RESUMEN

Lipomatous pseudohypertrophy of the pancreas (LPH) is a rare disease in which the pancreatic parenchyma is replaced with mature adipose tissue. It is an idiopathic condition whose diagnosis is made based on histopathological analyses. Herein, we report the case of a 50-year-old male patient with a lipomatous mass in the head of the pancreas on computed tomography for close examination of a renal tumor. We suspected liposarcoma, and laparotomy was performed. However, histological analyses revealed LPH. Several imaging findings of LPH can enable a noninvasive diagnosis and help its clinical approach.

CT has become a commonly used diagnostic procedure in clinical practice, particularly in emergency healthcare delivery. Accordingly, the increase in CT usage has increased the likelihood of incidental detections (ID) of renal cell carcinomas (RCCs). This article discusses key points and limitations associated with the diagnosis and characterization of T1a RCC (≤4 cm in diameter) and shows how to improvise on the differentiation of T1a RCC with unenhanced CT (UE-CT). We retrospectively reviewed UE-CT findings of cases associated with the histopathologic diagnosis of T1a RCC and examined the discrimination capacity and radiological characteristics with regard to small RCCs (SRCCs). Detection and characterization of T1a RCC based on UE-CT are not easy in many cases due to limitations in CT findings, but there are notable radiological features to facilitate detection and differentiation. The growth pattern is important for the detection of SRCCs. Internal characteristic features (average attenuation, heterogeneity) are useful for the characterization of the RCC. In addition, CT image visualization techniques may help improve the detectability of RCCs on UE-CT. Radiological features are important in detecting SRCCs and facilitating further examination. In this study, we discuss some cases of T1a RCCs and evaluate the radiological characteristics of the tumors seen on UE-CT.

PURPOSE: T2 hypointense signal at the posterior edge of the adenohypophysis (T2HSPA) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is incidentally encountered. We aimed to investigate the prevalence and morphology of T2HSPA and their relationship to age. METHODS: A total of 212 cases between 3 and 88 years old were examined. Sagittal T2-weighted image (T2WI) was evaluated for the presence of T2HSPA, which classified by its morphology into two types (belt-like or nodal). The Wilcoxon rank sum test and chi-square test were used to evaluate the differences between the groups. The T2HSPA was extracted by ImageJ software and measured as a cross-sectional area (CSA) quantitatively by threshold setting. We examined the relationship between CSA of T2HSPA and age, and Spearman's correlation coefficients were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: Of the 212 cases, 80 (37.7%) were identified with T2HSPA. The groups with T2HSPA were significantly younger than the groups without it (p = .01). Groups with belt-like T2HSPA were significantly younger than the groups with nodal T2HSPA (p = .01). There was a weak negative correlation between CSA of T2HSPA and age (p = .02). CONCLUSION: T2HSPAs were incidentally detected in 37.7% of all cases, tended to be more common in younger cases, and their morphology was related to age. They seem to have little clinical significance as they tend to decrease in size with age.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to characterize the computed tomography (CT) findings of pseudolithiasis and investigate the outcomes and natural history in adult patients receiving CTRX therapy. METHODS: A total of 17 patients were diagnosed with CTRX-associated biliary pseudolithiasis on CT between April 2013 and March 2017. The medical records, characteristics, complications, treatment options, and outcomes of these patients were examined. Serial CT images and the form, density, and location of pseudolithiasis were reviewed by two radiologists. RESULTS: Of the 17 patients with CTRX-associated pseudolithiasis, seven were men and ten were women. The median patient age was 78 years (range 31-88 years). The median interval from CTRX administration to the diagnosis of pseudolithiasis was 10 days (range 4-32 days). The CT findings of pseudolithiasis included a sludge pattern (11 patients [64.7%]), stone pattern (two patients [11.8%]), and stone plus sludge pattern (four patients [23.5%]). Seven patients (41.2%) showed gall bladder enlargement along with a common bile duct (CBD) stone. Two patients with CBD stones underwent endoscopic CBD stone removal. The median time to pseudolithiasis resolution after CTRX cessation was 69 days. CONCLUSION: The high-density sludge pattern is the most common typical CT finding of CTRX-associated pseudolithiasis in adults.

Objective We investigated the possible factors for predicting the future progression to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) from hypovascular nodules detected in the hepatobiliary phase of gadolinium-ethoxybenzyl-diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (Gd-EOB-DTPA-MRI). Methods A total of 91 hypovascular nodules detected by Gd-EOB-DTPA-MRI in 28 patients without any past history of treatment for HCC were retrospectively examined. The nodules were categorized into those with and without HCC progression, then comparisons were made to identify any factors possibly related to a progression to HCC in each case. In addition, we performed a receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis to determine the cut-off value for the initial nodule size for predicting HCC progression within 12 months. Results The observation period of the 28 patients was 1,172.6±95.6 (mean±standard error) days. The number of hypovascular nodules that changed to hypervascular ones was 15 (16.5%), and the cumulative incidence of hypervascular transformation was 7.1% at 12 months and 12.7% at 24 months. Of all 91 hypovascular nodules, 33 in 18 patients were diagnosed as HCC based on hypervascular transformation and/or size enlargement, while the remaining 58 did not progress to HCC. There was no significant difference regarding the background characteristics between the HCC progressed and non-progressed groups according to a multivariate analysis, or between the patients who had nodules that progressed to HCC and those with nodules that did not progress to HCC. Regarding HCC progression at 12 months, the area under the ROC (AUROC) had a level of 0.745 and showed that an initial nodule cut-off size of 9.5 mm (sensitivity, 57.9%; specificity, 87.3%) was predictive. Conclusion In patients without a past HCC treatment history, it is difficult to determine whether hypovascular nodules have a high risk of progression to HCC based on background factors alone.

PURPOSE: We evaluated the effect of resolution recovery (RR) using graph plots on regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in brain perfusion single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) images derived from healthy volunteers and patients diagnosed with probable Alzheimer's disease. METHOD: We acquired brain perfusion SPECT images with scatter correction (SC), computed tomography-based attenuation correction (CTAC), and RR from a three-dimensional brain phantom and from healthy volunteers. We then compared contrast-to-noise ratio, count density ratios, increase maps, and rCBF using statistical parametric mapping 8. RESULTS: Regional brain counts were significantly increased from 20-24% with SC, CTAC, and RR compared with SC and CTAC. Mean CBF in healthy volunteers was 42.5 ± 5.4 mL/100 g/min. Average rCBF determined using SC, CTAC and RR increased 7.5, 2.0, and 3.7% at the thalamus, posterior cingulate, and whole brain, respectively, compared with SC and CTAC. CONCLUSION: Resolution recovery caused variations in normal rCBF because counts increased in cerebral regions.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of gadoxetic acid-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (EOB-MRI) vs. contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CE-CT) in the detection of liver metastasis in colorectal carcinoma patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One-hundred fifty-eight consecutive patients with histopathologically confirmed colorectal carcinoma underwent EOB-MRI and CE-CT; 68 patients had 105 surgically confirmed liver metastases. Diagnostic analyses were performed according to sensitivity and positive predictive value (PPV) for liver metastasis detection in combined arterial- and hepatocyte-phase images vs. CE-CT by three readers blinded to clinical data. Diagnostic accuracy and sensitivity were evaluated using the alternative free-response receiver operating characteristic method. RESULTS: The overall sensitivity of EOB-MRI (91.4%) was significantly higher than that of CE-CT (80.9%, p < 0.001); the higher sensitivity of EOB-MRI was observed especially in smaller-sized lesions (73.3 vs. 56.0% for lesions ≤1 cm; 91.9 vs. 80.8% for lesions >1 cm and ≤2 cm; 99.2 vs. 95.7% for lesions >2 cm). EOB-MRI showed a significantly greater area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (Az value = 0.970) compared with CE-CT (Az value = 0.899, p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: EOB-MRI provided higher detectability for liver metastases, especially for smaller-sized lesions, than CE-CT in patients with colorectal carcinoma.

We evaluated a novel normal database (NDB) generated using single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) data obtained from healthy brains by using a SPECT/CT system, analyzed using a resolution recovery (RR) technique applied to the three-dimensional stereotactic surface projection (3D-SSP) technique. We used a three-dimensional ordered subset expectation maximization method (3D-OSEM) with applied scatter correction (SC), attenuation correction, and RR to reconstruct the data. We verified the accuracy of the novel NDB's values (Z, extent, and error scores), and compared the novel NDB to the 3D-SSP technique by using simulated misery perfusion-related patient data from a conventional NDB. In addition, Z, extent, and error scores at the precuneus, cuneus, and posterior cingulate were compared under different reconstruction conditions by using the patient data. In the simulation, Z scores decreased when using the novel NDB corrected using computed tomography-based attenuation correction (CTAC), SC, and RR. The extent scores of the posterior cingulate increased using the novel NDB, relative to the other NDBs. The error score with the novel NDB without RR decreased by 15% compared to that of the conventional NDB. Z scores generated from patient data decreased in the novel NDB with RR. The extent scores tended to decrease in the novel NDB with RR. The extent scores in the novel NDB with RR improved at the posterior cingulate, compared to the scores with the other NDBs. However, applying RR to the novel NDB conferred no advantage because the cut-off of the current Z score must be reconsidered when using the additive RR technique.

Computed diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (cDWI) is gradually being known to be useful to detect prostate cancer. We found that cDWIs (b=2000 s/mm2) were easily generated from measured DWIs (mDWIs) with image processing using Image J and that the contrast ratio (CR) of cDWIs-2000 appeared to be higher than the CR of mDWIs-1000 and mDWIs-2000. The diagnostic ability of cDWI-2000 for prostate cancer detection was equivalent to that of mDWI-2000. There is a possibility that cDWIs-2000 can replace mDWIs-2000.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the usefulness of statistical parametric mapping (SPM) for investigating postmortem changes on brain computed tomography (CT). METHODS: This retrospective study included 128 patients (23 - 100 years old) without cerebral abnormalities who underwent unenhanced brain CT before and after death. The antemortem CT (AMCT) scans and postmortem CT (PMCT) scans were spatially normalized using our original brain CT template, and postmortem changes of CT values (in Hounsfield units; HU) were analysed by the SPM technique. RESULTS: Compared with AMCT scans, 58.6 % and 98.4 % of PMCT scans showed loss of the cerebral sulci and an unclear grey matter (GM)-white matter (WM) interface, respectively. SPM analysis revealed a significant decrease in cortical GM density within 70 min after death on PMCT scans, suggesting cytotoxic brain oedema. Furthermore, there was a significant increase in the density of the WM, lenticular nucleus and thalamus more than 120 min after death. CONCLUSIONS: The SPM technique demonstrated typical postmortem changes on brain CT scans, and revealed that the unclear GM-WM interface on early PMCT scans is caused by a rapid decrease in cortical GM density combined with a delayed increase in WM density. SPM may be useful for assessment of whole brain postmortem changes. KEY POINTS: • The original brain CT template achieved successful normalization of brain morphology. • Postmortem changes in the brain were independent of sex. • Cortical GM density decreased rapidly after death. • WM and deep GM densities increased following cortical GM density change. • SPM could be useful for assessment of whole brain postmortem changes.

BACKGROUND: Some iterative reconstruction algorithms are useful for reducing the radiation dose in pediatric cardiac CT. A new iterative reconstruction algorithm (forward-projected model-based iterative reconstruction solution) has been developed, but its usefulness for radiation dose reduction in pediatric cardiac CT is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of the new algorithm on CT image quality and on radiation dose in pediatric cardiac CT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We obtained phantom data at six dose levels, as well as pediatric cardiac CT data, and reconstructed CT images using filtered back projection, adaptive iterative dose reduction 3-D (AIDR 3-D) and the new algorithm. We evaluated phantom image quality using physical assessment. Four radiologists performed visual evaluation of cardiac CT image quality. RESULTS: In the phantom study, the new algorithm effectively suppressed noise in the low-dose range and moderately generated modulation transfer function, yielding a higher signal-to-noise ratio compared with filtered back projection or AIDR 3-D. When clinical cardiac CT was performed, images obtained by the new method had less perceived image noise and better tissue contrast at similar resolution compared with AIDR 3-D images. CONCLUSION: The new algorithm reduced image noise at moderate resolution in low-dose CT scans and improved the perceived quality of cardiac CT images to some extent. This new algorithm might be superior to AIDR 3-D for radiation dose reduction in pediatric cardiac CT.

In the dopamine transporter scintigraphy there are two quantitative analysis softwares, DaTView and DaTQUANT. The quantitative value of both software has to be treated independently because there is a difference between them in the point of how to set the region of interest on the striatum and the background, calculation formula of quantitation. And also DaTQUANT has a capability of performing anatomical standardization which DaTView does not have. The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of registration on DaTQUANT using a phantom, and to evaluate the correlation between the quantitative values between DaTView and DaTQUANT using clinical data. As a result, the accuracy of registration was acceptable. Regardless of the degree of accumulation in the striatum, there was a high correlation to each analysis software (r>0.85).

BACKGROUND: To evaluate ocular fluid filtration and endplate positioning in glaucomatous eyes with long-tube glaucoma drainage devices (GDDs) using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and the effects of various factors on postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP). METHODS: This observational case series included 27 consecutive glaucomatous eyes (18 men, 7 women; mean age ± standard error, 63.0±2.0 years) who underwent GDD implantation (n = 8 Ahmed Glaucoma Valves [AGV] and n = 19 Baerveldt Glaucoma Implants [BGI]). Tubes were inserted into the pars plana in 23 eyes and anterior chamber in 4 eyes. Six months postoperatively, high-resolution orbital images were obtained using 3-Tesla MRI with head-array coils, and the filtering bleb volume, bleb height, and distances between the anterior endplate edge and corneal center or limbus or between the endplate and orbital wall were measured. RESULTS: In MR images obtained by three-dimensional fast imaging employing steady-state acquisition (3D-FIESTA) sequences, the shunt endplate was identified as low-intensity signal, and the filtering bleb was identified as high-intensity signals above and below the endplate in all eyes. The 6-month-postoperative IOP level was correlated negatively with bleb volume (r = -0.4510, P = 0.0182) and bleb height (r = -0.3954, P = 0.0412). The postoperative IOP was significantly (P = 0.0026) lower in BGI-implanted eyes (12.2±0.7 mmHg) than AGV-implanted eyes (16.7±1.2 mmHg); bleb volume was significantly (P = 0.0093) larger in BGI-implanted eyes (478.8±84.2 mm3) than AGV-implanted eyes (161.1±52.3 mm3). Other parameters did not differ. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of intraorbital/periocular accumulation of ocular fluid affects postoperative IOP levels in eyes implanted with long-tube GDDs. Larger filtering blebs after BGI than AGI implantations explain lower postoperative IOP levels achieved with BGI than AGV. The findings will contribute to better understanding of IOP reducing mechanism of long-tube GDDs.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the factors to development of focal pulmonary interstitial opacities adjacent to thoracic spine osteophytes among cases with right-sided aortic arch. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective review of our hospital information system on patients with right-sided aortic arch who underwent chest computed tomography (CT) from April 2003 to September 2014. CT were reviewed to evaluate the position and thickness of osteophytes and that of focal pulmonary opacities adjacent to osteophytes, comparing data between the patients with osteophytes with pulmonary opacity (group A) and patients with osteophytes without pulmonary opacity (group B). RESULTS: There were 25 patients totally, 23 cases of left-sided thoracic osteophytes, two cases on both sides. Comparing Group A (n = 10) and Group B (n = 15), the presence of pulmonary opacities was significantly associated with thickness of osteophytes (Mann-Whitney U test, P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: In patients with right-sided aortic arch, thoracic osteophytes were often observed on the left side. The presence of pulmonary opacities adjacent to thoracic osteophytes was associated with thickness of osteophytes. Furthermore, these interstitial opacities should not be considered a preclinical form of fibrosing lung disease.

OBJECTIVE: We assessed which information from a prostate biopsy had the strongest relationship with prostate cancer detection by 3T-MRI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-one consecutive patients with biopsy-proven prostate cancer who underwent 3T-MRI before biopsy were enrolled in this retrospective study. Two radiologists independently reviewed T2-weighted and diffusion-weighted images. When the cancer lesions were revealed by biopsy and MRI depicted them at corresponding sites, we classified these lesions as MRI-detectable cancer. If the cancer lesions were revealed by biopsy, but any cancers had not been detected, we classified these lesions as MRI-undetectable cancer. We compared the Gleason score (GS), cancer ratio (CaR) and cancer length (CaL) from core biopsies between the two groups. THE RESULTS: GS, CaR and CaL differed significantly between the MRI-detectable group (N = 70), and the MRI-undetectable group (N = 73). 3T-MRI could detect cancer cores with a sensitivity of 90.5% in cores with CaR ≥ 60%, and with a sensitivity of 81.8% in those with CaL ≥ 5 mm. Receiver operating characteristic analysis showed that CaR (P = 0.006) and CaL (P = 0.010) significantly associated with the prostate cancer detection using MRI rather than GS. CONCLUSION: CaR and CaL from the core biopsies showed a stronger relationship to detection of the prostate cancer on 3T-MRI than the GS did.

BACKGROUND: Previous literature demonstrated that the T2* value of the uterine junctional zone was lower than that of peripheral myometrium by using BOLD MR imaging. We expect T2* mapping image may add more information to T2-weighted images of the uterine myometrium. PURPOSE: To evaluate whether T2* mapping software would reproduce the result of previous report, and to apply the software to benign uterine diseases. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Five healthy volunteers and 19 patients clinically suspected of having benign pelvic disease were imaged using a 1.5T MR system. All women were of reproductive age, and all provided informed consent. Sagittal T2* images using a multishot EPI sequence were obtained. T2* values were calculated and color T2* maps reconstructed using a T2* fitting tool. RESULTS: The uterine zones could be identified in all 24 examinations on the T2* maps. In addition, a thin "4th zone" was seen between the endometrium and the JZ (junctional zone) in 19 of 24 examinations. The T2* value of JZ was significantly lower than that of peripheral myometrium (PM) (P < 0.001). No significant difference in the T2* value of the JZ or of PM was noted between normal uterus and uterus with leiomyomas and/or adenomyosis. CONCLUSION: A quantitative T2* map can easily be obtained using the PRIDE software T2* fitting tool, and the software reproduces the result from previous report. T2* value of the junctional zone was lower than that of peripheral myometrium regardless of having benign myometrial diseases.

PURPOSE: To investigate the usefulness of T2* mapping of liver on gadolinium ethoxybenzyl diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (Gd-EOB-DTPA)-enhanced MRI for estimating liver function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 33 patients were classified into 3 groups as follows: normal liver function (NLF) (n = 7); mild liver damage (MLD) (n = 16) with Child-Pugh A; severe liver damage (SLD) (n = 10) with Child-Pugh B. T2*-weighted gradient-echo (T2*W-GRE) and T1-weighted gradient-echo (T1W-GRE) images were obtained before and after Gd-EOB-DTPA administration (3, 8, 13, and 18 min; 5, 10,15, and 20min; respectively). T2* mapping of liver was calculated from T2*W-GRE, then T2* values of liver and T2* reduction rates of T2* value between pre- and post-contrast enhancement were measured. The increase rates of liver-to-muscle signal intensity (LMS) ratio on T1W-GRE between pre- and post-contrast enhancement were calculated. RESULTS: T2* values on pre- and post-contrast showed no significant differences among three groups. Significant differences in T2* reduction rates were found among groups, and those of LCB were lower than those of other groups (NLF:MLD:SLD, 3.8:6.0:0.6% at 3 min, 8.2:10.3:1.0% at 8 min, 10.7:11.5:1.2% at 13 min, and 16.1:13.2:3.5% at 18 min, respectively) (P<0.05). Significant differences in increase rates of LMS ratio on T1W-GRE were identified (NLF:MLD:SLD, 1.53:1.46:1.35 at 5 min, 1.68:1.64:1.37 at 10 min, 1.79:1.76:1.44 at 15 min, and 1.89:1.78:1.49 at 20 min, respectively). CONCLUSION: T2* reduction rate and increase rate of LMS ratio on T1W-GRE may allow us estimation of liver function according to Child-Pugh score.

BACKGROUND: Non-invasive MR imaging is expected to be used for accurate diagnosis and quantification of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), because NASH is a progressive fatty liver disease. New MR techniques, such as fat fraction ratio (FFR) and T2* value measurement, have attracted an increasing attention, because those techniques can measure quantitative parameters of fibrosis, fat and iron deposition in the liver. PURPOSE: To investigate the potential of FFR and T2* value in NASH with pre-enhancement, gadolinium-ethoxybenzyl-diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (Gd-EOB-DTPA) or super-paramagnetic iron oxide (SPIO)-enhanced MRI. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-eight rats were divided equally into four groups (one control group and three NASH groups). All rats underwent unenhanced, Gd-EOB-DTPA, and SPIO-enhanced MRI. The T2* value of the liver was measured for each image sequence, and then changes in T2* values before and after each injection were analyzed using Dunnett's test. The reduction rate of T2* value before and 13 min after injection of Gd-EOB-DTPA or SPIO was analyzed using Mann-Whitney's U test. Moreover, FFR of the liver was measured before enhancement, and the relationship between fat fraction and the calculated fat area percentage on a pathological specimen was examined using Spearman's correlation test. RESULTS: On pre-enhancement, FFR and T2* value were 26.0% ± 12.0% and 21.5 ± 4.2 ms for all NASH groups, and 0.9% ± 0.5% and 30.8 ±-5.5 ms for control, respectively. Both FFR and T2* values were significantly different between the NASH and control groups. The reduction rate of T2* value was significantly lower in the NASH groups than in the control group on SPIO-enhanced MRI, though there was no significant difference on Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MRI. FFR was correlated with the calculated fat area percentage for the pathological specimen. CONCLUSION: Pre-enhancement FFR, T2* value measurement and reduction rate of T2* value on SPIO-enhanced MRI may help estimate the progress of liver fat deposition and fibrosis in NASH.

PURPOSE: To investigate optimal delay time of hepatic arterial phase in Gadoxetate-enhanced MR for detecting hypervascular hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-five patients with 85 hypervascular HCCs and 9 patients with 16 hypervascular HCCs underwent Gadoxetate- and Gd-DTPA-enhanced MR at 1.5 Tesla (T) system, respectively. All HCCs were analyzed 10-38 s after injection using a time-resolved dynamic MR sequence with keyhole data sampling. Seven sequential phase images (1 phase = 4 s) were obtained during a single breath hold of 28 s. Time-intensity curves of the abdominal aorta, liver parenchyma, and HCC were obtained, then aortic contrast arrival time, time of peak HCC enhancement, duration time of HCC and aortic enhancement, and time delay from aortic contrast arrival to peak enhancement of HCC were measured. RESULTS: Aortic contrast arrival time was 15.1 ± 2.9 s, time of peak HCC enhancement 29.9 ± 4.6 s, duration time of HCC enhancement 17.4 ± 6.4 s postinjection of Gadoxetate. Duration of aortic enhancement (23.6 ± 3.5 s) of Gadoxetate-enhanced MR was significantly less than that of Gd-DTPA-enhanced MR (26.3 ± 2.8 s) (P < 0.0059). CONCLUSION: Peak enhancement time of HCC on Gadoxetate-enhanced MR imaging occurred at 14.6 ± 4.6 s after aortic contrast arrival.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the ability of T1 mapping of liver on gadolinium ethoxybenzyl diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (Gd-EOB-DTPA)-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging for the estimation of liver function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Local institutional review board approved this study. Ninety-one patients (64 men, 27 women; mean age, 67.4 years) were classified into 4 groups as follows: normal liver function (NLF), n = 16; chronic hepatitis (CH), n = 38; liver cirrhosis with Child-Pugh A (LCA), n = 20; and liver cirrhosis with Child-Pugh B (LCB), n = 17. Look-Locker sequences (single slice multiphase imaging using gradient-echo sequence with inversion recovery pulse) were obtained before and at 3, 8, 13, and 18 minutes after Gd-EOB-DTPA administration. T1 mapping of liver parenchyma was calculated from the Look-Locker sequence. T1 relaxation time of liver and reduction rate of T1 relaxation time between pre- and postcontrast enhancement were measured. The Bonferroni t test was used for comparisons between the 4 groups. RESULTS: Precontrast T1 relaxation times were significantly longer for LCA and LCB than for NLF, and that of LCB was longer than that of chronic hepatitis (P < 0.05). Postcontrast T1 relaxation times were significantly longer for LCB than for other groups at all time points. Those of LCA were longer than those of NLF at all time points. Reduction rates were significantly lower for LCB than for the other groups at ≥8 minutes. CONCLUSIONS: Evaluation of hepatic uptake of Gd-EOB-DTPA using T1 mapping of liver parenchyma can help estimate liver function.
