RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the associations between pulse pressure, hypertension, and the decline in physical function in a prospective framework. STUDY DESIGN: The Healthy Aging Longitudinal Study tracked a group of Taiwanese adults aged 55 or more over an average of 6.19 years to assess pulse pressure and decline in physical function, including in handgrip strength, gait speed, and 6-min walking distance, at baseline (2009-2013) and in the second phase of assessments (2013-2020). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Pulse pressure was calculated as the difference between systolic and diastolic blood pressure values. Weakness, slowness, and low endurance were defined as decreases of ≥0.23 m/s (one standard deviation) in gait speed, ≥5.08 kg in handgrip strength, and ≥ 57.73 m in a 6-min walk, as determined from baseline to the second phase of assessment. Linear and logistic regressions were employed to evaluate the associations between pulse pressure, hypertension, and decline in physical function. RESULTS: Baseline pulse pressure was associated with future handgrip strength (beta = -0.017, p = 0.0362), gait speed (beta = -0.001, p < 0.0001), and 6-min walking distance (beta = -0.470, p < 0001). In multivariable models, only handgrip strength (beta = -0.016, p = 0.0135) and walking speed (beta = -0.001, p = 0.0042) remained significantly associated with future pulse pressure. Older adults with high systolic blood pressure (≥140 mmHg) and elevated pulse pressure (≥60 mmHg) exhibited a significantly increased risk of weakness (odds ratio: 1.30, 95 % confidence interval: 1.08-1.58), slowness (1.29, 1.04-1.59), and diminished endurance (1.25, 1.04-1.50) compared with the reference group, who exhibited systolic blood pressure of <140 mmHg and pulse pressure of <60 mmHg. CONCLUSIONS: Among older adults, pulse pressure is associated with a decline in physical function, especially in terms of strength and locomotion.

Background: Spatial disorientation in patients with mild cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer's disease (MCI due to AD) has become a subject of great interest. Medical practitioners are concerned about the serious issue of these patients who are getting lost. Therefore, the early detection of MCI due to AD is crucial. New methods: We designed virtual reality (VR) protocols to test spatial recognition abilities. Our devices mainly included the Vive Pro Eye and the Steam VR program. We tested the three groups: young cognitively unimpaired (YCU), older cognitively unimpaired (OCU) and MCI due to AD. We also administered the Cognitive Abilities Screening Instrument and the Questionnaire on Everyday Navigational Ability for comparison. Results: We adopted the testing results of 2 YCU, 3 OCU, and 4 MCI due to AD for analysis. Concerning cognitive abilities, YCU and OCU had better performance than MCI due to AD respectively. It was consistent with the recent memory and the total scores of the Cognitive Abilities Screening Instrument. Comparison with existing methods: We introduced a real-life setting, the Tzu-Chiang campus at National Cheng Kung University, into the VR environment. It allowed us to assess daily road-recognizing abilities of participants in a controlled testing environment. Conclusions: Several limitations were considered in this study, such as limited number of participants and low-quality images on the screen. Nonetheless, this device has the potential to serve as a screening tool for MCI due to AD based on its feasibility and practicality.

This study is intended to create an innovative contextual English learning environment making use of the widely used communication software, LINE ChatBot, based on the Artificial Intelligence Markup Language (AIML), in order to improve speaking and listening ability among learners. A total of 73 students were invited to participate in learning activities involving a 4-week English conversation exercise including both speaking and listening. Additionally, in order to explore the influence of competition on language acquisition, we added competition characteristics to the learning activities in the experimental group to enhance learning motivation and learning outcomes. The results showed that with the help of the LINE ChatBot contextual learning environment, the performance of both groups of students was slightly enhanced, but no significant differences were found. Meanwhile, extrinsic motivation in both the experimental and control group was improved if they spoke anonymously. That is, the contextual learning environment based on the LINE ChatBot significantly improved the learners' English speaking and listening ability. In addition, the results showed that the addition of a competition element effectively enhanced the learners' intrinsic motivation to learn English on the LINE ChatBot.

Sinusoidal wave type distortions of La0.5Sr1.5MnO4 in the low-temperature orthorhombic phase were observed using multi-beam resonant X-ray diffraction (MRXD) with (7/4 7/4 0) fractional primary diffraction. Two four-beam diffractions with opposite asymmetry were measured at 6.5545 keV and compared with the curves simulated by the dynamical X-ray diffraction theory. This approach provides the possibility of resolving the distortion modes which are perpendicular to the momentum transfer by a single azimuthal scan. The paper also demonstrates the sensitivity of MRXD profiles versus incident X-ray energy in the vicinity of the Mn K edge to the charge disproportion between the two manganese sites, reconfirming the small charge disproportion feature.

The growth of semiconductor crystals and thin films plays an essential role in industry and academic research. Considering the environmental damage caused by energy consumption during their fabrication, a simpler and cheaper method is desired. In fact, preparing semiconductor materials at lower temperatures using solution chemistry has potential in this research field. We found that solution chemistry, the physical and chemical properties of the substrate surface, and the phase diagram of the multicomponent compound semiconductor have a decisive influence on the crystal structure of the material. In this study, we used self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) to modify the silicon/glass substrate surface and effectively control the density of the functional groups and surface energy of the substrates. We first employed various solutions to grow octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS), 3-mercaptopropyl-trimethoxysilane (MPS), and mixed OTS-MPS SAMs. The surface energy can be adjusted between 24.9 and 50.8 erg/cm(2). Using metal sulfide precursors in appropriate concentrations, AgIn5S8 crystals can be grown on the modified substrates without any post-thermal treatment. We can easily adjust the nucleation in order to vary the density of AgIn5S8 crystals. Our current process can achieve AgIn5S8 crystals of a maximum of 1 µm in diameter and a minimum crystal density of approximately 0.038/µm(2). One proof-of-concept experiment demonstrated that the material prepared from this low temperature process showed positive photocatalytic activity. This method for growing crystals can be applied to the green fabrication of optoelectronic materials.
