RESUMEN

Sea level rise and high-impact coastal hazards due to on-going and projected climate change dramatically affect many coastal urban areas worldwide, including those with the highest urbanization growth rates. To develop tailored coastal climate services that can inform decision makers on climate adaptation in coastal cities, a better understanding and modeling of multifaceted urban dynamics is important. We develop a coastal urban model family, where the population growth and urbanization rates are modeled in the framework of diffusion over the half-bounded and bounded domains, and apply the maximum entropy principle to the latter case. Population density distributions are derived analytically whenever possible. Steady-state wave solutions balancing the width of inhabited coastal zones, with the skewed distributions maximizing population entropy, might be responsible for the coastward migrations outstripping the demographic development of the hinterland. With appropriate modifications of boundary conditions, the developed family of diffusion models can describe coastal urban dynamics affected by climate change.

Objectives: This study aimed to determine the main barriers and reasons for non-adherence to preventive measures and treatment for type 2 diabetes mellitus among outpatients in Belarus. Methods: An anonymous questionnaire survey was conducted with 814 adults aged 18 years and over who visited outpatient health care units and hospitals in Belarus. The questionnaire was developed to analyze the perceived barriers that limit adherence to preventive measures and treatment for type 2 diabetes. Results: The proportion of respondents who reported doing daily physical activity was 53.2%, and 46.6% consumed at least 400 grams of fruit and vegetables per day. Among the 42.8% of respondents with a prescribed treatment for type 2 diabetes mellitus, 50.1% sometimes forgot to take their medicine. The specific barriers to treatment most frequently identified by survey respondents were "Financial situation" (23.5% of respondents), and "Fear of side effects" (25.2%). Those for lifestyle instructions were "Insufficient knowledge" (29.3%), "Financial situation" (27.9%), and "Lack of motivation" (21.7%). Conclusions: The study revealed that the main barriers to adherence were insufficient knowledge of diabetes and its treatment and an underestimation of the role of behavioral risk factors in health, combined with financial difficulties. We recommend that physicians should take a patient-centered approach to raising awareness of behavioral risk factors for type 2 diabetes mellitus, and suggest that the importance of adhering to preventative measures and treatment should be promoted in consultations in Belarus.

We analyzed the expression of 15 cancer/testis and four melanoma differentiation antigens in 21 metastatic melanoma cell lines using reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay. On the basis of morphological characteristics, tumor cell lines were divided into three groups with high, moderate, and low grade of differentiation. Evaluation of gene expression and melanoma cell morphology has revealed a correlation between increased expression of cancer/testis genes and differentiation grade of cancer cells. The gene expression pattern for lymph node metastases and primary tumors exhibits the distribution of expression level and frequency similar to that found for established cell lines. Nevertheless, only 60% lymph node metastases or primary tumor tissue of randomly selected patients show marked expression of the most prominent cancer/testis genes, and almost 90% lesion tissue expresses at least one of 15 cancer/testis genes.
