RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic has taken many forms and continues to evolve, now around the Omicron wave, raising concerns over the globe. With COVID-19 being declared no longer a "public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC)," the COVID pandemic is still far from over, as new Omicron subvariants of interest and concern have risen since January of 2023. Mainly with the XBB.1.5 and XBB.1.16 subvariants, the pandemic is still very much "alive" and "breathing." METHODS: This review consists of five highly concerning questions about the current state of the COVID Omicron peak. We searched four main online databases to answer the first four questions. For the last one, we performed a systematic review of the literature, with keywords "Omicron," "Guidelines," and "Recommendations." RESULTS: A total of 31 articles were included. The main symptoms of the current Omicron wave include a characteristically high fever, coughing, conjunctivitis (with itching eyes), sore throat, runny nose, congestion, fatigue, body ache, and headache. The median incubation period of the symptoms is shorter than the previous peaks. Vaccination against COVID can still be considered effective for the new subvariants. CONCLUSION: Guidelines recommend continuation of personal protective measures, third and fourth dose boosters, along with administration of bivalent messenger RNA vaccine boosters. The consensus antiviral treatment is combination therapy using Nirmatrelvir and Ritonavir, and the consensus for pre-exposure prophylaxis is Tixagevimab and Cilgavimab combination. We hope the present paper raises awareness for the continuing presence of COVID and ways to lower the risks, especially for at-risk groups.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to systematically review randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) studying various types of regenerative medicine methods (such as platelet-rich plasma, stromal vascular fraction, cell therapy, conditioned media, etc.) in treating specific dermatologic diseases. Rejuvenation, scarring, wound healing, and other secondary conditions of skin damage were not investigated in this study. METHOD: Major databases, including PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, were meticulously searched for RCTs up to January 2024, focusing on regenerative medicine interventions for specific dermatologic disorders (such as androgenetic alopecia, vitiligo, alopecia areata, etc.). Key data extracted encompassed participant characteristics and sample sizes, types of regenerative therapy, treatment efficacy, and adverse events. RESULTS: In this systematic review, 64 studies involving a total of 2888 patients were examined. Women constituted 44.8% of the study population, while men made up 55.2% of the participants, with an average age of 27.64 years. The most frequently studied skin diseases were androgenetic alopecia (AGA) (45.3%) and vitiligo (31.2%). The most common regenerative methods investigated for these diseases were PRP and the transplantation of autologous epidermal melanocyte/keratinocyte cells, respectively. Studies reported up to 68.4% improvement in AGA and up to 71% improvement in vitiligo. Other diseases included in the review were alopecia areata, melasma, lichen sclerosus et atrophicus (LSA), inflammatory acne vulgaris, chronic telogen effluvium, erosive oral lichen planus, and dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa. Regenerative medicine was found to be an effective treatment option in all of these studies, along with other methods. The regenerative medicine techniques investigated in this study comprised the transplantation of autologous epidermal melanocyte/keratinocyte cells, isolated melanocyte transplantation, cell transplantation from hair follicle origins, melanocyte-keratinocyte suspension in PRP, conditioned media injection, a combination of PRP and basic fibroblast growth factor, intravenous injection of mesenchymal stem cells, concentrated growth factor, stromal vascular fraction (SVF), a combination of PRP and SVF, and preserving hair grafts in PRP. CONCLUSION: Regenerative medicine holds promise as a treatment for specific dermatologic disorders. To validate our findings, it is recommended to conduct numerous clinical trials focusing on various skin conditions. In our study, we did not explore secondary skin lesions like scars or ulcers. Therefore, assessing the effectiveness of this treatment method for addressing these conditions would necessitate a separate study.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness and safety of oral and injectable systemic treatments, such as methotrexate, azathioprine, cyclosporine, tofacitinib, baricitinib, corticosteroids, statins, zinc, apremilast, etc., for treating vitiligo lesions. METHOD: Databases including PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were meticulously searched for studies spanning from 2010 to August 2023, focusing on systemic oral and injectable therapies for vitiligo, using comprehensive keywords and search syntaxes tailored to each database. Key data extracted included study design, treatment efficacy, patient outcomes, patient satisfaction, and safety profiles. RESULTS: In a total of 42 included studies, oral mini-pulse corticosteroid therapy (OMP) was the subject of six studies (14.2%). Minocycline was the focus of five studies (11.9%), while methotrexate, apremilast, and tofacitinib each were examined in four studies (9.5%). Antioxidants and Afamelanotide were the subjects of three studies each (7.1%). Cyclosporine, simvastatin, oral zinc, oral corticosteroids (excluding OMP) and injections, and baricitinib were each explored in two studies (4.8%). Azathioprine, mycophenolate mofetil, and Alefacept were the subjects of one study each (2.4%). CONCLUSION: Systemic treatments for vitiligo have been successful in controlling lesions without notable side effects. OMP, Methotrexate, Azathioprine, Cyclosporine, Mycophenolate mofetil, Simvastatin, Apremilast, Minocycline, Afamelanotide, Tofacitinib, Baricitinib, Antioxidants, and oral/injectable corticosteroids are effective treatment methods. However, oral zinc and alefacept did not show effectiveness.

In this work, various amounts of the UiO-66-NH2 and UiO-66-NH2/TiO2 MOFs have been loaded into polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers supported on polyethersulfone (PES). The visible light irradiation was used to investigate the influence of pH (2-10), initial concentration (10-500 mg L-1), and time (5-240 min) on the removal efficiency of phenol and Cr(vi) in the presence of MOFs. The reaction time: 120 min, catalyst dosage: 0.5 g L-1, pH: 2 for Cr(vi) ions and pH: 3 for phenol molecules were optimum to degrade phenol and to reduce Cr(vi) ions. The characterization of the produced samples was performed using X-ray diffraction, ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis. The capability of synthesized photocatalytic membranes was investigated for the removal of phenol and Cr(vi) ions from water. The water flux, Cr(vi) and phenol solutions fluxes and their rejection percentages were evaluated under pressure of 2 bar in the presence of visible light irradiation and in the dark. The best performance of the synthesized nanofibers was obtained for UiO-66-NH2/TiO2 MOF 5 wt% loaded-PES/PAN nanofibrous membranes at temperature of 25 °C and pH of 3. Results demonstrated the high capability of MOFs-loaded nanofibrous membranes for the removal of various contaminants such as Cr(vi) ions and phenol molecules from water.

In recent decades, global forecasts show that the demands for freshwater, energy, and food have been affected by population growth, economic development, international trade, and increasing urbanization and food diversity. Moreover, cultural changes and other phenomena have adversely affected the water, energy, and food (WEF) resources demand. Consequently, climate change adverse impact, which is an undesirable phenomenon, will be increased at a staggering rate. Numerous studies have emphasized that the lack of integrated and systematic management strategies threaten these indispensable resources' ability to meet growing demand. In many countries, the security of WEF resources, which is related to each other, has become three non-traditional security challenges that overshadow these communities' development. Before realizing the importance of interactions between these three vital resources, the management strategies were typically used for one source, which was completely independent of the other two. Since these strategies did not consider the interactions between the three systems, the applied strategies' results were sometimes contradictory. Also, due to the lack of attention to these three sectors' vital connections, the competition level among these systems has been increased. Therefore, in recent years, the study of the complex interactions and connections between these resources has led to the emergence of a new term called WEF nexus in the scientific communities. Most studies about the WEF nexus have only described the current situation or, ideally, analyzed several predetermined scenarios. However, the adopted approach should be able to analyze different scenarios and be efficient and robust enough to develop a variety of strategies and utilize them for macro-policies. In this study, after reviewing the complex interactions between the WEF systems, it was tried to introduce a novel paradigm for the WEF nexus, which concentrates on expanding the possible space of WEF nexus.

Scars are among the most prevalent referral cases of dermatology clinics, including atrophic, hypertrophic, or keloidal scars. Approach to scar usually needs a holistic trend, attention to individualized characteristics, and combination therapy. Scars usually need multiple sessions of therapy and the use of combination therapeutic approaches to reach the most acceptable outcomes by safe modalities. Studies on scars are always one of the most important fields of research in medicine, especially in dermatology. For writing this review study, we searched all the databases to find the most relevant and the newest studies related to our topic, because based on expert opinion, this topic may be really practical and interesting for dermatologists and all physicians of various specialties or subspecialties who manage and treat various kinds of scars, including hypertrophic scars and keloids. Based on our results, we concluded that different procedures, which basically use needling, lasers, especially pulsed dye laser (PDL) and carbon dioxide (CO2) laser, and MesoBotox (micro-injection of botulinum toxin), are really promising therapeutic options for hypertrophic and keloidal scars and a combination of these therapies results in more efficacy and lesser side effects in the field of scar management.

The removal of heavy metal ions and organic materials from wastewater due to their toxicity is necessary. In the present study, the titanium dioxide/zinc oxide (TiO2 /ZnO) nanocomposite has been coated on the sewage sludge carbon (SSC) surface and its application was investigated for the adsorption of Ni(II), Cu(II), and chemical oxygen demands (COD) reduction from aqueous solutions and industrial wastewaters in Eshtehard, Iran. The effect of adsorption parameters in a single system such as TiO2 /ZnO ratio, TiO2 /ZnO concentration, pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, ionic strength, temperature, and initial concentrations of Ni(II), Cu(II), and COD was investigated on the adsorption capacity of synthesized SSC/TiO2 /ZnO adsorbent. The pseudo-second order and Redlich-Peterson isotherm models were best described the kinetic and equilibrium data of Ni(II), Cu(II), and COD sorption. The maximum monolayer sorption capacities of Ni(II), Cu(II), and COD were found to be 62.3, 75.1, and 1,120.3 mg/g, respectively. The central composite design was used to investigate the interaction effects of pH and initial concentrations of Ni(II), Cu(II), and COD on the simultaneous removal of Ni(II), Cu(II), and COD from aqueous solutions in a ternary system. The potential of synthesized SSC/TiO2 /ZnO adsorbent was investigated for Ni(II), Cu(II), and COD adsorption from industrial wastewaters of Iran. PRACTITIONER POINTS: The novel sewage sludge carbon/TiO2 /ZnO adsorbent was synthesized. Adsorption of Ni(II), Cu(II), and chemical oxygen demands (COD) from industrial wastewaters was investigated. Maximum Ni(II), Cu(II), and COD sorption capacities were 62.3, 75.1, and 1,120.3 mg/g. Simultaneous removal of Ni(II), Cu(II), and COD was investigated in a ternary system.
