RESUMEN

We present the first search for the pair production of dark particles X via K_{L}^{0}→XX with X decaying into two photons using the data collected by the KOTO experiment. No signal was observed in the mass range of 40-110 MeV/c^{2} and 210-240 MeV/c^{2}. This sets upper limits on the branching fractions as B(K_{L}^{0}→XX)<(1-4)×10^{-7} and B(K_{L}^{0}→XX)<(1-2)×10^{-6} at the 90% confidence level for the two mass regions, respectively.

RESUMEN

The new isotope ^{39}Na, the most neutron-rich sodium nucleus observed so far, was discovered at the RIKEN Nishina Center Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory using the projectile fragmentation of an intense ^{48}Ca beam at 345 MeV/nucleon on a beryllium target. Projectile fragments were separated and identified in flight with the large-acceptance two-stage separator BigRIPS. Nine ^{39}Na events have been unambiguously observed in this work and clearly establish the particle stability of ^{39}Na. Furthermore, the lack of observation of ^{35,36}Ne isotopes in this experiment significantly improves the overall confidence that ^{34}Ne is the neutron dripline nucleus of neon. These results provide new key information to understand nuclear binding and nuclear structure under extremely neutron-rich conditions. The newly established stability of ^{39}Na has a significant impact on nuclear models and theories predicting the neutron dripline and also provides a key to understanding the nuclear shell property of ^{39}Na at the neutron number N=28, which is normally a magic number.

RESUMEN

The rare decay K_{L}→π^{0}νν[over ¯] was studied with the dataset taken at the J-PARC KOTO experiment in 2016, 2017, and 2018. With a single event sensitivity of (7.20±0.05_{stat}±0.66_{syst})×10^{-10}, three candidate events were observed in the signal region. After unveiling them, contaminations from K^{±} and scattered K_{L} decays were studied, and the total number of background events was estimated to be 1.22±0.26. We conclude that the number of observed events is statistically consistent with the background expectation. For this dataset, we set an upper limit of 4.9×10^{-9} on the branching fraction of K_{L}→π^{0}νν[over ¯] at the 90% confidence level.

RESUMEN

A search for the rare decay K_{L}→π^{0}νν[over ¯] was performed. With the data collected in 2015, corresponding to 2.2×10^{19} protons on target, a single event sensitivity of (1.30±0.01_{stat}±0.14_{syst})×10^{-9} was achieved and no candidate events were observed. We set an upper limit of 3.0×10^{-9} for the branching fraction of K_{L}→π^{0}νν[over ¯] at the 90% confidence level (C.L.), which improved the previous limit by almost an order of magnitude. An upper limit for K_{L}→π^{0}X^{0} was also set as 2.4×10^{-9} at the 90% C.L., where X^{0} is an invisible boson with a mass of 135 MeV/c^{2}.

RESUMEN

The discovery of the important neutron-rich nucleus _{20}^{60}Ca_{40} and seven others near the limits of nuclear stability is reported from the fragmentation of a 345 MeV/u ^{70}Zn projectile beam on ^{9}Be targets at the radioactive ion-beam factory of the RIKEN Nishina Center. The produced fragments were analyzed and unambiguously identified using the BigRIPS two-stage in-flight separator. The eight new neutron-rich nuclei discovered, ^{47}P, ^{49}S, ^{52}Cl, ^{54}Ar, ^{57}K, ^{59,60}Ca, and ^{62}Sc, are the most neutron-rich isotopes of the respective elements. In addition, one event consistent with ^{59}K was registered. The results are compared with the drip lines predicted by a variety of mass models and it is found that the models in best agreement with the observed limits of existence in the explored region tend to predict the even-mass Ca isotopes to be bound out to at least ^{70}Ca.

RESUMEN

Excited states in the N=102 isotones 166Gd and 164Sm have been observed following isomeric decay for the first time at RIBF, RIKEN. The half-lives of the isomeric states have been measured to be 950(60) and 600(140) ns for 166Gd and 164Sm, respectively. Based on the decay patterns and potential energy surface calculations, including ß6 deformation, a spin and parity of 6- has been assigned to the isomeric states in both nuclei. Collective observables are discussed in light of the systematics of the region, giving insight into nuclear shape evolution. The decrease in the ground-band energies of 166Gd and 164Sm (N=102) compared to 164Gd and 162Sm (N=100), respectively, presents evidence for the predicted deformed shell closure at N=100.

RESUMEN

Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy in the Ce 3d-->4f excitation region was measured for the paramagnetic state of CeRu2Si2, CeRu2(Si0.82Ge0.18)2, and LaRu2Si2 to investigate the changes of the 4f electron Fermi surfaces around the quantum critical point. While the difference of the Fermi surfaces between CeRu2Si2 and LaRu2Si2 was experimentally confirmed, a strong 4f-electron character was observed in the band structures and the Fermi surfaces of CeRu2Si2 and CeRu2(Si0.82Ge0.18)2, consequently indicating a delocalized nature of the 4f electrons in both compounds. The absence of Fermi surface reconstruction across the critical composition suggests that SDW quantum criticality is more appropriate than local quantum criticality in CeRu2(Si1-xGex)2.

RESUMEN

We performed a search for a light pseudoscalar particle X in the decay K_{L};{0}-->pi;{0}pi;{0}X, X-->gammagamma with the E391a detector at KEK. Such a particle with a mass of 214.3 MeV/c;{2} was suggested by the HyperCP experiment. We found no evidence for X and set an upper limit on the product branching ratio for K_{L};{0}-->pi;{0}pi;{0}X, X-->gammagamma of 2.4x10;{-7} at the 90% confidence level. Upper limits on the branching ratios in the mass region of X from 194.3 to 219.3 MeV/c;{2} are also presented.

RESUMEN

Three events for the decay K+-->pi+ nunu have been observed in the pion momentum region below the K+-->pi+pi0 peak, 140 < Ppi < 199 MeV/c, with an estimated background of 0.93+/-0.17(stat.) -0.24+0.32(syst.) events. Combining this observation with previously reported results yields a branching ratio of B(K+-->pi+ nunu) = (1.73(-1.05)+1.15) x 10(-10) consistent with the standard model prediction.

RESUMEN

We report de Haas-van Alphen effect measurements on CeRu2(Si(1-x)Gex)2 to reveal electronic structure change over the broad range of chemical pressure from x=0.0 to 1.0. It is found that the Fermi surface properties change drastically across the metamagnetic crossover field (B(m)) but vary smoothly with x from those in magnetic fields above B(m) in CeRu2Si2 to those in the ferromagnetic state in CeRu2Ge2. Implications of the present results are discussed in conjunction with the magnetic phase diagram.

In an effort to develop DS02, a new radiation dosimetry system for the atomic bomb survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, measurements of neutron-induced activities have provided valuable information to reconstruct the radiation situation at the time of the bombings. In Hiroshima, the depth profile of (152)Eu activity measured in a granite pillar of the Motoyasu Bridge (128 m from the hypocenter) was compared with that calculated using the DS02 methodology. For calculation of the (152)Eu production due to the thermal-neutron activation reaction, (151)Eu(n,gamma)(152)Eu, information on the hydrogen content in granite is important because the transport and slowing-down process of neutrons penetrating into the pillar is strongly affected by collisions with the protons of hydrogen. In this study, proton-proton elastic recoil coincidence spectrometry has been used to deduce the proton density in the Motoyasu pillar granite. Slices of granite samples were irradiated by a 20 MeV proton beam, and the energies of scattered and recoil protons were measured with a coincidence method. The water concentration in the pillar granite was evaluated to be 0.30 +/- 0.07%wt. This result is consistent with earlier data on adsorptive water (II) and bound water obtained by the Karl Fisher method.

RESUMEN

The magnetic structure of the localized-5f uranium intermetallic compound U3Pd20Si6 has been determined by means of a neutron diffraction experiment. Our data demonstrate that this compound has a collinear coupling of the sublattice ordering of the uranium spins on the 4a and 8c sites. We conclude that higher-order exchange and/or quadrupole interactions are necessary to stabilize this unique collinear structure. We discovered a new type of spin-flop transition against the uniaxial anisotropy induced by this collinear coupling.

We report measurements of the de Haas-van Alphen effect in UGe (2) under hydrostatic pressures up to 17.6 kbar, exceeding the critical pressure P(c) for the suppression of ferromagnetism. A discontinuous change of the Fermi surface is found to occur across P(c). Substantially enhanced effective masses (approximately 40m(e)) are found near P(c) on both the ferromagnetic and the paramagnetic sides.

RESUMEN

The electronic structure of heavy-fermion compounds arises from the interaction of nearly localized 4f- or 5f-shell electrons (with atomic magnetic moments) with the free-electron-like itinerant conduction-band electrons. In actinide or rare-earth heavy-fermion materials, this interaction yields itinerant electrons having an effective mass about 100 times (or more) the bare electron mass. Moreover, the itinerant electrons in UPd2Al3 are found to be superconducting well below the magnetic ordering temperature of this compound, whereas magnetism generally suppresses superconductivity in conventional metals. Here we report the detection of a dispersive excitation of the ordered f-electron moments, which shows a strong interaction with the heavy superconducting electrons. This 'magnetic exciton' is a localized excitation which moves through the lattice as a result of exchange forces between the magnetic moments. By combining this observation with previous tunnelling measurements on this material, we argue that these magnetic excitons may produce effective interactions between the itinerant electrons, and so be responsible for superconductivity in a manner analogous to the role played by phonons in conventional superconductors.

By using the X-ray diffraction technique, residual short-range order was detected in CeInCu(2), cerium dicopper indium, which is known to be a heavy fermion compound. In spite of the long-range order of this substance, diffuse scattering exhibiting short-range order was observed at room temperature. The correlation parameters obtained showed that an incorrectly occupied lattice site has a tendency to gather atoms of different species at the neighboring sites along the <111> directions. Thus, the disordered region would form a cluster composed of several disordered atoms. Furthermore, a chain-type correlation which has a period of 20-23 Å along the same directions was indicated. The superstructure-like feature of the disordered atoms hardly increases the residual resistivity. It is consistent with the behavior of the residual resistivity under high pressure.

A cDNA encoding a rat intestinal Ca(2+)-independent phospholipase B/lipase (PLB/LIP) was cloned from an ileac mucosa cDNA library using a probe amplified by polymerase chain reaction based on the purified enzyme's sequence. PLB/LIP consists of an NH2-terminal signal peptide, four tandem repeats of about 350 amino acids each, and a hydrophobic domain near the COOH terminus. The enzyme purified previously was found to be derived from the second repeat part. To examine the function of each domain, the full-length PLB/LIP, individual repeats, and a protein lacking the COOH-terminal hydrophobic stretch were expressed in COS-7 cells. The results showed that the second repeat, but not the other repeats, had all the activities (phospholipase A2, lysophospholipase, and lipase) found in the purified natural and expressed full-length enzymes, suggesting repeat 2 is a catalytic domain. The full-length enzyme was mainly present in membrane fractions and efficiently solubilized by treatment with 1% Triton X-100, but not with phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C. Deletion of the COOH-terminal hydrophobic stretch caused the secretion of > 90% of synthesized PLB/LIP into culture media. These results suggest the hydrophobic domain is not replaced by a glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchor but serves as a membrane anchor directly. A message of the full-length PLB/LIP was abundantly expressed in the ileum and also, in a smaller, but significant amount, in the esophagus and testis. Immunohistochemistry showed that PLB/LIP is localized in brush border membranes of the absorptive cells, Paneth cells, and acrosomes of spermatid, suggesting its roles related and unrelated to intestinal digestion.
