RESUMEN

Automatic coronary artery stenosis grading plays an important role in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease. Due to the difficulty of learning the informative features from varying grades of stenosis, it is still a challenging task to identify coronary artery stenosis from coronary CT angiography (CCTA). In this paper, we propose a context-aware deep network (CADN) for coronary artery stenosis classification. The proposed method integrates 3D CNN with Transformer to improve the feature representation of coronary artery stenosis in CCTA. We evaluate the proposed method on a multicenter dataset (APOLLO study with NCT05509010). Experimental results show that our proposed method can achieve the accuracy of 0.84, 0.83, and 0.86 for stenosis diagnosis on the lesion, artery, and patient levels, respectively.

RESUMEN

The adsorptive removal performance of strontium (Sr) through bio-mineralization metabolism under various parameters was evaluated in this study. The primary mechanism of bio-mineralization used in this study was the urea hydrolysis process through bacterial enzymatic catalysis. Bacillus sp, which was isolated from river sediment, was used as a ureolytic bacteria. Various environmental conditions were set as different initial concentrations of Sr (10, 50, 100, 200, and 500 mg/L), and various ratios of Mg/Ca (4, 2, 1, 0.5, and 0.25). The concentrations of Sr2+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ in the solution of the batch experiment were measured to identify the bio-mineralization performance and the removal rate of Sr. In addition, the main Sr removal mechanism of ureolytic bacteria was identified. As a result, for Sr removal of bacteria, the bio-mineralization mechanism was more predominant than the adsorption of Sr. The rapid growth and high nucleation site production were observed when the initial concentration of Sr2+ increased and the Mg/Ca ratio was lowered, resulting in high biomineralization performance and Sr removal rate. The main phases of carbonate minerals formed in the presence of Sr, Ca, and Mg were SrCO3 and SrCa(CO3)2. Mg2+ could retard the bacterial growth and participate in the formation of carbonate minerals, when a large amount of Mg2+ was present. Furthermore, the desorption rate of Sr2+ from bacterial pastes containing the carbonate minerals increased as the concentration of HCl increased, although the carbonate minerals were in a stable state.

RESUMEN

Jogaejeot, seasoned Venerupis philippinarum, is a traditional Korean fermented food, and hepatitis A virus (HAV) can be transmitted through contaminated food, especially bivalve shellfish, causing acute gastroenteritis worldwide. Here, we carried out a phylogenetic analysis to identify and characterize HAV strains in jogaejeot samples associated with hepatitis A (HA) outbreaks in Seoul, South Korea, in 2019. The HAV strains were identified using blast and molecular analysis of the amplified HAV VP1-P2B genome region. The HAV strains identified in the five jogaejeot samples shared at least 99% sequence identity, were all classified as genotype IA and were most closely related to strains that are widespread in East Asia. These results support a link between the consumption of jogaejeot and the HA outbreaks observed in 2019 in Seoul. In addition, they indicate a need for more stringent enforcement of food safety regulations for the shellfish industry, especially against HAV, and the value of widespread vaccination.

RESUMEN

Flexible electronic devices have gained significant interest due to their different potential applications. Herein, we report highly flexible, stretchable, and sensitive sensors made of sprayed CNT layer, sandwiched between two polymer layers. A facile fabrication process was employed in which the CNT solution was directly sprayed onto a patterned bottom polymer layer, above which a second polymer layer was casted to get a sandwiched composite structure. Varying amounts of CNT solution (i.e., 10, 25, 40, 70, and 100 mL) were sprayed to get conductive CNT layers of different thicknesses/densities. The physical characteristics of the conductive CNT layers were studied through SEM and optical images. The starting electrical resistance values (without strain) as well as the changes in electrical resistance against human body motions were monitored. The synthesized samples exhibited good response against finger and wrist bending. The conductivity of the samples increased with increase of CNT solution volume while the sensitivity followed the inverse relation, suggesting that the sensors with controlled sensitivity could be fabricated for targeted strain ranges using the proposed method.

RESUMEN

The feasibility of carbonation curing of ternary blend Portland cement-metakaolin-limestone was investigated. Portland cement was substituted by the combination of metakaolin and limestone at levels of 15%, 30%, and 45% by the mass. The ternary blends were cured with four different combinations of ambient and carbonation curing. The mechanical property, CO2 uptake, and mineralogical variations of the ternary blend pastes were investigated by means of compressive strength test, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray diffractometry. In addition, volume of permeable voids and sorptivity of the ternary blends were also presented to provide a fundamental idea of the pore characteristics of the blends. The test results showed that the increasing amount of metakaolin and limestone enhanced the CO2 uptake, reaching 20.7% for the sample with a 45% cement replacement level at 27 d of carbonation. Meanwhile, the compressive strength of the samples was reduced up to 65% upon excessive incorporation of metakaolin and limestone. The samples with a replacement level of 15% exhibited a comparable strength and volume of permeable voids to those of the sample without substitution, proving that the ternary blend Portland cement-metakaolin-limestone can be a viable option toward the development of eco-friendly binders.

RESUMEN

The present study evaluated the self-healing efficiency and mechanical properties of mortar specimens incorporating a bio-carrier as a self-healing agent. The bio-carrier was produced by immobilizing ureolytic bacteria isolated from seawater in bottom ash, followed by surface coating with cement powder to prevent loss of nutrients during the mixing process. Five types of specimens were prepared with two methods of incorporating bacteria, and were water cured for 28 days. To investigate the healing ratio, the specimens with predefined cracks were treated by applying a wet-dry cycle in three different conditions, i.e., seawater, tap water, and air for 28 days. In addition, a compression test and a mercury intrusion porosimetry analysis of the specimens were performed to evaluate their physico-mechanical properties. The obtained results showed that the specimen incorporating the bio-carrier had higher compressive strength than the specimen incorporating vegetative cells. Furthermore, the highest healing ratio was observed in specimens incorporating the bio-carrier. This phenomenon could be ascribed by the enhanced bacterial viability by the bio-carrier.

RESUMEN

Osteoporosis is commonly underdiagnosed and undertreated. We performed a clinical audit to assess the risk factors and clinical care for osteoporosis among older persons who attended medical clinic during a 4-week period in August 2013. There was a total of 128 patients with a mean age of 73.1±5.8 years, and 20.3%. had a history of fall. Fracture Risk Assessment Tool (FRAX) scores assessment showed 14.2% and 68.8% had a 10-year risk of major osteoporotic and hip fractures respectively. Only 6.3% underwent Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and 73.4% did not receive any preventive treatment for osteoporosis. Older persons attending medical clinic at high risk of osteoporosis fractures did not receive appropriate screening and treatment. There is a need to improve the suboptimal care for bone health among older persons.

RESUMEN

The structural evolution of a binder gel in alkali-activated cements exposed to accelerated leaching conditions is investigated for the first time. Samples incorporating fly ash and/or slag were synthesized and were exposed to electrically accelerated leaching by applying a current density of 5 A/m2. The leaching behavior of the samples greatly depended on the binder gel formed in the samples. The N-A-S-H type gel abundant in fly ash-rich samples showed some extent of dissolution upon accelerated leaching, while slag-rich samples underwent hydration of the anhydrous slag after leaching. The obtained results are discussed in view of the degradation of the binder gel induced by accelerated leaching, and their potential performance under repository conditions where groundwater-induced leaching is the main durability concern.

RESUMEN

Chitosan-polyethyleneimine with calcium chloride as ionic cross-linker (CsPC) was synthesized as a new kind of adsorbent using a simple, green and cost-effective technique. The adsorption properties of the adsorbent for Acid Red 88 (AR88) dye, as a model analyte, were investigated in a batch system as the function of solution pH (pH 3-12), initial AR88 concentration (50-500 mg L-1), contact time (0-24 h), and temperature (30-50 °C). Results showed that the adsorption process obeyed the pseudo-first order kinetic model and the adsorption rate was governed by both intra-particle and liquid-film mechanism. Equilibrium data were well correlated with the Freundlich isotherm model, with the calculated maximum adsorption capacity (qm) of 1000 mg g-1 at 30 °C. The findings underlined CsPC to be an effective and efficient adsorbent, which can be easily synthesized via one-step process with promising prospects for the removal of AR88 or any other similar dyes from the aqueous solutions.

RESUMEN

The solidification and stabilization of calcium carbide residue (CCR) using granulated blast furnace slag was investigated in this study. CCR binding in hydrated slag was explored by X-ray diffraction, 29Si and 27Al magic angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and thermodynamic calculations. Mercury intrusion porosimetry and and compressive strength tests assessed the microstructure and mechanical properties of the mixtures of slag and CCR. C-A-S-H gel, ettringite, hemicarbonate, and hydrotalcite were identified as the main phases in the mixture of slag and CCR. The maximum CCR uptake by slag and the highest volume of precipitated solid phases were reached when CCR loading in slag is 7.5% by mass of slag, according to the thermodynamic prediction. This feature is also experimentally observed in the microstructure, which showed an increase in the pore volume at higher CCR loading.

RESUMEN

Magnetic damping is a key metric for emerging technologies based on magnetic nanoparticles, such as spin torque memory and high-resolution biomagnetic imaging. Despite its importance, understanding of magnetic dissipation in nanoscale ferromagnets remains elusive, and the damping is often treated as a phenomenological constant. Here, we report the discovery of a giant frequency-dependent nonlinear damping that strongly alters the response of a nanoscale ferromagnet to spin torque and microwave magnetic field. This damping mechanism originates from three-magnon scattering that is strongly enhanced by geometric confinement of magnons in the nanomagnet. We show that the giant nonlinear damping can invert the effect of spin torque on a nanomagnet, leading to an unexpected current-induced enhancement of damping by an antidamping torque. Our work advances the understanding of magnetic dynamics in nanoscale ferromagnets and spin torque devices.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Reference intervals (RIs) are essential tool for proper interpretation of results. There is a global trend towards implementing common RIs to avoid confusion and enhance patient management across different laboratories. However, local practices with respect to RIs lack harmonisation. METHODS: We have conducted the first local survey regarding RIs for 14 general chemistry analytes in 10 chemical pathology laboratories that employ four different analytical platforms (Abbott Architect, Beckman Coulter AU, Roche Cobas, and Siemens Dimension EXL). Analytical bias was assessed by an inter-laboratory results comparison of external quality assurance programmes. RESULTS: Sufficient inter-laboratory and inter-platform agreement regarding the 10 analytes (albumin, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, chloride, gamma-glutamyl transferase, phosphate, potassium, sodium, total protein, and urea) were demonstrated. However, the RIs were heterogeneous across all laboratories, with percentage differences of the upper RI value of up to 47% for aspartate aminotransferase (absolute difference of 16 U/L), 29% for urea (1.8 mmol/L), and 18% for potassium (0.8 mmol/L). The percentage difference between lower RI values was up to 24% for urea (0.6 mmol/L), 22% for phosphate (0.16 mmol/L), and 8% for total protein (5 g/L). The coefficients of variation of the upper RI values of potassium and sodium were 1.2 times and 1.0 times of their corresponding between-subject biological variation, respectively, representing unnecessary variations that are overlooked and unchecked in current practice. CONCLUSIONS: We recommend the use of common RIs for general chemistry analytes in Hong Kong to prevent interpreter confusion, improve electronic data transfer, and unite laboratory practice. This is the first local study on this topic, and our data can lay the groundwork for increasing harmonisation of RIs across more laboratory tests.

RESUMEN

Blast furnace slag, an industrial by-product, is emerging as a potential raw material to synthesize hydroxyapatite and zeolite. In this study, the effects of temperature on the hydrothermal synthesis of hydroxyapatite-zeolite from blast furnace slag were investigated. Specimens were synthesized at different temperatures (room temperature, 50, 90, 120, or 150 °C). The synthesized specimens were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively via X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), BET/BJH, and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive using X-ray analysis (SEM/EDX). It was found that the hydroxyapatite phase was synthesized at all the reaction temperatures, while faujasite type zeolite appeared in the specimens synthesized at 90 and 120 °C. Moreover, faujasite was replaced by hydroxysodalite in the specimens synthesized at 150 °C. Additionally, the crystals of the hydroxyapatite tended to become larger and total crystallinity increased as the reaction temperature increased.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) share common risk factors. They could therefore be expressed in a single patient. However, the prevalence, clinical characteristics and prognosis of individuals with comorbid IPF and COPD are not known. METHOD From 2003 to 2007, the Korean Interstitial Lung Disease Study Group created a register for idiopathic interstitial pneumonia using 2002 ATS/ERS (American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society) criteria. Of the 1546 IPF patients assessed, 143 had decreased lung function consistent with COPD (IPF-COPD). COPD was diagnosed based on age (≥40 years) and pulmonary function (forced expiratory volume in 1 sec [FEV1]/forced vital capacity [FVC] ratio < 0.7). RESULTS The median age of the IPF-COPD group was 71.0 years (interquartile range 66.0-76.0); most patients were male (88.1%). FVC (%) was significantly higher in the IPF-COPD group; however, FEV1 (%) was significantly lower in the IPF-COPD group (P < 0.001). Diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide (DLCO) was not significantly different between the two groups. In survival analysis, age and FVC (%), but not COPD, were significantly associated with prognosis (respectively P = 0.003, 0.001 and 0.401). COPD severity was also not related to prognosis (P = 0.935). CONCLUSION The prevalence of IPF-COPD was estimated to be ∼9.2% among all IPF patients; prognosis of patients with IPF-COPD was not worse than those with IPF alone. .

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To compare the prevalence of and trends in drug resistance in extra-pulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) and pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). METHODS: We retrospectively analysed the results of phenotypic drug susceptibility testing (DST) in culture-confirmed TB patients from January 2010 to December 2014 at seven university hospitals in South Korea. RESULTS: Of 5599 patients included, 320 (5.7%) were classified in the EPTB group and 5279 (94.3%) in the PTB group. The proportion of EPTB among all TB cases had gradually increased from 2010 to 2014 (P = 0.004). Among both new and previously treated patients, there were no significant differences in rates of resistance to any kind of anti-tuberculosis drug between the EPTB and PTB groups. The trends in drug resistance rates among new patients were similar in both the EPTB and PTB groups. The rates of multidrug-resistant TB among new patients gradually decreased in both groups (P = 0.031 and P = 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of and trends in drug resistance among new patients are not significantly different between patients with EPTB and those with PTB.

RESUMEN

Mesenchymal stem cell therapy is a promising candidate for the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). To exert their efficacy fully, mesenchymal stem cells must infiltrate efficiently into the lesion sites. Here, we examined the role of CXCR3 in mesenchymal stem cell infiltration into the kidney of MRL. Faslpr mice, which highly expressed CXCL10. The phenotypes, production of immunosuppressive mediators, and capacity to inhibit T and B cells of CXCR3-deficient mesenchymal stem cells were similar to those of wild-type mesenchymal stem cells. However, they showed less infiltration into the nephritic kidney, less conjugation with endothelial cells and weaker MMP-9 expression than did wild-type mesenchymal stem cells. Consequently, CXCR3-deficient mesenchymal stem cells did not ameliorate lupus symptoms in MRL. Faslpr mice in comparison with wild-type mesenchymal stem cells. In summary, our data suggest that upregulation of CXCR3 in mesenchymal stem cells will be a good strategy to increase their infiltration into the kidney, which will improve therapeutic outcomes in SLE.

RESUMEN

The present study proposes a robust one-step hydrothermal treatment method for synthesis of high strength geopolymer-supported zeolites utilizing industrial by-products (fly ash and blast furnace slag), which can be potentially used as bulk-type solid adsorbents. The results revealed that the geopolymer-supported zeolites, possessing distinct strengths, zeolite phases (Na-P1, Na-chabazite, and analcime) and pore features depending on the mix design and synthesis conditions, can be easily synthesized employing the proposed one-step method. The geopolymer-supported zeolites exhibited the characteristics of mesoporous materials which are typically desired for commercial adsorbents. The maximum adsorption capacity for Pb2+ was found to be about 37.9 mg/g which is relatively higher than the other bulk-type adsorbents reported for Pb2+ to date. Since industrial by-products are used for synthesis of these materials, it will help in reducing the environmental hazards associated with the permanent disposal of such by-products, with an added advantage that these bulk-type solid adsorbents can be easily retrieved after use unlike granular adsorbents.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Dryness-related heel skin problems are common; however, there are very few studies about heel skin dryness. The objective of this study was to develop new assessment methods for evaluating heel skin dryness, to clarify the characteristics associated with heal skin dryness, and assess the effectiveness of moisturizer use according to dryness severity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We investigated the heel skin of 150 Korean women (aged 20-78 years). Heel skin images were taken using a DSLR camera and the distribution or severity of flakes, scaling, cracking, and fissures were visually assessed. Skin properties such as hydration, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), amount of dead skin cells, and efficacy of moisturizer were evaluated according to heel xerosis grade. Furthermore, as conventional evaluation methods for desquamation are not appropriate for heel skin, we developed new techniques using binarization of magnified images. RESULTS: Skin hydration tended to decrease and TEWL tended to increase as heel dryness grade increased. The amount of dead skin cells increased with increasing dryness grade using the new technique. Subjects in the severe dryness group achieved similar hydration levels as normal subjects at baseline after 3 hours of moisturizer application. CONCLUSION: Our new methods of visually classifying heel dryness and quantifying dead skin cells using magnified images effectively evaluated heel skin properties. As heel skin is prone to dryness, daily repetitive application of moisturizer might be helpful for hydrating dry heel skin, and ultimately preventing complications.
