RESUMEN

Plasmonic semiconductors are promising candidates for developing energy conversion devices due to their tunable band gap, cost-effectiveness, and nontoxicity. Such materials exhibit remarkable capabilities for harvesting infrared photons, which constitute half of the solar energy spectrum. Herein, we have synthesized near-infrared (NIR) active CuxInyS nanocrystals and CuxInyS/CdS heterostructure nanocrystals (HNCs) to investigate plasmon-induced charge transfer dynamics on an ultrafast time scale. Employing femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, we demonstrate that upon exciting the HNCs with sub-band gap NIR photons (λ = 840 nm), the hot holes are generated in the valence band of plasmonic CuxInyS and transferred to the adjacent semiconductor. The decreased signal intensity and accelerated hole phonon relaxation dynamics for HNCs reveal efficient transfer of plasmon-induced hot carriers from CuxInyS to CdS under both 840 and 350 nm laser excitations, providing a pathway for enhanced carrier utilization. These findings shed light on the potential of ternary chalcogenides in plasmonic applications, highlighting efficient hot carrier extraction to adjacent semiconductors.

The imminent generation of significant amounts of Li ion battery waste is of concern due to potential detrimental environmental impacts. However, this also poses an opportunity to recycle valuable battery materials for later use. One underexplored area is using commonly employed cathode materials such as nickel, manganese cobalt (NMC) oxide as an electrocatalyst for water splitting reactions. In this work we explore the possibility of using NMC materials of different metallic ratios (NMC 622 and 811) as oxygen evolution and hydrogen evolution catalysts under alkaline conditions. We show that both materials are excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts but perform poorly for the hydrogen evolution reaction. NMC 622 demonstrates the better OER activity with an overpotential of only 280 mV to pass 100 mA cm-2 and a low tafel slope of 42 mV dec-1. The material can also pass high current densities of 150 mA cm-2 for 24 h while also being tolerant to extensive potential cycling indicating suitability for direct integration with renewable energy inputs. This work demonstrates that NMC cathode materials if recovered from Li ion batteries are suitable OER electrocatalysts.

53BP1 plays a crucial role in regulating DNA damage repair pathway choice and checkpoint signaling in somatic cells; however, its role in meiosis has remained enigmatic. In this study, we demonstrate that the Caenorhabditis elegans ortholog of 53BP1, HSR-9, associates with chromatin in both proliferating and meiotic germ cells. Notably, HSR-9 is enriched on the X chromosome pair in pachytene oogenic germ cells. HSR-9 is also present at kinetochores during both mitotic and meiotic divisions but does not appear to be essential for monitoring microtubule-kinetochore attachments or tension. Using cytological markers of different steps in recombinational repair, we found that HSR-9 influences the processing of a subset of meiotic double strand breaks into COSA-1-marked crossovers. Additionally, HSR-9 plays a role in meiotic X chromosome segregation under conditions where X chromosomes fail to pair, synapse, and recombine. Together, these results highlight that chromatin-associated HSR-9 has both conserved and unique functions in the regulation of meiotic chromosome behavior.

Harvesting solar energy for different applications requires the continuous development of new semiconducting materials to exploit a broad part of the solar spectrum. In this direction, antimony selenide (Sb2Se3) has attracted a tremendous amount of attention over the past few years as a light-harvesting material for photovoltaic device applications owing to its phase stability, high absorption coefficient, earth abundance, and low toxicity. Here, we have fabricated a high-quality heterojunction of a p-type Sb2Se3 film and an n-type CdS film using the thermal evaporation technique. The photocurrent of the heterosystem was significantly higher than that of the pristine materials. This optoelectronic response was investigated using femtosecond transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy. TA study reveals the existence of an instantaneous electron transfer from Sb2Se3 to CdS, accompanied by a substantial charge separation at the heterojunction. Our study deals with the investigation of a well-designed p-n device, paving the way for the fabrication of highly efficient photovoltaic devices.

The p-n heterojunctions fabricated from one-dimensional (1D) p-type tin sulfide nanorods (SnS NRs) decorated with n-type zero-dimensional (0D) cadmium sulfide quantum dots (CdS QDs) have gained significant research attention in energy storage devices. Herein, we have successfully synthesized a 1D/0D SnS@CdS heterostructure (HS) using a hot injection method. Structural and morphological studies clearly suggest that CdS QDs are uniformly anchored on the surface of SnS NRs, resulting in intimate contact between two components. The photoluminescence (PL) study revealed the transfer of photoexcited holes from CdS QDs to SnS NRs, which was further confirmed by transient absorption (TA) studies. TA measurements demonstrate the hole transfer from the valence band of CdS QDs to SnS NRs and delocalization of electrons between the conduction band of SnS NRs and CdS QDs in SnS@CdS HS, resulting in efficient charge separation across the p-n heterojunction. These findings will open up a new paradigm for improving the efficiency of optoelectronic devices.

INTRODUCTION: Low wages, long work hours, and stressful working conditions predominantly affect the oral and general health of industrial workers, which in turn result in their tobacco consumption. This cross-sectional study examined the prevalence of tobacco use and its associated oral lesions among textile mill workers in Bhopal, India. Oral cancer and premalignant lesions are significantly increased by smoking and chewing tobacco. The study's objective was to assess and record the prevalence of oral mucosal lesions linked to tobacco use in different age groups among Bhopal textile industry workers. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 583 textile mill workers. Data were collected using a questionnaire and the WHO Oral Health Assessment Form 2013. IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 29 (Released 2022; IBM Corp., Armonk, New York, United States) was used for the statistical analysis. Variables were compared using the mean, percentage, and standard deviation. The chi-square test and Fisher's exact test were used to compare the distribution of gender, tobacco habits, and oral mucosal lesions in different age groups. RESULTS: Males made up 69.1% of the workforce. A clear male preference was noted (P ≤ 0.001). About 64.7% of the workers did not have any tobacco-related habits, 20.8% used smokeless tobacco, 7.9% used a smoking form of tobacco, and 6.7% used both. Older age groups, 31-45 and >46 years old, had a higher proportion of users of smokeless tobacco (P ≤ 0.001). The most commonly reported oral mucosal lesions were ulcerative conditions in 6.9%, followed by oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF), keratotic lesions, and leukoplakia in 5.0%, 4.1%, and 3.6% of the study population, respectively. Leukoplakia and OSMF were prevalent in the 31-45-year age group, while ulcerative lesions were more prevalent in the 18-30-year age group (P ≤ 0.001). CONCLUSION: Workers at textile mills were more likely to use a smokeless form of tobacco. Older age groups had higher rates of smokeless tobacco use as compared to smoking, which was more prevalent in the younger age group. Oral mucosal lesions in older age groups frequently include OSMF and leukoplakia. The main reasons for engaging in the tobacco use habit were stress and a lack of awareness. Oral hygiene was a neglected entity among workers.

Coordinated temporal control of gene expression is essential for physiological homeostasis, especially during metabolic transitions. However, the interplay between chromatin architectural proteins and metabolism in regulating transcription is less understood. Here, we demonstrate a conserved bidirectional interplay between CTCF (CCCTC-binding factor) expression/function and metabolic inputs during feed-fast cycles. Our results indicate that its loci-specific functional diversity is associated with physiological plasticity in mouse hepatocytes. CTCF differential expression and long non-coding RNA-Jpx mediated changes in chromatin occupancy, unraveled its paradoxical yet tuneable functions, which are governed by metabolic inputs. We illustrate the key role of CTCF in controlling temporal cascade of transcriptional response, with effects on hepatic mitochondrial energetics and lipidome. Underscoring the evolutionary conservation of CTCF-dependent metabolic homeostasis, CTCF knockdown in flies abrogated starvation resistance. In summary, we demonstrate the interplay between CTCF and metabolic inputs that highlights the coupled plasticity of physiological responses and chromatin function.

Electrochemical treatment of organic matter for environmental remediation necessitates the development of cheap and robust electrodes that are chemically and structurally stable. To address this challenging requirement, we demonstrate a new electrochemical approach using a simple copper electrode under cathodic conditions to electrochemically generate reactive nitrosonium ions for the degradation of different classes of synthetic organic dyes. This could be achieved in an aqueous HNO3/KNO3 electrolyte at a relatively low cathodic potential of -0.5 V RHE at room temperature. UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, liquid chromatography - mass spectrometry and total organic carbon measurements revealed the rapid decolorisation and mineralisation of several dye types such as triarylmethane dyes (crystal violet, cresol red), an azo dye (methyl orange) as well as a sulfur containing thiazine dye (toluidine blue). The total organic carbon content of a 50 mg L-1 methyl orange solution was found to decrease by 83% after 1 h of electrolysis. Promisingly, locally sourced river and creek water samples spiked with 50 mg L-1 methyl orange were also successfully treated for up to 6 cycles at a simple Cu electrode, demonstrating potential for the remediation of polluted waterways.

The tumor suppressor BRCA1-BARD1 complex regulates many cellular processes; of critical importance to its tumor suppressor function is its role in genome integrity. Although RING E3 ubiquitin ligase activity is the only known enzymatic activity of the complex, the in vivo requirement for BRCA1-BARD1 E3 ubiquitin ligase activity has been controversial. Here we probe the role of BRCA1-BARD1 E3 ubiquitin ligase activity in vivo using C. elegans. Genetic, cell biological, and biochemical analyses of mutants defective for E3 ligase activity suggest there is both E3 ligase-dependent and independent functions of the complex in the context of DNA damage repair and meiosis. We show that E3 ligase activity is important for nuclear accumulation of the complex and specifically to concentrate at meiotic recombination sites but not at DNA damage sites in proliferating germ cells. While BRCA1 alone is capable of monoubiquitylation, BARD1 is required with BRCA1 to promote polyubiquitylation. We find that the requirement for E3 ligase activity and BARD1 in DNA damage signaling and repair can be partially alleviated by driving the nuclear accumulation and self-association of BRCA1. Our data suggest that in addition to E3 ligase activity, BRCA1 may serve a structural role for DNA damage signaling and repair while BARD1 plays an accessory role to enhance BRCA1 function.

Housing instability and intimate partner violence (IPV) compromise women's sexual and reproductive health (SRH) through reduced contraceptive access and increased risk of unintended pregnancy. This study describes the reproductive health status and needs of IPV survivors receiving housing support and explores factors influencing their experience of reproductive coercion (RC), specifically. Cross-sectional baseline data from a quasi-experimental study of 70 IPV survivors enrolled in housing programs in the Baltimore, MD, metropolitan area from June 2019 through December 2020 were analyzed. Of the 70 women enrolled in the study, 70.3 percent (n = 45) desired to avoid pregnancy, but 57.4 percent were either using no contraceptive method (31.2%) or methods with low effectiveness (26.2%). Approximately, 1 in 6 women (16.4%, n = 11) experienced RC in the past 3 months, which was associated with frequency and severity of IPV (p = 0.001 to 0.005) and PTSD (p = 0.001), as well as not sharing children with the abusive partner (p = 0.002). This study highlights reproductive health risks in an important and under-studied population of women seeking housing due to IPV. Leaving an abusive relationship is a uniquely vulnerable time, and also a time of opportunity, as women are accessing services that can be tailored to their SRH needs. Significant results highlight vulnerability to and consequences of RC in this population. This study has implications for IPV support programs and housing programs that serve women.

BACKGROUND: Selective photothermolysis on sebaceous glands is an effective method for treating acne vulgaris (AV); however, safety, efficacy, and discomfort hinder its utilization in clinical settings. AIMS: The primary objective is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a novel 1726 nm laser with contact cooling to treat AV. METHODS: Seventeen patients aged 18 to 36 were enrolled and treated in this IRB-approved, single-center, open-label study. Patients received up to three facial laser sessions up to seven weeks apart. Follow-up visits happened ten days post-session and at the 4 and 12 weeks following the final session. The investigator assessed the severity of device-related adverse events (AEs). Investigator Global Assessment (IGA) and inflammatory lesion counts (ILC) were used as metrics to evaluate acne resolution and skin condition enhancement. Patients' perspectives on satisfaction and comfort using this technology were assessed using Subject Experience Questionnaires (SEQ). RESULTS: Safety assessment showed mild and transient AEs. All subjects tolerated anesthetics-free treatments well, with a mean treatment discomfort score of 4.9 ± 1.5. Compared to baseline, a statistically significant reduction in ILC (p = 0.003) of 52% to 56% is achieved four to twelve weeks following treatment. Long-term follow-ups showed progressive improvement 24 months post-treatment with a 97% reduction in ILC. SEQs revealed high subject satisfaction (71%) with psychosocial improvement three months post-treatment. CONCLUSION: The novel 1726 nm laser appears safe and effective for treating mild-to-severe acne. Acne resolution is apparent within the first month and progresses beyond the study duration.

Background and Aims: Health care workers (HCWs) are caught in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic storm and are exposed to a large degree of physical and emotional stress. This study was planned to describe the stressors, stress levels, emotional responses, and coping strategies adopted by HCWs amidst this pandemic. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional, web-based survey was conducted after ethics approval, using a structured performa incorporating standardized stress (PSS-10 C), emotional responses (PANAS-10), and coping strategy (Brief COPE) scales. The snowball sampling technique was used to conduct the study and collect data. Data were analyzed using SPSS 26 version (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) statistical software. A P value of <0.05 was considered significant. Results: Out of 402 participants (65% doctors and 35% nurses), 87% perceived moderate stress levels, and nearly half of the participants were interns, residents, and medical officers. Infection to self or family members (77.1%), survival of sick patients (75.6%), aggression by patients and relatives (70.3%), and long duty hours (67%) were some of the major stressors as reported by HCWs. The most common positive emotion felt was being alert (19.17 ± 5.57) and negative emotion perceived was being upset (15.6 ± 6.06). Many participants adopted emotion and problem-focused coping strategies such as planning and strategization (68%) and positive reframing (67.6%), whereas dysfunctional coping strategies such as venting and denial were adopted less commonly. Conclusion: Moderate stress levels perceived by HCWs are a cause for concern. Emotional responses of HCWs to stress vary; however, appropriate coping strategies including emotional and problem-focused coping strategies are the need of the hour to tackle pandemic-related stress.

ABSTRACTS: Metastasis to salivary glands from the secondary source outside the head and neck region is extremely rare and Carcinoma Lung is one of the rarest sources of distant spread to salivary glands. Owing to missed diagnosis and misdiagnosis, accurate identification of clinical and pathological aspects of these metastatic lesions remains a challenging task. Many studies regarding metastasis to the oral cavity have been already documented in the literature, but very little research work has been done to analyse the cases of lung cancer metastasis as the sole primary source, particularly to salivary glands. Thus this review was conducted to analyse the published cases of lung cancer metastasizing to salivary glands as the only primary source till date. An electronic search of the published literature was performed without publication year limitation in PubMed/ Medline, Scopus, Google Scholar, Web of Science, Science direct, Embase, and Research gate databases, using Mesh keywords like (Lung cancer', OR 'Lung carcinoma), AND (Metastasis OR Metastases), And (Salivary glands OR Parotid gland OR Submandibular gland OR Sublingual gland). We also searched all related journals manually. The reference list of all articles was also checked. Our research revealed 34 relevant papers between 1965-2022 with a total of 44 patients. The most prevalent diagnosed metastatic Lung cancer was Small cell lung cancer. Parotid was the most common gland involved in metastasis. 48% of patients died of metastasis with a mean survival time of 2.2 years. Salivary gland metastasis from Lung cancer is very rare and has a poor prognosis. More cases need to be published in order to raise awareness of these lesions and gain a better understanding of their characteristics.

A temperature dependent transient absorption study has been demonstrated for Mn2+ doped CsPbBr3 nanoplatelets. At 5 K, charge transfer is suppressed due to the trapping of charge carriers in defect states. By contrast, at 300 K, an efficient charge/energy transfer process is observed as the thermally active carriers become de-trapped from the defect states upon strong exciton-phonon coupling.

Utilization of hot carriers is very crucial in improving the efficiency of solar energy devices. In this work, we have fabricated an Sb2Se3/CdSe p-n heterojunction via a cation exchange method and investigated the possibility of hot electron transfer and relaxation pathways through ultrafast spectroscopy. The enhanced intensity of the CdSe hot excitonic (1P) bleach in the heterostructure system confirmed the hot electron transfer from Sb2Se3 to CdSe. Both the 1S and 1P signals are dynamically very slow in the heterosystem, validating this charge migration phenomenon. Interestingly, recovery of the 1P signal is much slower than that of 1S. This is very unusual as 1S is the lowest-energy state. This observation indicates the strength of hot electron transfer in this unique heterojunction, which helps in increasing the carrier lifetime in the hot state. Extended separation of charge carriers and enhanced hot carrier lifetime would be extremely helpful in extracting carriers and boost the performance of optoelectronic devices.

BACKGROUND: Acne lesion counting (ALC) is widely used to evaluate efficacy of new acne treatments. Although such evaluations are precise and highly discriminative, if assessed live, it can be a time-consuming and intrusive measurement. Photographic assessment is a viable mode for ALCs and for training and/or qualifying evaluators. AIMS: The purpose of this study was to validate photographic methods for performing ALCs and to provide an objective measurement tool to train and/or qualify lesion count evaluators for deployment in both small- and large-scale studies. PATIENTS/METHODS: Assess accuracy and reliability of acne lesion counting via photographic methods in 8 subjects aged 16 to 40 years, with Fitzpatrick Skin Types I to VI. Frontal and 45°angle images taken at the single in-clinic visit. Each subject underwent 3 counts per 4 evaluators: 1 set of live counts and 2 sets of photo counts. Intra-evaluator and inter-evaluator reliability measures for photo counts were evaluated using calculations of intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs). RESULTS: Eight subjects (2 males and 6 females) age between 16 and 40 (min 16 years, max 25 years) diagnosed with facial acne vulgaris participated in the study. Fitzpatrick Skin Types ranged from III to V (three Type-III, four Type-IV, and one Type-V). ICC values for intra-evaluator reliability were found to be >0.95 for each evaluator, and ICC for inter-evaluator reliability was found to be 0.98. CONCLUSIONS: Photographic lesion count methodology is a reliable and accurate tool for objective measurement of ALCs and additionally, for training and/or qualifying evaluators.

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is an increasingly common and rapidly fatal demyelinating infection of central nervous system caused by the highly prevalent John Cunningham (JC) virus in immunocompromised individuals belonging to all age groups and genders. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is the most common predisposing factor among other immunodeficient conditions leading to reactivation and multiple neurological symptoms. It has varied findings on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and diagnosis is confirmed by positive JC virus in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). We report 12 confirmed cases of PML from a single academic center. We comprehensively described clinical presentations, risk factors, CSF and neuroimaging findings, treatment and outcome for these cases of PML, a rare disease. The cases were almost equivalently distributed among young and old age groups and both genders. Positive JC virus on CSF was present in the majority of cases along with mild to severe reduction in lymphocyte counts. Significant MRI changes were present in all cases ranging from T2 hypertense signals to white matter lesions in various regions. Treatment with the reversion of immune-modulators, optimization of antiviral therapy (ART), plasmapheresis (PLEX), IVIG, Mirtazapine, oral steroids, and others was started as soon as the diagnosis was made in the majority of the cases. However, PML is a rapidly fatal illness and hence, survival was only seen in 4 cases in our study. The objective of this article is to highlight the importance of early diagnosis of PML with CSF findings and neuroimaging, early reversion of immunosuppressive medications, and careful monitoring and treatment of HIV cases with goals to reduce mortality, long-term morbidity, and deficits.

Biological sex affects numerous aspects of biology, yet how sex influences different biological processes have not been extensively studied at the molecular level. Caenorhabditis elegans, with both hermaphrodites (functionally females as adults) and males, is an excellent system to uncover how sex influences physiology. Here, we describe a method to isolate large quantities of C. elegans males by conditionally degrading DPY-27, a component of the dosage compensation complex essential for hermaphrodite, but not male, development. We show that germ cells from males isolated following DPY-27 degradation undergo meiosis and spermiogenesis like wild type and these males are competent to mate and sire viable offspring. We further demonstrate the efficacy of this system by analyzing gene expression and performing affinity pull-downs from male worm extracts.
