PURPOSE: Traumatic peripheral nerve injury (PNI), which occurs in up to 3% of trauma patients, is a devastating condition that often leads to permanent disability. However, knowledge of traumatic PNI is limited. We describe epidemiology and clinical characteristics of traumatic PNI in Korea and identify the predictors of traumatic complete PNI. METHODS: A list of enlisted soldier patients who were discharged from military service due to PNI over a 10-year period (2012-2021) was obtained, and their medical records were reviewed. Patients were classified according to the causative events (traumatic vs. nontraumatic) and injury severity (complete vs. incomplete). Of traumatic PNIs, we compared the clinical variables between the incomplete and complete PNI groups and identified predictors of complete PNI. RESULTS: Of the 119 young male patients who were discharged from military service due to PNI, 85 (71.4%) were injured by a traumatic event; among them, 22 (25.9%) were assessed as having a complete injury. The most common PNI mechanism (n=49, 57.6%), was adjacent fractures or dislocations. Several injury-related characteristics were significantly associated with complete PNI: laceration or gunshot wound, PNI involving the median nerve, PNI involving multiple individual nerves (multiple PNI), and concomitant muscular or vascular injuries. After adjusting for other possible predictors, multiple PNI was identified as a significant predictor of a complete PNI (odds ratio, 3.583; P=0.017). CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we analyzed the characteristics of enlisted Korean soldiers discharged due to traumatic PNI and found that the most common injury mechanism was adjacent fracture or dislocation (57.6%). Patients with multiple PNI had a significantly increased risk of complete injury. The results of this study contribute to a better understanding of traumatic PNI, which directly leads to a decline in functioning in patients with trauma.

Acrylic resins are widely used as the main components in removable orthodontic appliances. However, poor oral hygiene and maintenance of orthodontic appliances provide a suitable environment for the growth of pathogenic microorganisms. In this study, strontium-modified phosphate-based glass (Sr-PBG) was added to orthodontic acrylic resin at 0% (control), 3.75%, 7.5%, and 15% by weight to evaluate the surface and physicochemical properties of the novel material and its in vitro antifungal effect against Candida albicans (C. albicans). Surface microhardness and contact angle did not vary between the control and 3.75% Sr-PBG groups (p > 0.05), and the flexural strength was lower in the experimental groups than in the control group (p < 0.05), but no difference was found with Sr-PBG content (p > 0.05). All experimental groups showed an antifungal effect at 24 and 48 h compared to that in the control group (p < 0.05). This study demonstrated that 3.75% Sr-PBG exhibits antifungal effects against C. albicans along with suitable physicochemical properties, which may help to minimize the risk of adverse effects associated with harmful microbial living on removable orthodontic appliances and promote the use of various materials.

Objective: Given the long-term and severe distress experienced during breast cancer treatment, detecting depression among breast cancer patients is clinically crucial. This study aimed to explore a machine-learning model using self-report questionnaires to screen for depression in patients with breast cancer. Methods: A total of 327 patients who visited the breast cancer clinic were included in this study. Depressive symptoms were measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). The depression was evaluated according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5th edition. The prediction model's performance based on supervised machine learning was conducted using MATLAB2022. Results: The BDI showed an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.785 when using the logistic regression (LR) classifier. The HADS and PHQ-9 showed an AUC of 0.784 and 0.756 when using the linear discriminant analysis, respectively. The combinations of BDI and HADS showed an AUC of 0.812 when using the LR. The combinations of PHQ-9, BDI, and HADS showed an AUC of 0.807 when using LR. Conclusion: The combination model with BDI and HADS in breast cancer patients might be better than the method using a single scale. In future studies, it is necessary to explore strategies that can improve the performance of the model by integrating the method using questionnaires and other methods.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe the clinical presentation and features in electrodiagnostic and imaging investigations of young South Korean males diagnosed with Hirayama disease (HD). METHODS: We reviewed the electronic medical records of South Korean enlisted soldiers who were diagnosed with HD and discharged from military service during 2011-2021. We investigated the clinical characteristics and results of electrodiagnostic and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) investigations. We analyzed laterality and identified the involved muscles using needle electromyography (EMG). Loss of lordosis, localized cervical cord atrophy, loss of attachment between the posterior dura and subjacent lamina, asymmetric flattening of the cord, crescent-shaped mass in the posterior epidural space, and noncompressive intramedullary T2-weighted high signal intensity were investigated using neutral- or flexion-position MRI. RESULTS: Forty-two male patients aged 20.2±0.8 years (mean±standard deviation) were identified. All patients complained of hand weakness, and 10 complained of hand tremor (23.8%). Four patients (9.5%) had symptoms in both upper limbs, and five (11.9%) had sensory disturbances. Needle EMG revealed that muscles in the C7-T1 myotome were commonly involved, and C5-C6 involvement of the deltoid (10.5%) and biceps brachii (12.5%) was also observed. In cervical MRI, localized cord atrophy (90.0%) was the most characteristic finding, and cord atrophy was most severe at the C5-C6 level (58.3%). CONCLUSIONS: This is the first description of a large number of patients with HD in South Korea. The clinical presentation and features found in electrodiagnostic and imaging investigations will improve the understanding of HD in the young South Korean male population.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: All young males in South Korea must undergo a physical examination for their participation in military service. We aimed to determine the prevalence rate (PR) of various neuromuscular diseases in young South Korean males using the data of exempted patients and soldiers. METHODS: The number of males exempted based on specific items of physical examination corresponding to neuromuscular disease during 2011-2020 were obtained from the records of the Military Manpower Administration. The list of enlisted soldier patients who were discharged from military service due to neuromuscular diseases during 2011-2020 was obtained from the Armed Forces Medical Command, and their medical records were reviewed. RESULTS: The PR of neuromuscular diseases was calculated among 948 identified males: 713 exempted males and 235 soldiers. The PRs of overall hereditary neuropathies, Hirayama disease (HD), myasthenia gravis (MG), and inherited muscle diseases in South Korean males in their early 20s were 8.34 (95% confidence interval [CI], 7.39-9.30), 5.54 (95% CI, 4.76-6.32), 2.97 (95% CI, 2.40-3.55), and 10.38 (95% CI, 9.31-11.46) per 100,000 persons, respectively. Among the enlisted soldiers, hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsy was the most common neuromuscular disease, with a prevalence among the enlisted soldiers of 3.11 (95% CI, 2.42-3.80) per 100,000 persons. Myotonic dystrophy was the most prevalent myopathy, followed by facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy. CONCLUSIONS: The 10-year PRs of hereditary polyneuropathies, HD, MG, and inherited muscle diseases in young South Korean males have been reported. These data could be valuable to understanding each neuromuscular disease in the young male population of South Korea.

OBJECTIVE: Various and accurate psychiatric assessments in patients with breast cancer who frequently suffer from psychological problems due to long-term survivors are warranted. This systematic review aimed to investigate the current evidence on psychometric properties of psychiatric assessment for evaluating psychological problems in breast cancer patients. METHODS: This systematic review progressed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guideline. Four electronic databases such as Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature were searched. This study protocol was registered on Open Science Framework. RESULTS: Of the 2,040 articles, 21 papers were finally included. Among them, only five studies showed the performance of psychiatric assessment tools. Among 13 assessment tools used in the selected articles, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Distress Thermometer (DT), or Mini-Mental Adjustment to Cancer Scale was frequently used for the evaluation of psychological problems. The DT and Psychosocial Distress Questionnaire-Breast Cancer showed acceptable performances for the prediction of depression and anxiety assessed by the HADS. CONCLUSION: This systematic review found psychiatric assessment tools with acceptable reliability and validity for breast cancer patients. However, comparative studies on reliability and validity of various scales are required to provide useful information for the selection of appropriate assessment tools based on the clinical settings and treatment stages of breast cancer. Joint research among the fields of psychiatry and breast surgery is needed for research to establish the convergent, concurrent, and predictive validity of psychiatric assessment tools in breast cancer patients.

Based on the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group (ACOSOG)-Z0011, a useful nomogram has been constructed to identify patients who do not require intraoperative frozen sections to evaluate sentinel lymph nodes in the previous study. This study investigated the developed nomogram by ultrasonography (US) and positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) as a modality. In the training set, 89/1030 (8.6%) patients had three or more positive nodes. Larger tumor size, higher grade ultrasonographic ALN classification, and findings suspicious of positive ALN on PET/CT were associated in multivariate analysis. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of the nomogram were 0.856 [95% CI 0.815-0.897] in the training set. The AUC in the validation set was 0.866 [95% CI 0.799-0.934]. Application of the nomogram to 1067 patients who met the inclusion criteria of ACOSOG-Z0011 showed that 90 (8.4%) patients had scores above the cut-off and a false-negative result was 37 (3.8%) patients. And the specificity was 93.8%, and the negative predictive value was 96.4%. The upgraded nomogram improved the predictive accuracy, using only US and PET/CT. This nomogram is useful for identifying patients who do not require intraoperative analysis of sentinel lymph nodes and considering candidates for identifying neoadjuvant chemotherapy. The patients consisted of clinical T1-2 and node-negative invasive breast cancer. The training and validation set consisted of 1030 and 781 patients, respectively. A nomogram was constructed by analyzing factors related to three or more axillary lymph node metastases. The patients who matched the ACOSOG-Z0011 criteria were selected and applied to the new nomogram.

Activation of TRP channels expressed in urinary bladder afferent nerves and urothelium releases neurotransmitters that influence bladder function. Experiments were undertaken to examine the mechanisms underlying effects of TRPA1 (allyl isothiocyanate, AITC), TRPV1 (capsaicin, CAPS), and TRPC (oleoyl-2-acetyl-sn-glycerol, OAG) agonists on guinea pig bladder activity. Effects of these agonists were compared with effects of nitro-oleic acid (OA-NO2), an electrophilic nitro-fatty acid, known to activate TRPV1, TRPA1 or TRPC channels in sensory neurons. AITC (100 µM) increased (231%) area of spontaneous bladder contractions (SBCs) an effect reduced by a TRPA1 antagonist (HC3-03001, HC3, 10 µM) and reversed to inhibition by indomethacin (INDO, 500 nM) a cyclooxygenase inhibitor. The post-INDO inhibitory effect of AITC was mimicked (39% depression) by calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP, 100 nM) and blocked by a CGRP antagonist (BIBN, 25 µM). CAPS (1 µM) suppressed SBCs by 30% in 81% of strips, an effect blocked by a TRPV1 antagonist (diarylpiperazine, 1 µM) or BIBN. SBCs were suppressed by OA-NO2 (30 µM, 21% in 77% of strips) or by OAG (50 µM, 30%) an effect blocked by BIBN. OA-NO2 effects were not altered by HC3 or diarylpiperazine. OA-NO2 also induced excitation in 23% of bladder strips. These observations raise the possibility that guinea pig bladder is innervated by at least two types of afferent nerves: [1] Type A express TRPA1 receptors that induce the release of prostaglandins and excite the detrusor, [2] Type B express TRPV1, TRPA1 and TRPC receptors and release CGRP that inhibits the detrusor.

The present study investigated the relationship between impulsivity, self-esteem, irrational gambling belief, and problem gambling and also explored whether the relationships between these constructs are different for males and females. Participants included 563 college students with 259 males (46.0%) and 304 females (54.0%) from Korea. Participants completed a survey. The results showed that 5.3% of students were problem gamblers, while 9.4% were moderate-risk gamblers. The relationships between impulsivity, self-esteem, irrational gambling belief, and problem gambling differed for males and females. For females, greater impulsivity and lower self-esteem predicted higher irrational gambling belief, while higher irrational gambling belief predicted more problem gambling. For males, greater impulsivity predicted higher irrational gambling belief, and higher irrational gambling belief predicted more problem gambling. This finding suggests that different prevention efforts are needed, which will require identifying the variables that affect problem gambling.

PURPOSE: We examined the incidence of emotional distress in women with newly diagnosed breast cancer to determine whether the degree of emotional distress affected their choice of breast-conserving surgery (BCS) or mastectomy and evaluated how the patient's preferred role in decision-making influenced her choice of surgical method. METHODS: This prospective study included 85 patients newly diagnosed with in situ or invasive breast cancer eligible for BCS. Their degree of depression/anxiety and attitude toward the decision-making process were measured using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and Control Preference Scale (CPS), respectively. After receiving information on both surgical methods, the patients indicated their preferred surgical method and completed the CPS at their initial and second visits before surgery. RESULTS: After the diagnosis of breast cancer, 75.3% of patients showed abnormal or borderline HADS scores for depression and 41.2% for anxiety. Patients with borderline or abnormal degrees of depression were more likely to have coexisting abnormal degrees of anxiety (p < 0.001). However, the presence of depression or anxiety was not associated with patients' surgical choices (p=0.394 and 0.530, respectively). Patients who preferred a more active role in the decision-making process were more likely to choose mastectomy over BCS, while those who were passive or collaborative chose BCS more frequently (p=0.001). CONCLUSION: Although many patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer experience depression and anxiety before surgery, these do not affect the choice of surgical method; however, their attitudes toward the decision-making process do.

BACKGROUND: In breast cancer surgery, electrocautery (EC) is commonly used with the basic method of knot tying, and there are few reports of using other devices such as ultrasonic dissection device (UDD). This study was designed to compare the case of using EC with the basic method of knot tying and the case of using UDD in breast cancer surgery. METHODS: From April 2019 to March 2020, 376 patients who underwent breast cancer surgery at Pusan National University Hospital were enrolled. We compared operation time, complications, and blood loss volume between surgery with and without UDD. RESULTS: We included 306 patients for the final analysis, 142 in the control group and 164 in the trial group. The operation time [minutes (min)] was significantly reduced in the trial group compared to the control group (111.2 vs. 95.5 min, P<0.001). In subgroup analysis, the operation time in the trial group was significantly reduced. There was no significant difference in intraoperative blood loss (P=0.999) and complications [seroma (P=0.965), hematoma (P=0.999), cellulitis (P=0.999)]. CONCLUSIONS: Our study showed that the use of a UDD for surgeons to select instruments for breast cancer surgery may be a good option for both patients and surgeons.

INTRODUCTION: Humeral shaft fractures can lead to radial nerve injury and may require surgery and rehabilitation. We determined the causative events of humeral fracture, including arm wrestling, in young Korean soldiers and examined whether humeral fracture is related to demographic characteristics and the presence of radial nerve palsy. METHODS: We reviewed 7.5 years (July 2012 to June 2019) of medical records covering patients who had experienced a humeral shaft fracture after entering military service and had received surgery for open reduction and internal fixation. Data were obtained on basic demographics, initial event provoking the fracture, presence of radial nerve palsy, initial and follow-up severity of the weakness, and any discharge from military service because of prolonged radial nerve palsy. RESULTS: Of 123 cases, arm wrestling was the leading cause (52.8%). A high energy injury, such as falling from a height (11.4%), and sports related slips (10.6%) were other causes. All humeral shaft fractures caused by forceful contraction were spiral, while 40% of the fractures caused by external force related events were of a transverse type. The percentage of left-sided fractures was significantly higher for fractures arising from an external force than in those caused by forceful contraction related events. Radial nerve palsy was found in 34 patients (27.6%), and 16 were discharged from the military because of prolonged radial nerve palsy 6 months after the fracture. The causative events and other factors did not affect the presence of radial nerve palsy. CONCLUSION: Arm wrestling was the leading cause of humeral fracture in young Korean soldiers but the chance of developing comorbid radial nerve palsy did not differ from that of other causes. These epidemiologic findings in this young active group may help in understanding the causes of humeral shaft fracture in soldiers and in the wider young population.

Chemotherapy is commonly used as a major therapeutic option for breast cancer treatment, but its efficacy is often diminished by disruption of patient's anti-tumor immunity. Chemotherapy-generated tumor cell debris could hijack accumulated tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), provoking tumor recurrence. Therefore, reprogramming TAMs to acquire an immunocompetent phenotype is a promising strategy to potentiate therapeutic efficacy. In this study, we analyzed the proportion of immune cells in the breast cancer patients who received chemotherapy. To validate our findings in vivo, we used a syngeneic murine breast cancer (4T1) model. Chemotherapy generates an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment in breast cancer. Here, we show that phagocytic engulfment of tumor cell debris by TAMs reduces chemotherapeutic efficacy in a 4T1 breast cancer model. Specifically, the engulfment of tumor cell debris by macrophages reduced M1-like polarization through heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) upregulation. Conversely, genetic or pharmacologic inhibition of HO-1 in TAMs restored the M1-like polarization. Our results demonstrate that tumor cell debris-induced HO-1 expression in macrophages regulates their polarization. Inhibition of HO-1 overexpression in TAMs may provoke a robust anti-tumor immune response, thereby potentiating the efficacy of chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Aromatase inhibitors (AIs) are the preferred endocrine treatment for postmenopausal hormonal receptor-positive breast cancer. However, there is controversy on the long-term cardiovascular and cerebrovascular safety of AIs over that of tamoxifen. METHODS: We analyzed the National Health Information Database (NHID) of 281,255 women over a 20-year-old diagnosed with breast cancer between 2009 and 2016. Cardiovascular events (CVEs) were defined as the development of the following, acute coronary syndrome (ACS), ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, defined by using insurance claim records. The model was constructed by Cox proportional hazard regression and this model was used to analyze the effects of AI and tamoxifen on CVE. RESULTS: We included 47,569 women for the final analysis. Patients were classified into 'No hormonal treatment (n = 18,807), 'Switch (n = 2097)', 'Tamoxifen (n = 7081)' and 'AI (n = 19,584)'. There were 2147 CVEs in 2032 patients (4.1%). Univariate analysis showed that women with tamoxifen had significantly lower risk for CVEs compared to no-treatment (hazard ratio (HR) 0.84, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.74-0.97) while AI showed no such effect (HR 0.93, 95% CI 0.84-1.02). After adjusting for other risk factors (hypertension, dyslipidemia, family history), the use of tamoxifen was associated with significant protective effect against ACS (HR 0.63, 95% CI 0.47-0.84). CONCLUSIONS: Our results, based on the NHID, supports the protective effect of tamoxifen against CVE in Korean breast cancer patients aged 55 and older that is not seen with AIs. Our results can guide the selection of adjuvant hormonal treatment agents for Korean breast cancer patients based on their risk of developing CVE.

The labeling of all ingredients contained in consumer products has been requested by consumers concerned regarding their safety. Consequently, regulatory agencies have set guidelines for industries on how to provide safety information regarding the ingredients in their products. However, discordant opinions were raised from stakeholders, resulting in the formation of a risk communication forum among industries, regulatory agencies, consumer groups, and academia. There are several methods that might be utilized to provide ingredient information to consumers: (1) listing all ingredients on the label of products, (2) providing major ingredients on the label of products, (3) presenting all ingredients on the websites of each manufacturer, and (4) listing major ingredients on the label of products and the remainder of ingredients (not on the label) on the websites. Each method might have its own advantages and disadvantages with respect to providing the information regarding the names of the ingredients used in consumer products to the consumers. A continuous risk communication forum might be an effective tool to facilitate an improved understanding of chemical information, toxicological science, regulatory guidelines, labeling methods, and consumers' concern. This study suggests that risk communication efforts may be helpful and a good opportunity for stakeholders to exchange opinions and reach a harmonious conclusion on labeling of consumer products ingredients.

Adult bone homeostasis requires a fine-tuned balance between the activity of osteoblasts and osteoclasts. This osteoblast-osteoclast coupling is therapeutically important because it limits the efficacy of most anabolic or anti-resorptive treatments for osteoporosis. Sirtuin6 (SIRT6), a histone deacetylase, was implicated recently as an important regulator in bone homeostasis, but its in vivo function in osteoblast lineage cells remains unclear, mainly due to a lack of in vivo experiments with osteoblast lineage-specific Sirt6 knockout mice. Here, we show that Sirt6 in mature osteoblasts and/or osteocytes inhibits osteoclastogenesis via a paracrine mechanism. We found that osteoblast/osteocyte-specific Sirt6 knockout mice show reduced bone mass due to increased osteoclast formation. Mechanistically, we attribute this increased osteoclastogenesis to decreased osteoprotegerin expression in Sirt6-null osteoblasts and osteocytes. This loss of Sirt6 in osteoblasts and osteocytes does not, however, alter bone formation parameters in vivo. It does accelerate osteogenic differentiation in ex vivo culture, indicating that the osteoblast/osteocyte-autonomous functions of SIRT6 have minor effects on the osteopenic phenotype. These results establish a critical role for SIRT6 in mature osteoblasts and osteocytes in adult bone homeostasis as a negative paracrine regulator of osteoclastogenesis.

PURPOSE: Accurate prediction of pathologic complete response (pCR) in breast cancer using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound (US)-guided biopsy may aid in selecting patients who forego surgery for breast cancer. We evaluated the accuracy of US-guided biopsy aided by MRI in predicting pCR in the breast after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). METHODS: After completion of NAC, 40 patients with near pCR (either tumor size ≤ 0.5 cm or lesion-to-background signal enhancement ratio (L-to-B SER) ≤ 1.6 on MRI) and no diffused residual microcalcifications were prospectively enrolled at a single institution. US-guided multiple core needle biopsy (CNB) or vacuum-assisted biopsy (VAB) of the tumor bed, followed by standard surgical excision, was performed. Matched biopsy and surgical specimens were compared to assess pCR. The negative predictive value (NPV), accuracy, and false-negative rate (FNR) were analyzed. RESULTS: pCR was confirmed in 27 (67.5%) surgical specimens. Preoperative biopsy had an NPV, accuracy, and FNR of 87.1%, 90.0%, and 30.8%, respectively. NPV for hormone receptor-negative and hormone receptor-positive tumors were 83.3% and 100%, respectively. Obtaining at least 5 biopsy cores based on tumor size ≤ 0.5 cm and an L-to-B SER of ≤ 1.6 on MRI (27 patients) resulted in 100% NPV and accuracy. No differences in accuracy were noted between CNB and VAB (90% vs. 90%). CONCLUSIONS: Investigation using stringent MRI criteria and ultrasound-guided biopsy could accurately predict patients with pCR after NAC. A larger prospective clinical trial evaluating the clinical safety of breast surgery omission after NAC in selected patients will be conducted based on these findings.

Sparganosis is a parasitic infestation caused by sparganum, a plerocercoid tapeworm larva of the genus Spirometra. Since the first case of human sparganosis reported in 1908, sparganosis has been a global disease, and is common in China, Japan, and Southeast Asian countries. Consumption of raw snakes, frogs, fish, or drinking contaminated beverages are sources of human infections. Human sparganosis usually manifests in subcutaneous fat in areas such as the abdomen, genitourinary tract, and limbs. Breast sparganosis cases are rare, representing less than 2% of total cases of human infections. Complete surgical extraction of the sparganum is the treatment of choice. Because of the rarity of the disease, clinical suspicion is vital to reach the diagnosis of breast sparganosis. Here we report 2 rare cases of breast sparganosis presenting with a painless breast lump, both treated with surgical excision and sparganum extraction.

Safety issues regarding consumer products contaminated with trace amounts of chemicals are of great concern to consumers, with the degree of concern occasionally escalating to the psychological syndrome, chemophobia (i.e., the fear of chemicals). Hazardous substances frequently implicated in safety concerns include heavy metals (arsenic, mercury, cadmium, and lead), volatile organic compounds (VOC) such as benzene and o-toluidine, pesticides, carcinogens, radioactive substances, and endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDC) such as bisphenol A and phthalates. To improve communication of risk to society, members of academia, government, consumer organizations, and industry participated in this workshop to discuss and exchange perspectives on trace chemical safety. From the perspective of academia, integrated risk assessments need to be implemented to encompass various exposure sources and routes. The identification and investigation of new exposure-related biomarkers are also recommended to verify direct causal relationships between specific chemical exposure and effects on human health. As for regulation, governments need to establish and maintain acceptable limits for trace chemicals in products. In addition, harmonized efforts need to be undertaken among government agencies to share regulatory limits and effectively control trace chemicals in consumer products. Manufacturers need to faithfully abide by Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) guidelines, monitor sources of contamination, and minimize these for consumer safety. To effectively resolve safety issues arising from trace chemicals exposure, collaborative efforts are needed involving academia, government, consumer organizations, and industry. Further, scientific evidence-based risk assessment is a critical approach to effectively manage trace chemical safety issues.
