BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory condition primarily affecting the joints. The higher prevalence of RA among females, combined with the known effects of sex hormones on immune function, has led researchers to investigate the potential relationship between menopausal status and the risk, severity, or progression of RA. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the association between menopause and rheumatoid arthritis. METHODS: In 2023, we conducted a comprehensive search across multiple databases, including Google Scholar, Scopus, PubMed/MEDLINE, Science Direct, Web of Science, EMBASE, Springer, and ProQuest. The search aimed to identify studies exploring the association between menopause and rheumatoid arthritis. RESULTS: Our analysis revealed that post-menopausal women had a higher risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis compared to pre-menopausal women, with an estimated odds ratio of 1.35 (95% CI: 1.04-1.67). Additionally, women who experienced early menopause (defined as onset before age 45) showed significantly higher odds of developing RA, with an odds ratio of 2.97 (95% CI: 1.73-4.22). CONCLUSION: These findings highlight the importance of considering menopausal status when assessing the risk of RA development in women. The results suggest that post-menopausal women, particularly those who experience early menopause, may be at higher risk for developing RA. Further research in this area could provide valuable insights into potential preventive measures and targeted interventions for high-risk individuals.

Tramadol is a synthetic opioid with a central effect from the aminocyclohexanol group, which has two main mechanisms of action, including as a weak agonist of opioid receptors and as a norepinephrine and serotonin reuptake inhibitor. The present study presents a review based on clinical trials designed in 2023. In July 2023, six international databases, including Medline/PubMed, ProQuest, Scopus, EMBASE, Google Scholar, and ISI (Web of Science), were searched and 58 articles were included in the study. The results of most studies showed that tramadol can be used as an analgesic drug, although in some studies it was shown that tramadol is not therapeutically superior in reducing pain compared to other treatments. Also, complications related to this treatment have been reported in some studies. Physicians should consider these factors to prevent drug toxicity, poor pain relief, use disorder in patients, and unpredictable complications. It should be noted that there is not enough evidence to support the long-term effectiveness of tramadol, but this argument also extends to nonopioid and other types of opioid analgesics, and the lack of long-term trials is due to regulatory and ethical issues. Although opioids can cause addiction when used for a long time, tramadol has a reasonable safety profile. According to the patient's condition and the clinical judgment of the medical professional, tramadol can be prescribed for patients, but the consequences of its use must be considered and a personalized treatment algorithm should be selected if the benefits outweigh the risks of the drug.

OBJECTIVE: Several pathological conditions trigger the formation of microvesicles (MVs), including infectious diseases such as COVID-19. The shedding of MVs increases the levels of inflammatory factors (e.g., interleukin-6; IL-6) and ultimately leads to an inflammatory cascade response, while also increasing the procoagulant response. The current study aimed to evaluate the level of circulating MVs and their procoagulant activity as well as the serum level of IL-6 in patients with COVID-19 and healthy controls. In this case-control study, 65 patients with COVID-19 and 30 healthy individuals were sampled after obtaining written informed consent. MVs counting was measured using conjugated CD61, CD45, CD235a, and Annexin-V antibodies. Additionally, the procoagulant activity of MVs and the IL-6 level were estimated using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). RESULTS: The majority of MVs were platelet-derived MVs (PMVs). Patients with COVID-19 had significantly higher levels of MVs, procoagulant MVs, and IL-6 compared to healthy controls (p < 0.001). MVs were significantly correlated with procoagulant MVs, D-Dimer levels, fibrinogen, and IL-6, but not with platelet, lymphocyte, and neutrophil counts. CONCLUSION: Elevated levels of procoagulant MVs and their association with inflammatory and coagulation markers in patients with COVID-19 are suggested as a novel circulatory biomarker to evaluate and predict the procoagulant activity and severity of COVID-19.

Waste tires (WT) are produced in millions of tons per annum and their safe disposal is always a major environmental challenge because of fire hazards and the increasing cost of landfills. WT has high organic matter content that can be converted into fuels and chemicals if suitable technologies can be developed. Herein we report the in situ catalytic pyrolysis of WT using formulated red mud catalyst to produce low sulfur fuel that can be fractionated or can be used without fractionation. The in situ catalytic pyrolysis was conducted at 450-550 °C using formulated red mud catalyst. The yield of pyrolysis liquids ranged from 35 to 40 wt%. The liquid was very rich in limonene and long chain aliphatic hydrocarbons. The catalyst was effective in removing the sulfur compounds in the oil through reactive adsorption desulfurization mechanism. The sulfur species reacted with hematite, calcite, sodium hydroxide, and zinc oxide to form sulfides and were retained in the catalyst. The minimum sulfur content of the catalytic pyrolysis oil was 0.38 wt%. After catalyst regeneration in air through combustion, the catalyst activity was restored, and the catalyst was reused.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of nanoparticles based on the PLGA and biomolecule of lycopene (i.e. NLcp) and exosomes loaded on hydroxyapatite/collagen-based scaffolds (HA/Coll), on human endometrial MSCs (hEnMSCs) differentiation into osteoblast cells. To this end, after synthesizing NLcp and isolating hEnMSC-derived exosomes, and studying their characterizations, HA/Coll scaffold with/without NLcp and exosome was fabricated. In following, the rat skull-defect model was created on 54 male Sprague-Dawley rats (12 weeks old) which were classified into 6 groups [control group (4 healthy rats), negative control group: bone defect without grafting (10 rats), and experimental groups including bone defect grafted with HA/Coll scaffold (10 rats), HA/Coll/NLcp scaffold (10 rats), HA/Coll scaffold + exosome (10 rats), and HA/Coll-NLcp scaffold + exosome (10 rats)]. Finally, the grafted membrane along with its surrounding tissues was removed at 90 days after surgery, to assess the amount of defect repair by Hematoxylin and eosin staining. Moreover, immunohistochemical and X-ray Micro-Computed Tomography (Micro-CT) analyses were performed to assess osteocalcin and mean bone volume fraction (BVF). Based on the results, although, the existence of the exosome in the scaffold network can significantly increase mean BVF compared to HA/Coll scaffold and HA/Coll-NLcp scaffold (2.25-fold and 1.5-fold, respectively). However, the combination of NLcp and exosome indicated more effect on mean BVF; so that the HA/Coll-NLcp scaffold + exosome led to a 15.95 % increase in mean BVF than the HA/Coll scaffold + exosome. Hence, synthesized NLcp in this study can act as a suitable bioactive to stimulate the osteogenic, promotion of cell proliferation and its differentiation when used in the polymer scaffold structure or loaded into polymeric carriers containing the exosome.

Various topical interventions have been described to minimize botulinum neurotoxin-A (BoNT)-induced pain. The purpose of this study is to conduct a systematic review of relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to compare the efficacy of pain relief methods during BoNT injection. PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched using "Botox," "Botulinum," or "BTX." We identified RCTs in which BoNT were injected to eliminate wrinkles. The pain score was the study outcome, and pain reduction method was compared with routine one. The meta-analysis was reported using the PRISMA checklist. The Higgins I(I2) statistical model assessed results heterogeneity. Two thousand one hundred and twenty-three articles were identified, thirteen articles eligible. Two hundred and sixty-two healthy volunteers were performed on these RCTs. Meta-analysis evaluated different methods to ease BoNT injection pain, and these methods significantly improved outcomes by 0.23% (95%CI, 0.11-0.46, p = .000). Subgroup analysis based on injection area showed no significant heterogeneity, but heterogeneity decreased when subgroup analysis based on other methods was done (Cochran's Q test = 115.52, p = .0001, I2 = 87.9%). This meta-analysis confirms the effectiveness of pain relief methods during BoNT injection. Evaluation of different methods showed their effectiveness, but finding the best method requires comparative studies, although the role of pH and EMLA has been proven.

Phosphorus (P) and Ammonium Nitrogen (N) are essential nutrients for plants and environmental stability. However, their excess in water causes eutrophication, damaging aquatic ecosystems. While adsorption is a promising solution, finding affordable and efficient adsorbents remains a challenge. In this study, magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe), and Mg/Fe doped biochars (BC) adsorbents were synthesized, and evaluated for adsorption of individual P and N and a P + N mixture from a solution and wastewater from a wastewater treatment plant. Compared to other adsorbents, Mg/BC showed excellent performance in adsorbing phosphorus (P) and ammonium nitrogen (N) from aqueous solutions. It demonstrated a large adsorption capacity of 64.65 mg/g and 62.50 mg/g from individual P and N solutions, and 30.3 mg/g and 27.67 mg/g from the P and N mixture solution, respectively. In addition, Mg/BC efficiently removed P and N from real-life wastewater. In the real wastewater, P and N removal efficiencies reached 88.30% and 59.36%, respectively. Kinetics analysis revealed that the pseudo-second-order model accurately described the adsorption of phosphorus (P) and ammonium nitrogen (N) in all solutions. The adsorbent followed the monolayer-Langmuir isotherm for N ions and the multilayer-Freundlich isotherm for P, indicating efficient adsorption processes. Thermodynamic experiments indicated that the adsorption of P and N was not only feasible but also occurred spontaneously in a natural manner. This study revealed that the strategic modification of biochar plays a crucial role in advancing effective wastewater treatment technologies designed for nutrient removal.

The utilization of lignin, an abundant and renewable bio-aromatic source, is of significant importance. In this study, lignin oxidation was examined at different temperatures with zirconium oxide (ZrO2)-supported nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co) and bimetallic Ni-Co metal catalysts under different solvents and oxygen pressure. Non-catalytic oxidation reaction produced maximum bio-oil (35.3 wt%), while catalytic oxidation significantly increased the bio-oil yield. The bimetallic catalyst Ni-Co/ZrO2 produced the highest bio-oil yield (67.4 wt%) compared to the monometallic catalyst Ni/ZrO2 (59.3 wt%) and Co/ZrO2 (54.0 wt%). The selectively higher percentage of vanillin, 2-methoxy phenol, acetovanillone, acetosyringone and vanillic acid compounds are found in the catalytic bio-oil. Moreover, it has been observed that the bimetallic Co-Ni/ZrO2 produced a higher amount of vanillin (43.7% and 13.30 wt%) compound. These results demonstrate that the bimetallic Ni-Co/ZrO2 catalyst promotes the selective cleavage of the ether ß-O-4 bond in lignin, leading to a higher yield of phenolic monomer compounds.

PURPOSE: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is the most common type of leishmaniasis in tropical and subtropical areas. This study investigated the trend of CL changes from 2009 to 2022, and predicted the number of leishmaniasis cases until 2024. METHODS: This ecological study was performed on new monthly confirmed CL cases from 2009 to 2022 from the leishmaniasis registration system in southeast Iran. The time series method was used to investigate the trend of changes in CL from 2009 to 2022. SARIMA model was run to predict the number of leishmaniasis cases until 2024 by controlling the effect of climatic variables on the disease process. RESULTS: The analysis showed a significant increase in CL cases in 2015 and from 2021 to 2022. The minimum number of registered cases was observed in 2018, with 81 cases. The maximum number was also observed in 2021, with 318 patients. The leishmaniasis cases decreased from January to June and increased from July to December. According to the results of SARIMA (1, 0, 0) (1, 0, 0) multivariate analysis, the temperature in log 12 has a significant negative correlation with the number of leishmaniasis cases. This model predicted a decreasing trend in leishmaniasis cases until 2024. CONCLUSION: The southeast region of Fars province is one of the hyper-endemic regions of the disease, and it is prone to periodic outbreaks. An active surveillance system must investigate the CL incidence trend and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions to prevent the occurrence of new outbrea.

Feedstocks such as coal, biomass, plastics, and their blends have the potential to serve as fuels for the thermochemical conversion process owing to their relatively high calorific values. Nevertheless, the relative proportion of these feedstock blends has a pivotal influence over the overall energy conversion efficiency. Consequently, conducting a comprehensive study to optimize the blend proportion becomes crucial in order to obtain an optimal fuel. The study aims to investigate the thermochemical characterization and kinetics of blends composed of lignite coal, southern pine biomass, and municipal waste plastic blend to optimize the blend proportion. This optimization has been achieved through an analysis of 12 distinct blends, considering factors such as combustion reaction kinetics, combustion stability, and comprehensive combustion indices. The reaction kinetics, including activation energy, pre-exponential factor, and reaction order, were estimated using various methods, including Vyazovkin, Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose, Flynn-Wall-Ozawa, Master-plot, and multidistributed activation energy methods. The investigation revealed that increasing the biomass content within the blends enhances both the combustion stability and combustion performance. The multidistributed activation energy model exhibited a good fit with both the experimental thermogravimetric and the derivative thermogravimetric curves, achieving linear regression fitness values of 0.99 and 0.95, respectively. To showcase the viability of these blends as energy generation feedstock, the optimal blend comprised of 60% biomass, 10% coal, and 30% municipal waste plastic blend, possessing the lowest activation energy (110 kJ/mol), was employed as the feedstock for the fluidized bed oxy-steam gasification process. The gasification process resulted in a synthetic gas consisting of 47.79 mol % H2, 27.96 mol % CO, 5.85 mol % CH4, and 18.38 mol % CO2 (nitrogen-free basis) with a cold gas efficiency of 72.88%. The findings of this study can offer valuable insights into global industries engaged in the thermochemical conversion of solid waste materials.

Recently, efforts have been made to recognize the precise reason(s) for transplant failure and the process of rejection utilizing the molecular signature. Most transplant recipients do not appreciate the unknown length of survival of allogeneic grafts with the existing standard of care. Two noteworthy immunological pathways occur during allogeneic transplant rejection. A nonspecific innate immune response predominates in the early stages of the immune reaction, and allogeneic antigens initiate a donor-specific adaptive reaction. Though the adaptive response is the major cause of allograft rejection, earlier pro-inflammatory responses that are part of the innate immune response are also regarded as significant in graft loss. The onset of the innate and adaptive immune response causes chronic and acute transplant rejection. Currently employed immunosuppressive medications have shown little or no influence on chronic rejection and, as a result, on overall long-term transplant survival. Furthermore, long-term pharmaceutical immunosuppression is associated with side effects, toxicity, and an increased risk of developing diseases, both infectious and metabolic. As a result, there is a need for the development of innovative donor-specific immunosuppressive medications to regulate the allorecognition pathways that induce graft loss and to reduce the side effects of immunosuppression. Efferocytosis is an immunomodulatory mechanism with fast and efficient clearance of apoptotic cells (ACs). As such, AC therapy strategies have been suggested to limit transplant-related sequelae. Efferocytosis-based medicines/treatments can also decrease the use of immunosuppressive drugs and have no detrimental side effects. Thus, this review aims to investigate the impact of efferocytosis on transplant rejection/tolerance and identify approaches using AC clearance to increase transplant viability.

Background: Cyclophosphamide (CP) is an anticancer drug that acts as an alkylation agent after metabolism in the liver. CP has toxic effects on the body's cells, especially the reproductive system's function, and causes infertility. Moreover, medicinal plants have few side effects and are psychologically acceptable to patients. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the impact of Ephedra pachyclada hydroalcoholic extract (EPHE) on ovarian tissue and hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis in rats treated with CP. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 48 adult female Wistar rats (180-200 gr, 9-10 wk) were randomly assigned to 6 experimental groups (n = 8/each): (a) control; (b) sham; (c) CP; (d) CP+250 mg/kg EPHE; (e) CP+500 mg/kg EPHE; (f) CP+1000 mg/kg EPHE. On the 29th day of the experiment, serum was collected; serum concentration of the luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, estrogen, progesterone, and antioxidant activity were measured. The number of ovarian follicles were also counted. Results: In the CP groups, serum concentrations of follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone significantly increased, and estrogen and progesterone significantly decreased (p ≤ 0.05). EPHE significantly compensated for the complications caused by CP and 1000 mg/kg had the greatest effect. Antioxidant reduction by CP was significantly enhanced by EPHE, especially at higher doses (p ≤ 0.05). The number of primordial, primary, secondary, and Graafian follicles showed a significant decrease in CP groups and EPHE groups showed a significant increase compared to the CP. EPHE showed that the concentration of 1000 mg/kg was more effective than other doses (p ≤ 0.05). Conclusion: In addition to proving the effect of EPHE on the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, our investigation showed antioxidant properties, which can be an effective factor in CP-treated rats.

Efficient treatment of nutrient-rich wastewater is of paramount importance for protecting the ecosystem. In this work, an efficient, abundant, and eco-friendly adsorbent was derived from biochar and employed for phosphorus (P) adsorption. The key factors influencing the P removal efficiency of the activated biochar, including P concentration, pH, dosage, temperature, adsorption time, and influence of co-existing ion type, were investigated. Maximum P adsorption percentage (100%) was obtained with 10 mg/L and zinc chloride activated biochar (BC-Zn) compared to the other activated biochars. Results show that by increasing the P concentration from 5 to 200 mg/L, the phosphorus adsorption capacity increases from 0.13 to 10.4 mg/g biochar. Isotherms and kinetic studies further show that the P adsorption follows the Langmuir and quasi-second-order kinetic models. The mechanistic investigation demonstrated that P adsorption occurred by precipitation reaction. Furthermore, P desorption has been studied at different time intervals to understand the P release rate after adsorption.

Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) is one of the public health concerns that can result in a loss of sensory or motor function in the areas in which injured and non-injured nerves come together. Up until now, there has been no optimized therapy for complete nerve regeneration after PNI. Exosome-based therapies are an emerging and effective therapeutic strategy for promoting nerve regeneration and functional recovery. Exosomes, as natural extracellular vesicles, contain bioactive molecules for intracellular communications and nervous tissue function, which could overcome the challenges of cell-based therapies. Furthermore, the bioactivity and ability of exosomes to deliver various types of agents, such as proteins and microRNA, have made exosomes a potential approach for neurotherapeutics. However, the type of cell origin, dosage, and targeted delivery of exosomes still pose challenges for the clinical translation of exosome therapeutics. In this review, we have focused on Schwann cell and mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-derived exosomes in nerve tissue regeneration. Also, we expressed the current understanding of MSC-derived exosomes related to nerve regeneration and provided insights for developing a cell-free MSC therapeutic strategy for nerve injury.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a serious problem with a high prevalence worldwide. The weak capability of the spinal cord for regeneration in association with upregulation of inflammatory factors is two key obstacles against a full SCI repair. Curcumin is a natural substance with anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects. Here, we have used a combined strategy using stem cells and hybrid hydrogel scaffolds loaded with curcumin for SCI repair. Curcumin-loaded PLGA nanoparticles were prepared, characterized, and encapsulated into gelatin/alginate hydrogel scaffolds, which were then seeded by human endometrial stem cells (hEnSCs). The resulting construct was studied using in vitro and in vivo experiments on rat models. DLS, SEM, Zeta potential, and FTIR data confirmed the successful addition of curcumin to PLGA nanoparticles. SEM analyses indicated the successful addition of curcumin-loaded nanoparticles into the gelatin/alginate scaffold, as well as the adherence of the seeded EnSCs. Based on the results, the prepared constructs not only allowed the controlled release of curcumin but also could support the survival and growth of hEnSCs. Based on the results of BBB and histological experiments, the highest BBB score was related to the combined strategy, consistent with histological outcomes, in which our hEnSC-seeded gelatin/alginate scaffold containing curcumin-loaded nanoparticles led to improved structures of the white and gray matters in the SCI site, being indicative of the superior nerve fiber regeneration, compared to other studied groups. These results indicate the efficiency of the proposed method for SCI repair and broaden the scope for subsequent studies on spinal cord regeneration.

Background: Cyclophosphamide (CP) has clinical applications in treating diverse malignancies and autoimmune disorders; at the same time, it also has harmful effects on the body tissues, particularly the genitals. The most significant side effects of CP are changing the reproductive system's function and infertility. Objective: This study determines the Ephedra hydroalcoholic extract (EP) role on testicular tissue and the pituitary-gonadal axis in CP-treated male rats. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 48 adult Wistar rats were separated into 6 groups (n = 8/each): control, sham, CP recipients, and CP recipients with gavage-fed EP (250, 500, and 1000 mg/kg). On the 29th day, the blood of the weighed animals' was drawn from their heart, and serum concentrations of follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, and testosterone were measured. After preparing testicular tissue segments, cells were counted. Results: While CP decreased follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, and testosterone levels (p < 0.05), the use of EP changed them and even reached the control. Serum gonadotropin-releasing hormone increased significantly in all EP groups compared to the control and CP groups. Compared to the control, a significant decrease in total antioxidant capacity and plasma glutathione peroxidase was observed in the CP groups. EP (all doses) significantly increased their concentration compared to the CP group (p < 0.05); significant reduction in serum total oxidant status and malondialdehyde in CP groups changed by EP (p < 0.05). Although CP's role on spermatogonia counts (57.5 ± 5.2 in CP, 67.1 ± 6.0 in control), higher doses of EP had no significant effect on this but did affect spermatocyte and spermatid cells count. Conclusion: Due to its antioxidant characteristics, EP mitigated the effects of CP on the investigated parameters in rats.

Nerve guide conduits (NGCs) have been shown to be less efficient than nerve autografts in peripheral nerve regeneration. To address this issue, we developed for the first time a novel tissue-engineered nerve guide conduit structure encapsulated with human endometrial stem cell (EnSC) derived exosomes, which promoted nerve regeneration in rat sciatic nerve defects. In this study, we initially indicated the long-term efficacy and safety impacts of newly designed double layered SF/PLLA nerve guide conduits. Then the regeneration effects of SF/PLLA nerve guide conduits containing exosomes derived from human EnSCs were evaluated in rat sciatic nerve defects. The human EnSC derived exosomes were isolated from the supernatant of human EnSC cultures and characterized. Subsequently, the human EnSC derived exosomes were encapsulated in constructed NGCs by fibrin gel. For in vivo studies, entire 10 mm peripheral nerve defects were generated in rat sciatic nerves and restored with NGC encapsulated with human EnSC derived exosomes (Exo-NGC group), nerve guide conduits, and autografts. The efficiency of the NGCs encapsulated with human EnSCs derived exosomes in assisting peripheral nerve regeneration was investigated and compared with other groups. The in vivo results demonstrated that encapsulated human EnSC derived exosomes in NGC (Exo-NGC) significantly benefitted nerve regeneration based on motor function, sensory reaction, and electrophysiological results. Furthermore, immunohistochemistry with histopathology results showed the formation of regenerated nerve fibers, along with blood vessels that newly were developed, as a result of the exosome functions in the Exo-NGC group. These outcomes illustrated that the newly designed core-shell SF/PLLA nerve guide conduit encapsulated with human EnSC derived exosomes enhanced the regeneration process of axons and improved the functional recovery of rat sciatic nerve defects. So, encapsulated human EnSC-derived exosomes in a core-shell SF/PLLA nerve guide conduit are a potential therapeutic cell-free treatment for peripheral nerve defects.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Oral cancer is now a top priority for non-communicable illnesses and universal health care plans, according to the WHO. There is no general estimate of the incidence of oral cavity cancer in Iran, despite multiple investigations. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the age-standardized incidence rate (ASR) of oral cavity cancers in Iran. METHOD: In accordance with the MOOSE (Meta-analyses of Observational Studies in Epidemiology) Checklist recommendations, this systematic review was conducted. PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Embase, Scopus, ProQuest, and Google Scholar were used as the international databases for the systematic literature search, while SID (Scientific Information Database), Magiran and element were used as the Iranian databases. The heterogeneity of the research will be evaluated by means of the inverse variance and Cochran Q tests, along with random-effect models. It was determined what caused the heterogeneity using a meta-regression model. By eliminating experiments one at a time, sensitivity analysis was used. The meta-analysis was corrected utilizing the Trim-and-fill method due to the identification of noteworthy publication bias via the Egger's test and asymmetry of the funnel plot. RESULTS: This research incorporated a total of 22 journal articles. The pooled ASR of oral cavity cancer for males and females was estimated at 1.96 (95% CI: 1.65-2.26) (Q statistic = 1118.09, df = 25, p < .0001, I2 = 97.8%), and 1.46 (95% CI: 1.14-1.77) (Q statistic = 2576.99, df = 26, p < .0001, I2 = 99.0%), respectively. According to the funnel plots and Egger's test, there is no evidence of publication bias in studies reporting on males (bias = 1.3220, 95% CI: -3.9571, 6.6012, p = .610), but for ASR in females, Egger's test was significant (bias = -7.6366, 95% CI: 2.2141, 13.05904, p = .008). Based on Trim-and-fill methods, overall ASR corrected in females was estimated to be 1.36 (95% CI: 1.05%-1.66%). CONCLUSION: Iran's oral cavity cancer incidence was lower than the global average, but owing to variables including an aging population, a rise in life expectancy, and exposure to risk factors like smoking, we anticipate an increasing trend.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Ziziphus jujuba (Z. jujuba) leaf hydroalcoholic extract on the prevention/treatment of kidney stones. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-six male Wistar rats were randomly divided into six groups: control, Sham (kidney stone induction (KSI) by ethylene glycol 1% + ammonium chloride 0.25% through drinking water for 28 days), Prevention groups 1, 2 (KSI and Z. jujuba leaf (250 and 500 mg/kg, respectively) through gavage for 28 days), and Treatment groups 1, 2 (KSI and Z. jujuba leaf (250 and 500 mg/kg, respectively) from the 15th day). On the 29th day, the rats' 24-hour urine was assessed, the animals were weighed, and blood samples were taken. Finally, after nephrectomy and weighing the kidneys, tissue sections were prepared to examine the number of calcium oxalate crystals and tissue changes. RESULTS: The results indicated a significant increase in kidney weight and index, tissue changes, and the number of calcium oxalate crystals in the Sham group compared to the control; using Z. jujuba leaf considerably reduced them in experimental groups compared to the Sham. Body weight decreased in the Sham and experimental groups (except the prevention 2 group) compared to the control, while this observed reduction was lower in all experimental groups compared to the Sham. The mean urinary calcium, uric acid, creatinine, and serum creatinine in Sham and experimental groups (except the prevention 2 group) indicated a substantial increase compared to the control and decreased significantly in all experimental groups compared to the Sham. CONCLUSION: Hydroalcoholic extract of Z. jujuba leaf is effective in the reduction of calcium oxalate crystals forming, and its most effective dose was 500mg/kg.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship between metabolic syndrome and its components with nephrolithiasis. METHODS: In current study, 4,901 individuals from the PERSIAN (Prospective Epidemiological Research Studies in IrAN) Kavar cohort study were included. Metabolic syndrome was defined according to the ATP III criteria (2005 revision). The nephrolithiasis was assessed using a structured questionnaire, and ultrasound findings were reviewed in subjects who reported positive history of nephrolithiasis. We applied logistic regression to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS: The prevalence of nephrolithiasis and metabolic syndrome was 28.5% and 40.91%, respectively. Almost 31% of the patients with metabolic syndrome had a history of nephrolithiasis. Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed a positive association between metabolic syndrome and nephrolithiasis (OR= 1.30, 95% CI: 1.14-1.49, P<.001) after adjustment age, sex, ethnicity, physical activity, smoking status, and alcohol intake. Furthermore, the relation was higher for elders aged 50 years or more (P for interaction= .016) and Turk Nomad participants (P for interaction= 0.044) than the others. There was also a positive independent association between hypertension (OR=1.29, 95% CI: 1.12-1.48, P<.001) and hypertriglyceridemia (OR= 1.15, 95% CI: 1.01-1.31, P=.033) with nephrolithiasis. CONCLUSION: In this large sample study, we demonstrate a weak positive association between metabolic syndrome, hypertension, and hypertriglyceridemia with nephrolithiasis.
