RESUMEN
BACKGROUND: Segmental testicular infarction is a rare condition that often occurs in the upper pole of the left testicle and usually presents with acute onset of scrotal pain. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound and MR are essential for diagnosing and differentiating segmental testicular infarction in clinical practice, and conservative treatment can only be adopted after a definitive diagnosis. In the present case, after conservative treatment, the infarct volume was reduced, the blood flow around the infarct was increased, and blood flow signals appeared in the infarct. We performed a correlation analysis to investigate the causes of these changes. CASE PRESENTATION: A 33-year-old male, without any specific disease history, was admitted to the hospital with a 5-day history of left testicular pain, and the imaging showed focal necrosis of the left testicle with hemorrhage. He was diagnosed with segmental testicular infarction after differentiating and excluding it from malignant tumors. Conservative medical treatment was given, and the symptoms of testicular pain were relieved after treatment. After discharge, regular reexamination at follow-ups showed that the infarct's size was reduced, the blood flow around the infarct was increased, and blood flow signals appeared in the infarct. CONCLUSION: Conservative treatment has become the standard treatment currently adopted after confirming the diagnosis of segmental testicular infarction through contrast-enhanced ultrasound and MR. The blood flow changes in and around the focus of testicular infarction can be related to various factors. At present, relevant conclusions of the underlying mechanisms were mainly deduced from infarction studies of other related organs such as the heart and brain; thus, the specific pathological mechanism needs further experimental verification.

After spinal cord injury, the number of glial cells and motor neurons expressing bone morphogenetic protein 7 (BMP7) increases, indicating that upregulation of BMP7 can promote nerve repair. We, therefore, tested whether direct injection of BMP7 into acutely injured rat spinal cord can affect neurological recovery. Allen's impactor was used to create spinal cord injury at T10. The injury site was then injected with 50 ng BMP7 (BMP7 group) or physiological saline (control group) for 7 consecutive days. Electrophysiological examination showed that the amplitude of N1 in motor evoked potentials (MEP) decreased after spinal cord injury. At 8 weeks post-operation, the amplitude of N1 in the BMP7 group was remarkably higher than that at 1 week post-operation and was higher than that of the control group. Basso, Beattie, Bresnahan scale (BBB) scores, hematoxylin-eosin staining, and western blot assay showed that at 1, 2, 4 and 8 weeks post-operation, BBB scores were increased; Nissl body staining was stronger; the number of Nissl-stained bodies was increased; the number of vacuoles gradually decreased; the number of synapses was increased; and the expression of neuronal marker, neurofilament protein 200, was increased in the hind limbs of the BMP7 group compared with the control group. Western blot assay showed that the expression of GFAP protein in BMP7 group and control group did not change significantly and there was no significant difference between the BMP7 and control groups. These data confirmed that local injection of BMP7 can promote neuronal regeneration after spinal cord injury and promote recovery of motor function in rats.
RESUMEN
Pseudorabies (PR, Aujeszky's disease) is an acute, highly contagious viral disease resulting in major economic losses to the swine industry. PR is endemic in wild and domestic animals, although its natural host is the pig. Here, we report an outbreak of PR in foxes on a fur-producing farm in Yuncheng county, Shandong, China, that were fed pig offal. The diagnosis of PR was based on nervous signs and standard PCR methods and by isolation of PRV from fox brain tissue in Vero cells. The diagnosis was confirmed by an indirect immunofluorescence assay and electron microscopy. Phylogenetic analysis of a partial (804 nt) viral glycoprotein gC gene sequence indicated that it was likely to be a field strain closely related to a cluster of PRV previously identified in China.

3-Hydroxyalkanoic acids (3HA) are precious precursors for synthesis of value added chemicals. According to their carbon chain lengths, 3HA can be divided into two groups: short-chain-length (SCL) 3HA consisting of 3-5 carbon atoms and medium-chain-length (MCL) 3HA containing 6-14 carbon atoms. To produce MCL 3HA, a metabolic engineered pathway expressing tesB gene, a thioesterase encoding gene that has been reported to catalyze acyl-CoA to free fatty acids, was constructed in Pseudomonas entomophila L48. When tesB of Escherichia coli encoding thioesterase II was introduced into polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) synthase and ß-oxidation pathway deleted mutant of P. entomophila LAC31 derived from wild type P. entomophila L48, 6.65g/l 3-hydroxytetradecanoic acid (3HTD) and 4.6g/l 3-hydroxydodecanoic acid (3HDD) were obtained, respectively, when tetradecanoic acid or dodecanoic acid as related carbon sources was added in shake flask cultures. Moreover, 1.8g/l of 3-hydroxydecanoic (3HD) acid was also produced by P. entomophila LAC31 harboring PTE1 gene cloned from Saccharomyces cerevisiae using corresponding fatty acid decanoic acid. Interestingly, shake flask studies indicated that PTE1 harboring strain showed advantages over tesB expressing one for 3HDD and 3HD production, while tesB favored 3HTD production by P. entomophila LAC31. For the first time our study revealed that fine chemicals 3HTD, 3HDD or 3HD could be efficiently produced by metabolic engineered ß-oxidation in Pseudomonas spp grown on related fatty acids.

A medium-chain-length (MCL) polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) producer Pseudomonas entomophila L48 was investigated for microbial production of 3-hydroxydodecanote homopolymer. Pseudomonas entomophila L48 was found to produce MCL PHA consisting of 3-hydroxyhexanoate (3HHx), 3-hydroxyoctanoate (3HO), 3-hydroxydecanoate (3HD), and 3-hydroxydodecanoate (3HDD) from related carbon sources fatty acids. In this study, some of the genes encoding key enzymes in ß-oxidation cycle of P. entomophila such as 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase, 3-ketoacyl-CoA thiolase, and acetyl-CoA acetyltransferase were deleted to study the relationship between ß-oxidation and PHA synthesis in P. entomophila. Among the mutants constructed, P. entomophila LAC26 accumulated over 90 wt % PHA consisting of 99 mol % 3HDD. A fed-batch fermentation process carried out in a 6 L automatic fermentor produced 7.3 g L(-1) PHA consisting of over 97 mol % 3HDD fraction. Properties of MCL PHA were significantly improved along with increasing 3HDD contents. P(2.1 mol % 3HD-co-97.9 mol % 3HDD) produced by P. entomophila LAC25 had the widest temperature range between T(g) and T(m), which were -49.3 and 82.4 °C, respectively, in all MCL PHA reported so far. The new type of PHA also represented high crystallinity caused by side-chain crystallization compared with short side chain PHA. For the first time, P(3HDD) homopolymers were obtained.
