RESUMEN

Resistant hypertension is diagnosed in patients whose blood pressure target is unmet despite the use of three or more antihypertensive medications. Systemic sympathetic hyperactivation is associated with the development of resistant hypertension. As the kidney is largely pervasive of the sympathetic nervous system renal denervation procedure was developed to control blood pressure by attenuating the renal and systemic sympathetic hyperactivity. Renal denervation is a minimally invasive procedure that uses radiofrequency or ultrasound energy waves to reduce the activity of the renal artery nerves. Previous clinical trials have shown conflicting results regarding the efficacy of the procedure. Symplicity HTN-1 and -2 trials showed effective blood pressure lowering results in the renal denervation group with a good safety profile. However, the Symplicity HTN-3 trial showed no difference in blood pressure lowering effect between the renal denervation and control Sham procedure groups. Notwithstanding, some recent clinical trials with Sham control and meta-analysis showed clinical benefits of renal denervation. Other clinical benefits of renal denervation include glucose control, cardiovascular protective effect, reduction of obstructive sleep apnea, and neuralgia control. A subset of patients with satisfactory blood pressure control response to the procedure may experience improved glucose control due to the overall reduced sympathetic activity and insulin resistance. Sympathetic activity control after renal denervation has cardioprotective effects, especially for those with arrhythmia and left ventricular hypertrophy. Also, renal denervation could be helpful in renalorigin pain control. Renal denervation is an effective, safe, non-invasive procedure with many clinical benefits beyond blood pressure control. Further development in the procedure technique and selection of target patients are needed for wider clinical use of renal denervation in resistant hypertension.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To develop a healthcare chatbot service (AI-guided bot) that conducts real-time conversations using large language models to provide accurate health information to patients. METHODS: To provide accurate and specialized medical responses, we integrated several cancer practice guidelines. The size of the integrated meta-dataset was 1.17 million tokens. The integrated and classified metadata were extracted, transformed into text, segmented to specific character lengths, and vectorized using the embedding model. The AI-guide bot was implemented using Python 3.9. To enhance the scalability and incorporate the integrated dataset, we combined the AI-guide bot with OpenAI and the LangChain framework. To generate user-friendly conversations, a language model was developed based on Chat-Generative Pretrained Transformer (ChatGPT), an interactive conversational chatbot powered by GPT-3.5. The AI-guide bot was implemented using ChatGPT3.5 from Sep. 2023 to Jan. 2024. RESULTS: The AI-guide bot allowed users to select their desired cancer type and language for conversational interactions. The AI-guided bot was designed to expand its capabilities to encompass multiple major cancer types. The performance of the AI-guide bot responses was 90.98 ± 4.02 (obtained by summing up the Likert scores). CONCLUSIONS: The AI-guide bot can provide medical information quickly and accurately to patients with cancer who are concerned about their health.

This study aimed to determine whether the state of retinal vascularization after anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) injection can help predict the risk of reactivated retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) requiring treatment and whether repeated ranibizumab injection will be effective in such cases. We retrospectively reviewed 24 infants (43 eyes) who received ranibizumab monotherapy between January 2021 and December 2022. All eyes were classified as having non-retreated ROP or retreated ROP. The state of ROP at the time of treatment, the time required for resolution of plus disease, and the extent of vascularization at 4 and 8 weeks after treatment were analyzed. Extent of temporal retinal vascularization was measured with serial fundus images using disc-fovea distance (DF) unit and disc diameter (DD). Reactivated ROP requiring treatment occurred in six infants (25.0%) and ten eyes (23.3%) after ranibizumab treatment. The mean retreatment interval was 9.0 ± 3.3 weeks (range 4-16). In the retreated ROP group, the time required for the resolution of plus disease after primary injection was longer compared to the control group (13.3 days vs 5.2 days), with a mean ROP regression time of 3.4 weeks. All eyes in the retreated ROP showed retinal vascularization < 0.5 DF from the original site at 4 weeks after injection. In 90% of cases with retreated ROP, the extent of vascularization at 8 weeks after injection was within 1 DF from the original ROP site, and all cases showed reactivation in the posterior Zone II area. The extent of retinal neovascularization in the retreated group was an average of 0.7 DD (vs 1.7 DD) and 1.3 DD (vs 3.3 DD) at 4 and 8 weeks after injection, respectively. After ranibizumab retreatment, only one reactivated case with vitreous traction progressed to focal retinal detachment, while all other cases regressed with peripheral vascular development. The continuation of delayed retinal blood vessel development after ≥ 8 weeks may indicate a high likelihood of reactivated ROP requiring treatment. In the absence of vitreous traction, ranibizumab reinjection is likely to be effective in treating reactivated ROP requiring treatment.

BACKGROUND: The impact of excluding intrahepatic segmental vessels from regions of interest (ROIs) on liver stiffness measurement (LSM) via magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) remains uncertain. PURPOSE: To determine the effect of excluding intrahepatic segmental vessels from ROIs on LSM obtained from MRE. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective analysis included 95 participants who underwent successful two-dimensional gradient recalled-echo MRE before hepatic tumor resection (n = 49) or living liver donation (n = 46). The conventional LSM was determined by manually drawing ROIs on the elastogram within the 95% confidence region, staying 1 cm within the liver capsule and excluding large hilar vessels, the gallbladder, hepatic lesions, and artifacts. In addition, the modified LSM was determined by excluding intrahepatic segmental vessels. LSMs obtained by the two methods were compared with paired sample signed-rank test. Diagnostic performance for advanced fibrosis was calculated and compared using McNemar's test and Delong's test. The stage of hepatic fibrosis was assessed using surgical specimens by the METAVIR system. RESULTS: The modified LSM was larger than the conventional LSM (2.4 kPa vs. 2.2 kPa in reader 1; 2.7 kPa vs. 2.4 kPa in reader 2; P < 0.001). The modified LSM showed superior sensitivity (0.841 vs. 0.659 in reader 1; 0.864 vs. 0.705 in reader 2; P < 0.05) and area under the curve (0.901 vs. 0.820 in reader 1; 0.912 vs. 0.843 in reader 2; P < 0.05) for detecting advanced fibrosis (≥F3) than conventional LSM. CONCLUSION: The exclusion of intrahepatic segmental vessels from ROIs in MRE affected the LSM and enhanced diagnostic performance for advanced fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Colon cancer ranks as the second most lethal form of cancer globally. In recent years, there has been active investigation into using the methylation profile of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), derived from blood, as a promising indicator for diagnosing and monitoring colon cancer. RESULTS: We propose a liquid biopsy-based epigenetic method developed by utilizing 49 patients and 260 healthy controls methylation profile data to screen and monitor colon cancer. Our method initially identified 901 colon cancer-specific hypermethylated (CaSH) regions in the tissues of the 49 cancer patients. We then used these CaSH regions to accurately quantify the amount of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) in the blood samples of these same patients, utilizing cell-free DNA methylation profiles. Notably, the methylation profiles of ctDNA in the blood exhibited high sensitivity (82%) and specificity (93%) in distinguishing patients with colon cancer from the control group, with an area under the curve of 0.903. Furthermore, we confirm that our method for ctDNA quantification is effective for monitoring cancer patients and can serve as a valuable tool for postoperative prognosis. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated a successful application of the quantification of ctDNA among cfDNA using the original cancer tissue-derived CaSH region for screening and monitoring colon cancer.

Patient safety education is necessary for the provision of high-quality medical services. A significant aspect of patient safety education is simulation training, which allows medical students to experience realistic clinical environments. This study aimed to verify the effectiveness of patient safety education using simulation training. We retrospectively analyzed the results of a 30-question questionnaire survey on the perceptions of patient safety before and after simulation training, which was completed by 40 medical students who participated in clinical practice between June and December 2021. A paired t-test was performed by calculating the mean and standard deviation for each item. We found that students' overall perceptions of patient safety improved after training. Specifically, after simulation training, attitudes toward patient safety were maintained at the same level as before training, while students' self-efficacy of patient safety increased. Simulation training is effective in improving students' perceptions of patient safety, and increasing students' confidence can improve their clinical performance. To maintain this effect, repeated learning is required, and theoretical classes and simulation training should be used appropriately for patient safety education in the future.

There is increasing interest in hair loss treatment because a growing number of people affected. Nepenthes kampotiana Lecomte is known for its anticancer effects, but its potential for preventing hair loss has not been researched. Therefore, this study focused on the hair loss prevention effects of N. kampotiana Lecomte ethanol extract (Nk-EE). The results showed that Nk-EE had a proliferative effect on human follicle dermal papilla cells and inhibited cell death. In vivo experiments using androgenic areata models showed that Nk-EE had a positive effect on a variety of biomarkers such as hair-to-skin ratio, hair type frequency, and hair thickness. The results of this study suggest that Nk-EE has potential as an effective treatment for androgenic alopecia.

Peritoneal dialysis is a common treatment for end-stage renal disease, but complications often force its discontinuation. Preventive treatments for peritoneal inflammation and fibrosis are currently lacking. Cyclo(His-Pro) (CHP), a naturally occurring cyclic dipeptide, has demonstrated protective effects in various fibrotic diseases, yet its potential role in peritoneal fibrosis (PF) remains uncertain. In a mouse model of induced PF, CHP was administered, and quantitative proteomic analysis using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was employed to identify PF-related protein signaling pathways. The results were further validated using human primary cultured mesothelial cells. This analysis revealed the involvement of histone deacetylase 3 (HDAC3) in the PF signaling pathway. CHP administration effectively mitigated PF in both peritoneal tissue and human primary cultured mesothelial cells, concurrently regulating fibrosis-related markers and HDAC3 expression. Moreover, CHP enhanced the expression of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) while suppressing forkhead box protein M1 (FOXM1), known to inhibit Nrf2 transcription through its interaction with HDAC3. CHP also displayed an impact on spleen myeloid-derived suppressor cells, suggesting an immunomodulatory effect. Notably, CHP improved mitochondrial function in peritoneal tissue, resulting in increased mitochondrial membrane potential and adenosine triphosphate production. This study suggests that CHP can significantly prevent PF in peritoneal dialysis patients by modulating HDAC3 expression and associated signaling pathways, reducing fibrosis and inflammation markers, and improving mitochondrial function.

Objectives: Cognitive impairments, ranging from mild to severe, adversely affect daily functioning, quality of life, and work capacity. Despite significant efforts in the past decade, more than 200 promising drug candidates have failed in clinical trials. Herbal remedies are gaining interest as potential treatments for dementia due to their long history and safety, making them valuable for drug development. This review aimed to examine the mechanisms behind the effect of Polygonum multiflorum on cognitive function. Methods: This study focused primarily on the effects of Polygonum multiflorum and its chemical constituents on cognitive behavioral outcomes including the Morris water maze, the passive avoidance test, and the Y maze, as well as pathogenic targets of cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease (AD) like amyloid deposition, amyloid precursor protein, tau hyperphosphorylation, and cognitive decline. Additionally, a thorough evaluation of the mechanisms behind Polygonum multiflorum's impact on cognitive function was conducted. We reviewed the most recent data from preclinical research done on experimental models, particularly looking at Polygonum multiflorum's effects on cognitive decline and AD. Results: According to recent research, Poligonum multiflorum and its bioactive components, stilbene, and emodin, influence cognitive behavioral results and regulate the pathological target of cognitive impairment and AD. Their mechanisms of action include reducing oxidative and mitochondrial damage, regulating neuroinflammation, halting apoptosis, and promoting increased neurogenesis and synaptogenesis. Conclusion: This review serves as a comprehensive compilation of current experiments on AD and other cognitive impairment models related to the therapeutic effects of Polygonum multiflorum. We believe that these findings can serve as a basis for future clinical trials and have potential applications in the treatment of human neurological disorders.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess the genotoxicity of a no-pain pharmacopuncture (NPP) extract developed in 2022 using a bacterial reverse mutation assay, aiming to further substantiate the safety profile of NPP. Methods: The genotoxicity evaluation involved a bacterial reverse mutation assay to assess the mutagenic potential of NPP extracts with and without metabolic activation. Histidine-requiring Salmonella typhimurium strains (TA98, TA100, TA1535, and TA1537) and tryptophan-requiring Escherichia coli strains (WP2uvrA) were used in the assay. Results: The NPP extract did not induce a revertant colony count exceeding two times that of the negative control at any dose level in any of the tested strains, both with and without metabolic activation. Additionally, no growth inhibition or precipitation was observed in the presence of NPP. Conclusion: Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the NPP extract exhibited no mutagenic potential in the in vitro genotoxicity tests conducted.

Background: Investigating the effects of electroacupuncture (EA) treatment on cardiovascular function and aortic lipid profiles in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) constitutes the foundational focus of this study. The overarching goal is to comprehensively elucidate the alterations brought about by EA treatment and to assess its potential as an alternative therapy for hypertension. Methods: Consecutive EA treatments were administered to SHR, and the effects on systolic blood pressure, cardiac function, and hypertension-related neuronal signals were assessed. Aortic lipid profiles in vehicle-treated SHR and EA-treated SHR groups were analyzed using mass spectrometry-based lipid profiling. Additionally, the expression of Cers2 and GNPAT, enzymes involved in the synthesis of specific aortic lipids, was examined. Results: The study demonstrated that consecutive EA treatments restored systolic blood pressure, improved cardiovascular function, and normalized hypertension-related neuronal signals in SHR. Analysis of the aortic lipid profiles revealed distinct differences between the vehicle-treated SHR group and the EA-treated SHR group. Specifically, EA treatment significantly altered the levels of aortic sphingomyelin and phospholipids, including very long-chain fatty acyl-ceramides and ether phosphatidylcholines. These changes in aortic lipid profiles correlated significantly with systolic blood pressure and cardiac function indicators. Furthermore, EA treatment significantly altered the expression of Cers2 and GNPAT. Conclusions: The findings suggest that EA may influence cardiovascular functions and aortic lipid profiles in SHR.

Extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) photolithography, which enables the high-throughput production of well-defined patterns with critical dimensions on the scale of several nanometers, is essential for the fabrication of a highly integrated semiconductor. The full exploitation of EUV lithographic techniques necessitates the development of photoresist (PR) materials with both high EUV sensitivity and a long shelf-life. However, despite notable advances, the available library of EUV PR materials remains limited. Here we report EUV PRs capable of forming preorganized layers consisting of ladder-structured tetranuclear stannoxanes. Single-crystal X-ray structure analyses reveal a close interlayer distance of 8.5 Å through interdigitation of the pseudoaxial butyl chains. The developed EUV PR materials exhibit high solubility in organic solvents commonly used in semiconductor processing, enabling the preparation of PR solutions with superior wettability and uniform film-forming ability on Si wafer substrates. These PR solutions also demonstrate notable resistance to hydrolytic decomposition for as long as 1 month, indicating a long shelf-life. Our PR materials enabled negative-tone patterning processes that involved a solubility decrease upon irradiation. The presence of chromophoric ligands makes our PR materials compatible with conventional UV photolithography, through photochemical reactions involving carbonyl units. In addition, e-beam and EUV lithography could produce fine line patterns of our PRs, with critical dimensions of 20 and 15 nm, respectively. Our research showcases the potential of layer-ordered organooxotin clusters for EUV PR applications.

Colorectal cancer, the third most commonly occurring tumor worldwide, poses challenges owing to its high mortality rate and persistent drug resistance in metastatic cases. We investigated the tumor microenvironment, emphasizing the role of cancer-associated fibroblasts in the progression and chemoresistance of colorectal cancer. We used an indirect co-culture system comprising colorectal cancer organoids and cancer-associated fibroblasts to simulate the tumor microenvironment. Immunofluorescence staining validated the characteristics of both organoids and fibroblasts, showing high expression of epithelial cell markers (EPCAM), colon cancer markers (CK20), proliferation markers (KI67), and fibroblast markers (VIM, SMA). Transcriptome profiling was conducted after treatment with anticancer drugs, such as 5-fluorouracil and oxaliplatin, to identify chemoresistance-related genes. Changes in gene expression in the co-cultured colorectal cancer organoids following anticancer drug treatment, compared to monocultured organoids, particularly in pathways related to interferon-alpha/beta signaling and major histocompatibility complex class II protein complex assembly, were identified. These two gene groups potentially mediate drug resistance associated with JAK/STAT signaling. The interaction between colorectal cancer organoids and fibroblasts crucially modulates the expression of genes related to drug resistance. These findings suggest that the interaction between colorectal cancer organoids and fibroblasts significantly influences gene expression related to drug resistance, highlighting potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets for overcoming chemoresistance. Enhanced understanding of the interactions between cancer cells and their microenvironment can lead to advancements in personalized medical research..

BACKGROUND: The effect of remnant-cholesterol (remnant-C) on incident end-stage renal disease (ESRD) has not been studied longitudinally. This retrospective cohort study evaluated the association between remnant-C and the development of ESRD in a nationwide Korean cohort. METHODS: Participants in a National Health Insurance Service health examination (n = 3,856,985) were followed up until the onset of ESRD. The median duration of follow-up was 10.3 years. The Martin-Hopkins equation was used to determine low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels from directly measured triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and total cholesterol levels. Remnant-C levels were determined by subtracting HDL-C and LDL-C from total cholesterol. The risk for incident ESRD was calculated for each quartile of remnant-C, adjusting for conventional risk factors such as baseline renal function, comorbidities, and total cholesterol levels. RESULTS: ESRD developed in 11,073 (0.29%) participants. The risk for ESRD exhibited a gradual increase according to higher levels of remnant-C, with a 61% increased risk in the highest quartile than in the lowest (hazard ratio [HR] 1.61 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.50-1.72]). The elevated risk for ESRD in the highest quartile versus the lowest quartile was more prominent in younger than in older subjects (20-29 years, HR 4.07 [95% CI 2.85-5.83]; 30-39 years, HR 2.39 [95% CI 1.83-3.13]; ≥ 70 years, HR 1.32 [95% CI 1.16-1.51]). In addition, the increased risk for ESRD related to higher remnant-C levels was greater in females than in males. CONCLUSIONS: Independent of conventional risk factors, remnant-C levels were positively associated with incident ESRD, particularly in younger populations and adult females. Reducing remnant-C levels may be a novel preventive strategy against ESRD.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is emerging as a promising non-invasive intervention for tinnitus by aiming to modulate abnormal brain activity. This study investigated the efficacy of dual-session tDCS for the relief of perception, distress, and loudness in patients with severe chronic subjective tinnitus and assessed the duration of tinnitus suppression effects compared to single-session and control groups over a 2-month follow-up. In a prospective, randomized, single-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 30 participants with severe chronic subjective tinnitus underwent bifrontal tDCS. The control group (n = 9), single-session group (n = 10), and dual-session group (n = 11) received 2 mA stimulation for 20 min per session, twice a week for one month. The treatment response was monitored weekly using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), with additional assessments using the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) at the fourth and eighth weeks. The single- and dual-session groups showed statistically significant improvements in VAS, THI, and BDI scores compared to the control group. THI and BDI scores showed a significant difference between the single- and dual-session groups. The dual-session group demonstrated a more sustained tinnitus suppression effect than the single-session group. tDCS has been validated as an effective intervention for the suppression of tinnitus, with the dual-session protocol showing longer-term benefits. These findings support the potential of tDCS as a treatment for tinnitus, particularly in dual-session applications.

Dermacoccus barathri is the first reported pathogen within the Dermacoccus genus to cause a catheter-related bloodstream infection, which occurred in 2015. In this study, the complete genome assembly of Dermacoccus barathri was constructed, and the complete genome of Dermacoccus barathri FBCC-B549 consists of a single chromosome (3,137,745 bp) without plasmids. The constructed genome of D. barathri was compared with those of two closely related species within the Dermacoccus genus. D. barathri exhibited a pattern similar to Dermacoccus abyssi in terms of gene clusters and synteny analysis. Contrary to previous studies, biosynthetic gene cluster (BGC) analysis for predicting secondary metabolites revealed the presence of the LAP biosynthesis pathway in the complete genome of D. barathri, predicting the potential synthesis of the secondary metabolite plantazolicin. Furthermore, an analysis to investigate the potential pathogenicity of D. barathri did not reveal any antibiotic resistance genes; however, nine virulence factors were identified in the Virulence Factor Database (VFDB). According to these matching results in the VFDB, despite identifying a few factors involved in biofilm formation, further research is required to determine the actual impact of D. barathri on pathogenicity. The complete genome of D. barathri is expected to serve as a valuable resource for future studies on D. barathri, which currently lack sufficient genomic sequence information.

Schizophrenia (SPR) is the most devastating mental illness that causes severe deterioration in social and occupational functioning, but, the etiology remains unknown. The objective of this study is to explore the genetic underpinnings of novelty seeking behavior in schizophrenic family within the Korean population. By conducting a family-based genome-wide association study, we aim to identify potential genetic markers and variations associated with novelty seeking traits in the context of SPR. We have recruited 27 probands (with SPR) with their parents and siblings whenever possible. DNA was extracted from blood sampling of 58 individuals in 27 families and analyzed in an Illumina core exome single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array. A family-based association test (qFAM) was used to derive SNP association values across all chromosomes. Although none of the final 800,000 SNPs reached the genome-wide significant threshold of 8.45 × 10-7, the most significant 4 SNPs were within the 10-5 to 10-7. This study identifies genetic associations between novelty seeking behavior and SPR within families. RAPGEF5 emerges as a significant gene, along with other neuropsychiatric-related genes. Noteworthy genes like DRD4 and COMT did not show associations, possibly due to the focus on schizophrenic family. While shedding light on this complex relationship, larger studies are needed for robust conclusions and deeper mechanistic insights.

Molecular identification of micro- and macroorganisms based on nuclear markers has revolutionized our understanding of their taxonomy, phylogeny and ecology. Today, research on the diversity of eukaryotes in global ecosystems heavily relies on nuclear ribosomal RNA (rRNA) markers. Here, we present the research community-curated reference database EUKARYOME for nuclear ribosomal 18S rRNA, internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and 28S rRNA markers for all eukaryotes, including metazoans (animals), protists, fungi and plants. It is particularly useful for the identification of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi as it bridges the four commonly used molecular markers-ITS1, ITS2, 18S V4-V5 and 28S D1-D2 subregions. The key benefits of this database over other annotated reference sequence databases are that it is not restricted to certain taxonomic groups and it includes all rRNA markers. EUKARYOME also offers a number of reference long-read sequences that are derived from (meta)genomic and (meta)barcoding-a unique feature that can be used for taxonomic identification and chimera control of third-generation, long-read, high-throughput sequencing data. Taxonomic assignments of rRNA genes in the database are verified based on phylogenetic approaches. The reference datasets are available in multiple formats from the project homepage, http://www.eukaryome.org.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical cancer presents a significant global health challenge, disproportionately impacting underserved populations with limited access to healthcare. Early detection and effective management are vital in addressing this public health concern. This study focuses on Glyoxalase-1 (GLO1), an enzyme crucial for methylglyoxal detoxification, in the context of cervical cancer. METHODS: We assessed GLO1 expression in cervical cancer patient samples using immunohistochemistry. In vitro experiments using HeLa cells were conducted to evaluate the impact of GLO1 inhibition on cell viability and migration. Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) and gene set variation analysis were utilized to investigate the role of GLO1 in the metabolism of cervical cancer. Additionally, public microarray data were analyzed to determine GLO1 expression across various stages of cervical cancer. RESULTS: Our analysis included 58 cervical cancer patients, and showed that GLO1 is significantly upregulated in cervical cancer tissues compared to normal cervical tissues, independent of pathological findings and disease stage. In vitro experiments indicated that GLO1 inhibition by S-p-bromobenzylglutathione cyclopentyl diester decreased cell viability and migration in cervical cancer cell lines. Analyses of scRNA-seq data and public gene expression datasets corroborated the overexpression of GLO1 and its involvement in cancer metabolism, particularly glycolysis. An examination of expression data from precancerous lesions revealed a progressive increase in GLO1 expression from normal tissue to invasive cervical cancer. CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights the critical role of GLO1 in the progression of cervical cancer, presenting it as a potential biomarker and therapeutic target. These findings contribute valuable insights towards personalized treatment approaches and augment the ongoing efforts to combat cervical cancer. Further research is necessary to comprehensively explore GLO1's potential in clinical applications.

Purpose: After the declaration by the World Health Organization signaling the conclusion of the COVID-19 pandemic, most countries lifted mandatory mask-wearing regulations. This study aimed to investigate factors such as risk perception and political ideology associated with continued adherence to mask-wearing among specific populations, particularly when it is no longer deemed necessary. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study including a sample of 1001 respondents stratified by sex, age (≥ 18 years), and region from January 31 to February 2, 2023, after the mandatory mask regulation was lifted in South Korea. Multivariate logistic regression models were applied to estimate the relationships between risk perceptions, political ideology, and mask-wearing maintenance, adjusting for factors such as sex, age, occupation, and trust in the government. Results: Our results indicated significant associations between age, self-reported household economic status, political ideology, affective risk perception, and perceived effectiveness of the government's COVID-related measures with indoor mask-wearing. Specifically, liberals were more likely to keep mask-wearing indoors than conservatives (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 2.19; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.33-3.59); and those who perceived a greater affective risk of COVID-19 (aOR: 2.47; 95% CI: 1.96-3.10), along with those who perceived the government's countermeasures as inadequate, were more inclined to maintain the habit of wearing masks indoors (aOR: 1.90; 95% CI: 1.19-3.03). Conclusion: Our study highlighted the multifaceted factors influencing mask-wearing behavior in the post-COVID-19 era. Even after adjusting for various confounding factors, such as age, sex, and trust in the government, an association remained between affective risk perception, political ideology, and mask-wearing behavior. However, further research for psychological mechanisms is needed to foster a culture of preventive behaviors proportional to the risk of infection.
