RESUMEN

Objectives: To determine the prevalence of anemia in female patients and its association with age, nutritional status, body mass index, number of children, intra-oral and extra-oral clinical finding. Materials and Methods: A total of 1000 participants in various age groups were taken as sample, and a pro forma was used to collect data. Hemoglobin was recorded using Sahli's method and categorized according to WHO. Statistical relation between anemia and age, nutritional status, BMI, marital status, intra-oral signs, and extra-oral signs was recorded. Results: A total of 485 out of 1000 patients in total had hemoglobin less than 12 gm%, 247 patients in the age group of 14-30 years, 188 patients in age group of 31-50 years, and 50 patients above 51 years had hemoglobin below 12 gm%; 188 vegetarian patients and 300 in the mixed category had hemoglobin below 12 gm%; 285 patients with BMI less than 18 were anemic; 270 patients without any intra-oral signs, 70 patients with bald tongue, 69 patients with cheilitis, 76 with both bald tongue and cheilitis were anemic; and 140 patients without any extra oral signs and 345 with pallor were anemic. Conclusion: The study concluded that these could be a risk factor for anemia in women, and there is a need to develop strategies for health education.

RESUMEN

Aim: To determine the therapeutic effect and efficacy of oral colchicine tablet and intralesional injection of hyaluronidase with and without ultrasound therapy in the clinical course of oral submucous fibrosis. Materials and Methods: This comparative study involving 45 human participants was divided into three equal groups. The participants in group 1 received oral colchicine and intralesional hyaluronidase. The participants in group 2 received oral colchicine, intralesional hyaluronidase, and ultrasound therapy. The group 3 participants were treated with intralesional dexamethasone and hyaluronidase. Intergroup assessments were done using repeated measures of ANOVA test, where P value of <0.05 was considered as statistically significant difference. Results: Group 2 patients had maximum improvement with respect to all the parameters. Conclusion: Therapeutic ultrasound can be given effectively as an adjunct therapy along with conventional therapy in OSMF patients.

RESUMEN

Salivary stones are termed as sialoliths, and the condition is referred to as sialolithiasis. Pain and swelling in the affected area, especially after eating, occur often. Small, easily accessible stones may be managed with conservative methods, such as milking of ducts, along with palliative care, whereas bigger, more difficult-to-reach stones need surgical removal. In this article, we describe a case of sialolithiasis affecting the right submandibular salivary gland, which was treated by removing the gland and stone surgically. When big stones and the gland are removed extra orally, the results are favorable. Submandibular gland sialoliths are the most frequent kind of salivary gland illness. The treatment of this salivary system problem depends on the patient's clinical history, the size of the sialolith, and the degree of cooperation.

RESUMEN

Chondromyxoid fibroma is an unusual, benign bone tumour that is usually sited in the metaphyseal region of the long bones. It accounts for less than 1% of all bone tumours. It manifests predominantly in males in their second and third decades of life. Rarely, it occurs in the bones of the craniofacial skeleton. For small, lesions enucleation and curettage and for larger lesions, resection followed by are the treatment modalities available. Here, we present a case of chondromyxoid fibroma with respect to the right side of the mandible which was managed by surgical resection followed by reconstruction under general anaesthesia. Resection followed by reconstruction provides satisfactory outcomes, especially in cases with large lesions. Chondromyxoid fibroma is an asymptomatic, benign, slow-growing lesion but can rapidly expand and involve the greater area of bone. Thus, its detection at an early stage and treatment at the proper time can lead to less morbidity associated with the lesion and improved quality of life of the patient.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Ossifying fibromas are rare, non-aggressive benign tumours of the bone, commonly involving the posterior mandible in middle-aged individuals with a female predilection. FINDINGS: Clinical manifestations include asymptomatic expansion of the mandible with infrequent maxillary lesions, pain, malocclusion, and compromised quality of life including aesthetic perception. Owing to multiplicity of features, tendency of recurrence, and possibility of malignant transformation, the diagnosis, treatment, and post-operative management of ossifying fibroma are always a challenge. TAKEAWAY LESSONS: Study aims to report a clinical case of extensive swelling involving the coronoid process and condyle on the right side to crossing the mid-line of the mandible with compromised functions and aesthetics. The article describes the clinical, histopathological, and radiological features of the case. The possible treatment and challenges encountered are discussed.

RESUMEN

The traumatic bone cyst was first described by Lucas in 1929 and later by Rushton. A solitary bone cyst (SBC) is a nonneoplastic osseous lesion affecting ≥95% of the metaphyses of long bones such as the proximal humerus and femur. The incidence of cyst affecting the jaws is 1% of all the cyst. About 89% of the lesion occurs in the mandible and 11% in the maxilla. Majority of the lesions occur in the posterior mandible, especially in the premolar-molar region. In this case report, we are presenting one such case of multiple lesions of SBC in mandible with systematic review of the literature.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is an important worldwide public health challenge because of its high frequency and risk of cardiovascular and renal disease. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of undiagnosed hypertension as well as inadequately controlled hypertension among general population who sought tooth extraction at Army College of Dental Sciences, Secunderabad. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Only 1200 patients in the age group of 20-60 years who sought tooth extraction were included in the study. Blood pressure (BP) was measured for three times in all patients. The readings were quantized into four categories which included normal, prehypertensive stage, and Stage 1 and Stage 2 of hypertension. The BP was assessed for the following variables - gender, habits of gutkha chewing, smoking and alcohol, regular exercise, age, and effect of local anesthesia. RESULTS: Nearly 24.4% of new cases of hypertension were diagnosed among all participants reported to the dental clinic. After giving local anesthesia, 16.71% increase in BP was observed in Stage 1 and 2.35% increase in Stage 2 hypertension. CONCLUSION: This study reveals that dentists play an important role in the early diagnosis of hypertension of many dental patients who are unaware of being hypertensive. This role should be emphasized in our specialty as a standard of care to prevent life-threatening complications.
