RESUMEN

Diamond is considered the most promising next-generation semiconductor material due to its excellent physical characteristics. It has been more than three decades since the discovery of a special structure named n-diamond. However, despite extensive efforts, its crystallographic structure and properties are still unclear. Here, we show that subdisordered structures in diamond provide an explanation for the structural feature of n-diamond. Monocrystalline diamond with subdisordered structures is synthesized via the chemical vapor deposition method. Atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy characterizations combined with the picometer-precision peak finder technology and diffraction simulations reveal that picometer-scale shifts of atoms within cells of diamond govern the subdisordered structures. First-principles calculations indicate that the bandgap of diamond decreases rapidly with increasing shifting distance, in accordance with experimental results. These findings clarify the crystallographic structure and electronic properties of n-diamond and provide new insights into the bandgap adjustment in diamond.

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) play important roles in epithelial-mesenchymal transformation (EMT) and tumor development. Previous studies have demonstrated that IL-6 promotes EMT, invasion, and metastasis in epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) cells by activating the STAT3/HIF-1α pathway. MicroRNA (miRNA) is non-coding small RNAs that also play an important role in tumor development. Notably, Let-7 and miR-200 families are prominently altered in EOC. However, whether IL-6 regulates the expression of Let-7 and miR-200 families through the STAT3/HIF-1α signaling to induce EMT in EOC remains poorly understood. In this study, we conducted in vitro and in vivo investigations using two EOC cell lines, SKOV3, and OVCAR3 cells. Our findings demonstrate that IL-6 down-regulates the mRNA levels of Let-7c and miR-200c while up-regulating their target genes HMGA2 and ZEB1 through the STAT3/HIF-1α signaling in EOC cells and in vivo. Additionally, to explore the regulatory role of HIF-1α on miRNAs, both exogenous HIF blockers YC-1 and endogenous high expression or inhibition of HIF-1α can be utilized. Both approaches can confirm that the downstream molecule HIF-1α inhibits the expression and function of Let-7c and miR-200c. Further mechanistic research revealed that the overexpression of Let-7c or miR-200c can reverse the malignant evolution of EOC cells induced by IL-6, including EMT, invasion, and metastasis. Consequently, our results suggest that IL-6 regulates the expression of Let-7c and miR-200c through the STAT3/HIF-1α pathway, thereby promoting EMT, invasion, and metastasis in EOC cells.

Dental caries is a widespread oral disease that poses a significant medical challenge. Traditional caries prevention methods, primarily the application of fluoride, often fall short in effectively destroying biofilms and preventing enamel demineralization, thereby providing limited efficacy in halting the progression of caries over time. To address this issue, we have developed a green and cost-effective synergistic strategy for the prevention of dental caries. By combining natural sodium phytate and chitosan, we have created chitosan-sodium phytate nanoparticles that offer both the antimicrobial properties of chitosan and the enamel demineralization-inhibiting capabilities of sodium phytate. In an ex vivo biofilm model of human teeth, we found that these nanoparticles effectively prevent biofilm buildup and acid damage to the mineralized tissue. Additionally, topical treatment of dental caries in rodent models has shown that these nanoparticles effectively suppress disease progression without negatively impacting oral microbiota diversity or causing harm to the gingival-mucosal tissues, unlike traditional prevention methods.

Purpose: This study aims to explore the serial mediating effect of stigma and depression on the association between social support and medication adherence. Patients and Methods: A cross-sectional survey was undertaken in the Changning District of Shanghai using a five-part questionnaire from August to December 2023. A convenient sampling method was employed, and 35 patients with schizophrenia were invited from each of the 9 streets in Changning District to participate in the survey, resulting in a total of 305 valid questionnaires collected. The questionnaire measured social support, stigma, depression, medication adherence, and demographic characteristics. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics, independent samples t-tests, ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, and the bootstrap method. Results: There was a direct and significantly positive association between social support and medication adherence (ß = 0.69, p < 0.001). Moreover, increased levels of stigma (ß = - 0.45, p = 0.013) and depression (ß = - 0.09, p = 0.017) were both associated with a decline in medication adherence. Bootstrapping analysis revealed that the association between social support and medication adherence operated indirectly through stigma (ß = 0.11, 95% CI: 0.03, 0.18). Additionally, social support was indirectly associated with medication adherence through depression (ß = 0.15, 95% CI: 0.04, 0.30). Further analysis indicated that social support had an indirect association with medication adherence through both stigma and depression (ß = 0.04, 95% CI: 0.01, 0.07). Conclusion: Stigma and depression serially mediate the association between social support and medication adherence among patients with schizophrenia. This serial multiple mediation model underscores the importance of integrating social support interventions with psychological interventions aimed at reducing stigma and depression, thereby effectively enhancing medication adherence in patients with schizophrenia.

Effective deep-dewatering is crucial for wastewater sludge management. Currently, the dominant methods focus on promoting cell lysis to release intracellular water, but these techniques often lead to secondary pollution and require stringent conditions, limiting their practical use. This study explores an innovative method using a commercially available complex quaternary ammonium salt surfactant, known as G-agent. This agent remarkably reduces the sludge water content from 98.6 % to 56.8 % with a low dosage (50 mg/g DS) and under neutral pH conditions. This approach surpasses Fenton oxidation in terms of dewatering efficiency and avoids the necessity for cell lysis and bound water release, thereby reducing the risk of secondary pollution in the filtrate, including heavy metals, nitrogen, phosphorus, and other contaminants. The G-agent plays a significant role in destabilizing flocs and enhancing flocculation during the conditioning and initial dewatering stages, effectively reducing the solid-liquid interfacial affinity of the sludge. In the compression filtration stage, the agent's solidification effect is crucial in forming a robust skeleton that improves pore connectivity within the filter cake, leading to increased water permeability, drainage performance and water flow-out efficiency. This facilitates deep dewatering of sludge without cell lysis. The study reveals that the G-agent primarily improves water flow-out efficiency rather than water flowability, indicating that cell lysis and bound water release are not indispensable prerequisites for sludge deep-dewatering. Furthermore, it presents an encouraging prospect for overcoming the limitations associated with conventional sludge deep-dewatering processes.

Connective tissue attaches to bone across an insertion with spatial gradients in components, microstructure, and biomechanics. Due to regional stress concentrations between two mechanically dissimilar materials, the insertion is vulnerable to mechanical damage during joint movements and difficult to repair completely, which remains a significant clinical challenge. Despite interface stress concentrations, the native insertion physiologically functions as the effective load-transfer device between soft tissue and bone. This review summarizes tendon, ligament, and meniscus insertions cross-sectionally, which is novel in this field. Herein, the similarities and differences between the three kinds of insertions in terms of components, microstructure, and biomechanics are compared in great detail. This review begins with describing the basic components existing in the four zones (original soft tissue, uncalcified fibrocartilage, calcified fibrocartilage, and bone) of each kind of insertion, respectively. It then discusses the microstructure constructed from collagen, glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), minerals and others, which provides key support for the biomechanical properties and affects its physiological functions. Finally, the review continues by describing variations in mechanical properties at the millimeter, micrometer, and nanometer scale, which minimize stress concentrations and control stretch at the insertion. In summary, investigating the contrasts between the three has enlightening significance for future directions of repair strategies of insertion diseases and for bioinspired approaches to effective soft-hard interfaces and other tough and robust materials in medicine and engineering.

OBJECTIVE: To three-dimensionally evaluate post-operative mandibular stability following bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomies between hybrid and non-hybrid rigid internal fixation techniques. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Seventy adults with skeletal class II deformity who underwent bilateral split sagittal osteotomy with mandibular advancement were included. Patients were divided into four groups based on their fixation techniques: hybrid technique (HT) groups I, II, and IV received a 4-hole 2 mm miniplate with either a bicortical screw (BS), additional 2 mm 4-hole miniplate, or two-hole miniplate, while non-HT group III received a 4-hole 2 mm miniplate with four mini-screws (MS). Measurements were taken pre-operatively (T0), immediately postoperatively (T1), and ≥1 year after surgery (T2) using 3D Slicer software. RESULTS: Age, sex, and follow-up period did not correlate significantly with postoperative relapse or stability. Significant differences were observed in the advancement on the right side between groups II, III, and IV and on the left side between groups I, III, and IV. However, the type of surgical intervention showed no significant effect on postoperative relapse and stability. All groups of fixations showed satisfactory stability with irrelevant relapse (< 2 mm or 2°). CONCLUSION: The study demonstrated satisfactory and comparable stability among different fixation groups on patients undergoing mandibular advancement following bilateral split sagittal osteotomy. The results highlighted the importance of considering the degree of advancement when planning orthognathic surgery and managing postoperative outcomes.

Meningomyelocele is one of the most severe forms of neural tube defects (NTDs) and the most frequent structural birth defect of the central nervous system. We assembled the Spina Bifida Sequencing Consortium to identify causes. Exome and genome sequencing of 715 parent-offspring trios identified six patients with chromosomal 22q11.2 deletions, suggesting a 23-fold increased risk compared with the general population. Furthermore, analysis of a separate 22q11.2 deletion cohort suggested a 12- to 15-fold increased NTD risk of meningomyelocele. The loss of Crkl, one of several neural tube-expressed genes within the minimal deletion interval, was sufficient to replicate NTDs in mice, where both penetrance and expressivity were exacerbated by maternal folate deficiency. Thus, the common 22q11.2 deletion confers substantial meningomyelocele risk, which is partially alleviated by folate supplementation.

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence has shown that circular RNAs (circRNAs) are involved in gastric cancer (GC) tumorigenesis. However, specific functional circRNAs in GC remain to be discovered, and their underlying mechanisms remain to be elucidated. METHODS: CircRNAs that were differentially expressed between GC tissues and controls were analyzed using a circRNA microarray dataset. The expression of circVDAC3 in GC was determined using quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), and the structural features of circVDAC3 were validated. Cell function assays and animal experiments were conducted to explore the effects of circVDAC3 on GC. Finally, bioinformatics analysis, fluorescent in situ hybridization, and dual luciferase assays were used to analyze the downstream mechanisms of circVDAC3. RESULTS: Our results showed that circVDAC3 was downregulated in GC and inhibited the proliferation and metastasis of GC cells. Mechanistically, circVDAC3 acts as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) of miR-592 and deregulates the repression of EIF4E3 by miR-592. EIF4E3 is downregulated in GC and overexpression of miR-592 or knockdown of EIF4E3 in circVDAC3-overexpressing cells weakens the anticancer effect of circVDAC3. CONCLUSION: Our study provides evidence that circVDAC3 affects the growth and metastasis of GC cells via the circVDAC3/miR-592/EIF4E3 axis. Our findings offer valuable insights into the mechanisms underlying GC tumorigenesis and suggest novel therapeutic strategies.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder commonly accompanied by gut dysfunction. EA has shown anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects. Here, we aim to explore whether EA can treat Parkinson's disease by restoring the intestinal barrier and modulating NLRP3 inflammasome. We applied 1-Methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) to establish a PD mouse model and EA at the GV16, LR3, and ST36 for 12 consecutive days. The open-field test results indicated that EA alleviated depression and behavioral defects, upregulated the expressions of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and blocked the accumulation of α-synuclein (α-syn) in the midbrain. Moreover, EA blocked the damage to intestinal tissues of PD mice, indicative of suppressed NLRP3 inflammasome activation and increased gut barrier integrity. Notably, the antibiotic-treated mouse experiment validated that the gut microbiota was critical in alleviating PD dyskinesia and intestinal inflammation by EA. In conclusion, this study suggested that EA exhibited a protective effect against MPTP-induced PD by alleviating behavioral defects, reversing the block of motor dysfunction, and improving the gut barrier by modulating intestinal NLRP3 inflammasome. Above all, this study could provide novel insights into the pathogenesis and therapy of PD.

Euwallacea interjectus, a recently discovered pest in poplar plantations, poses a significant economic threat due to its role in causing widespread tree mortality. This pest's cryptic behaviour has hindered research and control efforts, making laboratory rearing a valuable tool for studying its development and biology. We investigated the development period and biological characteristics of E. interjectus using artificial diets and fungal medium. Our findings revealed that the development time for eggs, larvae, and pupae averages approximately 6, 18, and 6 days, respectively. Notably, first and second instar larvae displayed peak moulting periods at 3.45 ± 0.64 SD and 7.92 ± 1.77 SD days, respectively. Furthermore, we measured head capsule widths of postmolt larvae, yielding values of 318.02 ± 7.38 SD µm for first-instar larvae, 403.01 ± 11.08 SD µm for second-instar larvae, and 549.54 ± 20.74 SD µm for third-instar larvae. Our research also uncovered a positive correlation between the number of progeny (eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults) and the mean length of the gallery system. Interestingly, the haplodiploid reproductive strategy did not significantly affect the number of offspring produced by the foundress. Additionally, we observed that foundresses displayed higher fecundity when subjected to nutrient-rich diets as compared to nutrient-poor diets. Our results will deepen our understanding of the biology of E. interjectus and provide criteria for larval instar classification. Additionally, managing nutrient availability within the colony could be considered a viable approach to regulating population size.

Organizational resilience is a key concept in the study of sustainable corporate growth and indicates an organization's capacity to recover from adversity. It plays a crucial role in responding to uncertain crises. In recent years, academic interest in organizational resilience has increasingly gained prominence. This research uses CiteSpace and VOSviewer to provide a thorough visual analysis of pertinent international literature based on 342 pieces of closely linked literature about organizational resilience. The findings suggest that organizational resilience research is currently experiencing a development phase. Within this field, there is a substantial number of scholars involved, with the most prolific among them including Aleksic Aleksandar, Prayag Girish, and Griffiths Andrew. The networks of collaboration among these authors, nevertheless, are very scattered. Co-citation network research reveals the academics with the biggest sway in the field. Organizational resilience, conservation of resources theory, crisis management, corporate social responsibility, and emergency management are identified as research hotspots within the keyword co-citation network. Furthermore, to determine which countries and regions are the most influential, this study has created a cooperative network among them. China, the United States, and England are the top three nations with articles published. Not only are the highly cited journals respected in the management sector, but they also showcase noteworthy research accomplishments within the field. The purpose of this study is to investigate potential avenues for future research and offer helpful sources for choosing research subjects and developing theoretical frameworks in this area. The analysis is highly valuable as a reference for research on organizational resilience in different settings in the future.

A macrocyclic compound, hemicucurbit[6]uril (HemiQ[6]), is employed as the carbon source to produce a novel sort of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with blue fluorescence in aqueous solution. The CQDs are fully identified by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), zeta potential, ultraviolet/visible (UV-vis) and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). The nanomaterial is developed for the analysis of Pb2+ in the light of the Resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS) changes with the increasing Pb2+ concentration. The proposed probe emerges a high selectivity to Pb2+ and excellent sensitivity in the linear concentration range of 0-6 µM with a detection limit low to 0.42 µM, which is superior to the previous values of Pb2+ sensors, as well as the good anti-interference ability is confirmed by the specifical response to Pb2+ in the presence of other metal cations. Therefore, the proposed analysis of Pb2+ is explored for the application in real samples of tap water and lake water, in satisfied results of acceptable recoveries.

Objectives: In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of randomized clinical trials of BTX-A combined with ESWT for the treatment of post-stroke spasticity. This has made it possible to observe the benefits of combination therapy in clinical practice. Therefore, this paper reviews the effectiveness of BTX-A in combination with ESWT for the treatment of post-stroke spasticity. Methods: By October 2023, a systematic review was conducted in the databases PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, Medline, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wan Fang Database, China Biology Medicine disc and China Science and Technology Journal Database were systematically searched. We included randomized controlled trials that reported outcome metrics such as MAS, FMA, and MBI score. Studies were excluded if MAS was not reported. The quality of the included studies was assessed by the Cochrane Collaboration's tool for assessing risk of bias, and the AMSTAR quality rating scale was selected for self-assessment. Results: A total of 70 articles were included in the initial search, and six were ultimately included. The results of the included studies showed that the combination therapy was effective in reducing MAS scores and improving FMA and MBI scores in patients with spasticity compared to the control group. Combination therapy has also been shown to improve joint mobility and reduce pain in spastic limbs. Conclusion: Cumulative evidence from clinical randomized controlled trial studies suggests that the combination therapy is effective in reducing lower limb spasticity and improving mobility after stroke. However, more clinical trials are still needed to corroborate the evidence regarding the efficacy of BTX-A combined with shockwave therapy. BACKGROUND: Identifying effective therapeutic targets is of great significance for improving early diagnosis and prognosis of sepsis. This study aims to explore the role of LINC00265 in sepsis. METHODS: This is a retrospective study based on data collected from sepsis patients in 2017-2018. The basic clinical information of all subjects were collected and the survival of the sepsis patients within 28 days was monitored. The expression of LINC00265 was detected by qPCR. Receiver operating characteristics and Cox regression analysis were used to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic value of LINC00265 in patients with sepsiss. RESULTS: Compared with the healthy population, the expression of LINC00265 was significantly upregulated in patients with sepsis distinguishing them from healthy individuals. This expression was patients with sepsis positively correlated with the APACHEII score, tumor necrosis factor α, interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-8, and IL-17, and negatively correlated with IL-10. LINC00265 expression was upregulated in the sepsis death group, predicting a lower rate in patients with patients with sepsis. The higher expression of LINC00265 was correlated with lower cumulative patient sursvival. CONCLUSION: LINC00265 is upregulated in patients with sepsis, and its high expression predicts increased disease severity, heightened inflammation, and a poorer prognosis.

Animals employ different strategies to establish mating boundaries between closely related species, with sex pheromones often playing a crucial role in identifying conspecific mates. Many of these pheromones have carbon-carbon double bonds, making them vulnerable to oxidation by certain atmospheric oxidant pollutants, including ozone. Here, we investigate whether increased ozone compromises species boundaries in drosophilid flies. We show that short-term exposure to increased levels of ozone degrades pheromones of Drosophila melanogaster, D. simulans, D. mauritiana, as well as D. sechellia, and induces hybridization between some of these species. As many of the resulting hybrids are sterile, this could result in local population declines. However, hybridization between D. simulans and D. mauritiana as well as D. simulans and D. sechellia results in fertile hybrids, of which some female hybrids are even more attractive to the males of the parental species. Our experimental findings indicate that ozone pollution could potentially induce breakdown of species boundaries in insects.

Objective: To investigate the changes in the wavelet entropy during wake and different sleep stages in patients with insomnia disorder. Methods: Sixteen patients with insomnia disorder and sixteen normal controls were enrolled. They underwent scale assessment and two consecutive nights of polysomnography (PSG). Wavelet entropy analysis of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals recorded from all participants in the two groups was performed. The changes in the integral wavelet entropy (En) and individual-scale wavelet entropy (En(a)) during wake and different sleep stages in the two groups were observed, and the differences between the two groups were compared. Results: The insomnia disorder group exhibited lower En during the wake stage, and higher En during the N3 stage compared with the normal control group (all P < 0.001). In terms of En(a), patients with insomnia disorder exhibited lower En(a) in the ß and α frequency bands during the wake stage compared with normal controls (ß band, P < 0.01; α band, P < 0.001), whereas they showed higher En(a) in the ß and α frequency bands during the N3 stage than normal controls (ß band, P < 0.001; α band, P < 0.001). Conclusion: Wavelet entropy can reflect the changes in the complexity of EEG signals during wake and different sleep stages in patients with insomnia disorder, which provides a new method and insights about understanding of pathophysiological mechanisms of insomnia disorder. Wavelet entropy provides an objective indicator for assessing sleep quality.

The emergence of multi-drug-resistant (MDR) pathogens has considerably challenged the development of new drugs. Probiotics that inhibit MDR pathogens offer advantages over chemical antibiotics and drugs due to their increased safety and fewer side effects. This study reported that Weissella cibaria P-8 isolated from pickles showed excellent antibacterial activity against intestinal pathogens, particularly the antibacterial activity against MDR Escherichia coli B2 was the highest. This study showed that the survival rates of W. cibaria P-8 at pH 2.0 and 0.3% bile salt concentration were 72% and 71.56%, respectively, and it still had antibacterial activity under pepsin, trypsin, protease K, and catalase hydrolysis. Moreover, W. cibaria P-8 inhibits the expression of inflammatory factors interleukin-1ß, tumor necrosis factor-α, and interleukin-6, upregulates the interleukin-10 level, and increases total antioxidant capacity and superoxide dismutase enzyme activity in serum. W. cibaria P-8 also efficiently repairs intestinal damage caused by E. coli infection. The gut microbiota analysis demonstrated that W. cibaria P-8 colonizes the intestine and increases the abundance of some beneficial intestinal microorganisms, particularly Prevotella. In conclusion, W. cibaria P-8 alleviated MDR E. coli-induced intestinal inflammation by regulating inflammatory cytokine and enzyme activity and rebalancing the gut microbiota, which could provide the foundation for subsequent clinical analyses and probiotic product development.

Antimony (Sb) and sulfate are two common pollutants in Sb mine drainage and Sb-containing textile wastewater. In this paper, it was found that iron­carbon (Fe/C) enhanced Sb(V) removal from sulfate-rich wastewater by anaerobic granular sludge (AnGS). Sulfate inhibited Sb(V) removal (S + Sb, k = 0.101), while Fe/C alleviated the inhibition and increased Sb(V) removal rate by 2.3 times (Fe/C + S + Sb, k = 0.236). Fe/C could promote the removal of Sb(III), and Sb(III) content decreased significantly after 8 h. Meanwhile, Fe/C enhanced the removal of sulfate. The 3D-EEM spectrum of supernatant in Fe/C + S + Sb group (at 24 h) showed that Fe/C stimulated the production of soluble microbial products (SMP) in wastewater. SMP alleviated the inhibition of sulfate, promoting AnGS to reduce Sb(V). Sb(V) could be reduced to Sb(III) both by AnGS and sulfides produced from sulfate reduction. Further analysis of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and AnGS showed that Fe/C increased the adsorbed Sb(V) in EPS and the c-type cytochrome content in AnGS, which may be beneficial for Sb(V) removal. Sb(V) reduction in Fe/C + S + Sb group may be related to the genus Acinetobacter, while in Sb group, several bacteria may be involved in Sb(V) reduction, such as Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas and Corynebacterium. This study provided insights into Fe/C-enhanced Sb(V) removal from sulfate-rich wastewater.
