RESUMEN
PURPOSE: to assess prevalence of dyslipidemia in patients with ischemic heart disease (IHD) older than 75 years as well as to evaluate possible associations between serum lipids and various cardiovascular and other diseases in these patients. METHODS: We enrolled in this cross sectional study 555 hospitalized IHD patients aged 75-98 years (mean age 86.8 years, 74.5 % women). Levels of lipids (total cholesterol [TC], triglycerides [TG], low and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol [LDLC, HDLC]) were measured by enzyme method on the biochemistry analyzer Konelab 60i. RESULTS: Elevated TC; hypertriglyceridemia and elevated LDLC were observed in 13.3, 10.4 and 26.3 % of patients, respectively. In the majority of patients severity of dyslipidemia was mild. With increasing age serum levels of TC and LDLC decreased. Negative correlation between TC level and patient's age was significant (r= -0.13; p=0.001). Mean TC level was 5.43, 5.0 and 4.7 mmol / l in patients aged.

Developments and use of man-made mineral fibres are important for the progress in some technical fields. In the last years the number of man-made mineral fibres increased extraordinarily. For the medical evaluation it is necessary to determine the physico-chemical characteristics of the man-made mineral fibre dust and its biological effects in animal experiments. The results of the investigations are described.

Development of silicosis was accompanied by phase alterations in lipid peroxidation, manifested as a distinct increase at the early steps of the hydroperoxides content in lungs with their subsequent decrease below the normal level. The antioxidative activity of lipids, contrary to hydroperoxide content, was decreased at early steps and then it was increased 3.5-fold above the normal level. An interrelationship between the antioxidative activity and composition of phospholipids was found; content of phosphatidylcholine and sphingomyelin was markedly increased at early steps. The correlation observed between lipid peroxidation, composition of phospholipids and the activity of the lipid-dependent enzymes suggest an importance of impairments in lipid peroxidation for pathogenesis of silicosis.

A high antisilicotic activity of a new polymeric compound--polyethylene-piperazine N-oxide (molecular mass 5000--8000, degree of exidation--80 per cent), synthetized on the basis of aliphatic amine, was shown as against polyvinylpyridine-N-oxide in experiments conducted on albino rats with silicosis.
