Microalgae are unicellular, photosynthetic organisms in aquatic environments and are sensitive to water quality and contaminants. While green algae and diatoms are widely used for toxicity assessments, there is a relatively limited amount of toxicity data available for freshwater dinoflagellates. Here, we evaluated the sub-lethal effects of the metals Cu, Cr, Ni, and Zn and the herbicides atrazine and S-metolachlor on the freshwater dinoflagellate Palatinus apiculatus. Based on the 72-h median effective concentration (EC50), P. apiculatus showed sensitive responses to metals in the order of Cu (0.052 mg L-1), Cr (0.085 mg L-1), Zn (0.098 mg L-1), and Ni (0.13 mg L-1). Among the tested herbicides, P. apiculatus was more sensitive to atrazine (0.0048 mg L-1) than S-metolachlor (0.062 mg L-1). In addition, we observed morphological alterations and significant increases in reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in cells exposed to 0.05 mg L-1 of Cu and 0.005 mg L-1 of atrazine. These indicated that metals and pesticides induced oxidative stress in cellular metabolic processes and consequently caused severe physiological damage to the cells. Our results provide baseline data on the toxic effects of typical environmental contaminants on freshwater dinoflagellate, suggesting that P. apiculatus could be used as a bioindicator in freshwater toxicity assessments. PRACTITIONER POINTS: The sub-lethal effects of metals and pesticides on the freshwater dinoflagellate Palatinus apiculatus were evaluated. Palatinus sensitively responded to metals and pesticides; of test chemicals, atrazine (0.0048 mg L-1 of EC50) was the most sensitive. Metals and pesticides induced oxidative stress and consequently caused severe physiological damage to the Palatinus cells. The freshwater dinoflagellate Palatinus can be used as a bioindicator in freshwater toxicity assessments.

Prior studies demonstrate that muscle and bone health are integrally related, and both independently impact orthopedic surgery outcomes. However, relationships between bone density, in vivo microarchitecture, and muscle area have not been previously investigated in orthopedic surgery patients. This study assessed associations between psoas cross sectional area (CSA), bone mineral density (BMD), and microstructure in a cohort undergoing spine fusion. Pre-operatively, bilateral psoas CSA was measured on axial lumbar spine CT in the L3-L4 disc space. To adjust for body size, Psoas Muscle Index (PMI) was calculated (CSA divided by the square of patient height). High resolution peripheral quantitative CT (HR-pQCT, XtremeCT2) assessed volumetric BMD (vBMD), cortical (Ct) and trabecular (Tb) microarchitecture at the distal radius and tibia. Areal BMD (aBMD) was measured by DXA at the lumbar spine (LS), total hip (TH), femoral neck (FN), and the 1/3 radius (1/3R). Pearson correlations related psoas CSA and bone imaging parameters before and after correcting for height and weight. Among 88 patients included, mean age was 63 ± 12 years, BMI was 28 ± 7 kg/m2, 47 (53 %) were female. Larger psoas CSA was associated with higher vBMD, greater Ct thickness and better Tb microarchitecture (higher Tb number and lower Tb separation) at the tibia and radius. Larger psoas CSA was also associated with greater aBMD at TH and FN bilaterally and 1/3R (r 0.33 to 0.61; p < 0.002 for all comparisons). Psoas CSA was not associated with aBMD at the LS. Similar results were observed when relating PMI, and adjusting for age, height and weight to HR-pQCT and DXA measurements. Investigation of subgroups by sex demonstrated that relationships were similar magnitude among women but not the men. Patients who underwent primary compared to revision spine surgery had similar associations. Our results demonstrate a link between psoas muscle size and peripheral bone microarchitecture among patients undergoing posterior lumbar spinal fusion. Given the importance of both muscle and skeletal integrity to the success of spine surgery, further study regarding the associations between measurements of psoas muscle, bone microarchitecture, and surgical outcomes is warranted.

Methyltransferase-like (METTL)18 has histidine methyltransferase activity on the RPL3 protein and is involved in ribosome biosynthesis and translation elongations. Several studies have reported that actin polymerization serves as a Src regulator, and HSP90 is involved in forming polymerized actin bundles. To understand the role of METTL18 in breast cancer and to demonstrate the importance of METTL18 in HER-2 negative breast cancer metastasis, we used biochemical, molecular biological, and immunological approaches in vitro (breast tumor cell lines), in vivo (tumor xenograft model), and in samples of human breast tumors. A gene expression comparison of 31 METTL series genes and 22 methyltransferases in breast cancer patients revealed that METTL18 is highly amplified in human HER2-negative breast cancer. In addition, elevated levels of METTL18 expression in patients with HER2-negative breast cancer are associated with poor prognosis. Loss of METTL18 significantly reduced the metastatic responses of breast tumor cells in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, METTL18 indirectly regulates the phosphorylation of the proto-oncogene tyrosine-protein kinase Src and its downstream molecules in MDA-MB-231 cells via METTL18-mediated RPL3 methylation, which is also involved in determining HSP90 integrity and protein levels. In confocal microscopy and F/G-actin assays, METTL18 was found to induce actin polymerization via HSP90. Molecular events involving METTL18, RPL3, HSP90, and actin polymerization yielded Src phosphorylated at both tyrosine 419 and tyrosine 530 with kinase activity and oncogenic functions. Therefore, it is suggested that the METTL18-HSP90-Actin-Src regulatory axis plays critical oncogenic roles in the metastatic responses of HER2-negative breast cancer and could be a promising therapeutic target.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective Cohort Study. OBJECTIVES: Length of Stay (LOS) and resource utilization are of primary importance for hospital administration. This study aimed to understand the incremental effect of having a specific complication on LOS among ASD patients. METHODS: A retrospective examination of prospective multicenter data utilized patients without a complication prior to discharge to develop a patient-adjusted and surgery-adjusted predictive model of LOS among ASD patients. The model was later applied to patients with at least 1 complication prior to discharge to investigate incremental effect of each identified complication on LOS vs the expected LOS. RESULTS: 571/1494 (38.2%) patients experienced at least 1 complication before discharge with a median LOS of 7 [IQR 5 to 9]. Univariate analysis demonstrated that LOS was significantly affected by patients' demographics (age, CCI, sex, disability, deformity) and surgical strategy (invasiveness, fusion length, posterior MIS fusion, direct decompression, osteotomy severity, IBF use, EBL, ASA, ICU stay, day between stages, Date of Sx). Using patients with at least 1 complication prior discharge and compared to the patient-and-surgery adjusted prediction, having a minor complication increased the expected LOS by 0.9 day(s), a major complication by 3.9 days, and a major complication with reoperation by 6.3 days. CONCLUSION: Complications following surgery for ASD correction have different, but predictable impact on LOS. Some complications requiring minimal intervention are associated with significant and substantial increases in LOS, while complications with significant impact on patient quality of life may have no influence on LOS.

Clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP), a premalignant expansion of mutated hematopoietic stem cells, is linked to immune alterations. Given the role of neuroinflammation and immune dysfunction in Parkinson's disease (PD), we hypothesized a connection between CHIP and PD. We analyzed peripheral blood DNA from 341 PD, 92 isolated REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) patients, and 5003 controls using targeted sequencing of 24 genes associated with hematologic neoplasms. PD cases were classified by clinical progression mode: fast, slow, and typical. Using multivariable logistic regression models, CHIP prevalence was assessed against controls with a 1.0% variant allele fraction threshold. CHIP with TET2 mutations was more prevalent in PD than controls (aOR 1.75, 95% CI 1.11-2.77, p = 0.017), particularly in the fast motor progression subgroup (aOR 3.19, p = 0.004). No distinct associations were observed with iRBD. PD is linked to increased odds of CHIP with TET2 mutations, suggesting immune dysregulation in PD pathophysiology.

BACKGROUND: Our understanding of the relationship between sagittal alignment and mechanical complications is evolving. In normal spines, the L1-pelvic angle (L1PA) accounts for the magnitude and distribution of lordosis and is strongly associated with pelvic incidence (PI), and the T4-pelvic angle (T4PA) is within 4° of the L1PA. We aimed to examine the clinical implications of realignment to a normal L1PA and T4-L1PA mismatch. METHODS: A prospective multicenter adult spinal deformity registry was queried for patients who underwent fixation from the T1-T5 region to the sacrum and had 2-year radiographic follow-up. Normal sagittal alignment was defined as previously described for normal spines: L1PA = PI × 0.5 - 21°, and T4-L1PA mismatch = 0°. Mechanical failure was defined as severe proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK), displaced rod fracture, or reoperation for junctional failure, pseudarthrosis, or rod fracture within 2 years. Multivariable nonlinear logistic regression was used to define target ranges for L1PA and T4-L1PA mismatch that minimized the risk of mechanical failure. The relationship between changes in T4PA and changes in global sagittal alignment according to the C2-pelvic angle (C2PA) was determined using linear regression. Lastly, multivariable regression was used to assess associations between initial postoperative C2PA and patient-reported outcomes at 1 year, adjusting for preoperative scores and age. RESULTS: The median age of the 247 included patients was 64 years (interquartile range, 57 to 69 years), and 202 (82%) were female. Deviation from a normal L1PA or T4-L1PA mismatch in either direction was associated with a significantly higher risk of mechanical failure, independent of age. Risk was minimized with an L1PA of PI × 0.5 - (19° ± 2°) and T4-L1PA mismatch between -3° and +1°. Changes in T4PA and in C2PA at the time of final follow-up were strongly associated (r2 = 0.96). Higher postoperative C2PA was independently associated with more disability, more pain, and worse self-image at 1 year. CONCLUSIONS: We defined sagittal alignment targets using L1PA (relative to PI) and the T4-L1PA mismatch, which are both directly modifiable during surgery. In patients undergoing long fusion to the sacrum, realignment based on these targets may lead to fewer mechanical failures. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Therapeutic Level III. STUDY DESIGN: Case-based survey. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate what a group of surgeons learned from their own revisions, and what they would do differently today. METHODS: A multi-center database of ASD surgical patients was queried to identify those with at least 2 surgical procedures performed by the same surgeon between 2009 and 2019. A clinical vignette was created for each case including demographics, a timeline of events, radiographs/measurements, patient-reported outcomes, complications, and surgical strategies used for the index and revision surgeries. The operative surgeon was then asked to fill out a five-question survey aimed at determining factors that contribute to operative decision-making and planning. RESULTS: 86 patients were operated on by 6 participating surgeons for both index and revision ASD surgery. The revised patients had similar follow-up compared to the non-revised group (P = 0.73), with the most common complications indicating a need for revision surgery being proximal junctional failure (42%) and pseudoarthrosis (28%). Surgeons reported that they would not change their surgical strategy in 52.3% of the cases. The leading cause for revision was hardware/instrumentation issues (24.4%). Learning points included rod-related choice (23.3%), level selection (19.8), PJF prophylactic strategy (15.1%), and sagittal alignment objective (11.6%). CONCLUSIONS: Surgeons saw opportunity in nearly half of the cases to improve outcomes by changing something in the original surgery. While 40% of the failures remained unexplained from the surgeons' perspective, this study highlights the capacity for adopting changes in adult spinal deformity surgery and illuminates the reasoning behind certain surgical decisions.

Evolutionary pressures sculpt population genetics, whereas immune adaptation fortifies humans against life-threatening organisms. How the evolution of selective genetic variation in adaptive immune receptors orchestrates the adaptation of human populations to contextual perturbations remains elusive. Here, we show that the G396R coding variant within the human immunoglobulin G1 (IgG1) heavy chain presents a concentrated prevalence in Southeast Asian populations. We uncovered a 190-kb genomic linkage disequilibrium block peaked in close proximity to this variant, suggestive of potential Darwinian selection. This variant confers heightened immune resilience against various pathogens and viper toxins in mice. Mechanistic studies involving severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection and vaccinated individuals reveal that this variant enhances pathogen-specific IgG1+ memory B cell activation and antibody production. This G396R variant may have arisen on a Neanderthal haplotype background. These findings underscore the importance of an IGHG1 variant in reinforcing IgG1 antibody responses against life-threatening organisms, unraveling the intricate interplay between human evolution and immune adaptation.

Lithium and mood stabilizers are considered effective augmentation agents of antidepressants for treatment-resistant depression. Thus, this study aimed to estimate the network structure of depression symptom criteria among unipolar depression patients with mood stabilizers, using data from the Research on Asian Psychotropic Prescription Patterns for mood stabilizers (REAP-MS). We estimated a network of the 9 depression symptom criteria among 411 unipolar depression patients in Asia. Each of the depression symptom criteria was considered to be a dichotomous categorical variable. Suicidality (suicidal ideation or attempt) was the most centrally situated within the network of depression symptoms, followed by depressed mood, loss of energy, anhedonia and weight loss or gain. Contrastingly, concentration problem was the least interconnected. The depression symptom criteria were organized into 4 clusters by the community detection method. The findings suggest that suicidality may be one of the significant therapeutic target symptoms in unipolar depression patients with mood stabilizers.

OBJECTIVE: Correction of mild flexible cervical deformity (CD) via the posterior approach has been described with and without the use of posterior osteotomies (POs), despite a lack of clarity regarding their necessity or risks. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the use of POs when correcting mild flexible CD leads to improved clinical or radiographic outcomes, as well as defining the relative risks in utilizing them. METHODS: A prospective multicenter registry of operative CD patients was analyzed. Inclusion criteria were cervical kyphosis > 10°, cervical scoliosis > 10°, cervical sagittal vertical axis (cSVA) > 4 cm, or chin-brow vertical angle > 25°. Mild deformity was defined by a cSVA of 3-5 cm and/or kyphosis < 15°. Flexibility was defined by a C2-7 angular change > 5° on preoperative flexion/extension radiographs. Patients who received a posterior column osteotomy (PCO) (Ames grades 1 and 2) were compared with patients who did not undergo a PCO (noPCO) as well as those who underwent a three-column osteotomy (3CO) (Ames grades 3-6). RESULTS: Ninety-five patients (33 PCO, 49 noPCO, 13 3CO) met the inclusion criteria. Both the number of levels fused (9.2 vs 7.7, p = 0.001) and the estimated blood loss (EBL) (1027 vs 486 mL, p = 0.012) were higher in the PCO cohort. Patients in the noPCO group were more likely to have a cervical apex of kyphosis (71.1%, p = 0.046), while those undergoing 3COs were more likely to have a thoracic apex (58.3%, p = 0.005). Preoperative cSVA (PCO vs noPCO: 45.4 vs 37.9 cm, p = 0.084), T1 slope (32.5° vs 29.6°, p = 0.376), C2-7 lordosis (-8.9° vs -9.2°, p = 0.942), and modified Japanese Orthopaedic Association (mJOA) score (13.4 vs 13.5, p = 0.854) were similar; however, both Neck Disability Index (NDI) (55.6 vs 42, p = 0.002) and numeric rating scale (NRS) neck (7.2 vs 5.8, p = 0.028) scores were higher in the PCO group before surgery. When adjusting for the use of an anterior approach, there was no significant difference in 1-year postoperative cSVA (35.7 and 35.6 cm, respectively; p = 0.969), C2-7 lordosis (13.7° and 10.1°, respectively; p = 0.393), and patient-reported outcome measures (NRS, NDI, and mJOA) between the PCO and noPCO groups. Two-year radiographic outcomes were largely similar, except for C2 slope, which was higher in the PCO group (29.1° vs 18°, p = 0.026). The overall complication rates progressively increased with more complex osteotomy use (noPCO 68.8% vs PCO 71.9% vs 3CO 75%) but did not reach significance (p = 0.063). CONCLUSIONS: The use of POs for mild flexible adult CD may not be necessary to achieve desirable radiographic correction. They are associated with greater EBL and fusion burden. Further studies are needed to fully delineate the risks of adverse events for various types of osteotomies.

Metformin is the most commonly prescribed medication for treating type 2 diabetes (T2D). It is known that metformin can alter the gut microbiome, which influences the effectiveness of metformin treatment. We posited that if the gut microbiome, a reservoir of the resistome, is altered, then the resistome should change as well. To test this hypothesis, we reanalyzed microbiome data generated by Wu et al. (Nat Med 23(7):850-858, 2017), identifying antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and bacterial species. Through read-based analysis, we observed that the abundance of ARGs indeed changed in many samples treated with metformin. Moreover, the altered pattern was sufficiently heterogeneous across individual samples to allow subcategorization. We also found a strong correlation between the abundance of multidrug-resistant ARGs (MDR-ARGs) and the presence of E. coli. The contig-based analysis led to the same conclusion: an increase in MDR-ARGs due to metformin was associated with an increase in E. coli. In relation to this, we were able to confirm that the majority of MDR-ARGs are likely to originate from E. coli. These results suggest that metformin may have the potential side effect of increasing E. coli carrying ARGs, particularly MDR-ARGs, which could be a concern in T2D therapy that relies on metformin.

BACKGROUND: Clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP) is associated with cardiovascular diseases and other disorders, possibly via inflammation. Recent research suggests a connection of CHIP with neurodegenerative disorders. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the association between multiple system atrophy (MSA) and CHIP. METHODS: We included 100 patients with MSA and 4457 controls. Targeted sequencing of peripheral blood DNA samples was performed, focusing on a panel of 25 genes commonly. LINKED TO CHIP: The prevalence of CHIP in patients with MSA was assessed against controls at variant allele frequency (VAF) thresholds of 1.5 % and 2.0 %. RESULTS: DNMT3A mutation rates were significantly higher in patients with MSA, with a VAF of 1.5 %, which remained significant after adjusting for age and sex (adjusted odds ratio, 1.848; 95 % CI, 1.024-3.335; p = 0.0416). CONCLUSION: Our results suggest an association between DNMT3A mutations and MSA.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate whether a 2-week period of daily isoagglutinin titer testing after ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation (ABOi-KT) is sufficient to ensure successful engraftment and to advocate for an extension of the monitoring duration in specific situations. METHODS: We reviewed patients from January 2022 to December 2023 at Asan Medical Center who underwent therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) due to elevated ABO antibody titers and suspected acute antibody-mediated rejection (AMR) after ABOi-KT. Data collected included pre- and posttransplantation laboratory results, clinical and procedural information, imaging studies, and needle biopsy results of the renal graft. RESULTS: We encountered 3 cases of acute AMR 2 weeks after transplantation. All cases exhibited simultaneous increases in anti-ABO antibody isoagglutinin titers, creatinine, and C-reactive protein levels. Clinical signs, including fever, suggested possible infection, and renal graft biopsy, confirmed AMR in all cases. Two cases underwent graftectomy, while the third recovered renal function after conservative treatment, including TPE. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that a 2-week monitoring period for isoagglutinin titers after ABOi-KT may not be sufficient to detect late AMR. Extending the monitoring duration and considering lifelong fresh-frozen plasma transfusion with graft-compatible blood types, along with periodic isoagglutinin titer testing in cases of suspected AMR, may improve long-term graft outcomes.

This study advances the automation of Parkinson's disease (PD) diagnosis by analyzing speech characteristics, leveraging a comprehensive approach that integrates a voting-based machine learning model. Given the growing prevalence of PD, especially among the elderly population, continuous and efficient diagnosis is of paramount importance. Conventional monitoring methods suffer from limitations related to time, cost, and accessibility, underscoring the need for the development of automated diagnostic tools. In this paper, we present a robust model for classifying speech patterns in Korean PD patients, addressing a significant research gap. Our model employs straightforward preprocessing techniques and a voting-based machine learning approach, demonstrating superior performance, particularly when training data is limited. Furthermore, we emphasize the effectiveness of the eGeMAPSv2 feature set in PD analysis and introduce new features that substantially enhance classification accuracy. The proposed model, achieving an accuracy of 84.73 % and an area under the ROC (AUC) score of 92.18 % on a dataset comprising 100 Korean PD patients and 100 healthy controls, offers a practical solution for automated diagnosis applications, such as smartphone apps. Future research endeavors will concentrate on enhancing the model's performance and delving deeper into the relationship between high-importance features and PD.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To evaluate the variability in intraoperative fluid management during adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgery, and analyze the association with complications, intensive care unit (ICU) requirement, and length of hospital stay (LOS). METHODS: Multicenter comparative cohort study. Patients ≥ 18 years old and with ASD were included. Intraoperative intravenous (IV) fluid data were collected including: crystalloids, colloids, crystalloid/colloid ratio (C/C), total IV fluid (tIVF, ml), normalized total IV fluid (nIVF, ml/kg/h), input/output ratio (IOR), input-output difference (IOD), and normalized input-output difference (nIOD, ml/kg/h). Data from different centers were compared for variability analysis, and fluid parameters were analyzed for possible associations with the outcomes. RESULTS: Seven hundred ninety-eight patients with a median age of 65.2 were included. Among different surgical centers, tIVF, nIVF, and C/C showed significant variation (p < 0.001 for each) with differences of 4.8-fold, 3.7-fold, and 4.9-fold, respectively. Two hundred ninety-two (36.6%) patients experienced at least one in-hospital complication, and ninety-two (11.5%) were IV fluid related. Univariate analysis showed significant relations for: LOS and tIVF (ρ = 0.221, p < 0.001), IOD (ρ = 0.115, p = 0.001) and IOR (ρ = -0.138, p < 0.001); IV fluid-related complications and tIVF (p = 0.049); ICU stay and tIVF, nIVF, IOD and nIOD (p < 0.001 each); extended ICU stay and tIVF (p < 0.001), nIVF (p = 0.010) and IOD (p < 0.001). Multivariate analysis controlling for confounders showed significant relations for: LOS and tIVF (p < 0.001) and nIVF (p = 0.003); ICU stay and IOR (p = 0.002), extended ICU stay and tIVF (p = 0.004). CONCLUSION: Significant variability and lack of standardization in intraoperative IV fluid management exists between different surgical centers. Excessive fluid administration was found to be correlated with negative outcomes. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: III.

High-performance flexible Sn-doped In2O3 (indium tin oxide, ITO) electrodes were fabricated using a multicoating process on colorless polyimide (CPI) substrates for flexible perovskite solar cells (FPSCs). The effects of different coating sequences on the electrical, optical, and mechanical properties of the flexible ITO electrodes were thoroughly investigated after preparing them with direct-current magnetron sputtering (DMS) and arc plasma ion plating (APIP). Although both the sputtered ITO (SITO)/arc ion-plated ITO (AITO) film and the AITO/SITO film showed similarly low sheet resistance (18.69-25.29 Ω/sq) and high optical transmittance (94.96-96.85%), the coating sequence significantly affected the mechanical flexibility of the multicoated ITO films. The 120 nm-thick SITO/AITO electrode exhibited small outer and inner critical bending radii (3 mm and 3 mm, respectively) compared to the AITO/SITO electrode (4 and 5 mm, respectively). Owing to better adhesion of the arc-ion-plated ITO bottom layer and the amorphous structure of the top SITO layer, the SITO/AITO electrode exhibited excellent mechanical flexibility and durability. In addition, an FPSC using the SITO/AITO electrode achieved a higher power conversion efficiency (15.09%) than that with the AITO/SITO electrode (13.22%). This improvement was attributed to its high transmittance, low sheet resistance, smooth surface morphology, and enhanced hole collection efficiency. These findings highlight the efficacy of the combined DMS and APIP multicoating process for fabricating high-quality flexible ITO electrodes for high-performance FPSCs.

We integrated transparent antireflective coatings and transparent electrodes onto flexible colorless polyimide (CPI) substrates to fabricate high-performance flexible perovskite solar cells. Multifunctional PPFC/CPI/IGTO substrates were fabricated by sputtering the optimal plasma-polymerized fluorocarbon (PPFC) antireflective coating and InGaTiO (IGTO) electrode films on both sides of the CPI substrate. By applying PPFC with a low refractive index (1.38) as an antireflective coating, the transparency of the PPFC/CPI/IGTO substrate increased by an additional 1.2%. In addition, owing to the amorphous characteristics of the PPFC and IGTO layers, the PPFC/CPI/IGTO substrate showed constant sheet resistance and transmittance change even after 10,000 cycles during the bending tests. The flexible perovskite solar cells, fabricated on the PPFC/CPI/IGTO substrate, exhibited an increase in current density of 1.48 mA/cm2 after the deposition of the PPFC antireflective coating. These results confirmed that the PPFC/CPI/IGTO substrate was durable against high-temperature treatment, flexible, and exhibited excellent electrical characteristics. This enhanced the efficiency and durability of the flexible perovskite solar cells. Moreover, the hydrophobic PPFC layer allowed the self-cleaning of inflexible perovskite solar cells. Given these attributes, the PPFC/CPI/IGTO structure has been recognized as a good choice for multifunctional substrates of flexible perovskite solar cells, presenting the potential for enhancing performance.


We have confirmed the durability of PPFC/CPI/IGTO substrates against high-temperature treatment, their flexibility, transparency, and their exceptional electrical properties, suggesting them as a prime selection for FPSCs.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Isolated rapid-eye movement behavior disorder (iRBD) is a prodromal synucleinopathy, but its conversion rate and subtypes can vary among different cohorts. We report the clinical characteristics and phenoconversion rate of the large single-center iRBD cohort in Korea and compared it to the Montreal cohort. METHODS: This prospective cohort study examined 238 patients with polysomnography confirmed iRBD from Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH) who completed at least one follow-up evaluation. We compared the baseline and phenoconversion data of the SNUH cohort to those of 242 iRBD patients in the Montreal cohort. RESULTS: In the SNUH cohort, age at RBD diagnosis was similar (66.4±7.8 vs 65.6±8.4, p=0.265), but the proportion of men was lower (63.0% vs. 74.0%, p=0.001), and the duration of follow-up was shorter than that in the Montreal cohort (3.7±2.0 vs. 4.8±3.6 years, p<0.001). During follow-up, 34 (11.8%) patients in the SNUH cohort converted to neurodegenerative disease: 18 (52.9%) to Parkinson's disease, 9 (26.5%) to dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and 7 (20.6%) to multiple system atrophy. The conversion rate in the SNUH cohort was 15% after 3 years, 22% after 5 years, and 32% after 7 years, which was significantly lower than that of the Montreal cohort (log-rank test, p=0.002). Among phenoconversion subtype, fewer subjects in the SNUH group than in the Montreal group converted to DLB (Gray's test p=0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Through a comparative analysis between the SNUH and Montreal cohorts, we identified a significant difference in phenoconversion rates, particularly for DLB patients. These findings underscore the importance of further research into the underlying factors, such as racial and geographical factors contributing to such disparities.

Brain swelling after cardiac arrest may affect brain ventricular volume. This study aimed to investigate the prognostic implications of ventricular volume on early thin-slice brain computed tomography (CT) after cardiac arrest. We measured the gray-to-white matter ratio (GWR) and the characteristics and volumes of the lateral, third, and fourth ventricles. The primary outcome was a poor 6-month neurological outcome. Of the 166 patients, 115 had a poor outcome. The fourth ventricle was significantly smaller in the poor outcome group (0.58 cm3 [95% CI, 0.43-0.80]) than in the good outcome group (0.74 cm3 [95% CI, 0.68-0.99], p < 0.001). Ventricular characteristics and other ventricular volumes did not differ between outcome groups. The area under the curve for the fourth ventricular volume was 0.68, comparable to 0.69 for GWR. Lower GWR (<1.09) and lower fourth ventricular volume (<0.41 cm3) predicted poor outcomes with 100% specificity and sensitivities of 8.7% (95% CI, 4.2-15.4) and 20.9% (95% CI, 13.9-29.4), respectively. Combining these measures improved the sensitivity to 25.2% (95% CI, 17.6-34.2). After adjusting for covariates, the fourth ventricular volume was independently associated with neurologic outcome. A marked decrease in fourth ventricular volume, with concomitant hypoattenuation on CT scans, more accurately predicted outcomes.
