RESUMEN

Hypofractionated radiotherapy (RT) has become a trend in the modern era, as advances in RT techniques, including intensity-modulated RT and image-guided RT, enable the precise and safe delivery of high-dose radiation. Hypofractionated RT offers convenience and can reduce the financial burden on patients by decreasing the number of fractions. Furthermore, hypofractionated RT is potentially more beneficial for tumors with a low α/ß ratio compared with conventional fractionation RT. Therefore, hypofractionated RT has been investigated for various primary cancers and has gained status as a standard treatment recommended in the guidelines. In genitourinary (GU) cancer, especially prostate cancer, the efficacy, and safety of various hypofractionated dose schemes have been evaluated in numerous prospective clinical studies, establishing the standard hypofractionated RT regimen. Hypofractionated RT has also been explored for gynecological (GY) cancer, yielding relevant evidence in recent years. In this review, we aimed to summarize the representative evidence and current trends in clinical studies on hypofractionated RT for GU and GY cancers addressing several key questions. In addition, the objective is to offer suggestions for the available dose regimens for hypofractionated RT by reviewing protocols from previous clinical studies.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy and toxicities of skin-directed radiotherapy (RT) in primary cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 57 CTCL lesions treated with skin-directed RT between January 2000 and December 2022. Lesions were categorized into three distinct groups: early-stage disease treated with local RT, advanced-stage disease treated with local RT, and advanced-stage disease treated with total skin electron beam therapy (TSEBT). Treatment outcomes, including response rates, recurrence patterns, and local progression probability, were assessed for each group. RESULTS: Mycosis fungoides (MF) constituted 90.9% of the advanced-stage pathologies, while CD4+ primary cutaneous small/medium T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder was common in the early stage lesions (55%). Median RT doses were 30.6 Gy, 27 Gy, and 32 Gy for the local RT with early stage, the local RT with advanced stage, and TSEBT with advanced stage, respectively. The complete response rates were high across the groups: 95.5%, 70.8%, and 90.9%, respectively. Seven local recurrences (29.2%) occurred in the local RT group with advanced stage, while seven patients (63.6%) in the TSEBT group experienced local failure. All recurrences were observed in lesions and patients with MF. Acute toxicities were mainly grade 1 or 2, with no grade 3 or higher events. No significant association between RT dose and local progression rates in MF lesions was found. CONCLUSION: Skin-directed RT in CTCL is effective for local control and well-tolerated with less toxicity.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to conduct a pre-conception care program for women of childbearing age with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in Korea and verify its effects on self-efficacy for IBD management, IBD-related pregnancy knowledge, and IBD-related pregnancy anxiety. It also aimed to explore the changes in participants through the program. METHODS: A convergent mixed-methods study design was adopted. In the quantitative phase, 35 women (17 and 18 in the intervention and control group, respectively) participated. The intervention group attended a program that included small-group sessions and individual tele-coaching. To confirm the effects, data were collected before and one and four weeks after the intervention. In the qualitative stage, focus group interviews and tele-coaching were conducted with the intervention group. RESULTS: After the program ended, significant differences were observed over time between the intervention and control groups for self-efficacy for IBD management (Wald χ² = 4.41, p = .036), IBD-related pregnancy knowledge (Wald χ² = 13.80, p < .001) and IBD-related pregnancy anxiety (Wald χ² = 8.61, p = .003). Qualitative data analysis revealed the following themes: (1) improving confidence in IBD management and awareness for planned pregnancy; (2) improving IBD awareness related to pregnancy and childbirth; and (3) relieving anxiety about and actively facing pregnancy. CONCLUSION: This study is meaningful in that, to the best of our knowledge, it is the first to develop a pre-conception care program for women diagnosed with IBD and confirm its effectiveness. Furthermore, this program is expected to be suitable for patient counseling and education in clinical practice.

Existing research has underscored the vital interplay between host organisms and their associated microbiomes, which affects health and function. In both plants and animals, host factors critically shape microbial communities and influence growth, health, and immunity. Post-harvest plants, such as those used in kimchi, a traditional Korean dish, offer a unique avenue for exploring host-microbe dynamics during fermentation. Despite the emphasis on lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in fermentation studies, the roles of host factors remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the influence of these factors on plant transcriptomes during kimchi fermentation. We individually inoculated nine LAB strains into germ-free kimchi to generate LAB-mono-associated gnotobiotic kimchi and performed RNA-sequencing analysis for the host vegetables during fermentation. The transcriptomes of post-harvest vegetables in kimchi change over time, and microbes affect the transcriptome profiles of vegetables. Differentially expressed gene analyses revealed that microbes affected the temporal expression profiles of several genes in the plant transcriptomes in unique directions depending on the introduced LAB strains. Cluster analysis with other publicly available transcriptomes of post-harvest vegetables and fruits further revealed that the plant transcriptome is more profoundly influenced by the environment harboring the host than by host phylogeny. Our results bridge the gap in understanding the bidirectional relationship between host vegetables and microbes during food fermentation, illuminating the complex interplay between vegetable transcriptomes, fermentative microbes, and the fermentation process in food production. The different transcriptomic responses elicited by specific LAB strains suggest the possibility of microbial manipulation to achieve the desired fermentation outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the significance of response assessment with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) during chemoradiotherapy (CRT) for outcomes of adenocarcinoma of the cervix. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 102 patients diagnosed with FIGO 1B3-IVa cervical adenocarcinoma was conducted. Patients underwent definitive CRT and brachytherapy. Mid-treatment MRI-assessments were used to evaluate tumor response during radiotherapy, focusing on tumor volume reduction rate (TVRR), which was defined as an optimal reduction rate from initial tumor volume for tumor progression. Locoregional recurrence (LRR), distant metastasis (DM), progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) rates according to the tumor response were analyzed. RESULTS: Forty-five (44.1 %) of 102 patients experienced tumor downstaging during CRT, with 72 (70.5 %) demonstrating a complete response on post-treatment MRI three months after radiotherapy. With a median follow-up of 35.5 months, the 3-year PFS and overall OS rates for all patients were 60.0 % and 84.0 %, respectively. LRR and DM rates at 3 years were 25.2 % and 23.3 %, respectively. Patients with TVRR≥81.8 % had significantly longer 3-year PFS (75.4 % vs. 36.2 %, P < 0.001) and OS (93.2 % vs. 69.0 %, P = 0.002) rates than the other patients with TVRR<81.8 %. LRR (10.6 % vs. 45.6 %, P = 0.003) and DM (14.6 % vs. 33.5 %, P = 0.008) rates at 3 years were significantly lower in TVRR≥81.8 % group compared to TVRR<81.8 % group. In the multivariate analysis, positive initial lymph node (hazard ratio [HR], 2.11; confidence interval [CI], 1.25-3.87; P = 0.02] and TVRR (HR, 0.42; CI, 0.19-0.93; P = 0.03) were significantly associated with PFS. CONCLUSION: Mid-treatment MRI assessment is crucial and higher rates of tumor volume reduction during radiotherapy indicates better prognosis for tumor recurrence and patient survival in cervical adenocarcinoma.

Fucosterols have been widely studied for their antioxidant, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory properties. However, they have not yet been studied in the field of dentistry. This study aimed to determine whether pretreatment of dentin with fucosterol before resin restoration enhances bond stability in resin-dentin hybrid layers. After applying 0.1, 0.5, and 1.0 wt% fucosterol to demineralized dentin, microtensile bond strength (MTBS) and nanoleakage tests were performed before and after collagenase aging, and the surface was observed using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The fucosterol-treated group showed better bond strength and less nanoleakage both before and after collagenase aging, and the corresponding structures were confirmed using SEM. MMP zymography confirmed that the activity of MMPs was relatively low along the concentration gradient of fucosterol, and the FTIR analysis confirmed the production of collagen crosslinks. In addition, fucosterol exhibits cytotoxicity against Streptococcus mutans, the main cause of dental decay. The results of this study suggest that fucosterol pretreatment improves bond strength and reduces nanoleakage at the resin-dentin interface, possibly through a mechanism involving collagen cross-link formation via the inhibition of endogenous and exogenous MMP activity. This study demonstrates the potential of fucosterol as an MMP inhibitor in dentin, which contributes to long-term resin-dentin bond stability and can be used as a restorative material.

Background: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the supporting tissues of the teeth, and can lead to serious complications such as tooth loss and systemic health problems, including diabetes, which have a bidirectional relationship with periodontitis. Circulating microparticles originate from different cell types after stimuli such as activation or apoptosis. Interleukins are related to processes in the regulation of the immune response, inflammation, and cell growth. This study aimed to evaluate circulating microparticles as well as interleukins in the plasma, at baseline and 1 month after the end of the non-surgical periodontal treatment. Methods: Samples were collected from 45 patients, with moderate to severe periodontitis with diabetes (N = 25) and without diabetes (N = 20). Microparticles were evaluated in the platelet-poor plasma by flow cytometer. Cytokine levels were evaluated by the enzyme immunoabsorption assay (ELISA). Results: Higher levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines were found in the group with diabetes compared to the non-diabetic group both at baseline and 1 month after the end of the treatment. A higher IL-6/IL-10 ratio was found in patients with diabetes compared to the group without diabetes at T0 and T1, whereas an increased IFN-γ/IL-10 ratio was only found at T1 in patients with diabetes in comparison to the group without diabetes. In the group with diabetes, it was verified positive correlations between IL-10 and IL-6 or IFN-γ and a negative correlation between IL-6 and PMP, at T0; in contrast, in the T1, negative correlations were found between TNF-α and IL-10 or PMP. Besides, at T0, it was evidenced positive correlations both between circulating TNF-α and IL-6, and IL-10 and EMP, as well as a negative correlation between IL-10 and PMP in the group with diabetes. In addition, it was observed in T1 positive correlations between levels of TNF-α and IL-6, IFN-γ, or IL-10, and between PMP and IFN-γ, and between EMP and IL-6, TNF-α and IFN-γ in this group. Conclusion: The results suggest a modulatory effect of the periodontitis associated with diabetes, as well as the periodontal treatment, in the systemic inflammatory status of the participants of the study.

As interest in eco-friendly work vehicles grows, research on the powertrains of eco-friendly tractors has increased, including research on the development of eco-friendly vehicles (tractors) using hydrogen fuel cell power packs and batteries. However, batteries require a long time to charge and have a short operating time due to their low energy efficiency compared with hydrogen fuel cell power packs. Therefore, recent studies have focused on the development of tractors using hydrogen fuel cell power packs; however, there is a lack of research on powertrain performance analysis considering actual working conditions. To evaluate vehicle performance, an actual load measurement during agricultural operation must be conducted. The objective of this study was to conduct an efficiency analysis of powertrains according to their power source using data measured during agricultural operations. A performance evaluation with respect to efficiency was performed through comparison and an analysis with internal combustion engine tractors of the same level. The specifications of the transmission for hydrogen fuel cell and engine tractors were used in this study. The power loss and efficiency of the transmission were calculated using ISO 14179-1 equations, as shown below. Plow tillage and rotary tillage operations were conducted for data measurement. The measurement system consists of four components. The engine data load measurement was calculated using the vehicle's controller area network (CAN) data, the axle load was measured using an axle torque meter and proximity sensors, and fuel consumption was measured using the sensor installed on the fuel line. The calculated capacities, considering the engine's fuel efficiency for plow and rotary tillage operations, were 131.2 and 175.1 kWh, respectively. The capacity of the required power, considering the powertrain's efficiency for hydrogen fuel cell tractors with respect to plow and rotary tillage operations, was calculated using the efficiency of the motor, inverter, and power pack, and 51.3 and 62.9 kWh were the values obtained, respectively. Considering these factors, the engine exhibited an efficiency of about 47.9% compared with the power pack in the case of plow tillage operations, and the engine exhibited an efficiency of about 29.3% in the case of rotary tillage operations. A hydrogen fuel cell tractor is considered suitable for high-efficiency and eco-friendly vehicles because it can operate on eco-friendly power sources while providing the advantages of a motor.

Idiopathic hemiazygos vein aneurysm is a rare lesion that can be difficult to diagnose. Here we report a case of asymptomatic idiopathic hemiazygos vein aneurysm (HAVA) that was incidentally discovered on chest computed tomography (CT) and mistaken for enlarged lymph nodes. The patient underwent thoracoscopic surgery for a biopsy, which confirmed that he had an idiopathic hemiazygos aneurysm. Delayed contrast-enhanced CT was performed after surgery, and it was confirmed that the hemiazygos vein aneurysm was connected to the adjacent vessel.

Climate models indicate that dry extremes will be exacerbated in many regions of the world1,2. However, confidence in the magnitude and timing of these projected changes remains low3,4, leaving societies largely unprepared5,6. Here we show that constraining model projections with observations using a newly proposed emergent constraint (EC) reduces the uncertainty in predictions of a core drought indicator, the longest annual dry spell (LAD), by 10-26% globally. Our EC-corrected projections reveal that the increase in LAD will be 42-44% greater, on average, than 'mid-range' or 'high-end' future forcing scenarios currently indicate. These results imply that by the end of this century, the global mean land-only LAD could be 10 days longer than currently expected. Using two generations of climate models, we further uncover global regions for which historical LAD biases affect the magnitude of projected LAD increases, and we explore the role of land-atmosphere feedbacks therein. Our findings reveal regions with potentially higher- and earlier-than-expected drought risks for societies and ecosystems, and they point to possible mechanisms underlying the biases in the current generation of climate models.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an interactive program designed to reduce nursing students' perceived stress and improve self-efficacy and readiness to professionally address incivility during clinical practice. BACKGROUND: Incivility in clinical settings adversely impacts learners, educators, institutions, and healthcare systems, undermining safety and the teaching-learning process. Despite its increasing global prevalence, effective interventions remain largely unexplored. METHODS: Our mixed-methods study, conducted from March to April 2024, involved senior baccalaureate pre-licensure nursing students (N = 35) from a California State University. The three-week, one-hour-per-week, interactive clinical incivility management program was developed through an extensive literature review. Pre- and post-intervention differences were assessed using a 10 min self-administered online survey that included the Uncivil Behavior in Clinical Nursing Education (UBCNE; 12 items), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS; 10 items), General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSE; 10 items), and a sample characteristics questionnaire (11 items). A one-hour face-to-face focus group (n = 11) then provided qualitative data on personal experiences of clinical incivility. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS version 27, while qualitative data were analyzed using Colaizzi's method. RESULTS: Clinical incivility prevalence was 71.4% (n = 25 out of 35). No statistically significant differences were found in UBCNE, PSS, and GSE scores between pre- and post-intervention. However, professional responses to clinical incivility significantly improved after the intervention (t = -12.907, p < 0.001). Four themes emerged from the qualitative data: (a) uncivil behaviors or language from nurses, (b) emotional discouragement and low self-confidence, (c) resource and personnel shortages at clinical sites for education, and (d) the necessity for interventions to manage clinical incivility. CONCLUSIONS: Nursing schools and clinical agencies should collaborate to establish monitoring systems, enhance communication, and implement evidence-based policies and interactive interventions to prevent and manage clinical incivility experienced by nursing students from clinical sites.

Non-thermal plasma (NTP) is an emerging technology with extensive applications in biomedicine, including treatment of abnormal pigmentation. However, very few studies have investigated how plasma induces anti-melanogenesis. Here, liquid plasma was prepared by treating an NTP jet with helium and oxygen (as carrier gases) for 15 min in serum-free culture media. In the zebrafish model, pigmentation ratio was observed with or without liquid plasma. The anti-melanogenic effect of liquid plasma was evaluated in human melanocytes by assessing the expression of melanogenesis-related genes using western blotting, RT-PCR, and immunohistochemistry. Liquid plasma reduced pigmentation in the zebrafish model and inhibited melanin synthesis in primary human melanocytes. Intracellular reactive oxygen species levels decreased and Nrf2 expression increased in liquid plasma-treated melanocytes. Liquid plasma affected microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) and tyrosinase mRNA and protein levels, tyrosinase activity, and melanin content. Considering the role of Wnt/ß-catenin and PI3K/Akt pathways in melanogenesis, the effect of liquid plasma on this pathway was determined; liquid plasma decreased active ß-catenin, LEF1/TCF4, MITF, and tyrosinase levels in a time-dependent manner and inhibited the nuclear translocation of ß-catenin. This inhibition subsequently suppressed melanogenesis by downregulating MITF and tyrosinase. These results suggest that liquid plasma may be used for treating pigmentary disorders.

To examine the independent and combined association of resting heart rate (RHR) and physical activity (PA) with risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality. RHR was categorized as < 60, 60-69, 70-79, and ≥ 80 bpm. Meeting PA guidelines was defined as ≥ 150 min/week of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA). Cox proportional hazard models were used to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) for CVD mortality associated with RHR and PA. Among 31,697 participants, 311 CVD deaths occurred during 9.2 years of follow-up. Compared to RHR of 60-69 bpm, the risk of CVD mortality was higher in RHR of < 60 bpm (HR, 1.48; 95% CI, 1.05-2.10) and ≥ 80 bpm (HR, 1.42; 95% CI, 1.06-1.91). Participants who met PA guidelines had a lower risk of CVD mortality (HR, 0.59; 95% CI, 0.44-0.78). Among physically inactive adults compared to participants in RHR of 60-69 bpm with meeting PA guidelines, the adjusted HR for CVD mortality was 2.41 (95% CI, 1.42-4.08) for RHR of < 60 bpm, 1.59 (95% CI, 1.01-2.49) for RHR of 60-69 bpm, 1.98 (95% CI, 1.23-3.20) for RHR of 70-79 bpm and 2.41 (95% CI, 1.50-3.89) for RHR of ≥ 80 bpm Exceeding the minimum level of PA guidelines may attenuate the risk of CVD mortality associated with RHR.

Adenoviruses are commonly utilized as viral vectors for gene therapy, genetic vaccines, and recombinant protein expression. To generate replication-defective adenoviruses, E1-complementing cell lines such as HEK293A are utilized; however, limitations remain. Repeated passage of E1-deleted virus in HEK293A cells increases the occurrence of replication-competent adenoviruses (RCAs). In the present study, we developed a novel cell line originating from human primary cells. L132 cells were transduced two times with E1-encoded retrovirus and three times with E1A-encoded retrovirus. Finally, we selected the most productive L132 cell line for generation of RCA-free adenovirus, GT541. GT541 can serve as an alternative cell line to HEK293A and other adenovirus-producing cells.

The role of combining neoadjuvant endocrine therapy with conventional chemotherapy remains unclear; therefore, we conducted an open-label, single-center, nonrandomized phase II trial to assess the effect of this combination. Patients with previously untreated stage II or III HR-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer received concurrent letrozole 2.5 mg with standard neoadjuvant chemotherapy. The primary endpoint was pathologic complete response (pCR) at the time of surgery. We used Simon's minimax two-stage design; a pCR rate > 6% was necessary at the first stage to continue. Between November 2017 and November 2020, 53 women were enrolled in the first stage of the trial. Their median age was 49 years (range, 33-63), and 60% of them were premenopausal. Subsequently, 66% and 34% of patients with clinical stages II and III, respectively, were included; 93% had clinically node-positive disease. Two patients (4%) achieved pCR after neoadjuvant chemo-endocrine treatment, which did not satisfy the criteria for continuing to the second stage. The overall response rate was 83%. During the median follow-up of 53.7 months, the 3-year disease-free survival and overall survival rates were 87% and 98%, respectively. Neutropenia was the most common grade 3/4 adverse event (40%), but rarely led to febrile neutropenic episodes (4%). Myalgia (32%), nausea (19%), constipation (17%), heartburn (11%), oral mucositis (9%), and sensory neuropathy (9%) were frequently observed, but classified as grade 1 or 2. No deaths occurred during preoperative treatment. The addition of letrozole to standard neoadjuvant chemotherapy was safe and beneficial in terms of overall response rate, but did not provide a higher pCR rate in locally advanced HR-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer. Further research is needed to enhance neoadjuvant treatment strategies for this cancer subtype.

Chronic tympanic membrane (TM) perforation is a tubotympanic disease caused by either traumatic injury or inflammation. A recent study demonstrated significant progress in promoting the regeneration of chronic TM perforations through the application of nanofibers with radially aligned nanostructures and controlled release of growth factors. However, radially aligned nanostructures with stem cell-stimulating factors have never been used. In this study, insulin-like growth factor binding factor 2 (IGFBP2)-incorporated radially aligned nanofibrous patches (IRA-NFPs) were developed and applied to regenerate chronic TM perforations. The IRA-NFPs were prepared by electrospinning 8 wt% polycaprolactone in trifluoroethanol and acetic acid (9:1). Random nanofibers (RFs) and aligned nanofibers (AFs) were successfully fabricated using a flat plate and a custom-designed circular collector, respectively. The presence of IGFBP2 was confirmed via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and the release of IGFBP2 was sustained for up to 20 days. In vitro studies revealed enhanced cellular proliferation and migration on AFs compared to RFs, with IGFBP2 incorporation further promoting these effects. Quantitative real-time PCR revealed mRNA downregulation, correlating with accelerated migration and increased cell confluency. In vivo studies using Choung's COM model 1 showed IGFBP2-loaded RF and AF patches increased regeneration success rates by 1.59-fold and 2.23-fold, respectively, while also reducing healing time by 2.5-fold compared to controls. Furthermore, IGFBP2-incorporated AFs demonstrated superior efficacy in healing larger perforations with enhanced histological similarity to native TMs. This study, combining stem cell stimulating factors and aligned nanostructures, proposes a novel approach potentially replacing conventional surgical methods for chronic TM perforation regeneration. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Chronic otitis media (COM) affects approximately 200 million people worldwide due to inflammation, inadequate blood supply, and lack of growth factors. Current surgical treatments have limitations like high costs and anesthetic risks. Recent research explored the use of nanofibers with radially aligned nanostructures and controlled release of growth factors to treat chronic tympanic membrane (TM) perforations. In this study, insulin-like growth factor binding protein 2 (IGFBP2)-incorporated radially aligned nanofibrous patches (IRA-NFPs) were developed and applied to regenerate chronic TM perforations. We assessed their properties and efficacy through in vitro and in vivo studies. IRA-NFPs showed promising healing capabilities with chronic TM perforation models. This innovative approach has the potential to improve COM management, reduce surgery costs, and enhance patient safety.

Microbial polysaccharides derived from bacterial sources possess unique properties because of their structural complexity contributing to exceptional characteristics, including potent immunostimulatory effects. In this study, we extracted crude polysaccharide from Bacillus velezensis GV1 (BPS) which was isolated from Korean ginseng vinegar, and subsequently characterized for sugar composition and functional groups using FT-IR and methylation method. Structural analysis indicated that BPS was composed of mannan and glucan in a ratio of 7.5:2.5. The immunostimulatory effect of BPS was investigated in RAW264.7 macrophages. The results revealed that BPS significantly increased NO production, as well as the secretion and expression of key cytokines, such as IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-1ß. These effects were confirmed using a TLR4 antagonist (TAK-242). Moreover, BPS exhibited immunostimulatory potential by promoting the NF-κB signaling pathway. In conclusion, this study establishes a foundation for the potential application of BPS as an immunostimulatory adjuvant or alternative component in functional foods, particularly for enhancing innate immune responses.

Amaranthus, Sesamum indicum, and Linum usitatissimum are the most popular oilseed grains worldwide. Protein-rich Amaranthus contains bioactive peptides, is nutritious, and exhibits anti-allergic properties. Sesamum indicum is a primary trigger of anaphylaxis. Linum usitatissimum also displays allergenic properties. A DNA marker assessable using quantitative real-time PCR was developed to detect S. indicum and L. usitatissimum as allergenic contaminants of anti-allergenic Amaranthus. The efficiency of each primer set ranged from 90-98%, and high linear correlation (R2 > 0.99) was obtained between crossover values and the log DNA concentration. We established a Ct value of 0.1% of the binary as a cutoff. The practical application of the designed marker was confirmed by analyzing 20 commercial products. The qPCR system developed for detecting flaxseed and sesame can be applied for regulatory monitoring of allergenic substances in commercial amaranth-containing foods, thus contributing to protecting public health and safety. BACKGROUND: We designed a multi-institutional retrospective study to investigate the previously unreported failure pattern, survivals, and prognostic factors after postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) in triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) patients in South Korea. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 699 patients with TNBC who underwent PORT at six institutions between 2008 and 2010. The median follow-up period was 94 months (range: 7-192 months). There were 216, 380, and 100 patients in stages I, II, and III, respectively. RESULTS: After 94 months post-treatment, all patients with pathologic complete remission after neoadjuvant chemotherapy were alive without any failure. Distant metastasis was the main cause of failure. The 5-year overall survival rate was 91.4%, 5-year loco-regional relapse-free survival rate (LRRFS) was 92.3%, 5-year distant metastasis-free survival rate (DMFS) was 89.4%, and 5-year disease-free survival rate (DFS) was 85.2%. On multivariate (Cox) analysis, T and N stages were significant prognostic factors for survival, and lympho-vascular invasion (LVI) was a significant factor for LRRFS and DMFS. Ki-67 expression was significantly associated with LRRFS and DFS. CONCLUSION: We verified that T and N stages, LVI, and Ki-67 expression were significantly associated with survival outcomes after PORT in TNBC.
