RESUMEN
Smiling is an embodied and complex social act. Smiling is presented as facilitating individual health and wellbeing, but the value placed on smiling raises questions about structural conditions acting on the body. While smiling has been considered sociologically, psychologically and historically, we argue that further exploration of the embodied smile offers fruitful avenues for future research. This article attempts to advance understanding of the smile and its importance by: (I) Bringing together literature on smiling as a social act and smiling as embodied. (II) Systematically identifying key themes, which recognise sociological insights and the relevance of oral health. (III) Pointing to useful directions for future sociological research into smiling. In this article, we review literature on body techniques; impression management and social interaction; gender, race and smiling; and emotional, aesthetic and affective labour. We move on to embodiment, considering the mouth as a body project and in relation to the ageing body, before reflecting on the significance of oral health and dentistry. We highlight future directions for sociological research on smiling, building on eight interrelated and cross-cutting themes: norms and expectations, aesthetic ideals, self and identity, health and wellbeing, body work, commodification and labour, inclusion and exclusion and resistance.

BACKGROUND: Powered toothbrushes are an effective alternative to manual toothbrushes. Previous research found parents view powered toothbrushes as fun and motivating, although are less confident using them when children demonstrate resistant behaviour. Resistant child behaviour is a recognised barrier to achieving parental supervised brushing. Parents discuss strategies to address toothbrushing resistance on online parenting forums. OBJECTIVE: To explore how those posting on an online parenting forum discuss powered toothbrushes as a potential solution to toothbrushing resistance in young children. DESIGN: Qualitative content analysis of threads retrieved from the UK parenting forum Mumsnet. RESULTS: The Mumsnet sub-forums 'Behaviour/Development', 'Parenting' and 'Children's Health' were searched in April 2022. 204 relevant threads on toothbrushing resistance were identified and analysed. A further search of these threads identified posts on powered toothbrushes, yielding a sub-sample of 245 posts from 111 threads (of which 97 focused on resistant behaviour from a child/children aged under three). A coding frame was developed and included six categories: use of powered toothbrushes, descriptions of toothbrushes, positive aspects, reasons for not using, approaches to using, and discussions on Mumsnet. Posters suggested powered toothbrushes as a solution to toothbrushing resistance. Posters use Mumsnet to discuss the appropriateness of powered toothbrushes for young children. CONCLUSIONS: Powered toothbrushes offer a potential solution to toothbrushing resistance. Discussions on parenting forums can normalise the use of powered toothbrushes with under-threes. Further research on how parents and dental professionals use and recommend using powered toothbrushes with under-threes would be useful.

To explore patients' experiences of orthognathic treatment for facial asymmetry and their adaptation to facial changes after surgery, we did a qualitative, cross-sectional study of patients after treatment for non-cleft asymmetry at two UK sites. A total of 15 patients aged 19-40 years were approached after being identified using patient databases and clinical notes. Individual and photo-elicitation interviews were conducted covering experiences prior to treatment, during treatment, and after surgery. Interviews were transcribed and thematic narrative analysis undertaken. Participants were largely positive about their orthognathic treatment. The following themes were identified: preoperative (becoming aware, negative impacts of asymmetry, committing to treatment, establishing expectations), pre-surgery orthodontics and inpatient experiences (challenges and coping strategies, preparedness, support, and shared experiences); and postoperative (surgery as 'worth it', positive impacts of treatment, adapting to facial change). Undergoing orthognathic surgery was portrayed as a journey involving recognisable narratives (treatment unfinished, threat of liminality, treatment as resolution, and treatment as transformation). Patients' experiences of facial asymmetry are associated with feeling 'abnormal', and negative impacts, and orthognathic treatment for facial asymmetry is worthwhile. Having the feeling that something is 'wrong' legitimised by clinicians allows patients access to a recognisable treatment narrative (resolution). Orthognathic treatment is also described as transformation from 'normal abnormality' to being 'normal'. Nevertheless, the associated challenges can be frustrating, particularly if resolution is hard to envisage. Further psychological input could help patients cope with these challenges and the complex process of adapting to facial change.

A report of transparent and conducting silver nanowires (AgNWs) that produce remarkable electrical performance, surface planarity and environmental stability is given. This research presents an innovative process that relies on three sequential steps, which are roll-to-roll (R2R) compatible: thermal embossing, infrared sintering and plasma treatment. This process leads to the demonstration of a conductive film with a sheet resistance of 2.5 Ω sq-1 and high transmittance, thus demonstrating the highest reported figure-of-merit in AgNWs to date (FoM = 933). A further benefit of the process is that the surface roughness is substantially reduced compared to traditional AgNW processing techniques. The consideration of the long-term stability is given by developing an accelerated life test process that simultaneously stresses the applied bias and temperature. Regression line fitting shows that a â¼150-times improvement in stability is achieved under 'normal operational conditions' when compared to traditionally deposited AgNW films. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is used to understand the root cause of the improvement in long-term stability, which is related to reduced chemical changes in the AgNWs.

The structures of inkjet coatings commonly contain a high concentration of fine diameter pores together with a large pore volume capacity. To clarify the interactive role of the porous structure and the coincidentally occurring swelling of binder during inkjet ink vehicle imbibition, coating structures were studied in respect to their absorption behaviour for polar and non-polar liquid. The absorption measurement was performed using compressed pigment tablets, based on a range of pigment types and surface charge polarity, containing either polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) or styrene acrylic latex (SA) as the binder, by recording the liquid uptake with a microbalance. The results indicate that, at the beginning of liquid uptake, at times less than 2 s, the small pores play the dominant role with respect to the inkjet ink vehicle imbibition. Simultaneously, water molecules diffuse into and within the hydrophilic PVOH binder causing binder swelling, which diminishes the number of active small pores and reduces the diameter of remaining pores, thus slowing the capillary flow as a function of time. The SA latex does not absorb the vehicle, and therefore the dominating phenomenon is then capillary absorption. However, the diffusion coefficient of the water vapour across separately prepared PVOH and SA latex films seems to be quite similar. In the PVOH, the polar liquid diffuses into the polymer network, whereas in the SA latex the hydrophobic nature prevents the diffusion into the polymer matrix and there exists surface diffusion. At longer timescale, permeation flow into the porous coating dominates as the resistive term controlling the capillary driven liquid imbibition rate.
RESUMEN
A new fabrication process for the patterning of organic semiconductors at the nanoscale has been developed using low temperature thermal nanoimprint lithography and the details of this process are discussed. Novel planar nanotransistors have been fabricated and characterized from poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and we demonstrate the feasibility of using such devices as highly sensitive chemical sensors.
