This article identifies the multifaceted challenges that hinder optimal oral health among children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). While dental care is a fundamental aspect of overall well-being, children with ASD encounter unique obstacles that often go unnoticed. Drawing from a comprehensive review of existing literature and insights from healthcare professionals, this article explores the sensory sensitivities, communication difficulties, and behavioral issues that contribute to suboptimal oral hygiene in this demographic. We also discuss the critical role of caregivers, dentists, and educators in addressing these challenges, emphasizing the importance of early intervention and tailored strategies to improve the oral health of children with ASD. By shedding light on these obstacles, this article aims to foster a more inclusive and holistic approach to oral healthcare for children with ASD, ultimately enhancing their overall quality of life.
RESUMEN
OBJECTIVES: Teledentistry has emerged as a crucial tool to address oral health needs amidst social distancing measures and lockdowns. Teledentistry during COVID-19 underscores its potential as an adaptive solution, transforming the delivery of dental care and providing a platform for maintaining oral health while prioritizing public safety. The purpose of this study is to investigate the views of Chennai dental professionals on teledentistry, which may serve as a foundation for advancements in patient care and virtual dentistry in the future, and to evaluate awareness, usefulness, and data security regarding telemedicine among Chennai dental professionals using a pretested questionnaire. METHODS: By distributing a pretested web-based questionnaire to licensed dental professionals in Chennai, a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted. The results were statistically analyzed and evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 90 dentists in Chennai responded to the questionnaire, out of which 65 (72.2%) were aware of teledentistry and 32 (35.6%) practiced teledentistry. Around 25 to 29 (30%-37%) dentists were very much concerned about obtaining patients' consent, digital forgery, confidentiality, and hardware reliability in teledentistry. CONCLUSION: This is the first kind of study ever done among dentists in Chennai, which shows enormous work is required to create awareness and knowledge among dental professionals. To inform dentists and the general public about teledentistry, targeted advertisements pertaining to the same are required.

Introduction Utilization is the actual attendance of people at oral healthcare facilities to receive treatment. This study aimed to determine the perceived oral health care needs and barriers to utilizing dental services among rural populations. Materials and methods A cross-sectional survey using a questionnaire was designed to identify the perceived oral health care needs and obstacles to accessing dental facilities and their utility among rural populations. The sample size was set at 570. A data collection sheet was used to collect the required data, which included informed consent, demographic details, and the questionnaire.A pretested and validated questionnaire was used in the study. Result Among the 570 respondents, 43.3% of the population had experienced toothache, out of which 67.6% perceived the need for dental care. Only around 37.5% reported that their dental needs were met during the past year. Dental expenses were significantly related to access to the dentist. Conclusion This survey revealed that the majority of the population tends to utilize the available services only when absolutely necessary. High dental service costs and inadequate knowledge about oral problems act as major barriers.
