RESUMEN

A Gram-negative, strictly aerobic, non-motile, club-shaped bacterial strain, designated CL-ES2(T), was isolated from coastal water from the east coast of Korea. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain CL-ES2(T) was related to the genera Phaeobacter (95.0-96.6% similarity to the type strains), Leisingera (96.1%) and Marinovum (95.6%) in the family Rhodobacteraceae. However, strain CL-ES2(T) did not form a robust clade with any species of the Roseobacter clade, instead forming a distinct subline. The optimum temperature and pH for growth were 25 degrees C and pH 7. Strain CL-ES2(T) was able to grow with sea salts at concentrations in the range 2-6%, with optimum growth occurring at 3-4%. The major fatty acid was C(18:1)omega7c (75.2%). The polar lipids were phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, an unidentified aminolipid and three unidentified lipids. The isoprenoid quinone was Q-10. The G+C content of the DNA was 47.0 mol%. On the basis of the data from the polyphasic analysis, strain CL-ES2(T) represents a novel genus and species, for which the name Pelagicola litoralis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Pelagicola litoralis is CL-ES2(T) (=KCCM 42274(T) =DSM 18290(T)).

RESUMEN

A Gram-negative, strictly aerobic, marine bacterium, designated strain CL-YJ9(T), was isolated from sediment closely associated with the roots of a plant (Suaeda japonica) inhabiting a coastal tidal flat. Cells of the novel strain were straight and rod-shaped and were motile by means of monopolar flagella. A phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain CL-YJ9(T) belongs to the genus Marinobacterium and was most closely related to Marinobacterium halophilum mano11(T) (94.1% sequence similarity) and to other members of the genus Marinobacterium (92.5-93.7% sequence similarity). The strain grew with 1-5% NaCl (optimum, 3%) and at 5-30 degrees C (optimum, approx. 25 degrees C) and pH 6.0-9.0 (optimum, pH 7.0). The predominant cellular fatty acids were summed feature 3 (C(16:1)omega7c and/or iso-C(15:0) 2-OH, 40.3%), C(18:1)omega7c (26.6%), C(16:0) (16.6%) and C(10:0) 3-OH (7.1%). The major isoprenoid quinone was Q-8. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 61 mol%. On the basis of the data from this polyphasic study, strain CL-YJ9(T) belongs to the genus Marinobacterium but is distinguishable from the recognized species. Strain CL-YJ9(T) therefore represents a novel species, for which the name Marinobacterium rhizophilum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CL-YJ9(T) (=KCCM 42386(T) =DSM 18822(T)).

RESUMEN

A Gram-positive, moderately halotolerant bacterium, designated CL-GR16(T), was isolated from coastal water off the east coast of Korea. The strain was strictly aerobic, rod-shaped, motile by means of peritrichous flagella and produced ellipsoidal spores. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the isolate represented an independent lineage within Bacillus rRNA group 1, showing 93.6-94.6 % similarity with respect to the genus Ornithinibacillus, 94.0 % with respect to Paucisalibacillus, 91.0-93.5 % with respect to Virgibacillus, 93.2-93.3 % with respect to Salinibacillus and 92.8-93.2 % with respect to Oceanobacillus. The optimum temperature and pH for growth were 30 degrees C and pH 7.5. Strain CL-GR16(T) was able to grow at NaCl concentrations from 0 to 14 %, with optimum growth occurring at 0-2 % NaCl. The strain lacked oxidase. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C(15 : 0) (65.6 %), anteiso-C(17 : 0) (11.0 %) and iso-C(15 : 0) (9.1 %). The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and an unidentified glycolipid. The predominant menaquinone was MK-7. The G+C content of the DNA was 43 mol%. On the basis of the results of the polyphasic analysis, strain CL-GR16(T) represents a novel genus and species, for which the name Pelagibacillus goriensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is strain CL-GR16(T) (=KCCM 42329(T)=DSM 18252(T)).

RESUMEN

A halotolerant, facultatively alkaliphilic bacterium, designated CL-MP28T, was isolated from the surface of a sediment core sample collected at a depth of 2247 m in the Ulleung Basin of the East Sea, Korea. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain CL-MP28T revealed an affiliation with the genus Oceanobacillus. The sequence similarities between the isolate and type strains of members of the genus Oceanobacillus were in the range 95.0-96.0 %, indicating that strain CL-MP28T represented a novel species within the genus. The strain was found to be Gram-positive, rod-shaped and motile by means of peritrichous flagella and was shown to produce ellipsoidal spores. The strain was strictly aerobic and able to grow with NaCl at concentrations in the range 0-14 % (w/v) at pH 7.5. The strain grew at temperatures of 15-42 degrees C and at pH 6.5-9.5. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C(15 : 0) (64.9 %), anteiso-C(17 : 0) (11.9 %) and iso-C(16 : 0) (7.7 %). The major isoprenoid quinone was MK-7. The DNA G+C content was 40.2 mol%. According to the 16S rRNA gene sequence, DNA-DNA relatedness and physiological data and the fatty acid composition, CL-MP28T could be assigned to the genus Oceanobacillus, but is distinguishable from the recognized species of this genus. Strain CL-MP28T therefore represents a novel species within the genus Oceanobacillus, for which the name Oceanobacillus profundus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CL-MP28T (=KCCM 42318T=DSM 18246T).

RESUMEN

A rod-shaped bacterium, designated CL-TF13T, was isolated from a tidal flat in Ganghwa, Korea. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed an affiliation with the genus Tenacibaculum. The sequence similarities between CL-TF13T and type strains of members of the genus Tenacibaculum were from 94.2 to 97.4%. Cells were motile by means of gliding. Strain CL-TF13T grew on solid medium as pale-yellow colonies with an irregular spreading edge. The strain was able to grow in NaCl at a range of 3-5%. They grew within a temperature range of 5-40 degrees C and at pH range of 6-10. The major fatty acids were summed feature 3 (C(16:1)omega7c and/or iso-C(15:0) 2-OH, 19.6%), iso-C(15:0) (18.8%) and iso-C(17:0) 3-OH (13.6%). Fatty acids such as C(18:3)omega6c (6,9,12) (1.5%) and summed feature 4 (iso I- and/or anteiso B-C(17:1), 1.3%) were uniquely found in minor quantities in CL-TF13T among Tenacibaculum species. The DNA G + C content was 30 mol%. According to physiological data, fatty-acid composition and 16S rRNA gene sequence, CL-TF13T could be assigned to the genus Tenacibaculum but distinguished from the recognized species of the genus. Therefore, strain CL-TF13T (= KCCM 42115T = JCM 13039T) represents a novel species, for which the name Tenacibaculum litoreum sp. nov. is proposed.
