RESUMEN

This study examined the effect of combining visual and olfactory cues to attract oriental fruit flies (OFFs). Six different colored light-emitting diodes (LEDs) served as a visual attractant and methyl eugenol served as olfactory bait to lure male flies. An internet of things (IoT)-based pest monitoring system, consisting of sensor nodes, a gateway, and automatic counting traps, was deployed in the field to automatically collect environmental data and pest counts. The results of the calibrated experiments indicated that green, yellow, or red LEDs exhibited better performance in attracting flies than white, purple, or blue LEDs or no LEDs. With an accurate combination of visual and olfactory cues, the proposed IoT-based pest monitoring system may be an effective tool in agricultural pest management, given its advantages for efficiently capturing OFFs in a labor and time saving manner, providing accurate information regarding increases in pest populations, and enabling long-term, real-time data collection.

INTRODUCTION: Myxomatous mitral valve degeneration (MMVD) is an acquired heart disease which sometimes result in pulmonary oedema and left atrial rupture. In previous reports, left atrial rupture has been non-surgically controlled and its prognosis investigated. There is, however, no report concerning surgically treated left atrial rupture with mitral valvuloplasty and follow-up results. OBJECTIVES: This report aimed to develop a surgical strategy for a case of left atrial rupture caused by MMVD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three dogs were presented at a private hospital for surgical treatment of MMVD. All three dogs had a previous history of left atrial rupture due to MMVD. The left atrium rapture was diagnosed from indicating that characteristics of the drained pericardial effusion consistent with blood. Mitral valvuloplasty was performed in all dogs using an extracorporeal circulation machine, and the surgical procedure was modified according to each case. In cases with severe adhesion between the pericardial and left atrial appendage, suturing of the left atrial appendage was performed strategically. Additionally, in cases with severe hypotension caused by left atrial rupture, cardiopulmonary bypass was started as soon as possible during the surgical procedure. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Since the haemodynamics of all dogs had improved, and the owner reported no cardiac-related clinical signs, all drugs were withdrawn 3 months after surgery. Since left atrial rupture due to MMVD can cause hypotension, cardiopulmonary bypass should be started as soon as possible during the surgical procedure to maintain the blood pressure and suturing of the left atrial appendage should be performed strategically.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the accuracy of deep learning methods applied to seizure video data, in discriminating individual semiologic features of dystonia and emotion in epileptic seizures. METHODS: A dataset of epileptic seizure videos was used from patients explored with stereo-EEG for focal pharmacoresistant epilepsy. All patients had hyperkinetic (HKN) seizures according to ILAE definition. Presence or absence of (1) dystonia and (2) emotional features in each seizure was documented by an experienced clinician. A deep learning multi-stream model with appearance and skeletal keypoints, face and body information, using graph convolutional neural networks, was used to test discrimination of dystonia and emotion. Classification accuracy was assessed using a leave-one-subject-out analysis. RESULTS: We studied 38 HKN seizure videos in 19 patients. By visual analysis based on ILAE criteria, 9/19 patients were considered to have dystonia and 9/19 patients were considered to have emotional signs. Two patients had both dystonia and emotional signs. Applying the deep learning multistream model, spatiotemporal features of facial appearance showed best accuracy for emotion detection (F1 score 0.84), while skeletal keypoint detection performed best for dystonia (F1 score 0.83). SIGNIFICANCE: Here, we investigated deep learning of video data for analyzing individual semiologic features of dystonia and emotion in hyperkinetic seizures. Automated classification of individual semiologic features is possible and merits further study.

Due to the complexity of socio-economic-related issues, people thought of housing market as a chaotic nucleus situated at the intersection of neighboring sciences. It has been known that the dependence of house features on the residential property value can be estimated employing the well-established hedonic regression analysis method in teams of location characteristic, neighborhood characteristic and structure characteristic. However, to further assess the roles of urban infrastructures in housing markets, we proposed a new kind of volatility measure for house prices utilizing the Lie symmetry analysis of quantum theory based on Schrödinger equation, mainly focusing on the effects of transportation systems and public parks on residential property values. Based on the municipal open government data regularly collected for four cities, including Boston, Milwaukee, Taipei and Tokyo, and all spatial sampling sites were featured by United States Geological Survey (USGS) National Map, transportation and park were modelled as perturbations to the quantum states generated by the feature space in response to the environmental amenities with different spatial extents. In an attempt to ascertain the intrinsic impact of the location-dependent price information obtained, the similarity functions associated with the Schrödinger equation were considered to facilitate revealing the city amenities capitalizing into house prices. By examining the spatial spillover phenomena of house prices in the four cities investigated, it was found that the mass transit systems and the public green lands possessed the infinitesimal generators of Lie point symmetries Y2 and Y5, respectively. Compared statistically with the common performance criteria, including mean absolute error (MAE), mean squared error (MSE) and, root mean squared error (RMSE) obtained by hedonic pricing model, the Lie symmetry analysis of the Schrödinger equation approach developed herein was successfully carried out. The invariant-theoretical characterizations of economics-related phenomena are consonant with the observed residential property values of the cities internationally, ultimately leading to develop a new perspective in the global financial architecture.

An efficiency droop in GaN-based light-emitting diodes (LED) was characterized by examining its general thermophysical parameters. An effective suppression of emission degradation afforded by the introduction of InGaN/GaN heterobarrier structures in the active region was attributable to an increase in the capture cross-section ratios. The Debye temperatures and the electron-phonon interaction coupling coefficients were obtained from temperature-dependent current-voltage measurements of InGaN/GaN multiple-quantum-well LEDs over a temperature range from 20 to 300 K. It was found that the Debye temperature of the LEDs was modulated by the InN molar fraction in the heterobarriers. As far as the phonons involved in the electron-phonon scattering process are concerned, the average number of phonons decreases with the Debye temperature, and the electron-phonon interaction coupling coefficients phenomenologically reflect the nonradiative transition rates. We can use the characteristic ratio of the Debye temperature to the coupling coefficient (DCR) to assess the efficiency droop phenomenon. Our investigation showed that DCR is correlated to quantum efficiency (QE). The light emission results exhibited the high and low QEs to be represented by the high and low DCRs associated with low and high injection currents, respectively. The DCR can be envisioned as a thermophysical marker of LED performance, not only for efficiency droop characterization but also for heterodevice structure optimization.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) constitute a great promise for regenerative therapy, but these cells are difficultly recovered in large amounts. A potent alternative is the stromal vascular fraction (SVF), non-cultured MSCs, separated from adipose tissue (AT). We aim to evaluate AT harvesting site effect on the SVF cells' quantity and quality in dogs. Subcutaneous abdominal fat, falciform ligament and peri-ovarian fat were sampled. After SVF isolation, the trypan blue exclusion test and a hemocytometer were used to assess the cell viability and cellular yield. SVF cells were labeled for four surface antigenic markers, clusters of differentiation CD90, CD44, CD29, and CD45, and then examined by flow cytometry. Semi-quantitative RT-PCR was used to evaluate the gene expression of the former markers in addition to OCT-4 and CD34. SVF cells in the peri-ovarian AT recorded the highest viability% (99.63 ± 0.2%), as well as a significantly higher cellular yield (36.87 ± 19.6 × 106 viable cells/gm fat, p < 0.001) and a higher expression of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells AD-MSCs surface markers than that of other sites. SVF cells from the peri-ovarian site revealed a higher expression of MSC markers (CD90, CD44, and CD29) and OCT-4 compared to the other sites, with weak CD45 and CD34 expressions. The positive OCT-4 expression demonstrated the pluripotency of SVF cells isolated from different sites. To conclude, the harvesting site is a strong determinant of SVF cells' quantity and quality, and the peri-ovarian site could be the best AT sampling site in dogs.

To quickly isolate suspected cases to control the epidemics, this study proposes a body temperature monitoring system with a thermography based on the Internet of Things (IoT) architecture. The collected data are transmitted to a back-end platform via wireless communication. Using the analyzed data, the platform provides services, such as instant alerts for any anomalies, infectious disease outbreak prediction, and risk level assessment for a given area, and it will be a great help to epidemic prevention. The mean absolute percentage error and root mean square error of the proposed monitoring system under an extensive series of experiments are 0.04% and 0.0204°C, respectively. It shows that the body temperature measured by the thermal imaging sensor in the system can accurately represent the actual body temperature after specific calibrations that take the environmental temperature into account. It can also be expanded to a decision supporting system to help schools or government agencies to make proper decisions to stop the spread of infectious diseases.

OBJECTIVES: Rhythmic body rocking movements may occur in prefrontal epileptic seizures. Here, we compare quantified time-evolving frequency of stereotyped rocking with signal analysis of intracerebral electroencephalographic data. METHODS: In a single patient, prefrontal seizures with rhythmic anteroposterior body rocking recorded on stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) were analyzed using fast Fourier transform, time-frequency decomposition and phase amplitude coupling, with regards to quantified video data. Comparison was made with seizures without rocking in the same patient, as well as resting state data. RESULTS: Rocking movements in the delta (∼1 Hz) range began a few seconds after SEEG onset of low voltage fast discharge. During rocking movements: (1) presence of a peak of delta band activity was visible in bipolar montage, with maximal power in epileptogenic zone and corresponding to mean rocking frequency; (2) correlation, using phase amplitude coupling, was shown between the phase of this delta activity and high-gamma power in the epileptogenic zone and the anterior cingulate region. CONCLUSIONS: Here, delta range rhythmic body rocking was associated with cortical delta oscillatory activity and phase-coupled high-gamma energy. These results suggest a neural signature during expression of motor semiology incorporating both temporal features associated with rhythmic movements and spatial features of seizure discharge.

OBJECTIVES: Rhythmic, stereotyped movements occur in some epileptic seizures. We aimed to document time-evolving frequencies of antero-posterior rocking occurring during prefrontal seizures, using a quantitative video analysis. METHODS: Six seizures from 3 patients with prefrontal epilepsy yet different sublobar localizations were analyzed using a deep learning-based head-tracking method. RESULTS: Mean rocking frequency varied between patients and seizures (0.37-1.0Hz). Coefficient of variation of frequency was low (≤12%). DISCUSSION: Regularity of body rocking movements suggests a mechanism involving intrinsic oscillatory generators. Since localization of seizure onset varied within prefrontal cortex across patients, altered dynamics converging on a "final common pathway" of seizure propagation involving cortico-subcortical circuits is hypothesized.

The intensive measures of luminescence in a GaN/InGaN multiple quantum well system are used to examine the thermodynamics and phenomenological structure. The radiative /nonradiative transitions along with absorbed or emitted phonons that occur between the different quantum states of the electrons and holes associated with these processes make the quantum efficiency of a semiconductor nanosystem in an equilibrium state an extensive property. It has long been recognized that tuning of the indium (In) composition in InGaN interlayers gives the potential to obtain a spectrum in the near-infrared to near-ultraviolet spectral range. The thermodynamic intensive properties, including the Debye temperature, carrier temperature, and junction temperature, are the most appropriate metrics to describe the optical-related interactions inherent in a given heterostructure and so can be used as the state variables for understanding the quantum exchange behaviors. The energetic features of the quantum processes are characterized based on analysis of the intensive parameters as determined by means of electroluminescence (EL) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and current-voltage measurement and then correlated with the designed InGaN/GaN microstructures. According to the McCumber-Sturge theory, the EL and PL Debye temperatures obtained experimentally signal the strength of the electron-phonon and photon-phonon interaction, respectively, while the EL and PL carrier/junction temperatures correspond to the carrier localization. Higher EL Debye temperatures and lower EL carrier/junction temperatures reflect significantly higher luminescence quantum yields, indicative of electron-phonon coupling in the transfer of thermal energy between the confined electrons and the enhancement by excited phonons of heat-assisted emissions. On the other hand, the observation of low luminescence efficiency, corresponding to the lower PL Debye temperatures and higher PL carrier/junction temperatures, is attributed to photon-phonon coupling. These findings are in good accordance to the dependence of the EL and PL quantum efficiency on the In-content of the InGaN/GaN barriers, suggesting that the characteristic Debye and carrier/junction temperatures are intensive parameters useful for assessing the optical properties of a nano-engineered semiconductor heterostructure.

BACKGROUND: Bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells (BMMSCs) are cardioprotective in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) because of release of paracrine angiogenic and prosurvival factors. Hypoxia-inducible factor 1-α (HIF1-α), rapidly degraded during normoxia, is stabilized during ischemia and upregulates various cardioprotective genes. We hypothesized that BMMSCs engineered to overexpress mutant, oxygen-resistant HIF1-α would confer greater cardioprotection than nontransfected BMMSCs in sheep with AMI. METHODS AND RESULTS: Allogeneic BMMSCs transfected with a minicircle vector encoding mutant HIF1-α (BMMSC-HIF) were injected in the peri-infarct of sheep (n=6) undergoing coronary occlusion. Over 2 months, infarct volume measured by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging decreased by 71.7±1.3% (P<0.001), and left ventricular (LV) percent ejection fraction (%EF) increased near 2-fold (P<0.001) in the presence of markedly decreased end-systolic volume. Sheep receiving nontransfected BMMSCs (BMMSC; n=6) displayed less infarct size limitation and percent LVEF improvement, whereas in placebo-treated animals (n=6), neither parameters changed over time. HIF1-α-transfected BMMSCs (BMMSC-HIF) induced angio-/arteriogenesis and decreased apoptosis by HIF1-mediated overexpression of erythropoietin, inducible nitrous oxide synthase, vascular endothelial growth factor, and angiopoietin-1. Cell tracking using paramagnetic iron nanoparticles in 12 additional sheep revealed enhanced long-term retention of BMMSC-HIF. CONCLUSIONS: Intramyocardial delivery of BMMSC-HIF reduced infarct size and improved LV systolic performance compared to BMMSC, attributed to increased neovascularization and cardioprotective effects induced by HIF1-mediated overexpression of paracrine factors and enhanced retention of injected cells. Given the safety of the minicircle vector and the feasibility of BMMSCs for allogeneic application, this treatment may be potentially useful in the clinic.

Ketamine is emerging as a new hope against depression, but ketamine-associated psychotomimetic effects limit its clinical use. An adjunct therapy along with ketamine to alleviate its adverse effects and even potentiate the antidepressant effects might be an alternative strategy. Betaine, a methyl derivative of glycine and a dietary supplement, has been shown to have antidepressant-like effects and to act like a partial agonist at the glycine site of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs). Accordingly, betaine might have potential to be an adjunct to ketamine treatment for depression. The antidepressant-like effects of ketamine and betaine were evaluated by forced swimming test and novelty suppressed feeding test in mice. Both betaine and ketamine produced antidepressant-like effects. Furthermore, we determined the effects of betaine on ketamine-induced antidepressant-like and psychotomimetic behaviors, motor incoordination, hyperlocomotor activity, and anesthesia. The antidepressant-like responses to betaine combined with ketamine were stronger than their individual effects. In contrast, ketamine-induced impairments in prepulse inhibition, novel object recognition test, social interaction, and rotarod test were remarkably attenuated, whereas ketamine-induced hyperlocomotion and loss of righting reflex were not affected by betaine. These findings revealed that betaine could enhance the antidepressant-like effects, yet block the psychotomimetic effects of ketamine, suggesting that betaine can be considered as an add-on therapy to ketamine for treatment-resistant depression and suitable for the treatment of depressive symptoms in patients with schizophrenia.

Ketamine, a dissociative anesthetic, produces rapid and sustained antidepressant effects at subanesthtic doses. However, it still inevitably induces psychotomimetic side effects. N,N-dimethylglycine (DMG) is a derivative of the amino acid glycine and is used as a dietary supplement. Recently, DMG has been found acting at glycine binding site of the N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR). As blockade of NMDARs is one of the main mechanisms responsible for the action of ketamine on central nervous system, DMG might modulate the behavioral responses to ketamine. The present study determined the effects of DMG on the ketamine-induced psychotomimetic, anesthetic and antidepressant-like effects in mice. DMG pretreatment reversed the ketamine-induced locomotor hyperactivity and impairment in the rotarod performance, novel location and novel object recognition tests, and prepulse inhibition. In addition, DMG alone exhibited antidepressant-like effects in the forced swim test and produced additive effects when combined with ketamine. However, DMG did not affect ketamine-induced anesthesia. These results reveal that DMG could antagonize ketamine's psychotomimetic effects, yet produce additive antidepressant-like effects with ketamine, suggesting that DMG might have antipsychotic potential and be suitable as an add-on therapy to ketamine for patients with treatment-resistant depression.

BACKGROUND: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a neurological sensory motor disorder of which pathophysiology remains sketchy. The present study was aimed to determine the diagnostic accuracy and potential of SPECT-TRODAT imaging in discriminating patients with RLS from normal individuals. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 34 subjects, 22 diagnosed with RLS and 12 classified as normal, were enrolled. Brain SPECT images were acquired 180 minutes after IV injection of 740 to 925 MBq (20-25 mCi) 99mTc-TRODAT-1 using a double-headed γ-camera equipped with high-resolution fan-beam collimators. Regions of interest were drawn over the whole striatum, caudate, and putamen nucleus of each hemisphere on composite images of the 9 slices with the highest basal ganglia activity. The brain SPECT 99mTc-TRODAT-1 imaging was compared with early-stage RLS patients and healthy volunteers groups. RESULT: SPECT imaging in RLS patients showed reduced radioactivity accumulation in the striatum profile. The major abnormal result observed is the significantly reduced uptake in striatal dopamine transporter density and activity. The symmetric striatal uptake was observed, and striatum dopamine transporter destiny was more impaired in patients with RLS disease. SPECT images also showed significant differences between patients and volunteers. CONCLUSIONS: This study supports that symptoms of restless legs resulted from the striatum of the brain dopaminergic system dysfunction.

The objective of the current study was to investigate the effects of Ca(2+) levels on myofibril alignment during zebrafish embryogenesis. To investigate how altered cytoplasmic Ca(2+) levels affect myofibril alignment, we exposed zebrafish embryos to 2-aminothoxyldiphenyl borate (2-APB; an inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor inhibitor that reduces cytosolic Ca(2+) levels) and caffeine (a ryanodine receptor activator that enhances cytosolic Ca(2+) levels). The results demonstrated that the most evident changes in zebrafish embryos treated with 2-APB were shorter body length, curved trunk and malformed somite boundary. In contrast, such malformed phenotypes were evident neither in untreated controls nor in caffeine-treated embryos. Subtle morphological changes, including changes in muscle fibers, F-actin and ultrastructures were easily observed by staining with specific monoclonal antibodies (F59 and α-laminin), fluorescent probes (phalloidin) and by transmission electron microscopy. Our data suggested that: (1) the exposure to 2-APB and/or caffeine led to myofibril misalignment; (2) 2-APB-treated embryos displayed split and short myofibril phenotypes, whereas muscle fibers from caffeine-treated embryos were twisted and wavy; and (3) zebrafish embryos co-exposed to 2-APB and caffeine resulted in normal myofibril alignment. In conclusion, we proposed that cytosolic Ca(2+) is important for myogenesis, particularly for myofibril alignment.

OBJECTIVE: Acute carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning poses a significant threat to the central nervous system. It can cause brain injury and diverse neurological deficits including persistent neurological sequelae (PNS) and delayed neurological sequelae (DNS). The study aimed to investigate the long-term impacts of acute CO poisoning on brain perfusion and neurological function, and to explore potential differences between PNS and DNS patients. METHODS: We evaluated brain perfusion using (99m)Tc ethyl cysteinate (ECD) brain single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and assessed clinical neurological symptoms and signs one month following acute poisoning. For DNS patients, ECD SPECT and clinical evaluation were performed when their delayed symptoms appeared. All patients had follow-up SPECT imaging, along with clinical assessments six months following poisoning. RESULTS: 12 PNS and 12 DNS patients were recruited between 2007 and 2010. Clinically, the main characteristic presentations were cognitive decline, emotional instability, and gait disturbance. SPECT imaging demonstrated consistent frontal hypoperfusion of varying severities in all patients, which decreased in severity at follow-up imaging. DNS patients usually had more severe symptoms and perfusion defects, along with worse clinical outcomes than the PNS group. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that acute CO poisoning might lead to long term brain injuries and neurological sequelae, particularly in DNS patients.

Lie group analysis of the photo-induced fluorescence of Drosophila oogenesis with the asymmetrically localized Gurken protein has been performed systematically to assess the roles of ligand-receptor complexes in follicle cells. The (2×2) matrix representations resulting from the polarized tissue spectra were employed to characterize the asymmetrical Gurken distributions. It was found that the fluorescence of the wild-type egg shows the Lie point symmetry X 23 at early stages of oogenesis. However, due to the morphogen regulation by intracellular proteins and extracellular proteins, the fluorescence of the embryogenesis with asymmetrically localized Gurken expansions exhibits specific symmetry features: Lie point symmetry Z 1 and Lie point symmetry X 1. The novel approach developed herein was successfully used to validate that the invariant-theoretical characterizations are consonant with the observed asymmetric fluctuations during early embryological development.

In this study, the feasibility of using a one dimensional 16-element flexible ultrasonic transducer (FUT) array for nondestructive testing at 150 °C is demonstrated. The FUT arrays were made by a sol-gel sprayed piezoelectric film technology; a PZT composite film was sprayed on a titanium foil of 75 µm thickness. Since the FUT array is flexible, it was attached to a steel pipe with an outer diameter of 89 mm and a wall thickness of 6.5 mm at 150 °C. Using the ultrasonic pulse-echo mode, pipe thickness measurements could be performed. Moreover, using the ultrasonic pulse-echo and pitch-catch modes of each element of FUT array, the defect detection was performed on an Al alloy block of 30 mm thickness with a side-drilled hole (SDH) of f3 mm at 150 °C. In addition, a post-processing algorithm based on the total focusing method was used to process the full matrix of these A-scan signals of each single transmitter and multi-receivers, and then the phase-array image was obtained to indicate this defect- SDH. Both results show the capability of FUT array being operated at 150 °C for the corrosion and defect detections.

In recent years, zinc oxide (ZnO) has become one of the most popular research materials due to its unique properties and various applications. ZnO is an intrinsic semiconductor, with a wide bandgap (3.37 eV) and large exciton binding energy (60 meV) making it suitable for many optical applications. In this experiment, the simple hydrothermal method is used to grow indium-doped ZnO nanostructures on a silicon wafer, which are then annealed at different temperatures (400°C to 1,000°C) in an abundant oxygen atmosphere. This study discusses the surface structure and optical characteristic of ZnO nanomaterials. The structure of the ZnO nanostructures is analyzed by X-ray diffraction, the superficial state by scanning electron microscopy, and the optical measurements which are carried out using the temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) spectra. In this study, we discuss the broad peak energy of the yellow-orange emission which shows tendency towards a blueshift with the temperature increase in the PL spectra. This differs from other common semiconductors which have an increase in their peak energy of deep-level emission along with measurement temperature.

BACKGROUND: Selective nonoperative management has become the Standard care for blunt solid organ trauma patients, and torso computed tomography (CT) provides useful therapeutic clues. We conducted this study to determine the frequency and character of missed diagnoses in blunt solid organ trauma patients. METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of all blunt trauma patients who underwent torso CT and who were admitted for solid organ injuries (liver, spleen and kidney) at the Chi- Mei Medical Center from August 2003 to October 2006. RESULTS: The patients were divided into the Missed Group (24 patients) and the Unaltered Group (262 patients) according to the presence or absence of a missed diagnosis. The overall missed diagnosis rate was 8.4%. Only one unidentified bowel injury was disclosed by follow-up CT, and all of the missed injuries were revealed by laparotomy. The Missed Group had a higher Injury Severity Score, lower Glasgow Coma Scale, more Intensive Care Unit (ICU) care, and longer duration of hospitalization. CONCLUSION: Discovery of missed diagnoses is not uncommon in patients who sustain severe trauma. Laparotomy revealed all of the missed diagnoses, and follow-up CT demonstrated a poor ability to detect unidentified injuries. We suggest laparotomy instead of follow-up CT in the nonoperative management of patients with blunt solid organ injuries if clinical deterioration occurs.
