RESUMEN

The vomeronasal organ (VNO) is a tubular pheromone-sensing organ in which the lumen is covered with sensory and non-sensory epithelia. This study used immunohistochemistry and lectin histochemistry techniques to evaluate developmental changes, specifically of the glycoconjugate profile, in the horse VNO epithelium. Immunostaining analysis revealed PGP9.5 expression in some vomeronasal non-sensory epithelium (VNSE) cells and in the vomeronasal receptor cells of the vomeronasal sensory epithelium (VSE) in fetuses, young foals, and adult horses. Olfactory marker protein expression was exclusively localized in receptor cells of the VSE in fetuses, young foals, and adult horses and absent in VNSE. To identify the glycoconjugate type, lectin histochemistry was performed using 21 lectins. Semi-quantitative analysis revealed that the intensities of glycoconjugates labeled with WGA, DSL, LEL, and RCA120 were significantly higher in adult horse VSE than those in foal VSE, whereas the intensities of glycoconjugates labeled with LCA and PSA were significantly lower in adult horse VSE. The intensities of glycoconjugates labeled with s-WGA, WGA, BSL-II, DSL, LEL, STL, ConA, LCA, PSA, DBA, SBA, SJA, RCA120, jacalin, and ECL were significantly higher in adult horse VNSE than those in foal VNSE, whereas the intensity of glycoconjugates labeled with UEA-I was lower in adult horse VNSE. Histochemical analysis of each lectin revealed that various glycoconjugates in the VSE were present in the receptor, supporting, and basal cells of foals and adult horses. A similar pattern of lectin histochemistry was also observed in the VNSE of foals and adult horses. In conclusion, these results suggest that there is an increase in the level of N-acetylglucosamine (labeled by WGA, DSL, LEL) and galactose (labeled by RCA120) in horse VSE during postnatal development, implying that they may influence the function of VNO in adult horses.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of colic and the outcomes of colic surgery have not been surveyed in racetracks in Korea. OBJECTIVES: This study examined the incidence, mortality, and case fatality of colic and investigated the effects of age and sex after an exploratory celiotomy on the long-term survival rate (return to racing), subsequent racing performance, and career longevity. METHODS: The incidence, mortality, and case fatalities of colic were examined over an 11-year period. The records of 40 horses that had undergone a celiotomy, after participating in at least one race and 75 race-matched control horses were analyzed. The racing performance and career length of the horses that returned to racing post-surgery were compared with a control group. RESULTS: The annual incidence, fatality rate of colic, and annual mortality rate at Seoul Racecourse were 6.5, 2.8 per 100 horse-years, and 0.2 deaths cases per 100 horse-years, respectively. Of the 40 horses that underwent colic surgery, 26 (65%) returned to racing. The likelihood of returning to racing decreased with increasing age of the horses, and geldings had a lower probability of returning. While the performance in the five preoperative races between the two groups was not significantly different, a significant decrease in racing performance was observed after the surgery date (p < 0.01). Horses that underwent colic surgery did not show a significant decrease in career length. CONCLUSIONS: Surgical treatment for colic at the age of three and four years had a negative impact on the racing performance. On the other hand, there was no significant difference in career longevity between the two groups.

Extensive endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for gastric adenoma or early cancer can lead to post-ESD stenosis. This may cause a decrease in quality of life and an increase in medical issues. Therefore, this study examined the safety and effectiveness of gastric open peroral endoscopic myotomy (GO-POEM) in preventing stenosis following ESD. A retrospective investigation was carried out on 31 patients who underwent gastric ESD for > 75% of the lumen in the antrum or pylorus at the Presbyterian Medical Center in Korea between December 2004 and October 2022. The patients were divided into GO-POEM (n = 11) and non-GO-POEM groups (n = 20). The average age of the 31 patients was 73.23 years, and 18 were male. There were no differences in age, sex, location, gross findings, or procedure time between the 2 groups. In the GO-POEM group, only 1 patient (9 %) developed stenosis, compared to 11 patients (55 %) in the control group (P = .02). Multivariate analysis showed that the GO-POEM group had a significantly lower risk of post-ESD stenosis (P < .05). Stenosis symptoms resolved with a single endoscopic balloon dilatation (EBD) in 1 patient in the GO-POEM group. In contrast, 5 of 11 patients with stenosis in the non-GO-POEM group required a median of 2 EBD sessions (range, 1-8). GO-POEM may be an effective and reliable method for preventing stenosis post extensive gastric ESD. Further investigations are necessary to establish its efficacy and safety.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is an effective method for resecting gastric adenomas and adenocarcinomas. A significant discrepancy was observed between endoscopic and pathological sizes in samples obtained from patients undergoing ESD. This study elucidates the factors affecting size discrepancy after formalin fixation. METHODS: The records of 64 patients with 69 lesions were analyzed, including 50 adenomas and 19 adenocarcinomas. Data on location, gross shape, histology, and size after fixation in formalin were collected. RESULTS: The mean size of the resected specimen appeared to decrease after formalin fixation (37.5 mm prefixation vs. 35.8 mm postfixation, p<0.05). The mean long axis diameter of the lesions was 20.3±7.9 mm prefixation and 13.4±7.9 mm postfixation. Size differences in lesions smaller than 20 mm were significantly greater than those in lesions larger than 20 mm (7.6±5.6 mm vs. 2.5±5.8 mm, p<0.01). In multivariate analysis, a tumor size of ≥20 mm was found to be an independent factor affecting size postformalin fixation (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: The endoscopic size of lesions before ESD may be underestimated in tumors larger than 20 mm in size. Therefore, increased attention must be paid during ESD to avoid instances of incomplete resection.

A 52-year-old woman with a gastric outlet obstruction (GOO) caused by pyloric cancer underwent pyloric endoscopic self-expandable metal stent (SEMS) insertion. She presented with abdominal distension 40 days later. The SEMS was dysfunctional, and endoscopic ultrasound-guided gastrojejunostomy (EUS-GJ) was performed using an endoscopic nasobiliary drainage tube. A 16 mm×31 mm Niti-S ™ HOT SPAXUS™ (TaeWoong Medical, Gimpo, Korea) was inserted successfully between the stomach and the adjacent jejunum. After the procedure, the patient had a good oral intake for more than seven months. GOO is a mechanical obstructive condition caused by various benign and malignant conditions. Traditionally, surgical GJ and SEMS insertion have been used to treat GOOs. EUS-GJ is a feasible treatment option for patients with GOO and a pyloric metal stent dysfunction.

OBJECTIVE: Endoscopic resection of over 3/4 of the lumen of the antrum or pylorus is a known risk factor for post-endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) stenosis. Local or systemic steroids may reduce the risk of stenosis, but their overall role in stenosis prevention remains controversial. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of prophylactic gastric open peroral endoscopic myotomy (GO-POEM) in preventing post-ESD stenosis. METHODS: Ten patients who underwent GO-POEM during or immediately after ESD in the Presbyterian Medical Center between June 2017 and November 2020 were included. All patients underwent excision of over 3/4 of the lumen of the antrum or pylorus. GO-POEM was performed without submucosal tunneling. RESULTS: Well-differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma, tubulovillous adenoma with high-grade dysplasia, and tubular adenoma with low-grade dysplasia were diagnosed in three, one, and six patients, respectively. GO-POEM was performed successfully in all the 10 patients. Stenosis could not be evaluated in one patient, whereas one of the remaining nine patients developed post-ESD stenosis. GO-POEM decreased the risk of post-ESD stenosis in the other eight patients. Two patients presented with intraprocedural bleeding, both of whom were managed endoscopically successfully. CONCLUSIONS: Prophylactic GO-POEM may be a novel, effective and safe treatment modality for preventing post-ESD stenosis in the stomach. Well-designed, multicenter studies with large sample sizes are needed to confirm our results.

This study aimed to investigate whether breed, sex, and age affected temperament differently (more or less neophobic) in mature horses during a novel object test. The study included Jeju crossbred (n = 12, age = 9.42 ± 4.57 y), Thoroughbred (n = 15, age = 10.73 ± 3.09 y), and Warmblood horses (n = 12, age = 13.08 ± 3.55 y) with the females (n = 22, age = 11.36 ± 4.24 y) and geldings (n = 17, age = 10.65 ± 3.66 y). Jeju crossbreds (Jeju horse × Thoroughbred) are valuable considering their popular usage in Korea, but limited studies have explored temperament of Jeju crossbred horses. A trained experimenter touched the left side of the neck with a white plastic bag (novel object). The test ended when the horse stopped escape response and heart rate (HR) dropped to baseline. Behavioral score and escape duration were measured as behavioral variables. Multiple variables related to HR and heart rate variability (HRV) were measured to reflect emotional state. These included basal HR (BHR), maximum HR (MHR), delay to reach maximum heart rate (Time to MHR), standard deviation of beat-to-beat intervals (SDNN), root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD), and ratio of low to high frequency components of a continuous series of heartbeats (LF/HF). Statistics revealed that Thoroughbreds had significantly higher behavioral scores, and lower RMSSD than Jeju crossbreds (p < 0.05), suggesting greater excitement and fear to the novel object in Thoroughbreds. None of the behavioral or cardiac parameters exhibited sex differences (p < 0.05). Age was negatively correlated with SDNN and RMSSD (p < 0.05), indicating that older horses felt more anxiety to the novelty than younger horses. Thoroughbreds and females had distinct correlations between behavioral and HRV variables in comparison with other groups (p < 0.05), implying that escape duration might be a good indicator of stress, especially in these two groups. These results are expected to improve equine welfare, safety and utility, by providing insights into the temperament of particular horse groups, to better match reactivity levels with specific functions.

Cannulation of the portal vein is a rare complication of ERCP. This paper reports a case of portal vein catheterization during ERCP in a patient with choledocholithiasis. A 62-year-old man was admitted to the Presbyterian Medical Center with right upper quadrant pain and jaundice. ERCP was performed under the suspicion of obstructive jaundice caused by a radiolucent stone. Bile duct cannulation using a pull-type papillotome was attempted, but it failed. After needle-knife fistulotomy, wire-guided cannulation was performed successfully, and 10 mL contrast was injected. On the other hand, the fluoroscopy image showed that the contrast medium disappeared very quickly. Pure blood was collected when the catheter was aspirated to identify the bile reflux, indicating possible cannulation of the portal vein. The procedure was terminated immediately and abdominal computed tomography showed air in the portal vein. One day after, a follow-up CT scan showed no air in the portal vein. The patient underwent repeated ERCP, and the common bile duct was cannulated. In most cases, isolated portal vein cannulation does not result in severe morbidity. However, it is important to aware of this rare complication so that no further invasive procedure is performed on the patient.

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) syndrome is a relatively rare disease, characterized by the occurrence of multiple endocrine tumors in the parathyroid and pituitary glands as well as the pancreas. Here, we report a case of MEN1 with neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) in the stomach, duodenum, and pancreas. A 53-year-old man visited our hospital to manage gastric NET. Five years prior to his visit, he had undergone surgery for incidental meningioma. His brother had pancreatic nodules and a history of surgery for adrenal adenoma. His brother's daughter also had pancreatic nodules, but had not undergone surgery. The lesion was treated by endoscopic submucosal dissection and diagnosed as a grade 1 NET. Another small NET was detected in the second duodenal portion, resected by endoscopic submucosal dissection, which was also diagnosed as a grade 1 NET. During evaluation, three nodules were detected in the pancreas, and no evidence of pituitary, parathyroid tumors, or metastasis was observed. After surgery, the pancreatic lesions were diagnosed as NETs, with the same immunohistochemical patterns as those of the stomach and duodenum. Genetic testing was performed, and a heterozygous mutation was detected in the MEN1 gene, which is located on 11q13.

RESUMEN

Bougie or balloon dilation is a good short-term treatment for caustic esophageal strictures, although recurrence after dilation occurs in approximately 30% of these cases. Therefore, long-term treatment options are required in some cases, and endoscopic incisional therapy has been used for patients with an anastomotic stricture in the gastrointestinal tract. A 58-year-old woman presented with severe swallowing difficulty because of a caustic esophageal stricture, which was caused by accidental exposure to anhydrous acetic acid at infancy. She had undergone several previous bougie and balloon dilations but the stricture did not improve. We performed sequential treatment comprising incision with an insulated-tip knife, balloon dilation, and an oral steroid, which resulted in the patient's symptoms markedly improving. Thus, we report this case of an intractable caustic esophageal stricture, which was successfully treated using combined endoscopic sequential treatment.

Brain diseases and disorders such as Alzheimer disease, Parkinson disease, depression, schizophrenia, autism, and addiction lead to reduced quality of daily life through abnormal thoughts, perceptions, emotional states, and behavior. While the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood, human and animal studies have supported a role of neuroinflammation in the etiology of these diseases. In the central nervous system, an increased inflammatory response is capable of activating microglial cells, leading to the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines including interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α. In turn, the pro-inflammatory cytokines aggravate and propagate neuroinflammation, degenerating healthy neurons and impairing brain functions. Therefore, activated microglia may play a key role in neuroinflammatory processes contributing to the pathogenesis of psychiatric disorders and neurodegeneration.

Epigenetic alterations in gene expression are influenced by experiences and environment, resulting in significant variation of epigenetic markers from individual to individual. Therefore, it is imperative to measure various epigenetic markers simultaneously from samples of individual subjects to accurately analyze the epigenetic markers in biological samples. Moreover, the individualized genome-wide analysis has become a critical technology for recent trends in clinical applications such as early diagnosis and personalized medicine screening of numerous diseases. The array-based detection of modified histones, conventionally used for multiplexed analysis of epigenetic changes, requires pooling of samples from many subjects to analyze population-wise differences in the expression of histone markers and does not permit individualized analysis. Here, we report multiplexed detection of genome-wide changes in various histone modifications at a single-residue resolution using quantum dot (QD)-encoded polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) hydrogel microparticles. To demonstrate the potential of our methodology, we present the simultaneous detection of (1) acetylation of lysine 9 of histone 3 (Ac-H3K9), (2) dimethylation of H3K9 (2Me-H3K9), and (3) trimethylation of H3K9 (3Me-H3K9) from three distinct regions in the brain [nucleus accumbens (NAc), dorsal striatum (DSt), and cerebellum (Cbl)] of cocaine-exposed mice. Our hydrogel-based epigenetic assay enabled relative quantification of the three histone variants from only 10 µL of each brain lysate (protein content = ∼ 1 µg/µL) per mouse. We verified that the exposure to cocaine induced a significant increase of acetylation while a notable decrease in methylation in NAc.

BACKGROUND: Depression is one of the most prevalent mood disorders, and is known to be associated with abnormal functional connectivity in neural networks of the brain. Interestingly, a significant proportion of patients with depression experience spontaneous remission without any treatment. However, the relationship between electroencephalographic (EEG) functional connectivity and the spontaneous remission in depression remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated regional and network brain activity using EEG signals from a chronic restraint stress (CRS)-induced mouse model of depression. After 1 (CRS1W) or 3 weeks (CRS3W) following the cessation of a 4-week-long CRS, mice were subjected to depression-associated behavioral tasks. EEG signals were obtained from eight cortical regions (frontal, somatosensory, parietal, and visual cortices in each hemisphere). RESULTS: The CRS1W group exhibited behavioral dysfunctions in the open field and forced swim tasks, whereas the CRS3W group displayed normal levels of behaviors in those tasks. In a linear correlation analysis, the CRS1W group exhibited increased correlation coefficient values at all frequency bands (delta, 1.5-4; theta, 4-8; alpha, 8-12; beta, 12-30; gamma, 30-80 Hz) compared with the control group. However, the differences in delta- and gamma-frequency bands between the control and CRS1W groups were no longer observed in the CRS3W group. Persistent brain network homology revealed significantly different functional connectivity between the control and CRS1W groups, and it demonstrated a huge restoration of the decreased distances in the gamma-frequency band for the CRS3W group. Moreover, the CRS3W group displayed a similar strength of connectivity among somatosensory and frontal cortices as the control group. CONCLUSION: A mouse model of CRS-induced depression showed spontaneous behavioral remission of depressive behavior. Using persistent brain network homology analysis of EEG signals from eight cortical regions, we found that restoration of gamma activity at the network level is associated with behavioral remission.

Human cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen 4-immunoglobulin (hCTLA4Ig) is an immunosuppressive therapeutic, and recently produced rice cell-derived hCTLA4Ig (hCTLA4Ig(P)) reportedly exhibits in vitro immunosuppressive activities equivalent to those of Chinese hamster ovary cell-derived hCTLA4Ig (hCTLA4Ig(M)). However, limitations of hCTLA4Ig(P) include shortened in vivo half-life as well as the presence of nonhuman N-glycans containing (ß1-2)-xylose and α1,3-fucose, which cause immunogenic reactions in humans. In the present study, human ß1,4-galactose-extended hCTLA4Ig(P) (hCTLA4Ig(P)-Gal) was expressed through the coexpression of human ß1,4-galactosyltransferase (hGalT) and hCTLA4Ig in an attempt to overcome these unfavorable effects. The results indicated that both encoding hGalT and hCTLA4Ig were successfully coexpressed, and the analysis of N-glycan and its relative abundance in purified hCTLA4Ig(P)-Gal indicated that not only were the two glycans containing (ß1-4)-galactose newly extended, but also glycans containing both ß1,2-xylose and α1,3-fucose were markedly reduced and high-mannose-type glycans were increased compared to those of hCTLA4Ig(P), respectively. Unlike hCTLA4Ig(P), hCTLA4Ig(P)-Gal was effective as an acceptor via (ß1-4)-galactose for in vitro sialylation. Additionally, the serum half-life of intravenously injected hCTLA4Ig(P)-Gal in Sprague-Dawley rats was 1.9 times longer than that of hCTLA4Ig(P), and the clearance pattern of hCTLA4Ig(P)-Gal was close to that for hCTLA4Ig(M). These results indicate that the coexpression with hGalT and hCTLA4Ig(P) is useful for both reducing glycan immunogens and increasing in vivo stability. BACKGROUND: Maackia amurensis leukoagglutinin (MAL) is a glycoprotein and sialic acid-binding lectin that is used widely in the detection and characterization of sialoglycoconjugates and human cancer cells. However, its N-linked glycan structure and role have yet to be determined. METHODS: The N-linked glycans were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography with matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and the secondary structure was investigated using circular dichroism analysis. A hemagglutination assay was performed. Furthermore, surface plasmon resonance analysis, and fluorescence microscopy and fluorescence-activated cell-sorting analysis were conducted to assess the sialoglycoprotein-binding ability and its usefulness in the detection of human breast cancer MCF-7 cells, respectively. RESULTS: Analysis of the N-linked glycan structure of MAL confirmed the presence of eight glycans, comprising two α1,3-fucosylated paucimannosidic-type and six high-mannose-type glycans. Glycan analysis of MAL that had been treated with peptide N-glycosidase F (de-M-MAL) revealed that while the two α1,3-fucosylated paucimannosidic glycans remained attached following the treatment, the six high-mannose-type glycans had been completely cleaved from the original MAL. There were almost no secondary structural changes between MAL and de-M-MAL; however, the lectin activities exhibited by MAL, such as hemagglutination and binding to a sialoglycoprotein, were completely absent in de-M-MAL, and the ability to detect human breast cancer MCF-7 cells was 77% lower in de-M-MAL than in MAL. CONCLUSION: The high-mannose-type glycans in intact MAL are closely associated with its lectin activities. GENERAL SIGNIFICANCE: This is the first report of the N-linked glycan structure of MAL and the effect of high-mannose-type glycans on lectin activities.

While the emerging wire-shaped supercapacitors (WSS) have been demonstrated as promising energy storage devices to be implemented in smart textiles, challenges in achieving the combination of both high mechanical stretchability and excellent electrochemical performance still exist. Here, an asymmetric configuration is applied to the WSS, extending the potential window from 0.8 to 1.5 V, achieving tripled energy density and doubled power density compared to its asymmetric counterpart while accomplishing stretchability of up to 100% through the prestrainning-then-buckling approach. The stretchable asymmetric WSS constituted of MnO2/CNT hybrid fiber positive electrode, aerogel CNT fiber negative electrode and KOH-PVA electrolyte possesses a high specific capacitance of around 157.53 µF cm(-1) at 50 mV s(-1) and a high energy density varying from 17.26 to 46.59 nWh cm(-1) with the corresponding power density changing from 7.63 to 61.55 µW cm(-1). Remarkably, a cyclic tensile strain of up to 100% exerts negligible effects on the electrochemical performance of the stretchable asymmetric WSS. Moreover, after 10,000 galvanostatic charge-discharge cycles, the specific capacitance retains over 99%, demonstrating a long cyclic stability.

Carbon fiber reinforced composite has been a good candidate of lightweight structural component in the automotive industry. As fast production speed is essential to apply the composite materials for the mass production area such as automotive components, the high speed liquid composite molding processes have been developed. Fast resin injection through the fiber preform by high pressure is required to improve the production speed, but it often results in undesirable deformations of the fiber preform which causes defectives in size and properties of the final composite products. In order to prevent the undesirable deformation and improve the stability of preform shape, polymer type binder materials are used. More stable fiber preform can be obtained by increasing the amount of binder material, but it disturbs the resin impregnation through the fiber preform. In this study, carbon nanomaterials such as graphene oxide were embedded on the surface of carbon fiber by electrophoretic deposition method in order to improve the shape stability of fiber preform and interfacial bonding between polymer and the reinforcing fiber. Effects of the modified reinforcing fiber were investigated in two respects. One is to increase the binding energy between fiber tows, and the other is to increase the interfacial bonding between polymer matrix and fiber surface. The effects were analyzed by measuring the binding force of fiber preform and interlaminar shear strength of the composite. This study also investigated the high speed liquid molding process of the composite materials composed of polymer matrix and the carbon fiber preforms embedded by carbon nanomaterials. Process parameter such as permeability of fiber preform was measured to investigate the effect of nanoscale surface modification on the macroscale processing condition for composite manufacturing.

Cryptococcus neoformans, an encapsulated fungus, is an important opportunistic pathogen that can cause meningitis in im-munocompromised patients. Since patients with cryptococcemia have high mortality, it is essential to make an early diagnosis and promptly initiate antifungal therapy. However, it is often very difficult to differentiate between cryptococcal meningitis and hepatic encephalopathy in patients with liver cirrhosis, and there is delay in making the diagnosis. Therefore, these patients have a particularly grave prognosis and consequently many patients die before culture results become available. In one study, starting antifungal therapy within 48 hours of the blood culture was associated with improved survival, but patients with liver cirrhosis were significantly less likely to receive antifungal therapy within 48 hours compared to those without liver cirrhosis. Recently, the authors experience a case of a 68-year-old woman with liver cirrhosis who presented with fever and a drowsy mental status. She had a previous history of having been admitted for infection-associated hepatic encephlopathy. Cryptococcal meningitis and cryptococcemia were diagnosed by spinal puncture and culture of cerebrospinal fluid. In spite of adequate treatment, the patient developed multi-system organ failure and eventually expired. Herein, we report a case of cryptococcal meningitis mimicking hepatic encephalopathy in a patient with liver cirrhosis.

Due to their exceptional flexibility and transparency, CVD graphene films have been regarded as an ideal replacement of indium tin oxide for transparent electrodes, especially in applications where electronic devices may be subjected to large tensile strain. However, the search for a desirable combination of stretchability and electrochemical performance of such devices remains a huge challenge. Here, we demonstrate the implementation of a laminated ultrathin CVD graphene film as a stretchable and transparent electrode for supercapacitors. Transferred and buckled on PDMS substrates by a prestraininig-then-buckling strategy, the four-layer graphene film maintained its outstanding quality, as evidenced by Raman spectra. Optical transmittance of up to 72.9% at a wavelength of 550 nm and stretchability of 40% were achieved. As the tensile strain increased up to 40%, the specific capacitance showed no degradation and even increased slightly. Furthermore, the supercapacitor demonstrated excellent frequency capability with small time constants under stretching.

Many brain diseases or disorders, such as depression, are known to be associated with abnormal functional connectivity in neural networks in the brain. Some bivariate measures of electroencephalography (EEG) for coupling analysis have been used widely in attempts to explain abnormalities related with depression. However, brain network evolution based on persistent functional connections in EEG signals could not be easily unveiled. For a geometrical exploration of brain network evolution, here, we used persistent brain network homology analysis with EEG signals from a corticosterone (CORT)-induced mouse model of depression. EEG signals were obtained from eight cortical regions (frontal, somatosensory, parietal, and visual cortices in each hemisphere). The persistent homology revealed a significantly different functional connectivity between the control and CORT model, but no differences in common coupling measures, such as cross correlation and coherence, were apparent. The CORT model showed a more localized connectivity and decreased global connectivity than the control. In particular, the somatosensory and parietal cortices were loosely connected in the CORT model. Additionally, the CORT model displayed altered connections among the cortical regions, especially between the frontal and somatosensory cortices, versus the control. This study demonstrates that persistent homology is useful for brain network analysis, and our results indicate that the CORT-induced depression mouse model shows more localized and decreased global connectivity with altered connections, which may facilitate characterization of the abnormal brain network underlying depression.
