RESUMEN

Background: Mobile health interventions (mHealth) may improve health-related lifestyle behaviors and disease management. Successful management of diabetes is patient-centered responsibility. The aim of this research was to determine the efficacy of the theory driven program of promoting treatment adherence in type 2 diabetes (T2DM) patients based on mHealth. Methods: This quasi-experimental research was conducted on 70 T2DM patients in Tehran, Iran. Participants were randomly divided into intervention (n = 35) or control (n = 35) groups. The data collection tool was a questionnaire based on some of constructs Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) which elicit from formative evaluation. The SCT theory-based intervention program was developed, implemented, and evaluated based on Intervention Mapping (IM) as a framework in 8 sessions using online WhatsApp application. The data was collected through by online interviews before and one month after the implementation of the program and analyzed in SPSS version 16. Results: After the implementation of the program, a significant increase in self-efficacy (P = 0.009), outcome expectations (P < 0.001), and also diabetes treatment adherence behaviors (P = 0.024) were indicated in the intervention group. The estimated effect sizes for self-efficacy, outcome expectations, social support, and diabetes treatment adherence behaviors were 0.78, 0.06, 0.07, and 0.62, respectively. Conclusion: Estimated effect size of the implemented intervention was evaluated as "large" effect for diabetes treatment adherence behaviors. Findings indicated the usefulness and efficacy of the mHealth educational program based on SCT constructs and the IM approach in treatment adherence behaviors promotion among T2DM patients in Iran. RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most common malignancy in men worldwide and the incidence rate of PCa has been increasing in recent years. The aim of the current study was to determine beliefs elderly men towards prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test uptake. METHODS: This cross-sectional study conducted among 352 elderly men (60-74 years old age) in the west of Iran. The Health Belief Model (HBM) was applied as a study framework to evaluation of beliefs towards PSA test uptake. Data were analyzed by SPSS version 16 using appropriate statistical tests including t-test, chi-square, bivariate correlations, and logistic regression at 95% significant level. RESULT: The mean age of participants was 65.55 years [SD: 3.90]. Almost 16.9% of the elderly men had uptake PSA during last year. There was significant association between PSA test uptake with older age (P = 0.013), better economic status (P = 0.023), higher education level (P = 0.004), positive family history of prostate cancer (P = 0.018), and number of family members more than four (P = 0.032). The best determinants predictors for PSA test uptake were cues to action [OR: 1.967 and 95% CI: 1.546, 2.504], perceived severity [OR: 1.140 and 95% CI: 1.008, 1.290], and perceived benefits towards PSA test uptake [OR: 1.133 and 95% CI: 1.024, 1.253]. CONCLUSIONS: It seems that development of health promotion programs to increase cues to action and positive beliefs toward PSA test uptake and also perceived treat about side effect of PCa could be beneficial to increase PSA test uptake.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Air pollution is an environmental health issue that has received much attention due to its harmful effects on public health. The aim of this study was to determine the psychometric properties of the self-care behaviors related to air pollution protection. To this mean, questionnaire responses provided by Iranian college students were analyzed and a Health Belief Model (HBM) determined. METHODS: The self-care behavior related to air pollution protection was determined from responses from 301 university students using test item characteristics, face validity, reliability (internal consistency) and construct validity. Moreover, we carried out an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to determine the factorial structure and explained variance. RESULTS: Based on Eigenvalues of ≥1.00 and factor loadings of ≥0.40, seven factors were extracted. The calculated Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin value was 0.804. Overall, the seven factors explain 66.39% of the variance in the hypothesized model. Cronbach's alpha for the measured factors: the perceived susceptibility, severity, barriers, benefits, self-efficacy, cues to action and behavior were 0.85, 0.79, 0.86, 0.66, 0.74, 0.83, and 0.75, respectively. CONCLUSION: The analysis of the questionnaire's reliability and validity properties resulted in good values. The questionnaire is a promising instrument to assess self-care behavior related to air pollution protection from the perspective of college students.

RESUMEN

The present study was conducted to investigate the responses of Lolium perenne L. species to lead ions. To do this, the effects of lead ions at five levels: control (blank), 250, 500, 750, and 1000 mg/kg or mg/L (depending on germination in the soil or petri dish) on the germination, initial growth, and physiological characteristics of Lolium perenne were investigated. The results showed that the difference between various lead concentrations was statistically significant at 1% confidence level in all of the germination, vegetative, and physiological characteristics. In addition, the results of translocation and stress factors indicated that there was a significant difference between the control treatment and the concentrations of 250, 500, 750, and 1000 mg/L of lead ions. Results show that the mean value of stress, which was 0.3196 in the control value, reached 0.4154 at the concentrations 1000 mg/L. Different levels of lead ions had significant effect on the estimated characteristics including germination percentage, seed vigor, germination index, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, carotenoids, root, and shoot. The average germination percentage in the control was 46.66%, which decreased by 5% at the highest lead concentration. In addition, the average of seed vigor, which was 34.06 in the control conditions, decreased to 0.72 at the highest lead concentration. Also, the chlorophyll a dropped from 0.5261 mg/g in the control conditions to 0.3149 mg/g. On the other hand, increase in lead ion concentration affected the physiological characteristics of Lolium perenne species. Results suggest that Lolium perenne is capable of accumulating lead and is well tolerant to lead in soil. Therefore, it is concluded that it can be used for sowing on lands which are polluted to this heavy metal (up to the concentration of 1000 mg/kg).
