RESUMEN

Atrazine is a widely used herbicide in agriculture, and it has garnered significant attention because of its potential risks to the environment and human health. The extensive utilization of atrazine, alongside its persistence in water and soil, underscores the critical need to develop safe and efficient removal strategies. This comprehensive review aims to spotlight atrazine's potential impact on ecosystems and public health, particularly its enduring presence in soil, water, and plants. As a known toxic endocrine disruptor, atrazine poses environmental and health risks. The review navigates through innovative removal techniques across soil and water environments, elucidating microbial degradation, phytoremediation, and advanced methodologies such as electrokinetic-assisted phytoremediation (EKPR) and photocatalysis. The review notably emphasizes the complex process of atrazine degradation and ongoing scientific efforts to address this, recognizing its potential risks to both the environment and human health.

RESUMEN

Both selenium (Se) and gibberellins (GA3) can alleviate cadmium (Cd) toxicity in plants. However, the application of Se and GA3 as foliar spray to against Cd stress on soybean and its related mechanisms have been poorly explored. Herein, this experiment evaluated the effects of Se and GA3 alone and combined application on soybean rhizosphere microenvironment, Cd accumulation and growth of soybean seedlings. The results revealed that both Se and GA3 can effectively decrease the accumulation of Cd in soybean seedlings. Foliar application of Se, GA3 and their combination reduced Cd contents in soybean seedlings respectively by 21.70 %, 27.53 % and 45.07 % when compared with the control treatment, suggest a synergistic effect of Se and GA3 in decreasing Cd accumulation. Se and GA3 also significantly increased diversity and abundance of the metabolites in rhizosphere, which consequently played an important role in shaping rhizosphere bacteria community and improve rhizosphere soil physicochemical properties of Cd contaminated soil, as well as decreased the Cd available forms contents but enhance the immobilized form levels. Overall, this study affords a novel approach on mitigating Cd accumulation in soybean seedlings which is attributed to Se and GA3 regulated interplay among rhizosphere soil metabolites, bacteria community and cadmium speciation.

RESUMEN

This study was completed to evaluate the relationship between tumor length and the prognosis of patients with pathological stage IA-IC esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC). Patients were identified from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program database (United States, 2006-2015). X-tile software and ROC analysis were mainly used to explore the best threshold of tumor length for dividing patients into different groups, and then propensity score matching (PSM) was used to balance other variables between groups. The primary outcome assessed was overall survival (OS). A total of 762 patients were identified, and 500 patients were left after PSM. Twenty millimeters were used as the threshold of tumor length. Patients with longer tumor lengths showed worse OS (median: 93 vs. 128 months; P = 0.006). Multivariable Cox regression analysis showed that longer tumor length was an independent risk factor (hazard ratio 1.512, 95% confidence interval, 1.158-1.974, P = 0.002). Tumor length has an impact on patients with pathological stage IA-IC EAC who undergo surgery alone. The prognostic value of the pathological stage group may be improved after combining it with tumor length and age.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy and chemoradiation have become essential adjuncts to improve the survival of patients with resectable esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) in the perioperative period. Although preoperative treatment plus surgery is commonly used, controversy remains regarding the optimal treatment strategy for patients with locally advanced ESCC. METHODS: A retrospective review of clinical stage II and III ESCC patients who underwent esophagectomy at Henan Cancer Hospital between October 2014 and October 2017 was performed. The patients were divided into a neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) group and an adjuvant chemotherapy (AC) group. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to exclude confounders. Survival was estimated using Kaplan‒Meier analysis and compared by the log-rank test. The Cox proportional hazards regression model was used for both the univariate and multivariate analyses. RESULTS: A total of 684 patients were enrolled, including 365 (53.4%) patients in the NAC group. After PSM, 294 pairs of patients were left. NAC prolonged the OS (not reached versus 57.3 months, P = 0.002) and DFS (57.2 vs. 36.4 months, P = 0.010) and decreased the total rate of recurrence (50.1% vs. 59.2%, P = 0.025) and local recurrence (27.9% vs. 36.7%, P = 0.022) compared with AC. The multivariable analyses showed that NAC plus surgery modality was an independent predictor for improved OS (HR: 0.582, 95% CI: 0.467-0.786, P = 0.001). CONCLUSION: NAC plus surgery prolonged OS and DFS, and significantly decreased the total rate of recurrence compared with surgery plus AC in patients with clinical stage II and III ESCC.

RESUMEN

SCOPE: The glucosinolate glucoraphanin from broccoli is converted to sulforaphane (SFN) or sulforaphane-nitrile (SFN-NIT) by plant enzymes or the gut microbiome. Human feeding studies typically observe high inter-individual variation in absorption and excretion of SFN, however, the source of this variation is not fully known. To address this, a human feeding trial to comprehensively evaluate inter-individual variation in the absorption and excretion of all known SFN metabolites in urine, plasma, and stool, and tested the hypothesis that gut microbiome composition influences inter-individual variation in total SFN excretion has been conducted. METHODS AND RESULTS: Participants (n = 55) consumed a single serving of broccoli or alfalfa sprouts and plasma, stool, and total urine are collected over 72 h for quantification of SFN metabolites and gut microbiome profiling using 16S gene sequencing. SFN-NIT excretion is markedly slower than SFN excretion (72 h vs 24 h). Members of genus Bifidobacterium, Dorea, and Ruminococcus torques are positively associated with SFN metabolite excretion while members of genus Alistipes and Blautia has a negative association. CONCLUSION: This is the first report of SFN-NIT metabolite levels in human plasma, urine, and stool following consumption of broccoli sprouts. The results help explain factors driving inter-individual variation in SFN metabolism and are relevant for precision nutrition.

RESUMEN

Understanding how microbes interact with each other is key to revealing the underlying role that microorganisms play in the host or environment and to identifying microorganisms as an agent that can potentially alter the host or environment. For example, understanding how the microbial interactions associate with parasitic infection can help resolve potential drug or diagnostic test for parasitic infection. To unravel the microbial interactions, existing tools often rely on graphical models to infer the conditional dependence of microbial abundances to represent their interactions. However, current methods do not simultaneously account for the discreteness, compositionality, and heterogeneity inherent to microbiome data. Thus, we build a new approach called "compositional graphical lasso" upon existing tools by incorporating the above characteristics into the graphical model explicitly. We illustrate the advantage of compositional graphical lasso over current methods under a variety of simulation scenarios and on a benchmark study, the Tara Oceans Project. Moreover, we present our results from the analysis of a dataset from the Zebrafish Parasite Infection Study, which aims to gain insight into how the gut microbiome and parasite burden covary during infection, thus uncovering novel putative methods of disrupting parasite success. Our approach identifies changes in interaction degree between infected and uninfected individuals for three taxa, Photobacterium, Gemmobacter, and Paucibacter, which are inversely predicted by other methods. Further investigation of these method-specific taxa interaction changes reveals their biological plausibility. In particular, we speculate on the potential pathobiotic roles of Photobacterium and Gemmobacter in the zebrafish gut, and the potential probiotic role of Paucibacter. Collectively, our analyses demonstrate that compositional graphical lasso provides a powerful means of accurately resolving interactions between microbiota and can thus drive novel biological discovery.

RESUMEN

Aging is a natural and complex process characterized by the gradual deterioration of tissue and physiological functions in the organism over time. Cell senescence, a hallmark of aging, refers to the permanent and irreversible cell cycle arrest of proliferating cells triggered by endogenous stimuli or environmental stresses. Eliminating senescent cells has been shown to extend the healthy lifespan. In this study, we established a progeria mouse model with telomerase deficiency and confirmed the presence of shortened telomere length and increased expression of aging markers p16INK4a and p21CIP1 in the organ tissues of G3 Tert-/- mice. We identified fisetin as a potent senolytic drug capable of reversing premature aging signs in telomerase-deficient mice. Fisetin treatment effectively suppressed the upregulation of aging markers p16INK4a and p21CIP1 and reduced collagen fiber deposition. Furthermore, we observed a significant elevation in the mRNA level of Stc1 in G3Tert-/- mice, which was reduced after fisetin treatment. Stc1 has been implicated in anti-apoptotic processes through the upregulation of the Akt signaling pathway. Our findings reveal that fisetin exerts its anti-aging effect by inhibiting the Akt signaling pathway through the suppression of Stc1 expression, leading to the apoptosis of senescent cells.

RESUMEN

Carbon nanotubes and their composite thermoelectric (TE) materials have significant advantages in supplying power to flexible electronics due to their high electrical conductivity, excellent flexibility, and facile preparation technology. In this work, stable n-type silver ammonia-polyethyleneimine/single-walled carbon nanotube ([Ag(NH3)2]+-PEI/SWCNT) composite films were facilely prepared by solution blending and vacuum-filtration methods. The results demonstrate that light silver ammonia doping optimizes the carrier concentration and carrier mobility of the composite film, and a maximum power factor (PF) of [Ag(NH3)2]+-PEI/SWCNT of 91.9 µW m-1 K-2 was obtained, which is higher than that of PEI/SWCNT (70.0 µW m-1 K-2). Furthermore, when the composite films were reduced by the NaBH4 solution, the Seebeck coefficient and the PF value were further increased to -45.5 µV K-1 and 115.8 µW m-1 K-2, respectively. For demonstration, a maximum output voltage of 13.8 mV and output power of 492 nW were achieved using a three p-n junction-based TE device constructed by [Ag(NH3)2]+-PEI/SWCNT at a temperature difference of 50 K. Thus, this study provides a metal complex ion doping strategy to improve thermoelectrical properties and air stability of the PEI/SWCNT composite films, which have potential applications in flexible electronics.

RESUMEN

No adjuvant treatment has been established for patients who remain at high risk of recurrence and incidental pathologic lymph node metastasis for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). In this open-label, multicenter, phase III, randomized controlled trial, ESCC patients who did not achieve pathologic complete response after neoadjuvant chemotherapy plus surgery and clinical T1-2 N0 patients with incidental pathologic lymph node metastasis following initial surgery were randomized at a 2:1 ratio to receive either a sintilimab regimen or observational management (NCT05495152). The primary end point was disease-free survival for all randomized patients. The results of this randomized controlled trial addressed controversy regarding the survival benefits of adjuvant sintilimab treatment for patients with resected locally advanced ESCC. Clinical Trial Registration: NCT05495152 (ClinicalTrials.gov).

RESUMEN

IMPORTANCE: Harmful algal blooms are among the most significant threats to drinking water safety. Blooms dominated by cyanobacteria can produce potentially harmful toxins and, despite intensive research, toxin production remains unpredictable. We measured gaseous molecules in Upper Klamath Lake, Oregon, over 2 years and used them to predict the presence and concentration of the cyanotoxin, microcystin, and microbial community composition. Subsets of gaseous compounds were identified that are associated with microcystin production during oxidative stress, pointing to ecosystem-level interactions leading to microcystin contamination. Our approach shows potential for gaseous molecules to be harnessed in monitoring critical waterways.

RESUMEN

Single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT)-based thermoelectric materials have been extensively studied in the field of flexible wearable devices due to their high flexibility and excellent electrical conductivity (σ). However, poor Seebeck coefficient (S) and high thermal conductivity limit their thermoelectric application. In this work, free-standing MoS2/SWCNT composite films with improved thermoelectric performance were fabricated by doping SWCNTs with MoS2 nanosheets. The results demonstrated that the energy filtering effect at the MoS2/SWCNT interface increased the S of composites. In addition, the σ of composites was also improved due to the reason that S-π interaction between MoS2 and SWCNTs made good contact between MoS2 and SWCNTs and improved carrier transport. Finally, the obtained MoS2/SWCNT showed a maximum power factor of 131.9 ± 4.5 µW m-1 K-2 at room temperature with a σ of 680 ± 6.7 S cm-1 and an S of 44.0 ± 1.7 µV K-1 at a MoS2/SWCNT mass ratio of 15:100. As a demonstration, a thermoelectric device composed of three pairs of p-n junctions was prepared, which exhibited a maximum output power of 0.43 µW at a temperature gradient of 50 K. Therefore, this work offers a simple method of enhancing the thermoelectric properties of SWCNT-based materials.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The purpose of this retrospective study was to define the pattern of lymph nodal metastases in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NCT) followed by esophagectomy and to evaluate its influence on prognosis. METHODS: A total of 398 patients with clinical stage T3N0 or T1-3N+ ESCC who underwent NCT and radical esophagectomy with two-field lymphadenectomy were included. The distribution and frequency of metastases were counted separately for each lymph node station. The ypN stage, number of positive lymph node stations and lymph node stations with a metastasis rate greater than 5% were analyzed by using univariate Cox regression, followed by separate multivariable Cox regression analyses after adjusting for various clinical factors. RESULTS: Lymph node metastases were most frequently observed in the right upper paratracheal (16.8%) and left gastric artery (13.1%) stations. Multivariable models controlling for clinical factors showed that ypN stage remained a significant independent predictor of survival (N1 vs. N0: hazard ratio [HR], 2.30, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.38-3.83, P < 0.001; N2 vs. N0: HR, 3.76, 95% CI 2.21-6.38, P < 0.001; N3 vs. N0: HR, 7.14, 95% CI 3.78-13.48, P < 0.001). The model from the multivariable analysis with the highest c-index score, indicating superior discriminatory preference, was ypN stage (c-index, 0.72). CONCLUSIONS: The pattern and influence of lymph node metastases after NCT will provide guidance on the extent of lymphadenectomy. Common positive lymph node stations for thoracic ESCC after NCT include the paratracheal, subcarinal, paraesophageal, paracardial, and left gastric artery stations.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The feasibility and safety of en bloc robot-assisted minimally invasive oesophagectomy (RAMIE) need to be verified. METHODS: Forty-seven patients who received conventional RAMIE and 31 who received modified en bloc RAMIE at Henan Cancer Hospital were included in the study cohort. We compared the perioperative outcomes of conventional RAMIE and modified en bloc RAMIE. RESULTS: Compared with the conventional RAMIE group, the en bloc RAMIE group yielded a higher total number of lymph nodes (p = 0.001), especially thoracic lymph nodes (p = 0.025) and left recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) lymph nodes (p = 0.005). No notable differences were found in the rate of total complications (p = 0.663) or RLN injury (p = 0.891) between the two groups. The preoperative and postoperative serological indicators were comparable between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Modified en bloc RAMIE was safe and feasible for patients with oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma and improved lymph node dissection, especially thoracic and left RLN lymph node dissection.

RESUMEN

Atrazine is used to control broad-leaved weeds in farmland and has negative impacts on soybean growth. Legume-rhizobium symbiosis plays an important role in regulating abiotic stress tolerance of plants, however, the mechanisms of rhizobia regulate the tolerance of soybean to atrazine based on the biochemical responses of the plant-soil system are limited. In this experiment, Glycine max (L.) Merr. Dongnong 252, planted in 20 mg kg-1 of atrazine-contaminated soil, was inoculated with Bradyrhizobium japonicum AC20, and the plant growth, rhizosphere soil microbial diversity and the expression of the genes related to soybean carbon and nitrogen metabolism were assessed. The results indicated that strain AC20 inoculation alleviated atrazine-induced growth inhibition via increasing the contents of leghemoglobin and total nitrogen in soybean seedlings. The psbA gene expression level of the soybean seedlings that inoculated strain AC20 was 1.4 times than that of no rhizobium inoculating treatments. Moreover, the inoculated AC20 increased the abundance of Acidobacteria and Actinobacteria in soybean rhizosphere. Transcriptome analysis demonstrated that strain AC20 regulated the genes expression of amino acid metabolism and carbohydrate metabolism of soybean seedlings. Correlation analysis between 16S rRNA and transcriptome showed that strain AC20 reduced Planctomycetes abundance so as to down-regulated the expression of genes Glyma. 13G087800, Glyma. 12G005100 and Glyma.12G098900 involved in starch synthesis pathway of soybean leaves. These results provide available information for the rhizobia application to enhance the atrazine tolerate in soybean seedlings.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to investigate the survival impact of the number of lymph nodes dissection (LND) in patients receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NCT) for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). We retrospectively analyzed the clinical pathological data and survival of 407 ESCC patients who underwent esophagectomy after NCT between January 2015 and December 2016. The relationship between the number of LNDs and 5-year overall survival (OS) or disease-free survival (DFS) was plotted by using restricted cubic spline analysis. A Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to identify prognostic factors of OS and DFS. We observed an obvious non-linear relationship between LND and the hazard ratios (HRs) for OS (P = 0.0015) and DFS (P < 0.001) of all the patients. In the multivariate analysis of OS and DFS, the number of LNDs (greater than 28 and less than 46) had a significant protective effect on survival (OS: HR: 0.61, 95% CI: 0.42-0.88, P = 0.007; DFS: HR: 0.50, 95% CI: 0.36-0.70, P < 0.001). For patients with nodal metastases, it was also an independent prognostic factor for OS (HR, 0.56, 95% CI, 0.35-0.90, P = 0.017) and DFS (HR, 0.42, 95% CI, 0.28-0.65, P < 0.001). Some degree of lymphadenectomy after NCT was beneficial in improving 5-year OS and DFS for ESCC patients with nodal metastases. For patients with nodal negativity, more extended lymphadenectomy did not improve patient survival.
