RESUMEN

Two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnets have attracted widespread attention for promising applications in compact spintronic devices. However, the controlled synthesis of high-quality, large-sized, and ultrathin 2D magnets via facile, economical method remains challenging. Herein, we develop a hydrogen-tailored chemical vapor deposition approach to fabricating 2D Cr5Te8 ferromagnetic nanosheets. Interestingly, the time period of introducing hydrogen was found to be crucial for controlling the lateral size, and a Cr5Te8 single-crystalline nanosheet of lateral size up to ∼360 µm with single-unit-cell thickness has been obtained. These samples exhibit a leading role of domain wall nucleation in governing the magnetization reversal process, providing important references for optimizing the performances of associated devices. The nanosheets also show notable magnetotransport response, including nonmonotonous magnetic-field-dependent magnetoresistance and sizable anomalous Hall resistivity, demonstrating Cr5Te8 as a promising material for constructing high-performance magnetoelectronic devices. This study presents a breakthrough of large-sized CVD-grown 2D magnetic materials, which is indispensable for constructing 2D spintronic devices.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pancreatic fistulas (POPFs) are prevalent and major postoperative complications of distal pancreatectomy (DP). There are numerous ways to manage the pancreatic stump. However, no single approach has been shown to be consistently superior. Moreover, the potential role of robotic systems in reducing POPFs has received little attention. METHODS: The clinical data of 119 patients who had consecutively received robotic distal pancreatectomy between January 2019 and December 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were divided into two groups according to the method of handling the pancreatic stump. The attributes of the patients and the variables during the perioperative period were compared. RESULTS: The analysis included 72 manual sutures and 47 stapler procedures. The manual suture group had a shorter operative time (removing installation time) than the stapler group (125.25 ± 63.04 min vs 153.30 ± 62.03 min, p = 0.019). Additionally, the manual suture group had lower estimated blood loss (50 mL vs 100 mL, p = 0.009) and a shorter postoperative hospital stay. There were no significant differences in the incidence of clinically relevant POPFs between the two groups (18.1% vs 23.4%, P > 0.05). No perioperative death occurred in either group. CONCLUSION: The manual suturing technique was shown to have an incidence of POPFs similar to the stapler technique in robotic distal pancreatectomy and to be safe and feasible.

Nitrate pollution of groundwater has become an increasingly serious environmental problem that poses a great threat to aquatic ecosystems and to human health. Previous studies have shown that solid-phase humin (HM) can act as an additional electron donor to support microbial denitrification in the bioremediation of nitrate-contaminated groundwater where electron donor is deficient. However, the electron-donating capacities of HMs vary widely. In this study, we introduced ferrihydrite and prepared ferrihydrite-humin (Fh-HM) coprecipitates via biotic means to strengthen their electron-donating capacities. The spectroscopic results showed that the crystal phase of Fh did not change after coprecipitation with HM in the presence of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, and iron may have complexed with the organic groups of HM. The Fh-HM coprecipitate prepared with an optimal initial Fh-HM mass ratio of 14:1 enhanced the microbial denitrification of Pseudomonas stutzeri with an electron-donating capacity 2.4-fold higher than that of HM alone, and the enhancement was not caused by greater bacterial growth. The alginate bead embedding assay indicated that the oxidation pathway of Fh-HM coprecipitate was mainly through direct contact between P. stutzeri and the coprecipitate. Further analyses suggested that quinone and organic-complexed Fe were the main electron-donating fractions of the coprecipitate. The results of the column experiments demonstrated that the column filled with Fh-HM-coated quartz sand exhibited a higher denitrification rate than the one filled with quartz sand, indicating its potential for practical applications.

Pancreatic cancer is the seventh leading cause of cancer-related deaths, and chemotherapy is one of the most important treatments for pancreatic cancer. Unfortunately, pancreatic cancer cells can block chemotherapy drugs from entering the tumor. This is owing to interactions between the tumor's environment and the cancer cells. Here, we review the latest research on the mechanisms by which pancreatic cancer cells block the chemotherapy drug, gemcitabine. The results of our review can help identify potential therapeutic targets for the blocking of gemcitabine by pancreatic cancer cells and may provide new strategies to help chemotherapy drugs penetrate tumors.

Nitrate contamination of groundwater is a global problem. Enhanced biological nitrate reduction by liquid organics combined with low-cost natural materials (as electron donors) can cost-effectively remove nitrate from groundwater. Dissolved Mn(II) as an electron donor has been thoroughly investigated to support microbial nitrate reduction. However, most Mn in soil and sediments is in solid form, and the ability of solid-phase natural manganese oxide ore (NMO) as electron donor and for supporting microbial nitrate reduction is unknown. Therefore, a microcosm experiment was conducted to bridge this gap in knowledge. The results demonstrated that microbial nitrate reduction (mainly converted to nitrite) was enhanced by NMO (rich in cryptomelane). The electrochemical and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses suggested that NMO may be oxidized by microbial metabolism. Illumina Miseq sequencing results indicated that Acidovorax spp. played a crucial role in NMO-supported nitrate reduction. Further Phylogenetic Investigation of Communities by Reconstruction of Unobserved States (PICRUSt) analyses indicated that bacterial extracellular electron transfer may be one of the mechanisms for the microbial NMO oxidation. The results of our study highlight the potential importance of NMO in nitrate reduction in the natural environment and may pave the way for NMO-assisted technology for nitrate removal from groundwater with less usage of organic electron donors.

2D ferroelectrics with robust polar order in the atomic-scale thickness at room temperature are needed to miniaturize ferroelectric devices and tackle challenges imposed by traditional ferroelectrics. These materials usually have polar point group structure regarding as a prerequisite of ferroelectricity. Yet, to introduce polar structure into otherwise nonpolar 2D materials for producing ferroelectricity remains a challenge. Here, by combining first-principles calculations and experimental studies, it is reported that the native Ga vacancy-defects located in the asymmetrical sites in cubic defective semiconductor α-Ga2 Se3 can induce polar structure. Meanwhile, the induced polarization can be switched in a moderate energy barrier. The switched polarization is observed in 2D α-Ga2 Se3 nanoflakes of ≈4 nm with a high switching temperature up to 450 K. Such polarization switching could arise from the displacement of Ga vacancy between neighboring asymmetrical sites by applying an electric field. This work removes the point group limit for ferroelectricity, expanding the range of 2D ferroelectrics into the native defective semiconductors.

The incidence and mortality of gastric cancer ranked 5th and 3rd worldwide, respectively, in 2018, and the incidence of gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma increased over the past 40 years. Radical resection and lymph node dissection is the preferred treatment for gastric cancer. Proximal gastrectomy or total gastrectomy is usually performed for gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma and upper gastric cancer. Owing to the resection of the cardia structures, the incidence of reflux esophagitis increases significantly after proximal gastrectomy and total gastrectomy, resulting in poor postoperative quality of life. To reduce the incidence of reflux esophagitis and improve patients' postoperative quality of life, various methods to preserve the function of the cardia or to perform anti-reflux reconstruction have emerged. In this manuscript, we systematically introduced the advantages and problems of various anti-reflux anastomotic method after proximal gastrectomy, and cardia-preserving gastrectomy including endoscopic resection (ER), local gastrectomy by gastroscopy combined with laparoscopy, segmental gastrectomy, subtotal gastrectomy, and cardia-preserving radical gastrectomy. Cardia-preserving radical gastrectomy has the advantage of more thorough lymph node dissection and wider indications than those for subtotal gastrectomy. However, the clinical efficacy of cardia-preserving radical gastrectomy requires verification in prospective and controlled clinical trials. Cardia-preserving radical gastrectomy is a promising approach as one of the more reasonable anti-reflux surgeries.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the alteration of pattens of anatomical and functional connectivity (FC) of posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with cognitive dysfunction and the relationship between the connection strengths and cognitive state. METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 20 PD patients with mild cognitive impairment (PD-MCI), 13 PD patients with normal cognition (PD-NC) and 13 healthy controls (HCs). By collecting, preprocessing and FC analyzing resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) data, we extracted default mode network (DMN) patterns, compared the differences in DMN between the three groups and the analyzed the correlation between FC value with the commonly used neuropsychological testing. RESULTS: The PD-MCI showed significant worse performances in general cognition, and PD-NC and HCs showed comparable performances of cognitive function. Cognitive-related differences in DMN were detected in the bilateral precuneus (BPcu). Compared with the HCs, PD-NC and PD-MCI showed significantly decreased FC within BPcu (both P < 0.001). For PD-MCI, the rho of the Fisher's Z-transformed FC (zFC) value within BPcu with the TMTA, DSST and CFT-20min were 0.50, 0.66 and 0.47, respectively. For PD-NC, the rho of the zFC value within BPcu with the MMSE was 0.58. DISCUSSION: BPcu was the cognitive-related region in DMN. As cognition declines, FC within BPcu weakens. For PD-MCI, the higher the FC values within BPcu were likely to be related to the better the performances of TMTA, DSST and CFT-20 min DR, which needs to be further confirmed by large-sample studies.

To investigate spatial patterns of intrinsic neural activity of depressed patients with vascular risk factors using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and to examine the relationship between regional activity abnormalities and symptom severity factor, we analyzed spatial patterns of spontaneous brain activity in 19 depressed patients with vascular risk factors and 18 healthy subjects. Intrinsic brain activity was measured by the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) of the resting-state blood oxygen level dependent signal. Depressed patients with vascular risk factors showed decrease in ALFF in the limbic-cortical-striatal-pallidal-thalamic circuit. Specifically, the altered ALFF values (i.e., left insula and right superior frontal gyrus) were significantly correlated with depression severity in the depressed group. In addition, higher ALFF values in the right middle temporal gyrus and right superior temporal gyrus were observed in depressed patients with vascular risk factors. Our findings reveal distinct functional patterns of abnormal brain activity in depressed patients with vascular risk factors and have implications for the understanding of the pathophysiology of this understudied population.
