RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The purpose of surgeries performed for congenital anomalies in children is to increase the survival rates and provide a developmental comparison to that of their peers. AIM: The objective of this study was to investigate the development of children following surgery for congenital anomalies and the risk factors affecting their development. METHODS: Our study included 33 children who underwent surgery for gastrointestinal anomalies in our clinic between 2011 and 2016, and did not have any syndrome, chromosomal abnormality, or additional abnormality. Developmental levels were evaluated using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) and the ASQ: Social-Emotional (ASQ: SE) scales adapted for the use on Turkish children. Data on patient history were obtained retrospectively from patient files. RESULTS: The study included 33 patients, including 11 with esophageal atresia, 6 with intestinal atresia, 11 with anorectal malformation, and 5 with Hirschsprung's disease. Developmental delay was found in the ASQ of 72.7% of the patients and the ASQ: SE tool was 27% of the patients. The rate of patients with scores below the threshold from each parameter of ASQ was higher than that of the normal population (p < 0.05). Development delay was detected using the ASQ scale in 100% of those with microcephaly at birth, in 91% of premature infants born between 1500 and 2500 g, and in 83.3% of those with low birth weight to gestational age. CONCLUSIONS: In children who underwent surgery due to congenital anomalies, an evaluation through developmental tests, a post-surgical follow-up process, and a referral to the relevant disciplines when necessary may increase the success of surgery as well as increase the life quality of the patient.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Placental insufficiency is one of the reasons for the reduction of hormone production. Thus, if one of the suspected causes of hypospadias is placental insufficiency, then the neurodevelopmental status of boys with hypospadias may be impaired. The aim of this study was to evaluate the neurodevelopmental status of boys with hypospadias and guide the parents of those who need support to related departments for early intervention. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Boys were divided into two groups, those with hypospadias (group H) and healthy children undergoing traditional circumcision (group C). The parents of the boys completed the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) and ASQ-Social Emotional (SE), both of which are screening instruments for the early identification of developmental and social-emotional problems, respectively. RESULTS: Seventy-eight boys had hypospadias and 59 were admitted for traditional circumcision. The group H had statistically significant more impaired scores than group C in communication, gross motor, and personal-social skill sections. The multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that hypospadias was the independent predictive factor for communication and personal-social skills. CONCLUSION: Hypospadias and neurologic impairment may share common etiologic factors. Accordingly, physicians should keep in mind that if a boy presents with hypospadias, the possibility of having neurologic impairment is higher than normal population and early intervention has crucial importance. Every boy with hypospadias should be evaluated for neurodevelopmental status.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The immunomodulator mifamurtide plus a chemotherapy regimen has been shown to significantly improve the outcome in non-metastatic osteosarcoma patients. We report the results of the addition of mifamurtide to chemotherapy in newly diagnosed patients with osteosarcoma. METHODS: A total of 36 children with osteosarcoma without detectable metastasis were treated between November 2010 and April 2018 at the Ankara University Department of Pediatric Oncology. Mifamurtide was added to the chemotherapy regimen in 17 patients while the remaining 19 did not receive mifamurtide. The probabilities of metastasis and overall survival were compared between the groups. RESULTS: The 43-month survival rate was 87.5% and 89.9% in the patients who received and did not receive mifamurtide, respectively (p=0.65). Common side effects of mifamurtide were chills and fever. The addition of mifamurtide in the high-risk group with ≤95% necrosis tended to decrease the probability of distant metastasis (36.4% vs. 58.3%) (p=0.39). The time to metastasis in the group with positive surgical margins (4 months in one patient in the non-mifamurtide group, 7 and 20 months in the mifamurtide group) was also longer in the mifamurtide group. During the 43-month follow up period, median time to metastasis was longer in the mifamurtide group (20 vs. 5 months). In addition, mifamurtide plus chemotherapy decreased the risk of metastasis in the cases with primary site relapse. CONCLUSIONS: The addition of mifamurtide to chemotherapy might improve event-free survival by decreasing the probability of distant metastasis in bad histologic responders, and also by increasing the time to distant metastasis in the surgical margin positive group. Additional clinical studies are necessary to determine the long-term effects of mifamurtide on metastatic disease.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Genetic contribution is thought to be involved in the pathophysiology of pelvic organ prolapse (POP). We aimed to study the gene expression profiles of the genes HomeoboxA11 (HOXA11), HomeoboxA13 (HOXA13), Collagen Type I (COL1A), Collagen Type III (COL3A), estrogen receptor genes (ESR1 and ESR2) of round (RL) and uterosacral ligaments (USL) in postmenopausal women with uterine prolapse. STUDY DESIGN: Gene expressions of 32 postmenopausal women with prolapse were analysed according to gene expressions of 8 postmenopausal women without prolapse. Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) method was used for the detection of expression levels of the genes. Student's t-Test and Mann-Whitney U test were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: In the USL specimens of all women with uterine prolapse HOXA13 and ESR1 gene expressions were decreased compared to controls (0.5 fold, p = 0.04 and 0.82 fold, p = 0.04, respectively). In the RL specimens, ESR2 gene expression was decreased 0.7 fold in women with prolapse when compared to controls (p = 0.04). In the USL specimens of women with advanced stages of prolapse (stage ≥3), HOXA13 and COL3A gene expressions were decreased compared to controls (0.44 fold, p = 0.043 and 0.39 fold, p = 0.045, respectively). In the RL specimens, ESR2 gene expression was decreased 0.65 fold in women with prolapse when compared to controls (p = 0.052). CONCLUSION: The significant decrease in the expression of the genes HOXA13, COL3A in the USL and ESR2 in the RL especially in advanced stages of prolapse, implicate that these gene expressions may play a role in the development of uterine prolapse.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Hydatid disease remains an important global socioeconomic health problem, particularly in the endemic areas. Although half of the patients show no symptoms, hydatid cysts should be treated because of their fatal complications. The aim of this study is to present the long-term results of percutaneous treatment of hydatid disease using the Örmeci technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-nine patients with 54 cystic lesions were diagnosed with hydatid disease. Twenty-seven of the 54 hydatid cysts located in the spleen were punctured with a 22-gauge Chiba needle through the parenchyma of the spleen under sonographic guidance as a one-step procedure. For every 1 cm of the long diameter of the cyst lesion, 3 cc of fluid from the cysts was aspirated. For each centimeter of the long diameter, 2 cc of pure alcohol (96%) and 1 cc of polidocanol (1%) were injected into the cysts. Five out of 27 patients did not participate in the follow-up. RESULTS: The 22 patients who were treated using the percutaneous Örmeci technique were followed up for a mean±SD (median) of 50.32±65.30 (26.00) months (minimum 4 and maximum 298 months). All patients except one were successfully treated. No deaths or major complications were noted. Seven patients experienced minor complications. CONCLUSION: Percutaneous treatment with the Örmeci technique is a safe, effective, cheap, and reliable method that does not interfere with splenic functions, and this outpatient procedure should be the method of choice for a surgery alternative.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to translate the Evaluation of Ankylosing Spondylitis Quality of Life (EASi-QoL) into the Turkish language and test its validity and reliability. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 100 AS patients (74 males; 26 females; mean age 38.2±9.9 years; range 21 to 63 years) were included. The mean disease duration was 115.9±91.6 months. EASi-QoL was translated from English into Turkish, and synthesis, back translation, revision, and pretest stages were performed. All patients were asked to complete the Turkish version of EASi-QoL. The internal consistency of EASi-QoL was determined with Cronbach's alpha coefficient, and test-retest reliability was assessed by calculating the intra-class correlation coefficient. Confirmatory and explanatory factor analyses were performed to assess structural validity. Construct validity was also investigated by comparing the results of EASi-QoL with the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index (BASFI), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Metrology Index (BASMI), Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Score, Maastricht Ankylosing Spondylitis Enthesitis Score (MASES), and AS-specific QoL scale. RESULTS: Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.910 in the physical function category, 0.893 in the disease activity category, 0.935 in the emotional well- being category, and 0.930 in the social contribution category (α>0.7). Factor loadings of all items in EASi-QoL were higher than 0.7, indicating the high reliability of the questionnaire. There was also a strong positive correlation between all subcategories of EASi-QoL (physical function, disease activity, emotional well-being and social participation) and AS-specific QoL scale, BASDAI, Bath BASFI, patient's global assessment and pain severity. MASES and BASMI showed a moderate correlation with emotional well-being and social participation categories of EASi-QoL. CONCLUSION: Turkish version of EASi-QoL is a reliable and valid scale that can be used in clinical practice to evaluate QoL in detail in patients with AS.

RESUMEN

The effectiveness of semen preparation using the migration-sedimentation (MS) method was evaluated, and compared to density gradient centrifuge and swim-up combination (DGC+SU). Sperm selection using MS is based on motility, thus, deleterious effects for which centrifugation has been blamed, are believed to be avoided. Normozoospermic male patients who had more than 10% forward progressive motile sperm in their ejaculate were included in the study. Spermatozoa selected by two different methods were investigated and compared according to sperm motility, concentration, morphology, vitality, DNA fragmentation, and presence of persistent histones. The concentration and motility of sperm in the MS group was improved when compared to the DGC+SU group, but the difference between groups was not significant. The proportion of sperm with normal morphology was found to be 12.19 ± 6.45% vs. 10.67 ± 5.44%, vitality rate was 74.09 ± 16.65% vs. 70.45 ± 16.78%, DNA fragmentation rate was 3.91 ± 3.96%, vs. 2.95 ± 3.33%, presence of persistent histone proportion was 10.59 ± 13.40%, vs. 8.86 ± 7.89% in DGC+SU and MS groups respectively, without significance. The simple technique avoids centrifuge-based damage.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Behçet's disease (BD) is an inflammatory disease, characterized by oral aphthous lesions, recurrent uveitis, skin lesions, and genital ulcerations. Increased release of several cytokines may play a role in the inflammatory stages of BD. IL-33, a member of the IL-1 cytokine superfamily, plays an important role in inflammation. We analyzed serum IL-33 concentration in BD patients to assess its possible role in the pathophysiology of this disease. METHODS: The study included 54 BD patients, 31 with active BD and 23 with inactive BD as well as 18 matched healthy controls. Serum IL-33 levels were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). RESULTS: The mean serum IL-33 levels were 4.84 ± 2.81 pg/ml in the BD patients (6.16 ± 2.94 pg/ml in the active stage and 2.86 ± 0.54 pg/ml in the inactive stage) and 2.88 ± 0.42 pg/ml in the healthy controls. Serum IL-33 levels were significantly higher in patients with BD compared with the healthy controls (p < 0.01). In active Behçet patients with arthritis the mean serum IL-33 level was higher but this finding was not statistically significant (p = 0.122). CONCLUSION: IL-33 may play a significant role of in the pathogenesis of BD.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic significance of standardized uptake value (SUV) on 18 fluorine-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Thirty-four patients who have histologically proven NPC and underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT were included in this study. After 18F-FDG PET/CT, all the patients received radiation therapy and 32 of them received concomitant weekly chemotherapy. The maximum SUV (SUVmax) at the primary tumor and the SUVmaxof the highest neck nodes were determined. The SUVmax-T ranged from 5.00 to 30.80 (mean: 15.37 ± 6.10) and there was no difference between SUVmax-T values for early and late stages (P = 0.99). The SUVmax-N ranged from 3.10 to 23.80 (mean: 13.23 ± 5.76). There was no correlation between SUVmax-T and SUVmax-N (r = 0.111, P = 0.532). There was no difference between the SUVmax-T and the positivity of neck lymph nodes (P = 0.169). The ability of SUVmaks-N to predict stage was obtained by a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. The area under the curve is 0.856 and the best cut-off value is 7.88. There was a good correlation between SUVmax-N and stage. While the mean SUVmax-T for the alive patients was slightly lower than that for the dead (14.65 ± 5.58 vs. 20.30 ± 7.92, P = 0.061), the difference between the groups was not statistically significant. Furthermore, there was no statistically significant difference for SUVmax-N between these two groups (P: 0.494). Cox-regression analysis showed that an increase in SUVmax-T and SUVmax-N was associated with death risk (relative risk [RR]: 1.13, P = 0.078 and RR: 1.052, P = 0.456, respectively). SUVmax-T and SUVmax-N were independent prognostic factors for survival in NPC patients. This will help the clinicians in choosing suitable candidates for more aggressive treatment modalities.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: This study was designed to investigate the effects of total parenteral nutrition (PN) using different lipid emulsions in patients undergoing major abdominal surgery. METHODS: Fifty-two patients were randomized to receive soybean oil + medium chain triglycerides (MCT) (group I), soybean oil + olive oil (group II), soybean oil + olive oil + fish oil (group III) as a lipid source. PN was started on postoperative day 1 and patients were maintained on PN for a minimum period of 4 days. Laboratory variables (CRP, prealbumin, transferrin) were measured before surgery and on postoperative days. RESULTS: Three treatment groups were included in the study. Patients in group I received long chain triglycerides (LCT) + LCT/MCT emulsion (%75 LCT + %25 LCT/MCT); Patients in group II received olive oil based emulsion (80% olive oil + 20% soybean oil, ClinOleic); Patients in group III received fish oil in addition to olive oil based emulsion (%85 ClinOleic + %15 Omegaven; Fresenius Kabi). The following 14 parameters were assessed: body weight, CRP, prealbumin, transferrin, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, total antioxidant status, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, oxidized low density lipoprotein-2, complete blood cell, international normalized ratio, D-dimer, activated partially thromboplastin time, prothrombin time. All other parameters showed no differences among the groups. CONCLUSION: The results of our trial demonstrate a potential beneficial effect of soybean oil/olive oil based lipid emulsions for use in PN regarding inflammatory response and oxidant capacity in the treatment of patients.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to compare the graft patency rates among patients who had a previous history of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) followed by coronary artery bypass grafting surgery (CABG) with the patients who had experienced CABG surgery alone. The 69 patients who were included in the study had a history of bare metal stent implantation prior to CABG (group 1). The coronary angiography results were compared with 69 patients who had a previous history of CABG (group 2). Graft patency rates of the left anterior descending artery and circumflex anastomoses are statistically significant for both groups, whereas the right coronary artery anastomoses are not statistically significant (p = 0.008; 0.009; 0.2). Graft patency rate of LIMA-LAD anastomoses was 43.9 ± 10.8 % in group 1 and 86.2 ± 6 % in group 2 for means of 60 months (p = 0.0001) and circumflex coronary artery anastomosis is 28.9 ± 0.9 % in group 1, 65.7 ± 10.8 % in group 2 (p = 0.0001) and the right coronary artery anastomosis is 37.2 ± 13.6 % in group 1, 56.4 ± 8.9 % in group 2 (p = 0.0001). The graft patency rates of coronary arteries without previous stent implantation were higher than the patients with previous stent implantation and experienced CABG. The results suggest that prior PCI may induce atherosclerotic events in the vessel that can adversely affect graft patency after surgery.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Melasma is a common chronic, acquired pigmentation disorder with a significant impact on the quality of life of patients. AIM: To investigate the etiopathogenetic factors, thyroid functions and thyroid autoimmunity in patients with melasma. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty-five women with melasma and 45 age-matched healthy women were included in the study group. A detailed history was taken from the patients including triggering factors of melasma. Serum free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), anti-thyroglobulin (AbTG) and anti-thyroid peroxidase (Ab-TPO) were measured and thyroid ultrasonography was performed for each subject. RESULTS: In 26.7% of patients, pregnancy, in 17.8%, oral contraceptive use and in 13.3%, intense sunlight exposure were the triggering factors. 17.8% of patients had a family history of melasma. FT4, TSH and AbTG levels were significantly higher in the patient group. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that a combination of factors including pregnancy, oral contraceptive use, sunlight and genetic factors often trigger melasma. Thyroid hormones and thyroid autoimmunity may also play a role in the pathogenesis which needs to be proven by further studies.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Many studies have tried to be establish a pathogenic role for human herpesvirus-6 and -8 (HHV-6, HHV-8) in malignant diseases, but whether these viruses plays a role in these pathologies remains unclear. HHV-6 and HHV-8 seropositivity were shown in a healthy population. There is no published data in Turkey about seroprevalence of these viruses. We aimed to determine the seroprevalence of HHV-6 and HHV-8 in pediatric cancer patients and to compare with healthy Turkish children's viral seroprevalence. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Ninety-three pediatric cancer patients and 43 age-matched healthy children were included in the study. All sera were screened for antibodies to HHV-6 and HHV-8 by ELISA. RESULTS: HHV-8 immunoglobulin G (IgG) was positive in 3.3% of lymphoma patients, in 4.8% of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patients, in 4.8% of retinoblastoma patients and in 7% of healthy children. There was no significant difference in HHV-8 seroprevelance between these groups. HHV-6 seroprevalence was 81% in ALL patients, 70% in lymphoma group, 81% in retinoblastoma patients and 69.8% in healthy children. Although there was no significant difference in HHV-6 prevalence between healthy children and pediatric cancer patients, HHV-6 seropositivity tended to be higher in retinoblastoma patients under age of 4 years (odds ratio: 2.925). CONCLUSION: HHV-6 seroprevalence was higher than HHV-8 seropositivity in our study. Viral studies related HHV-6 seroprevelance in retinoblastoma patients would be useful to clarify if there is any etiological association between HHV-6 and retinoblastoma.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To evaluate the presentation patterns and results of management of retinoblastoma at a tertiary care center in Ankara, Turkey, with special emphasis on globe conservation rate in unilateral and bilateral intraocular retinoblastoma. METHODS: Patients were grouped according to the International Classification of Retinoblastoma. For intraocular retinoblastoma, group E and some group D eyes underwent primary enucleation. Secondary enucleation was performed after failure of chemoreduction, focal treatments, external beam radiotherapy (EBRT), and intra-arterial chemotherapy used in various combinations. For extraocular retinoblastoma cases, treatment consisted of enucleation/exenteration or orbital biopsy, high-dose chemotherapy, and EBRT to the orbit and metastatic sites. RESULTS: During the study period from October 1998 to May 2010, 165 of 192 (85.9%) patients had intraocular disease and 27 (14.1%) patients had extraocular disease. In total, primary or secondary enucleation was performed in 70 of 94 eyes with unilateral retinoblastoma (74.5%) and in 34 of 142 eyes with bilateral retinoblastoma (23.9%). The overall globe conservation rate was 69.6%. Only one patient in the intraocular retinoblastoma group died of metastatic retinoblastoma to the central nervous system. Twenty of 27 patients (74.1%) with extraocular retinoblastoma were found to have metastasis to the central nervous system, bone, bone marrow, and/or lymph nodes. At a mean follow-up of 28.0 months (median: 12 months; range: 1 to 120 months), survival was 33.3% despite intensive treatment. CONCLUSIONS: The overall risk of enucleation was 75% in eyes with unilateral retinoblastoma and 24% in eyes with bilateral retinoblastoma. Extraocular retinoblastoma carries a 75% risk of systemic metastasis and 67% risk of death.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Tissue stiffness in liver is related to tissue composition, which is changed by cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma or metastases. Shear wave ultrasonographic elastography is a new imaging technique by which the elasticity of soft tissue can be measured quantitatively. The aim of this study was to measure the elasticity values of liver segments in healthy volunteers. METHODS: One hundred twenty seven healthy volunteers (89 women, 38 men; mean age 37, 72 ± 9.11 yr, range 17-63 yr) were examined on shear wave elastography and ultrasonography by using convex probe with a frequency of 3 MHz. Individuals with liver hepatosteatosis, cirrhosis, chronic liver disease, or focal liver lesions were excluded from the study. RESULTS: The mean elasticity values of right posterior, right anterior, left medial and left lateral segments of the liver was determined as 4 (±2.2), 3.3 (±2.1), 3.8 (±2.1), and 3.7 (±1.9) kPa for each segments, respectively. There was no significant difference in liver elasticity values between men and women. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSIONS: In this preliminary study the elasticity values of liver segments were measured by shear wave ultrasonographic elastography in normal healthy volunteers. Further studies, comparing elasticity values of normal and pathologic tissues are needed to detect the diagnostic role of this new technique.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to measure the elasticity of various tissues and report it in kilopascals. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The thyroid, submandibular, and parotid glands, masseter and gastrocnemius muscles, supraspinatus and Achilles tendons, renal cortex and pelvis, pancreas, and spleen of 127 healthy volunteers (89 women, 38 men; mean age, 37.72 ± 9.11 years; range, 17-63 years) were evaluated with shear-wave ultrasound elastography. RESULTS: The mean elasticity values were determined to be 10.97 ± 3.1 kPa for the thyroid, 10.92 ± 3.1 kPa for the submandibular glands, 10.38 ± 3.5 kPa for the parotid glands, 10.4 ± 3.7 kPa for the masseter muscle, 11.1 ± 4.1 kPa for the gastrocnemius muscle, 31.2 ± 13 kPa for the supraspinatus muscle, 51.5 ± 25.1 kPa for the Achilles tendons, 5.0 ± 2.9 kPa for the renal cortex, 23.6 ± 5.4 kPa for the renal pelvis, 4.8 ± 3 kPa for the pancreas, and 2.9 ± 1.8 kPa for the spleen. CONCLUSION: Elasticity values were determined for different tissues with shear-wave ultrasound elastography. Further studies comparing the elasticity values of normal and pathologic tissues are necessary to determine the diagnostic role of this technique.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To evaluate the role of primary transpupillary thermotherapy (TTT) in the treatment of choroidal melanocytic lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective chart review of 24 patients (24 eyes) with choroidal melanocytic lesions, including 20 choroidal melanoma and four choroidal nevus treated with primary TTT. Choroidal nevus cases treated with primary TTT either demonstrated risk factors for growth into an early melanoma or had overlying choroidal neovascularization. RESULTS: The mean initial tumor basal diameter was 6.6 (3.0-10.0) mm and the mean initial tumor thickness was 3.0 (1.0-5.0) mm. The mean number of TTT sessions was 2.5 (1-6). The mean decrease in tumor thickness was 1.2 mm (from 3.0 to 1.8 mm) at a mean follow-up of 22.7 (range 3-90) months. On the LogMar scale, visual acuity was stable at 1.0. Complications occurred in 50% of eyes. The most frequent complications were vitreous hemorrhage [5 patients (20.8%)], focal cataract [5 patients (20.8%)], iris atrophy [4 patients (16.6%)] and posterior synechia [4 patients (16.6%)]. There was no significant difference in the complication rate with respect to tumor thickness >3 mm versus tumor thickness ≤3 mm and juxtapapillary versus nonjuxtapapillary location (Fisher's exact test, P>0.05). Kaplan-Meier curves showed that 9% of eyes develop recurrence by 1 year and 27% develop recurrence by 5 years after primary TTT. Two eyes (8.3%) were enucleated because of neovascular glaucoma and one eye (4.1%) was exenterated because of extraocular tumor recurrence. Globe salvage was achieved in 21 patients (87.5%). One patient (4.1%) with extraocular tumor recurrence developed liver metastasis and expired. CONCLUSIONS: Although TTT may be useful in the treatment of small choroidal melanocytic lesions, the high complication and recurrence rates warrant close monitoring of patients after primary TTT even when a flat chorioretinal scar has been achieved.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the effects of glucosamine chondroitine sulphate (glcN-CS) on rat Achilles tendons in this experimental animal study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty Wistar albino type rats weighing 300-350 g were randomly grouped into two. Group A: Achilles tendons were tenotomized, repaired and, glcN-CS given orally. Group B: Achilles tendons were tenotomized and repaired. All the rats were fed with pellet chow. Five rats in each group were sacrificed at 4, 8, and 12 weeks interval. Tensile strength of three tendon specimen from each group were tested biomechanically and two specimen were analysed histopathologically via immunohistochemical staining and hematoxylin and eosin staining. Contralateral side Achilles tendons were also grouped and analyzed as controls (group C and D). RESULTS: Histological results showed well organized collagen formation and less inflammation in group A. Biomechanical testing showed higher tendon strength in group A at eight weeks which is not statisticaly significant (55.3±4.84N, p=0.078). Rats which were were given glcN-CS had greater tendon strength which is statisticaly significant (50.01±5.62, p=0.014). CONCLUSION: Glucoseamine chondroitine sulphate improved results of Achilles tendon healing in rats. This result might be due to decreased inflammation and stimulation of collagen synthesis. Although glcN-CS is recommended only in osteoarthritic patients to relieve symptoms and signs it can also be prefered in treatment of soft tissue injuries formed during sports activities.
