RESUMEN

Black phosphorus (bP) based ink with a bulk bandgap of 0.33 eV (λ = 3.7 µm) has recently been shown to be promising for large-area, high performance mid-wave infrared (MWIR) optoelectronics. However, the development of multicolor bP inks expanding across the MWIR wavelength range has been challenging. Here a multicolor ink process based on bP with spectral emission tuned from 0.28 eV (λ = 4.4 µm) to 0.8 eV (λ = 1.5 µm) is demonstrated. Specifically, through the reduction of bP particle size distribution (i.e., lateral dimension and thickness), the optical bandgap systematically blueshifts, reaching up to 0.8 eV. Conversely, alloying bP with arsenic (bP1- xAsx) induces a redshift in the bandgap to 0.28 eV. The ink processed films are passivated with an infrared-transparent epoxy for stable infrared emission in ambient air. Utilizing these multicolor bP-based inks as an infrared light source, a gas sensing system is demonstrated that selectively detects gases, such as CO2 and CH4 whose absorption band varies around 4.3 and 3.3 µm, respectively. The presented ink formulation sets the stage for the advancement of multiplex MWIR optoelectronics, including spectrometers and spectral imaging using a low-cost material processing platform.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To determine factors influencing postoperative enophthalmos after reconstruction of orbital wall fracture. METHOD: Data of consecutive patients who were diagnosed with unilateral medial or inferior orbital wall fracture from March 2013 to February 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. Forty-three patients were included in this study (24 with medial orbital wall fracture and 19 with inferior orbital wall fracture). Their medical records including Hertel exophthalmometry, preoperative computed tomography (CT) scan, and postoperative CT scan were reviewed. The degree of enophthalmos developed was calculated by measuring exophthalmos before surgery and at 6 months after surgery. Patients were classified into 2 groups depending on whether reduction was good after surgery or not. Data (eg, age, gender, onset, fracture size, and so on) were then compared between these 2 groups. RESULTS: A total of 43 patients were included in the study. Their mean age was 40.1 years. There were 34 (79.1%) males. The mean onset from trauma to surgery was 8.1 days. Insufficient soft tissue reduction was found in 9 patients through postoperative CT scan. Preoperative mean enophthalmos was - 1.70 mm. Postoperative mean enophthalmos was -0.45 mm after 6 months. The mean fracture size was 213.74 mm2. There was no statistically significant difference in enophthalmos at 6 months after surgery regardless whether the reduction was good or not. Enophthalmos at 6 months after surgery was associated with preoperative fracture size and onset. CONCLUSIONS: Postoperative enophthalmos development might be associated with preoperative fracture size and onset. Delayed operation in case of large orbital wall fracture might lead to undesired result. Thus, surgeons should keep that in mind.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Thread embedding acupuncture (TEA) has recently been used as a conservative treatment method for non-specific chronic neck pain (CNP). The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of TEA compared to physical therapy (PT) for treating patients with CNP. METHODS: A total of 128 patients diagnosed with CNP were randomly assigned to a TEA group and a PT group at a 1:1 ratio. The TEA group received four sessions of TEA, while the PT group received eight sessions of PT over 4 weeks. Outcomes were assessed using Neck Pain and Disability Scale (NPDS), clinically important difference (CID), cervical spinal angle, Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Patient Global Impression of Change (PGIC), and EuroQol Five-Dimension (EQ-5D) at baseline and 5, 9, and 13 weeks. RESULTS: The TEA group showed significant improvement in NPDS compared to the PT group at 5, 9, and 13 weeks. Proportions of patients with decreased NPDS scores of more than 11.5 points (minimal CID) were significantly higher in the TEA group at 5, 9, and 13 weeks. There were significant differences between the two groups at 5, 9, and 13 weeks for BDI-II, and at 5 and 9 weeks for BAI. For EQ-5D, the TEA group showed significant improvement at 5, 9, and 13 weeks. There was no significant difference in cervical spinal angle between the two groups. For PGIC, better improvement was observed at 9 and 13 weeks in the TEA group. Adverse events associated with interventions were mostly temporary and mild. CONCLUSION: For patients with CNP, TEA treatment was found to be more effective than PT treatment for improving their pain and dysfunction, quality of life, and psychological distress. Despite some post-treatment discomfort, TEA treatment can be considered as a useful treatment method for patients with CNP. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This trial has been registered 5 April 2019 in Clinical Research Information Service of South Korea (CRIS- KCT0003720).

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Anterior chamber flare reaction refers to the light reflection from the protein in aqueous humor. We report a case of very severe flare reaction observed in human leukocyte antigen (HLA)- B27 associated acute anterior uveitis (AAU). CASE PRESENTATION: An age 43 male patient visited the uveitis clinic complaining of decreased visual acuity in the right eye which developed 1 week before. The detailed ophthalmic examination revealed very severe flare reaction in the anterior chamber with diffuse conjunctival hyperemia in the right eye. Pupil margin and iris details were barely observable. Oral prednisolone 20 mg daily with topical 1% prednisolone acetate (Pred Forte, Allergan, CA) every 2 h and 1% topical cyclopentolate (Cyclogyl, Alcon, TX) three times daily were immediately prescribed. The next day, the flare reaction of the right eye decreased significantly and inflammatory cells in the anterior chamber were visible. Detailed fundus examination revealed no inflammatory signs on the retina and ciliary body. Later, the blood test revealed positive HLA B27 and autoantibodies against lupus anticoagulant with mild elevation of C reactive protein. There were no signs for ankylosing spondylitis. Continued treatment and tapering of topical 1% prednisolone acetate for 4 weeks led to the complete resolution of the anterior uveitis. CONCLUSIONS: We experienced HLA-B27 AAU with the feature of a very severe flare reaction. Conventional uveitis treatment was successful to acquire the complete resolution of the inflammation.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: As the number of patients who suffer from non-specific chronic neck pain (CNP) is increasing in the Republic of Korea, conservative treatments for patients with CNP have been spotlighted. Although several studies on thread embedding acupuncture (TEA) treatment have been published for the treatment of such patients, no randomized controlled trial has been reported that investigates the effectiveness and safety of the TEA treatment compared with other conservative treatments for the treatment of patients with CNP. Therefore, the purpose of this trial is to compare the effectiveness and safety of TEA to those of physical therapy (PT) for the treatment of patients with CNP. METHODS/DESIGN: This study is planned as a parallel design, randomized, controlled, assessor-blinded, clinical study. One hundred twenty-eight patients diagnosed with CNP will be randomly assigned to either the TEA group or the PT group in a 1:1 ratio. Participants in the TEA group will receive 4 sessions of TEA treatment, while those in the PT group will receive 8 sessions of PT treatment over 4 weeks. An assessment of effectiveness based on the outcomes of the Neck Pain and Disability Scale (NPDS), cervical spinal angle, Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Patient Global Impression of Change (PGIC), EuroQol-Five Dimension 3 level version (EQ-5D-3L), and Pressure Pain Threshold (PPT) will be conducted at baseline, and at 5, 9, and 13 weeks. The primary outcome is the mean change in the NPDS at 9 weeks. Adverse events (AEs) will be recorded at every visit. DISCUSSION: The results of this study will be expected to provide useful information for the effectiveness and safety of TEA treatment compared to PT treatment for patients with CNP. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Clinical Research Information Service of Republic of Korea (CRIS- KCT0003720), April 5, 2019.

RESUMEN

Mammalian P2X receptors (P2XRs), a family of seven ionotropic purinergic receptors, function as ion channels modulating diverse cellular processes such as secretion, apoptosis and proliferation in response to extracellular ATP. Previously, it was shown that upon ATP stimulus, the P2X7 receptor (a member of P2XR family) triggers plasma membrane (PM) blebbing in HEK293 cells. In this study, we demonstrate that this phenomenon extends to another member of the P2XR family-P2X2 receptor (P2X2R). Similar to P2X7 receptor, P2X2R blebbing is dependent on Ca(2+)-calmodulin and ROCK-I. To elucidate the spatiotemporal relationship between Ca(2+) signaling and blebbing, protein biosensors and switches were used to image and generate Ca(2+) signals, respectively, while observing PM blebbing in cells. Blebbing cannot be initiated by Ca(2+) influx from the endoplasmic reticulum or by Ca(2+) transport across the PM by other Ca(2+) channels. To trigger blebbing, it is necessary for Ca(2+) to enter specifically through the P2X2R. Lastly, a local Ca(2+) signal near a fragment that encodes the intracellular P2X2R C-terminus tail is sufficient to trigger blebbing.

RESUMEN

A scattering layer is utilized by mixing nanoporous spheres and nanoparticles in ZnO-based dye-sensitized solar cells. Hundred-nanometer-sized ZnO spheres consisting of approximately 35-nm-sized nanoparticles provide not only effective light scattering but also a large surface area. Furthermore, ZnO nanoparticles are added to the scattering layer to facilitate charge transport and increase the surface area as filling up large voids. The mixed scattering layer of nanoparticles and nanoporous spheres on top of the nanoparticle-based electrode (bilayer geometry) improves solar cell efficiency by enhancing both the short-circuit current (J sc) and fill factor (FF), compared to the layer consisting of only nanoparticles or nanoporous spheres.

RESUMEN

The photoluminescence behavior of CdS quantum dots in initial growth stage was studied in connection with an annealing process. Compared to the as-synthesized CdS quantum dots (quantum efficiency ≅ 1%), the heat-treated sample showed enhanced luminescence properties (quantum efficiency ≅ 29%) with a narrow band-edge emission. The simple annealing process diminished the accumulated defect states within the nanoparticles and thereby reduced the nonradiative recombination, which was confirmed by diffraction, absorption, and time-resolved photoluminescence. Consequently, the highly luminescent and defect-free nanoparticles were obtained by a facile and straightforward process.
