RESUMEN

Additive manufacturing (AM) technology has recently seen increased utilization due to its versatility in using functional materials, offering a new pathway for next-generation conformal electronics in the smart sensor field. However, the limited availability of polymer-based ultraviolet (UV)-curable materials with enhanced piezoelectric properties necessitates the development of a tailorable process suitable for 3D printing. This paper investigates the structural, thermal, rheological, mechanical, and piezoelectric properties of a newly developed sensor resin material. The polymer resin is based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as a matrix, mixed with constituents enabling UV curability, and boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) are added to form a nanocomposite resin. The results demonstrate the successful micro-scale printability of the developed polymer and nanocomposite resins using a liquid crystal display (LCD)-based 3D printer. Additionally, incorporating BNNTs into the polymer matrix enhanced the piezoelectric properties, with an increase in the voltage response by up to 50.13%. This work provides new insights for the development of 3D printable flexible sensor devices and energy harvesting systems.

Polymer nanofibers hold promise in a wide range of applications owing to their diverse properties, flexibility, and cost effectiveness. In this study, we introduce a polymer nanofiber drawing process in a scanning electron microscope and focused ion beam (SEM/FIB) instrument with in situ observation. We employed a nanometer-sharp tungsten needle and prepolymer microcapsules to enable nanofiber drawing in a vacuum environment. This method produces individual polymer nanofibers with diameters as small as ∼500 nm and lengths extending to millimeters, yielding nanofibers with an aspect ratio of 2000:1. The attachment to the tungsten manipulator ensures accurate transfer of the polymer nanofiber to diverse substrate types as well as fabrication of assembled structures. Our findings provide valuable insights into ultrafine polymer fiber drawing, paving the way for high-precision manipulation and assembly of polymer nanofibers.

Plants are remarkable in their ability to adapt to changing environments, with receptor-like kinases (RLKs) playing a pivotal role in perceiving and transmitting environmental cues into cellular responses. Despite extensive research on RLKs from the plant kingdom, the function and activity of many kinases, i.e., their substrates or "clients", remain uncharted. To validate a novel client prediction workflow and learn more about an important RLK, this study focuses on P2K1 (DORN1), which acts as a receptor for extracellular ATP (eATP), playing a crucial role in plant stress resistance and immunity. We designed a Kinase-Client (KiC) assay library of 225 synthetic peptides, incorporating previously identified P2K phosphorylated peptides and novel predictions from a deep-learning phosphorylation site prediction model (MUsite) and a trained hidden Markov model (HMM) based tool, HMMER. Screening the library against purified P2K1 cytosolic domain (CD), we identified 46 putative substrates, including 34 novel clients, 27 of which may be novel peptides, not previously identified experimentally. Gene Ontology (GO) analysis among phosphopeptide candidates revealed proteins associated with important biological processes in metabolism, structure development, and response to stress, as well as molecular functions of kinase activity, catalytic activity, and transferase activity. We offer selection criteria for efficient further in vivo experiments to confirm these discoveries. This approach not only expands our knowledge of P2K1's substrates and functions but also highlights effective prediction algorithms for identifying additional potential substrates. Overall, the results support use of the KiC assay as a valuable tool in unraveling the complexities of plant phosphorylation and provide a foundation for predicting the phosphorylation landscape of plant species based on peptide library results.

It is known that many diabetic patients experience testicular atrophy. This study sought to investigate the effect of 4-hexylresorcinol (4HR) on testicular function in rats with streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes, focusing on testicular weight, sperm motility, histological alterations, and serum testosterone levels to understand the efficacy of 4HR on testes. Our findings reveal that 4HR treatment significantly improves testicular health in diabetic rats. Notably, the STZ group exhibited a testicular weight of 1.22 ± 0.48 g, whereas the STZ/4HR group showed a significantly enhanced weight of 1.91 ± 0.26 g (p < 0.001), aligning closely with the control group's weight of 1.99 ± 0.17 g and the 4HR group's weight of 2.05 ± 0.24 g, indicating no significant difference between control and 4HR groups (p > 0.05). Furthermore, the STZ/4HR group demonstrated significantly improved sperm motility compared to the STZ group, with apoptotic indicators notably reduced in the STZ/4HR group relative to the STZ group (p < 0.05). These results underscore the therapeutic potential of 4HR for maintaining testicular function under diabetic conditions.

Body mass index (BMI), as an important risk factor related to metabolic disease. However, in some studies higher BMI was emphasized as a beneficial factor in the clinical course of patients after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in a concept known as the "BMI paradox." The purpose of this study was to investigate how clinical outcomes of patients treated for AMI differed according to BMI levels. A total of 10,566 patients in the Korea Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry-National Institutes of Health (KAMIR-NIH) from May 2010 to June 2015 were divided into three BMI groups (group 1: BMI < 22 kg/m2, group 2: ≥ 22 and < 26 kg/m2, and group 3: ≥ 26 kg/m2). The primary outcome was major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular event (MACCE) at 3 years of follow-up. At 1 year of follow-up, the incidence of MACCE in group 1 was 10.1% of that in group 3, with a hazard ratio (HR) of 2.27, and 6.5% in group 2, with an HR of 1.415. This tendency continued up to 3 years of follow-up. The study demonstrated that lower incidence of MACCE in the high BMI group of Asians during the 3-year follow-up period compared to the low BMI group. The results implied higher BMI could exert a positive effect on the long-term clinical outcomes of patients with AMI undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).

The ubiquitin/26S proteasome system is a crucial regulatory mechanism that governs various cellular processes in plants, including signal transduction, transcriptional regulation, and responses to biotic and abiotic stressors. Our study shows that the RING-H2-type E3 ubiquitin ligase, Arabidopsis Tóxicos en Levadura 2 (ATL2), is involved in response to fungal pathogen infection. Under normal growth conditions, the expression of the ATL2 gene is low, but it is rapidly and significantly induced by exogenous chitin. Additionally, ATL2 protein stability is markedly increased via chitin treatment, and its degradation is prolonged when 26S proteasomal function is inhibited. We found that an atl2 null mutant exhibited higher susceptibility to Alternaria brassicicola, while plants overexpressing ATL2 displayed increased resistance. We also observed that the hyphae of A. brassicicola were strongly stained with trypan blue staining, and the expression of A. brassicicola Cutinase A (AbCutA) was dramatically increased in atl2. In contrast, the hyphae were weakly stained, and AbCutA expression was significantly reduced in ATL2-overexpressing plants. Using bioinformatics, live-cell confocal imaging, and cell fractionation analysis, we revealed that ATL2 is localized to the plasma membrane. Further, it is demonstrated that the ATL2 protein possesses E3 ubiquitin ligase activity and found that cysteine 138 residue is critical for its function. Moreover, ATL2 is necessary to successfully defend against the A. brassicicola fungal pathogen. Altogether, our data suggest that ATL2 is a plasma membrane-integrated protein with RING-H2-type E3 ubiquitin ligase activity and is essential for the defense response against fungal pathogens in Arabidopsis.

Wings of Morph aega butterflies are natural surfaces that exhibit anisotropic liquid wettability. The direction-dependent arrangement of the wing scales creates orientation-turnable microstructures with two distinct contact modes for liquid droplets. Enabled by recent developments in additive manufacturing, such natural surface designs coupled with hydrophobicity play a crucial role in applications such as self-cleaning, anti-icing, and fluidic manipulation. However, the interplay among resolution, architecture, and performance of bioinspired structures is barely achieved. Herein, inspired by the wing scales of the Morpho aega butterfly, full-scale synthetic surfaces with anisotropic wettability fabricated by two-photon polymerization are reported. The quality of the artificial butterfly scale is improved by optimizing the laser scanning strategy and the objective lens movement path. The corresponding contact angles of water on the fabricated architecture with various design parameters are measured, and the anisotropic fluidic wettability is investigated. Results demonstrate that tuning the geometrical parameters and spatial arrangement of the artificial wing scales enables anisotropic behaviors of the droplet's motion. The measured results also indicate a reverse phenomenon of the fabricated surfaces in contrast to their natural counterparts, possibly attributed to the significant difference in equilibrium wettability between the fabricated microstructures and the natural Morpho aega surface. These findings are utilized to design next-generation fluid-controllable interfaces for manipulating liquid mobility on synthetic surfaces.

Recent developments in micro-scale additive manufacturing (AM) have opened new possibilities in state-of-the-art areas, including microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) with intrinsically soft and compliant components. While fabrication with soft materials further complicates micro-scale AM, a soft photocurable polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) resin, IP-PDMS, has recently entered the market of two-photon polymerization (2PP) AM. To facilitate the development of microdevices with soft components through the application of 2PP technique and IP-PDMS material, this research paper presents a comprehensive material characterization of IP-PDMS. The significance of this study lies in the scarcity of existing research on this material and the thorough investigation of its properties, many of which are reported here for the first time. Particularly, for uncured IP-PDMS resin, this work evaluates a surface tension of 26.7 ± 4.2 mN/m, a contact angle with glass of 11.5 ± 0.6°, spin-coating behavior, a transmittance of more than 90% above 440 nm wavelength, and FTIR with all the properties reported for the first time. For cured IP-PDMS, novel characterizations include a small mechanical creep, a velocity-dependent friction coefficient with glass, a typical dielectric permittivity value of 2.63 ± 0.02, a high dielectric/breakdown strength for 3D-printed elastomers of up to 73.3 ± 13.3 V/µm and typical values for a spin coated elastomer of 85.7 ± 12.4 V/µm, while the measured contact angle with water of 103.7 ± 0.5°, Young's modulus of 5.96 ± 0.2 MPa, and viscoelastic DMA mechanical characterization are compared with the previously reported values. Friction, permittivity, contact angle with water, and some of the breakdown strength measurements were performed with spin-coated cured IP-PDMS samples. Based on the performed characterization, IP-PDMS shows itself to be a promising material for micro-scale soft MEMS, including microfluidics, storage devices, and micro-scale smart material technologies.

Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) is a noninflammatory arterial diseases that affects predominantly women. Multiple studies have demonstrated an increased prevalence of FMD in patients who experience carotid or vertebral artery dissection (VAD). This case report presents a 57-year-old female who presented with a headache and was diagnosed with partially thrombosed giant aneurysm of vertebral artery. This aneurysm was successfully treated with flow-diverter and coil, but new onset rupture of vertebral artery was detected two weeks later, leading to internal trapping. This case report underscores the need for awareness and understanding of treatment of dissection and aneurysm in patient who is suspected FMD.

OBJECTIVE: While patients with medically intractable acute cerebellar infarction typically undergo suboccipital craniectomy and removal of the infarcted tissue, this procedure is associated with long operating times and postoperative complications. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of minimally invasive navigationguided burr hole aspiration surgery for the treatment of acute cerebellar infarction. METHODS: Between January 2015 and December 2021, 14 patients with acute cerebellar infarction, who underwent navigation-guided burr hole aspiration surgery, were enrolled in this study. RESULTS: The preoperative mean Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score was 12.7, and the postoperative mean GCS score was 14.3. The mean infarction volume was 34.3 cc at admission and 23.5 cc immediately following surgery. Seven days after surgery, the mean infarction volume was 15.6 cc. There were no surgery-related complications during the 6-month follow-up period and no evidence of clinical deterioration. The mean operation time from skin incision to catheter insertion was 28 min, with approximately an additional 13 min for extra-ventricular drainage. The mean Glasgow Outcome Scale score after 6 months was 4.8. CONCLUSIONS: Navigation-guided burr hole aspiration surgery is less time-consuming and invasive than conventional craniectomy, and is a safe and effective treatment option for acute cerebellar infarction in selected cases, with no surgery-related complication.

Extracellular ATP (eATP) in plants plays a crucial role as a ligand for purinoreceptors, mediating purinergic signaling and regulating diverse biological functions, including responses to abiotic and biotic stresses. DORN1/P2K1 (LecRK I.9) was the first identified plant purinoreceptor. P2K2 (LecRK I.5) was subsequently identified as an additional plant purinoreceptor and shown to directly interact with P2K1. Recently, we reported that P2K1 interacts with Integrin-linked kinase 5 (ILK5), a Raf-like MAPKKK protein, and phosphorylates ILK5 to regulate purinergic signaling in relation to plant innate immunity. Here, we report that P2K2 also interacts with the ILK5 protein in planta. Furthermore, we demonstrate that P2K2 phosphorylates ILK5 in the presence of [γ-32P] ATP, similar to P2K1. However, unlike P2K1, P2K2 exhibits strong phosphorylation even when the Serine 192 residue of ILK5 is mutated to Alanine (ILK5S192A), suggesting the possibility of phosphorylation of other residues to fully regulate ILK5 protein function.

As an urgent international challenge, the sudden change in climate due to global warming needs to be addressed in the near future. This can be achieved through a reduction in fossil fuel utilization and through carbon sequestration, which reduces the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere. In this study, a self-sustainable impact sensor is proposed through implementing a triboelectric nanogenerator with a CaCO3 contact layer fabricated via a CO2 absorption method. The triboelectric polarity of CaCO3 with the location between the polyimide and the paper and the effects of varying the crystal structure are investigated first. The impact sensing characteristics are then confirmed at various input frequencies and under applied forces. Further, the high mechanical strength and strong adherence of CaCO3 on the surface of the device are demonstrated through enhanced durability compared to the unmodified device. For the intended application, the as-fabricated sensor is used to detect the turning state of the paper Ddakji in a slap match game using a supervised learning algorithm based on a support vector machine presenting a high classification accuracy of 95.8%. The robust CaCO3-based triboelectric device can provide an eco-friendly advantage due to its self-powered characteristics for impact sensing and carbon sequestration.

Statin therapy is essential for secondary prevention in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). However, the effects of statin therapy in patients receiving chronic dialysis remain uncertain. We aimed to evaluate the effect of statin therapy on long-term mortality in patients on dialysis after a first-time ASCVD. Patients receiving maintenance dialysis aged ≥ 18 years with a first-time ASCVD event between 2013 and 2018 were included in the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. Associations of statin use with long-term mortality were examined using Cox proportional hazards regression models adjusted for demographics and comorbidities. Among 17,242 patients on dialysis, 9611 (55.7%) were prescribed statins after a first-time ASCVD event. Among statin users, 7376 (76.7%) used moderate-intensity statins. During a mean follow-up of 32.6 ± 20.9 months, statin use was associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality than statin nonuse after adjusting for confounding factors (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.92; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.88-0.97; p = 0.0009). Despite a lack of evidence, more than half of patients on dialysis were prescribed statins after an ASCVD event. In patients on dialysis after ASCVD, statin therapy significantly reduced the risk of long-term all-cause mortality.

With increasing demand for energy, the penetration of alternative sources such as renewable energy in power grids has increased. Solar energy is one of the most common and well-known sources of energy in existing networks. But because of its non-stationary and non-linear characteristics, it needs to predict solar irradiance to provide more reliable Photovoltaic (PV) plants and manage the power of supply and demand. Although there are various methods to predict the solar irradiance. This paper gives the overview of recent studies with focus on solar irradiance forecasting with ensemble methods which are divided into two main categories: competitive and cooperative ensemble forecasting. In addition, parameter diversity and data diversity are considered as competitive ensemble forecasting and also preprocessing and post-processing are as cooperative ensemble forecasting. All these ensemble forecasting methods are investigated in this study. In the end, the conclusion has been drawn and the recommendations for future studies have been discussed.

WDR11, a gene associated with Kallmann syndrome, is important in reproductive system development but molecular understanding of its action remains incomplete. We previously reported that Wdr11-deficient embryos exhibit defective ciliogenesis and developmental defects associated with Hedgehog (HH) signalling. Here we demonstrate that WDR11 is required for primordial germ cell (PGC) development, regulating canonical and noncanonical HH signalling in parallel. Loss of WDR11 disrupts PGC motility and proliferation driven by the cilia-independent, PTCH2/GAS1-dependent noncanonical HH pathway. WDR11 modulates the growth of somatic cells surrounding PGCs by regulating the cilia-dependent, PTCH1/BOC-dependent canonical HH pathway. We reveal that PTCH1/BOC or PTCH2/GAS1 receptor context dictates SMO localisation inside or outside of cilia, respectively, and loss of WDR11 affects the signalling responses of SMO in both situations. We show that GAS1 is induced by PTCH2-specific HH signalling, which is lost in the absence of WDR11. We also provide evidence supporting a role for WDR11 in ciliogenesis through regulation of anterograde intraflagellar transport potentially via its interaction with IFT20. Since WDR11 is a target of noncanonical SMO signalling, WDR11 represents a novel mechanism by which noncanonical and canonical HH signals communicate and cooperate.

Background The benefits of long-term maintenance beta-blocker (BB) therapy in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) have not been well established. Methods and Results Using the Korean nationwide registry, a total of 7159 patients with AMI treated with PCI who received BBs at discharge and were free from death or cardiovascular events for 3 months after PCI were included in the analysis. Patients were divided into 4 groups according to BB maintenance duration: <12 months, 12 to <24 months, 24 to <36 months, and ≥36 months. The primary outcome was the composite of all-cause death, recurrent MI, heart failure, or hospitalization for unstable angina. During a mean 5.0±2.8 years of follow-up, over half of patients with AMI (52.5%) continued BB therapy beyond 3 years following PCI. After propensity score matching and propensity score marginal mean weighting through stratification, a stepwise inverse correlation was noted between BB duration and risk of the primary outcome (<12 months: hazard ratio [HR], 2.19 [95% CI, 1.95-2.46]; 12 to <24 months: HR, 2.10 [95% CI, 1.81-2.43];, and 24 to <36 months: HR, 1.68 [95%CI, 1.45-1.94]; reference: ≥36 months). In a 3-year landmark analysis, BB use for <36 months was associated with an increased risk of the primary outcome (adjusted HR, 1.59 [95% CI, 1.37-1.85]) compared with BB use for ≥36 months. Conclusions Among stabilized patients with AMI following PCI, longer maintenance BB therapy, especially for >36 months, was associated with better clinical outcomes. These findings might imply that a better prognosis can be expected if patients with AMI maintain BB therapy for ≥36 months after PCI. The demand for deep learning frameworks capable of running in edge computing environments is rapidly increasing due to the exponential growth of data volume and the need for real-time processing. However, edge computing environments often have limited resources, necessitating the distribution of deep learning models. Distributing deep learning models can be challenging as it requires specifying the resource type for each process and ensuring that the models are lightweight without performance degradation. To address this issue, we propose the Microservice Deep-learning Edge Detection (MDED) framework, designed for easy deployment and distributed processing in edge computing environments. The MDED framework leverages Docker-based containers and Kubernetes orchestration to obtain a pedestrian-detection deep learning model with a speed of up to 19 FPS, satisfying the semi-real-time condition. The framework employs an ensemble of high-level feature-specific networks (HFN) and low-level feature-specific networks (LFN) trained on the MOT17Det dataset, achieving an accuracy improvement of up to AP50 and AP0.18 on MOT20Det data.

Drawing on Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory (1977), this study examined the antecedents and outcomes of internalized model minority myth (MMM) within the microsystem of family and the macrosystem of culture. Among Korean immigrant families, we examined how mothers' internalized MMM (i.e., achievement orientation, unrestricted mobility) and youth's cultural orientations (i.e., acculturation, enculturation) were related to youth's internalized MMM and had direct and indirect relations to youth outcomes (i.e., life satisfaction, depression, antisocial behaviors, and academic performance). In a sample of 334 Korean immigrant mother-youth dyads (155 female youth; 132 foreign-born youth; Mage of youth = 16.37; Mage of mothers = 46.94), we conducted a path analysis by using the maximum likelihood and bootstrapping methods. A path analysis revealed mothers' achievement orientation was indirectly related to youth's academic performance via youth's beliefs in unrestricted mobility. In general, mothers' internalized MMM had harmful relationships to youth's depression and antisocial behaviors versus mixed relationships to academic performance. Importantly, mothers' internalized MMM indicated greater direct and indirect associations with youth outcomes than youth's own internalized MMM. A follow-up analysis of moderated mediation ruled out the possibility that academic performance moderated the relations of youth's internalized MMM and outcomes and thus masked any significant associations. Overall, the current findings highlighted the importance of understanding the internalized MMM within the microsystem of the close-knit Korean immigrant family relations. Implications for research, family intervention, parent education and outreach were discussed.
