Magnetic circular dichroism of 3d5/2 --> 2p3/2 resonant inelastic X-ray scattering at the Ho L(III)-edge in Ho3Fe5O12.

Magnetic Circular Dichroism (MCD) of Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) of 3d(5/2) --> 2p(3/2) decay (Ho Lalpha1) was measured at the Ho L(III)-edge in Ho3Fe5O12. The MCD-RIXS, in which the intermediate state has the 2p4f(n+1) configuration due to the quadrupolar transition of 2p --> 4f, was also observed at the pre-edge region of the Ho L(III)-edge. The obvious superposition of two peaks, which comes from the high-energy off-resonant Raman scattering and the fluorescence, could be found in both the RIXS and the MCD-RIXS when the energy of the incoming X-ray was 7eV higher than the white line. The dependence of the integration of the MCD-RIXS spectra on the incident x-ray energy could roughly reproduce the MCD of X-ray absorption spectra (XAS).

Resolution of a position-sensitive proportional-counter with a resistive anode wire of carbon fiber

Theoretical and experimental analyses have been performed to examine the position resolution of a proportional counter with a 7-microm diameter carbon fiber as a resistive anode, which is used to encode one-dimensional positions of incident photons according to the charge-division method. These analyses have clearly shown that the carbon fiber is applicable to the position sensing of the order of 100-200 microm as long as the filled gas is pressurized at near 10 atm.

A case of an interstitial tandem direct duplication of long arm of chromosome 4: 46, XY, dup (4) (q25q31.3) de novo.

We report a 4 2/12-year-old Japanese boy with a de novo direct tandem dup (4) (q25q31.3). The major clinical picture includes postnatal growth and psychomotor retardation, thick eye-lashes, a cleft lip, and large and prominent helix and antitragus. He did not have any hearing deficit. His eyegrounds were normal. There was no organ malformations including brain, kidney, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, urinary bladder, stomach, and heart. Routine hematological tests, blood chemistry including thyroid hormones, and urinalysis including urinary screening tests for congenital metabolic disorders showed normal results. He showed an electroencephalographic abnormality which could have resulted from mild aseptic meningitis at 2 months. Our case supports the idea that the association of thumb and renal deformities in duplication 4q syndrome is related to the region 4q22-q23 as many researchers have already pointed out.

Production of centrifugal fields greater than 100 million times gravity.

A high-speed rotation instrument to produce centrifugal fields greater than 100 million times gravity has been constructed. Small, solid, spherical high-carbon chromium steel rotors are suspended magnetically in high vacuum and spun by a rotating magnetic field. It is found that the spinning rotor explodes when the calculated average value of stress in the meridian plane reaches about 1.2 times the tensile strength of the material. The maximum speed of rotation so far achieved for more than a few days without bursting was obtained with a rotor of 1.50 mm diameter. The speed of 2.11 x 10(5) rev/s corresponded to a centrifugal field of 1.34 x 10(8) times gravity. Our instrument will find application in the study of nuclear atomic phenomena.
