RESUMEN

We demonstrate a full C-band wavelength-tunable mode-locked fiber laser with a repetition rate of 250 MHz, representing the highest repetition rate for C-band tunable mode-locked lasers thus far to the best of our knowledge. The polarization-maintaining fiber-based Fabry-Perot cavity enables a fundamental repetition rate of 250 MHz with a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror as a mode-locker. We observed a stable and single soliton mode-locking state with wide tunability of the center wavelength from 1505 to 1561 nm by adjusting the incident angle of a bandpass filter inside the cavity. The wavelength-tunable high-repetition-rate mode-locked laser covering the full C-band is expected to be a compelling source for many frequency-comb-based applications, including high-precision optical metrology, broadband absorption spectroscopy, and broadband optical frequency synthesizers.

Background: The rise in telecommuting or non-face-to-face work owing to the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has fueled conversations regarding the "right to disconnect." Although evidence suggests that receiving work-related communications through telecommunication devices outside of work hours may lead to various symptoms and illnesses, limited research has been undertaken on these symptoms. This study therefore aims to investigate the correlation between receiving work communications through telecommunication devices after work hours and the occurrence of work-related headaches and eyestrain in full-time, non-shift white-collar workers. Methods: This study used data from the 6th Korean Working Conditions Survey. The frequency of using telecommunication devices for work purposes outside of working hours was divided into five categories: "Every day," "Several times a week," "Several times a month," "Rarely," and "Never." Work-related headaches and eyestrain were categorized based on a "yes" or "no" response to the survey questions. Descriptive statistics, χ2 tests, and multiple logistic regression analyses were performed using SPSS 27.0. Results: After adjusting for sex, age, income level, education, occupation, workplace size, work hours, and sleep disorders, the odds ratio (OR) of work-related headaches and eyestrain based on frequency of telecommunication device usage were as follows: "rarely" (OR: 1.292; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.111-1.503), "several times a month" (OR: 1.551; 95% CI: 1.249-1.926), "several times a week" (OR: 1.474; 95% CI: 1.217-1.784), and "every day" (OR: 1.548; 95% CI: 1.321-1.813). Conclusions: Employees who use telecommunication devices for work after regular hours are more susceptible to experiencing work-related headaches and eyestrain compared to those who do not. However, there is a dearth of research examining the physical and mental health impacts of using telecommunication devices for after-hours work. Furthermore, the existing preventative measures in Korea are insufficient. Consequently, it is imperative to develop effective measures and conduct additional research to address this issue.

A linear-type wavelength-tunable all-polarization-maintaining fiber mode-locked laser is proposed for the first time, to our knowledge, and is implemented with an Er-doped fiber and polarization-maintaining fiber components. The tuning range of the center wavelength is from 1533.7 nm to 1565.6 nm. The linear-type configuration makes the proposed laser simpler and more compact, allowing it to achieve the highest repetition rate of 126.5 MHz among C-band wavelength-tunable mode-locked lasers due to its short cavity length. Also, its polarization-maintaining fiber components provide reliable operating robustness. The significant wavelength tunability and high repetition rate of the proposed laser can be expected to make it an attractive resource for various applications, including optical communications, broadband spectroscopic LIDAR, and high-precision ranging.

The importance of dimensional metrology has gradually emerged from fundamental research to high-technology industries. In the era of the fourth industrial revolution, absolute distance measurements are required to cope with various applications, such as unmanned vehicles, intelligent robots, and positioning sensors for smart factories. In such cases, the size, weight, power, and cost (SWaP-C) should essentially be restricted. In this paper, sub-100 nm precision distance measurements based on an amplitude-modulated continuous-wave laser (AMCW) with an all-fiber photonic microwave mixing technique is proposed and realized potentially to satisfy SWaP-C requirements. Target distances of 0.879 m and 8.198 m were measured by detecting the phase delay of 15 GHz modulation frequencies. According to our measurement results, the repeatability could reach 43 nm at an average time of 1 s, a result not previously achieved by conventional AMCW laser distance measurement methods. Moreover, the performance by the proposed method in terms of Allan deviation is competitive with most frequency-comb-based absolute distance measurement methods, even with a simple configuration. Because the proposed method has a simple configuration such that it can be easily utilized and demonstrated on a chip-scale platform using CMOS-compatible silicon photonics, it is expected to herald new possibilities, leading to the practical realization of a fully integrated chip-scale LIDAR system.

Laser interferometry serves a fundamental role in science and technology, assisting precision metrology and dimensional length measurement. During the past decade, laser frequency combs-a coherent optical-microwave frequency ruler over a broad spectral range with traceability to time-frequency standards-have contributed pivotal roles in laser dimensional metrology with ever-growing demands in measurement precision. Here we report spectrally resolved laser dimensional metrology via a free-running soliton frequency microcomb, with nanometric-scale precision. Spectral interferometry provides information on the optical time-of-flight signature, and the large free-spectral range and high coherence of the microcomb enable tooth-resolved and high-visibility interferograms that can be directly read out with optical spectrum instrumentation. We employ a hybrid timing signal from comb-line homodyne, microcomb, and background amplified spontaneous emission spectrally resolved interferometry-all from the same spectral interferogram. Our combined soliton and homodyne architecture demonstrates a 3-nm repeatability over a 23-mm nonambiguity range achieved via homodyne interferometry and over 1000-s stability in the long-term precision metrology at the white noise limits.

When manufacturing glass substrates for display devices, especially for large-sized ones, the time-varying spatial temperature gradient or distribution on the samples is remarkably observed. It causes serious degradation of thickness measurement accuracy due to the combination of thermally expanded thickness and temperature-dependent refractive index. To prevent or minimize the degradation in thickness measurement accuracy, the temperature distribution over an entire glass substrate has to be known in real time in synchronization with the thickness measurement to specify the refractive index of the sample based on an exact mathematical model of the temperature-dependent refractive index. In this paper, a measurement method for determining the thickness profile of a large glass substrate regardless of precise measurement of temperature distribution and the mathematical model of the refractive index was demonstrated. The widely used glass substrates with nominal thicknesses of 0.6 mm and 1.3 mm were measured at room and high temperatures. Through comparison of thickness profiles of hot glass substrates having large temperature gradients and those estimated through thermal expansion of thickness profiles measured at room temperature, it was confirmed that the proposed method can provide highly reliable thickness measurement results under such challenging conditions, unlike simple calculation from the optical thickness using the well-known refractive index.

We report a multi-channel optical frequency synthesizer developed to generate extremely stable continuous-wave lasers directly out of the optical comb of an Er-doped fiber oscillator. Being stabilized to a high-finesse cavity with a fractional frequency stability of 3.8 × 10-15 at 0.1 s, the comb-rooted synthesizer produces multiple optical frequencies of ultra-narrow linewidth of 1.0 Hz at 1 s concurrently with an output power of tens of mW per each channel. Diode-based stimulated emission by injection locking is a key mechanism that allows comb frequency modes to sprout up with sufficient power amplification but no loss of original comb frequency stability. Channel frequencies are individually selectable with a 0.1 GHz increment over the entire comb bandwidth spanning 4.25 THz around a 1550 nm center wavelength. A series of out-of-loop test results is discussed to demonstrate that the synthesizer is able to provide stable optical frequencies with the potential for advancing diverse ultra-precision applications such as optical clocks comparison, atomic line spectroscopy, photonic microwaves generation, and coherent optical telecommunications.

A prototype laser distance interferometer is demonstrated by incorporating the frequency comb of a femtosecond laser for mass-production of optoelectronic devices such as flat panel displays and solar cell devices. This comb-referenced interferometer uses four different wavelengths simultaneously to enable absolute distance measurement with the capability of comprehensive evaluation of the measurement stability and uncertainty. The measurement result reveals that the stability reaches 3.4 nm for a 3.8 m distance at 1.0 s averaging, which further reduces to 0.57 nm at 100 s averaging with a fractional stability of 1.5 × 10(-10). The uncertainty is estimated to be in a 10(-8) level when distance is measured in air due to the inevitable ambiguity in estimating the refractive index, but it can be enhanced to a 10(-10) level in vacuum.

Femtosecond lasers allow for simultaneous detection of multiple absorption lines of a specimen over a broad spectral range of infrared or visible light with a single spectroscopic measurement. Here, we present an 8-THz bandwidth, 0.5-GHz resolution scheme of Fourier-transform spectroscopy using an Er-doped fiber femtosecond laser. A resolving power of 1.6 × 10(4) about a 1560-nm center wavelength is achieved by sweeping the pulse repetition rate of the light source on a fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer configured to capture interferograms with a 0.02-fs temporal sampling accuracy through a well-stabilized 60-m unbalance arm length. A dual-servo mechanism is realized by combining a mechanical linear stage with an electro-optic modulator (EOM) within the fiber laser cavity, enabling stable sweeping control of the pulse repetition rate over a 1.0-MHz scan range with 0.4-Hz steps with reference to the Rb clock. Experimental results demonstrate that the P-branch lines of the H(13)CN reference cell can be observed with a signal-to-noise ratio reaching 350 for the most intense line.

A two-color scheme of heterodyne laser interferometer is devised for distance measurements with the capability of real-time compensation of the refractive index of the ambient air. A fundamental wavelength of 1555 nm and its second harmonic wavelength of 777.5 nm are generated, with stabilization to the frequency comb of a femtosecond laser, to provide fractional stability of the order of 3.0 × 10(-12) at 1 s averaging. Achieved uncertainty is of the order of 10(-8) in measuring distances of 2.5 m without sensing the refractive index of air in adverse environmental conditions.

A multi-wavelength interferometer utilizing the frequency comb of a femtosecond laser as the wavelength ruler is tested for its capability of ultra-precision positioning for machine axis control. The interferometer uses four different wavelengths phase-locked to the frequency comb and then determines the absolute position through a multi-channel scheme of detecting interference phases in parallel so as to enable fast, precise and stable measurements continuously over a few meters of axis-travel. Test results show that the proposed interferometer proves itself as a potential candidate of absolute-type position transducer needed for next-generation ultra-precision machine axis control, demonstrating linear errors of less than 61.9 nm in peak-to-valley over a 1-meter travel with an update rate of 100 Hz when compared to an incremental-type He-Ne laser interferometer.

We report a space radiation test performed on a semiconductor-type saturable absorber (SA) for its use in outer space as a key mode-locking component of fiber-based femtosecond pulse lasers. Gamma-ray effects on the nonlinear transmission behavior of the SA were evaluated by configuring a pump-probe experiment with femtosecond light pulses. Test results revealed that when the total ionizing dose of gamma-ray exposure reaches 120 krad, the SA encounters a sudden failure with its modulation depth and saturation fluence deteriorating from 11% to 6% and 40 to 110 µJ/cm2, respectively. On the other hand, no notable degradation was observed in its temporal response of absorption recovery.

We report a test operation of an Er-doped fibre femtosecond laser which was conducted for the first time in outer space. The fibre-based ultrashort pulse laser payload was designed to meet space-use requirements, undergone through ground qualification tests and finally launched into a low-earth orbit early in 2013. Test results obtained during a one-year mission lifetime confirmed stable mode-locking all the way through although the radiation induced attenuation (RIA) in the Er-doped gain fibre caused an 8.6% reduction in the output power. This successful test operation would help facilitate diverse scientific and technological applications of femtosecond lasers in space and earth atmosphere in the near future.

This research focuses on four cases of patients having undergone eximer laser photorefractive surgery who were diagnosed with adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis during the postoperative period and who later developed epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC)-like keratitis. Two of the patients had undergone laser-assisted subepithelial keratectomy (LASEK), one had undergone laser in situ keratomileusis and one had photorefractive keratectomy. After the surgery adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis and recurrent late-developing EKC-like keratitis were observed in the patients. Recurrent late-developing EKC-like keratitis occurred in one of the patients, who had received LASEK as many as three times. The others had only one or two episodes.The corneal infiltrates of keratitis mainly occurred in the central cornea. Successful resolution of recurrent late-developing EKC-like keratitis was achieved through the use of topical steroids without sequelae and the final best-corrected visual acuity was as good as the base line. These keratitis infiltrates have been presumed to represent an immune response to the suspected adenoviral antigens deposited in corneal stroma during the primary adenoviral infection. Previous reports argued that patients with a history of adenoviral ketatoconjunctivitis were succeptible to adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis becoming reactivated; however, in our research, our patients had their first adenoviral infections after the eximer laser photorefractive surgery and reactivation was confirmed. We recommend that attention be paid to adenoviral infection after laser refractive operations, because these patients seem to have more frequent recurrences.

BACKGROUND: In TB outbreaks, detecting active cases is the key step in stopping transmission of the disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of high-resolution CT (HRCT) scanning of the chest in the investigation of a TB outbreak that developed in a cohort of 92 soldiers in the South Korean army. METHODS: Outbreak investigation, including tuberculin skin test (TST), QuantiFERON TB Gold In-Tube (QFT) test, and simple chest radiograph (CXR), was performed. For participants with any abnormal findings in these tests, HRCT scanning was done. Active pulmonary TB was diagnosed based on sputum studies or HRCT scan findings. In addition, participants with positive results in both TST and QFT were treated as having a latent TB infection (LTBI). TST and QFT were repeated in participants with a positive result in one of these tests. CXR was repeated in all participants at 3 and 6 months of follow-up. RESULTS: Eighty-seven participants completed the study protocol. Among them, 18 active TB cases were diagnosed. Nine of these had normal CXR, but had lesions that were suggestive of active TB on HRCT scan. Twenty-two participants with normal HRCT scans and positive results with TST and QFT at initial investigation were treated as LTBI. Among 13 participants with normal CXR and positive results in either TST or QFT, nine completed a 3-month investigation. All but one of nine participants revealed positive results in both tests. CONCLUSION: Inclusion of HRCT scanning in the outbreak investigation of TB may be helpful in differentiating active TB from LTBI more reliably.
