6-8 weeks, g = - 0.21 [95% CIs - 0.56 to 0.15]: small) and plyometric training (8-10 weeks, g = 0.26 [95% CIs - 0.67 to 0.15]: small vs. 4-6 weeks, g = - 0.06 [95% CIs 0.67 to 0.55]: trivial). CONCLUSIONS: Heavy resistance training, especially with nearly maximal loads, may be superior to plyometric training in improving running economy and running time trial performance. In addition, running economy appears to be improved better when training is performed for a longer period in both heavy resistance and plyometric training.

We examined whether the force loss induced by 2,3-butanedione monoxime affects isometric and eccentric forces differently. Single skinned muscle fibers were activated at an average sarcomere length of 2.4 µm and then stretched to 3.0 µm. This trial was performed with and without 2,3-butanedione monoxime to calculate the magnitude of force loss attained at several time points: pre-stretch phase at 2.4 µm, eccentric phase, end of eccentric contraction, and post-stretch phase at 3.0 µm. The magnitude of force loss was significantly larger in the pre-stretch phase than at the other time points. Further, the mitigated force loss in the eccentric contraction was more prominent in the long condition than in the short condition. We suggest that the eccentric force is relatively preserved compared with the reference isometric force (pre-stretch) when cross-bridge cycling is inhibited, possibly because of the contribution of the elastic force produced by titin.
