Mantle cell lymphoma of the larynx: Primary case report.

INTRODUCTION: Primary laryngeal lymphomas are exceedingly rare. Only about a hundred cases have been reported. They consist mainly of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, especially of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue. We report the first case of a primary laryngeal mantle cell lymphoma. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a primary mantle cell lymphoma of the larynx in a 70-year-old North African non-smoker male. We present a detailed report of his clinical and paraclinical data as well as treatment options. CONCLUSIONS: Mantle cell lymphoma is a very aggressive lymphoma subset associated with poor prognosis. Laryngeal mantle cell lymphoma is exceedingly rare. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case to ever be reported.

Primary hydatid cyst of the thyroid gland.

Primary hydatid cyst of thyroid gland is an exceptional localization even in Morocco where echinococcal disease is endemic. A 23-year-old woman presented with multiples cystic lesions of the thyroid revealed by neck mass and dyspnea. She underwent a subtotal thyroidectomy. The diagnosis of hydatid cyst was made preoperatively and was confirmed by histological studies. Further investigation failed to identify any other evidence of systemic hydatidosis. The patient has remained asymptomatic for 24 months after surgery. The possibility of hydatid disease, though rare, should be always kept in mind, for patients with cystic lesions of the thyroid, because a needle aspiration biopsy is a potentially harmful procedure.

Primary extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma of the oral cavity.

Lymphoma is the second most common neoplasm of the head and neck after squamous cell carcinoma. Nearly 24% to 48% of non-Hodgkin lymphoma can arise in extranodal localizations and 3% to 5% of which were primarily located in the oral cavity. Waldeyer ring is the most frequently involved site. The authors report 2 cases of primary extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma of the oral cavity, not of the Waldeyer ring.

Primary oral malignant melanoma.

Malignant melanoma of the oral cavity is a rare neoplasm. It is well known for his poor prognosis and the need for an evidence-based treatment. Therapy is commonly based on surgical excision of the primary tumour, supplemented by adjuvant therapy. In this paper two new cases of primary oral melanoma are reported with a review of the literature.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma arising from pleomorphic adenoma of the soft palate.

Carcinoma arising in pleomorphic adenoma is a rare entity. A case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma in pleomorphic adenoma occurring in the soft palate of a 40-year-old woman is reported. An intraoral excision of the tumor was performed. Histopathological examination revealed high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma proliferated in pleomorphic adenoma with free surgical margin. The patient received adjuvant neck radiotherapy. She remains free of disease 16 months post-treatment.

Multiple hydatid cysts of the neck, the nasopharynx and the skull base revealing cervical vertebral hydatid disease.

Hydatid disease is caused by the parasitic tapeworm Echinococcus. This parasite in larval stage can thrive in many parts of the body, most commonly in the liver and the lung. Hydatid disease in the head and neck is uncommon and hydatid cyst presents rarely as a cervical mass. Cervical vertebral echinococcosis is rare. We report a 14-year-old girl with multiple cervical spine hydatid cysts of the C1-C2 vertebrae that spread into the surrounding paravertebral tissues and involve the nasopharynx and the skull base particularly the left jugular foramen. This process has caused a progressive swelling in the left side of the neck located in the retrostyloid compartment of the parapharyngeal space with paralysis of cranial nerves (VI, IX, X, XI, XII). The diagnosis was made based on the image obtained from CT and MRI examinations. Characteristics of this rare disease, diagnosis and treatment difficulty are discussed.
