RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Reduced glomerular filtration rate and increased asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) are prevalent in elderly people. However, most of the studies that have examined the association between the two conditions were performed in patients with renal dysfunction, but not in the general elderly population. Thus, we investigated an association between estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and ADMA concentration among community-dwelling older Koreans. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 269 men and 382 women (mean age, 71.6 years) enrolled in the Korean Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (KSHAP), a population-based cohort study of health determinants in elderly Koreans. We calculated eGFR using chronic kidney disease- Epidemiology Collaboration Group (CKD-EPI) equation. ADMA concentration was measured by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The association between eGFR and ADMA concentrations was analyzed by multiple linear regression models. RESULTS: The mean ADMA was significantly higher in people with eGFR< 60 mL/min/1.73m2 (0.691 µmol/L) than in those with eGFR≥60 mL/min/1.73m2 (0.667 µmol/L, p = 0.013). The negative correlations between eGFR level and ADMA concentrations were significant in men and women after adjusted age. After adjusting for potential confounders which were sex, age, body surface, blood pressure, total and HDL cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, and drinking, eGFR levels were inversely associated with ADMA concentrations both in men (ß = - 0.0015, p = 0.005) and women (ß = - 0.001, p = 0.039). CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that an inverse association exists between eGFR and ADMA concentrations among the Korean elderly in a rural community.

RESUMEN

An oxidative cleavage of a C-C double bond is developed from the photochemical [2+2]-cycloaddition of diaryl N-tosyl enamides, aryl heteroaryl N-tosyl enamides, and N-tosyl cyclic enamides with singlet molecular oxygen, followed by a ring-opening reaction mediated by Cs2CO3 under air and sunlight without the use of photosesitizer, producing symmetrical and unsymmetrical diaryl, heterodiaryl, and cyclic ketones in good to excellent yields. Moreover, the oxidative cleavage of C-C triple bonds from 1-alkynes is demonstrated for the synthesis of symmetrical and unsymmetrical ketones from the Cu-catalyzed [3+2]-cycloaddition, Rh-catalyzed alkoxyarylation, photooxygenation, and ring-opening reaction in one-pot. Because the synthesis of the symmetrical and unsymmetrical diaryl and/or heterodiaryl ketones bearing an electron-donating group is not easy, the present method is notable.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The goal of this study was to analyze the relationship between exercise frequency and all-cause mortality for individuals diagnosed with and without diabetes mellitus (DM). METHODS: We analyzed data for 505,677 participants (53.9% men) in the National Health Insurance Service-National Health Screening (NHIS-HEALS) cohort. The study endpoint variable was all-cause mortality. RESULTS: Frequency of exercise and covariates including age, sex, smoking status, household income, blood pressure, fasting glucose, body mass index, total cholesterol, and Charlson comorbidity index were determined at baseline. Cox proportional hazard regression models were developed to assess the effects of exercise frequency (0, 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, and 7 days per week) on mortality, separately in individuals with and without DM. We found a U-shaped association between exercise frequency and mortality in individuals with and without DM. However, the frequency of exercise associated with the lowest risk of all-cause mortality was 3-4 times per week (hazard ratio [HR], 0.69; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.65-0.73) in individuals without DM, and 5-6 times per week in those with DM (HR, 0.93; 95% CI, 0.78-1.10). CONCLUSION: A moderate frequency of exercise may reduce mortality regardless of the presence or absence of DM; however, when compared to those without the condition, people with DM may need to exercise more often.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Dry eye disease (DED) is an increasingly important public health problem in Korea. Previous studies conducted in Korea have reported inconsistent results regarding the protective effects of vitamin D on DED, and these discrepancies may be related to the relatively simple questionnaire that has been used. Thus, we evaluated the association of serum vitamin D levels with DED using the ocular surface disease index (OSDI). METHODS: The present study evaluated data from participants in the Study Group for Environmental Eye Disease (2014-2015). This group included data from 752 participants, and data from 740 participants (253 men and 487 women) were analyzed in the present study. DED severity was evaluated using the OSDI. RESULTS: Higher serum vitamin D levels were associated with a non-significantly reduced risk of DED in the crude analysis (odds ratio [OR], 0.991; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.971 to 1.011) and in the adjusted analysis (OR, 0.988; 95% CI, 0.966 to 1.010). In the crude analysis of no/mild DED vs. moderate/severe DED, men exhibited a decreased risk with increasing serum vitamin D levels (OR, 0.999; 95% CI, 0.950 to 1.051), while women exhibited an increased risk (OR, 1.003; 95% CI, 0.979 to 1.027). In these analyses, we found no significant associations. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of the present study support previous reports that serum vitamin D levels are not associated with DED.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Vitamin D deficiency has been reported to be associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease. We investigated the relationship between vitamin D status and asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) concentration, a marker of endothelial dysfunction, in the Korean elderly population. STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 269 men and 382 women (mean age, 71.6 years) enrolled in the Korean Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (KSHAP), a population-based longitudinal study of health determinants in elderly Koreans. We stratified patients by vitamin D status into three groups according to serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] level: sufficient (≥30ng/mL, n=25), insufficient (10-<30ng/mL, n=516), and deficient (<10ng/mL, n=110). To measure endothelial dysfunction, ADMA concentration was assayed by high-performance liquid chromatography. The association between 25(OH)D status and ADMA concentration was analyzed by multiple linear regression models. RESULTS: The mean ADMA concentration was significantly higher in the insufficient 25(OH)D group (0.665µmol/L, p=0.001) and the deficient 25(OH)D group (0.734µmol/L, p<0.001) compared with the sufficient 25(OH)D group (0.589µmol/L). Even after adjusting for sex, age, body mass index, blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, total and HDL cholesterol, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), smoking status, and drinking status, ADMA concentrations were higher in the insufficient group (ß=0.0742µmol/L, p=0.001) and the deficient group (ß=0.1417µmol/L, p<0.001) compared than in the sufficient group. In a sex-stratified analysis, 25(OH)D deficiency was associated with higher ADMA levels in both women (p<0.001) and men (p=0.007), while 25(OH)D deficiency was associated with higher ADMA levels in women (p<0.001) but not in men (p=0.631). CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that low serum 25(OH)D level may be associated with endothelial dysfunction in elderly Korean people.

RESUMEN

Different phases in hybrid complexes of Co(II) with cis-4-cyclohexene-1-2-dicarboxylicacid (C6H8-1,2-CO2H=Cy-H2) have been generated depending on the reaction conditions. By microwave-irradiation of the same reaction mixtures at different temperatures we have obtained two new phases Co(C8H8O4) x H2O and [Co2(OH)2.8(Cy-H)1.2]. These phases have been established by XRD, UV-DRS, IR and thermo-gravimetric studies as well as by comparison with the reported phases. In these phases the Cy is found in a cis conformation. It has been seen that microwave synthesis proves to be a rapid and clean method of obtaining new high temperature phases in high purity which are obtained, in an impure state after a long time of hydrothermal synthesis.
