RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Venous malformations (VMs) are distinguished from lymphatic malformations (LMs) when specific diagnostic skin lesions are present. In the deep type, this is difficult by clinico-radiologic evaluation alone. We aimed to investigate the usefulness of lymphatic vessel endothelial cell (LEC) markers for the differential diagnosis of the deep VMs and LMs. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted based on the medical records of patients with VMs and LMs who underwent biopsy with both D2-40 and PROX-1 immunohistochemistry. We compared the initial clinico-radiological diagnosis with the final pathological diagnosis and identified which ones showed a difference. RESULTS: From 261 patients who had VMs and LMs, 111 remained after the exclusion of those who showed definite surface diagnostic features. After pathological diagnosis with the expressions of D2-40 and PROX-1, 38 of 111 (34.2%) patients' final diagnoses were changed. Among these 38 cases, diagnosis was not changed by D2-40 positivity alone, but changed by PROX-1 positivity alone (52.6%) or by both (47.4%). The diagnostic changes were more frequent in the deep category (43.7%) than in the superficial category. CONCLUSIONS: Identifying the expression of D2-40, and especially PROX-1, in the differential diagnosis of VMs and LMs may provide important treatment guidelines and understanding their natural course.

RESUMEN

Background: Systemic artery to pulmonary artery fistula (SA-PAF) is an uncommon disease which is often incidentally diagnosed during evaluation of hemoptysis patients. The aim of our study was to describe the cases of SA-PAF in our institution and to report the correlating clinical and radiological findings. Methods: We reviewed 231 chest computed tomography (CT) scans performed in our institution due to hemoptysis from January 2020 to February 2023. In patients diagnosed with SA-PAF had their electronic medical records and CT images analyzed. Results: In 231 patients, 19 (8.2%) of them had SA-PAF findings which was characterized by a peripheral nodular soft tissue opacity in the subpleural lung and traceable vascular structure in continuity with one or more peripheral pulmonary artery branches in CT. Etiology of each patient was categorized as either congenital (7, 36.8%), and acquired (12, 63.2%). The origins of SA-PAFs were 16 intercostal, two anterior mediastinal, and one costocervical artery. Eight of 19 patients did not show any associated intralobar imaging abnormalities, while bronchiectasis, cellular bronchiolitis, centrilobular emphysema, and pleura effusion were observed in 11 patients. Conclusions: SA-PAF is a benign vascular anomaly which is frequently overlooked when evaluating hemoptysis by either clinician or radiologists but is an important factor in the differential diagnosis of patients with hemoptysis.

RESUMEN

Bronchial artery aneurysm (BAA) is a rare disease, and multiple aneurysms of a single bronchial artery are rarer. Regardless of the size of the lesion, it is at risk of rupture and can cause massive hemoptysis or severe pain. We report a rare case of bronchial artery embolization (BAE) of multiple aneurysms of a single bronchial artery. During medical examination, a 64-year-old female was diagnosed with multiple BAAs and endobronchial lesions in the right lower lung on CT 10 years prior to presentation to our hospital. Further evaluation of the lesions was recommended; however, the patient was lost to follow-up. The patient complained of dyspnea and visited our hospital, and the size of the BAA had increased on CT. BAE was done successfully using N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate and detachable coils. Follow up CT after BAE showed significant decrease in extent of inflammatory lesion in the right lung.

RESUMEN

Vascular malformations, the abnormal development of blood vessels, are a rare set of congenital anomalies. The sociodemographic factors associated with vascular malformations in pediatric patients are poorly understood. This study examined sociodemographic factors of 352 patients presenting to a single vascular anomaly center from July 2019 to September 2022. Characteristics such as race, ethnicity, sex, age at presentation, degree of urbanization, and insurance status were recorded. This data was analyzed by comparing the different types of vascular malformations, including arteriovenous malformation, capillary malformation, venous malformation (VM), lymphatic malformation (LM), lymphedema, and overgrowth syndrome. Patients were primarily white, not Hispanic or Latino, female, had private health insurance, and were from the most urban setting. No differences in sociodemographic factors were found among the different vascular malformations except patients with VM presented at a later age than patients with LM or overgrowth syndrome. This study provides novel insight into the sociodemographic factors of pediatric patients presenting with vascular malformations and indicates a need for their improved recognition for the timely initiation of treatment.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of transarterial bleomycin sclerotherapy of early-stage facial arteriovenous malformation (AVM). METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of patients who underwent bleomycin sclerotherapy for early-stage AVM (Schobinger stage I or II) in a single-referral vascular anomalies center. Bleomycin was slowly infused transarterially with flow control techniques to prolong the effects of bleomycin. Procedure details, AVM characteristics, and previous treatments were reviewed. Initial therapeutic outcomes were determined by 5 categories using both radiological and clinical findings in a 6-month follow-up. Further follow-up outcomes were reviewed to evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of the treatment. Procedure-related complications were also analyzed. RESULTS: Nineteen patients (mean age 22.4 ± 14.0 years, 14 females) with 31 sessions of sclerotherapies were enrolled. All AVMs were Cho-Do classification type III (type IIIa [n = 13], type IIIb [n = 2], and type IIIa+b [n = 4]). Patients received a mean of 1.6 (range, 1-4) sessions of treatment. The mean cumulative bleomycin dose was 23,600 IU ± 14,500 (range, 8000 - 60,000 IU). The results showed that 14 patients (74%) were responsive to transarterial bleomycin sclerotherapy, including complete response (n = 3), marked improvement (n = 1), and partial improvement (n = 10). The remaining 5 (26%) showed no response. During a mean follow-up of 32.6 months, 5 (26%) showed slight progression compared with 6-month outcomes and 14 (74%) were stable. There were only 2 minor complications [hyperpigmentation (n = 1) and cellulitis (n = 1)]. CONCLUSIONS: Transarterial bleomycin sclerotherapy using flow control techniques can be a safe and feasible alternative treatment option for facial early-stage AVM.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to determine the color stability of 3D printed resin according to the post-curing conditions (polymerization conditions and temperature). Specimens were post-polymerized under different conditions of oxygen inhibition, such as on glycerin immersion (GLY), medium-low vacuum environment (VA), and oxygen contact (CON, the control group), and temperature (35 °C, 60 °C, and 80 °C). The degree of conversion (DC), water sorption (Wsp) and solubility (Wsl), surface roughness (Ra) were measured. Additionally, surface free energy (SFE), pH values of colorants were measured. Grape juice (grape), coffee, and curry were used as the colorants, and distilled water (DW) was used as a control. And the color value was measured before and after immersion using a spectrophotometer. Then, Calculated the color change. For statistical methods, The Shapiro-Wilk test performed to check for normality revealed that the data presented a normal distribution (p>0.05). ΔE values were analyzed using three-way ANOVA. DC, Wsp, Wsl, SFE, and Ra were analyzed using two-way ANOVA. To confirm the linear correlation, Pearson's correlation coefficient was determined. The threshold for significance (p) was set at 0.05 (95% confidence interval) for all tests. DC was the highest at 80 °C in the GLY group (95.08 ± 4.88%). And Wsl decreased with increasing temperature, and was lowest at 80 °C in the GLY group (0.46 ± 0.30 um/mm3). After the colorants were immersed for 30 days, as the temperature increased, ΔE decreased in the GLY group but not in the VA and CON groups, and was the lowest at 80 °C in the GLY group: (DW, 0.95 ± 0.45 [mean± SD]; grape, 6.45± 0.69; coffee, 4.50± 0.56; curry, 9.37± 1.40). There was also a significant inverse relation between DC and ΔE. A significant inverse relation was found between Wsl and DC, and a significant positive correlation was found between Wsl and ΔE. Wsp, SFE, and Ra did not affect color stability. In the post-polymerization process, increasing the temperature and GLY were effective in reducing ΔE, which was lowest at 80 °C in the GLY group. It was also observed that a complex mechanism between the DC, Wsl of 3D printed resin affects ΔE of the resin.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To evaluate factors that contribute to adverse events (AEs) after embolization of venous malformations (VMs) using sclerosing agents. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of patients who underwent direct puncture embolization of VMs with a sclerosing agent and adjunctive techniques, also termed as sclerotherapy, from 2016 to 2021 was performed. Three-hundred one embolizations in 137 patients (median age, 19.0 years; interquartile range, 12.8-31.5 years) were evaluated. The VM characteristics and embolization details were analyzed. Anticoagulation was also evaluated based on D-dimer levels. Cutaneous and noncutaneous AEs were analyzed. The AEs were categorized using Society of Interventional Radiology guidelines. RESULTS: VMs involving tissue planes were subcutaneous (n = 104), intramuscular (n = 84), and combined (n = 113). Overlying skin involvement was observed in 56% of the patients. Sodium tetradecyl sulfate was mainly used (83%). Periprocedural anticoagulation was used in 9% of the patients. Most AEs were minor (30/301, 9.7%), and only 1.7% (5/301) were major (21 cutaneous and 14 noncutaneous AEs). Age below 18 years (odds ratio, 4.4502; 95% confidence interval, 1.5607-12.6890; P = .0052) and overlying skin involvement (odds ratio, 7.1794; 95% confidence interval, 1.6226-31.7656; P = .0094) were factors associated with cutaneous AEs. All noncutaneous AEs developed in patients with intramuscular VMs; however, this association was not statistically significant. There was no severe hematologic AE or permanent consequence. CONCLUSIONS: The overall AE rate after VM embolization was 11.6%; however, major AEs were rare (1.7%). Cutaneous AEs were associated with young age and overlying skin involvement. All noncutaneous AEs developed in patients with intramuscular VMs.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility of single-shot whole thoracic time-resolved MR angiography (TR-MRA) to identify the feeding arteries of pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs) and reperfusion of the lesion after embolization in patients with multiple PAVMs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nine patients (8 females and 1 male; age range, 23-65 years) with a total of 62 PAVMs who underwent percutaneous embolization for multiple PAVMs and were subsequently followed up using TR-MRA and CT obtained within 6 months from each other were retrospectively reviewed. All imaging analyses were performed by two independent readers blinded to clinical information. The visibility of the feeding arteries on maximum intensity projection (MIP) reconstruction and multiplanar reconstruction (MPR) TR-MRA images was evaluated by comparing them to CT as a reference. The accuracy of TR-MRA for diagnosing reperfusion of the PAVM after embolization was assessed in a subgroup with angiographic confirmation. The reliability between the readers in interpreting the TR-MRA results was analyzed using kappa (κ) statistics. RESULTS: Feeding arteries were visible on the original MIP images of TR-MRA in 82.3% (51/62) and 85.5% (53/62) of readers 1 and 2, respectively. Using the MPR, the rates increased to 93.5% (58/62) and 95.2% (59/62), respectively (κ = 0.760 and 0.792, respectively). Factors for invisibility were the course of feeding arteries in the anteroposterior plane, proximity to large enhancing vessels, adjacency to the chest wall, pulsation of the heart, and small feeding arteries. Thirty-seven PAVMs in five patients had angiographic confirmation of reperfusion status after embolization (32 occlusions and 5 reperfusions). TR-MRA showed 100% (5/5) sensitivity and 100% (32/32, including three cases in which the feeding arteries were not visible on TR-MRA) specificity for both readers. CONCLUSION: Single-shot whole thoracic TR-MRA with MPR showed good visibility of the feeding arteries of PAVMs and high accuracy in diagnosing reperfusion after embolization. Single-shot whole thoracic TR-MRA may be a feasible method for the follow-up of patients with multiple PAVMs.

RESUMEN

Arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is characterized by high-flow blood vessels connecting arteries and veins without capillaries. This disease shows increased angiogenesis and a pathophysiological hypoxic environment in proximal tissues. Here, we analyzed the effects of hypoxia on angiogenesis in the endothelial cells (ECs) of AVM and normal tissues. ECs from human normal and AVM tissues were evaluated using immunocytochemistry with CD31. In vitro tube formation under hypoxia was tested in both ECs using Matrigel. The relative expression of angiogenesis-related genes was measured using real-time PCR. Under normoxia, CD31 was significantly higher in AVM ECs (79.23 ± 0.65%) than in normal ECs (74.15 ± 0.70%). Similar results were observed under hypoxia in AVM ECs (63.85 ± 1.84%) and normal ECs (60.52 ± 0.51%). In the tube formation test under normoxic and hypoxic conditions, the junction count and total vessel length were significantly greater in AVM ECs than normal ECs. Under both normoxia and hypoxia, the angiogenesis-related gene FSTL1 showed a significantly higher expression in AVM ECs than in normal ECs. Under hypoxia, CSPG4 expression was significantly lower in AVM ECs than in normal ECs. Accordingly, the angiogenic effect was increased in AVM ECs compared with that in normal ECs. These results provide a basic knowledge for an AVM treatment strategy.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of bleomycin infusion sclerotherapy using a syringe pump in microcystic and mixed (microcystic components with the presence of a cyst over 1 cm) lymphatic malformations (LMs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who received bleomycin sclerotherapy with a syringe pump for microcystic or mixed LMs were reviewed. Cystic components of LMs were accessed under sonographic guidance, followed by injection of an opacified bleomycin solution using a syringe pump (infusion rate, 10-20 mL/h) under fluoroscopic guidance. Imaging outcomes were graded as complete (> 90% size reduction), partial (25-90%), or no response (< 25%). Clinical outcomes and procedure-related complications were also reviewed. RESULTS: Forty-nine patients with 81 sclerotherapies were analyzed. The mean age was 17 years (range 0.1-65 y). Thirty-one (63%) patients had microcystic LMs, and 18 (37%) had mixed. A mean of 1.7 sessions (range 1-4) of sclerotherapy was performed using a mean cumulative dose of bleomycin of 10.8 U (range 1.5-39 U). The mean infusion time was 39 min (range 14-130 min). Regarding imaging outcomes, there was a complete response in 29% (n = 14), a partial response in 57% (n = 28), and no response in 14% (n = 7). Regarding clinical outcomes, there was a complete response in 39% (n = 19), a partial response in 51% (n = 25), and no response in 10% (n = 5). According to the CIRSE classification, no major complications were identified. CONCLUSIONS: Bleomycin slow infusion sclerotherapy provides gradual filling of sclerosant to target microcystic components. This technique is safe and feasible for the management of microcystic or mixed LMs. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 4, Case series.

RESUMEN

An inflammatory pseudotumor is a benign disease characterized by tumor-like lesions consisting of inflammatory cells including plasma cells and fibrous tissue. Recently, some inflammatory pseudotumor cases proved to be a form of Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD). This novel clinical entity, recognized as a fibroinflammatory condition, is characterized by lymphoplasmacytic infiltration with a predominance of IgG4-positive plasma cells, storiform fibrosis, and often elevated serum IgG4 concentrations. We report a case of IgG4-RD in the form of an inflammatory pseudotumor in the liver with combined sclerosing cholangitis. We recommend that for diagnosing IgG4-RD accurately, it is important to obtain adequate tissue samples and follow-up the lesion in clinical practice.

RESUMEN

The photosensitive resin used in additive manufacturing is cured by free radical polymerization by UV irradiation. However, undesired reaction with oxygen during polymerization inhibits polymerization and results in an under-cured polymer. Therefore, in this study, the hypothesis that successful oxygen shielding in the post-polymerization step could affect the properties of the final polymer was tested. 3D printed specimens using denture base resin were post polymerized either by immersion in glycerin for oxygen shielding (GL group) or placed in a medium-low vacuum chamber at 5 × 10-2 Torr (VA group). Specimens cured with no additional conditioning served as the control (CON group). To consider the effect of temperature, all groups were additionally compared with 80 °C and without an increase in temperature (room temperature) during post-polymerization. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to measure the monomer conversion ratios between different groups. In addition, the mechanical properties were quantified by the micro-hardness, flexural strength, and elasticity of the surface, and the water sorption and solubility. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) was conducted to observe the trend in storage and loss modulus between the groups against temperature. Differences in the surface as a function of the post-polymerization conditions were qualitatively observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The result shows that oxygen shielding during post-polymerization showed an increase in the degree of conversion (DC) and hardness of the resin surface. The highest DC was observed for GL group specimens at both room temperature and 80 °C. This result was confirmed by the SEM micrographs of the resin surface, where the interface between the layers of the GL group structure becomes more robust. However, a difference was observed between the samples prepared at room temperature and 80 °C. The flexural modulus was highest in the GL group, followed by the VA group, and lowest in the CON group at 80 °C. No difference in water absorption was observed for any groups, but high water solubility was observed in the GL group at room temperature. Overall, more significant differences in the properties were observed for the samples post-polymerized at 80 °C than at room temperature. The results of DMA analysis to determine the glass transition temperature showed a similar trend in all groups, and the storage modulus and loss rate obtained in the same experiment decreased in the order of GL, CON, and VA. In conclusion, an oxygen shielded post-polymerization environment at elevated temperature effectively improves the mechanical properties of photosensitive resin.

RESUMEN

Vascular plugs have been increasingly used because they have lower recanalization rates than coil embolization in pulmonary arteriovenous malformation (PAVM) embolization. To deliver the vascular plug close to the PAVM, a large-diameter catheter should be advanced into the feeding pulmonary artery, which carries a risk of vascular damage. Fifty-three-year-old women was admitted to our hospital for embolization of a single PAVM. Pulmonary angiography revealed a simple PAVM with a tortuous, small feeding artery in the right middle lobe, and feeding artery negotiation was attempted using a 5-Fr headhunter-type catheter to deliver the vascular plug. However, unintentional arterial perforation occurred suddenly when the guide wire was withdrawn after the catheter was advanced to the feeding artery adjacent to the sac. Immediate embolization using a vascular plug and microcoils at the proximal site of the perforation was performed to stop both PAVM shunt flow and bleeding. To prevent such a catheter-induced complication, it is necessary to select a diagnostic catheter with appropriate stiffness and angle and to switch to a small-diameter delivery system depending on the situation.

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT: Percutaneous transhepatic gallbladder drainage (PTGBD) is an alternative treatment option for acute cholecystitis. However, the disease may recur after PTGBD catheter removal. This study aimed to evaluate the role of endoscopic sphincterotomy and other risk factors in reducing the recurrence of cholecystitis. We retrospectively analyzed data from 1088 patients who underwent PTGBD for cholecystitis at Kyungpook National University Hospital, Republic of Korea, between January 2011 and April 2018.A total of 115 patients were enrolled in the study. The recurrence rate of cholecystitis was 17.4% (n = 20) during a median follow-up period of 1159 (range, 369-2774) days. Endoscopic biliary sphincterotomy did not significantly affect the recurrence rate of cholecystitis (P = .561). In multivariable analysis, cystic duct stones (P = .013) and PTGBD catheter migration before the prescheduled removal time (P = .002) were identified as independent risk factors for cholecystitis recurrence after PTGBD.To reduce post-PTGBD recurrence in cholecystitis, caution must be exercised to avoid inadvertent dislodging of the PTGBD catheter. In cases of cholecystitis with cystic duct stones, cholecystectomy should be considered only after careful assessment of postoperative risks. Instead, transluminal endoscopic gallbladder drainage could represent a promising option for the prevention of recurrent cholecystitis.

RESUMEN

Iliac vein rupture resulting from blunt trauma is rare but can be fatal and challenging to diagnose despite thorough clinical investigation and image workup. Here, we present a case of traumatic iliac vein rupture managed by emergent endovascular repair using a bare-metal stent. Low pressure traumatic venous rupture is different from arterial rupture, and a bare-metal stent can be a sufficient tool to control bleeding.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: In addition to vascular endothelial cells, vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) are subject to continuous shear stress because of blood circulation. The angiogenic properties of VSMCs in extracranial arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) may exceed those of normal blood vessels if the body responds more sensitively to mechanical stimuli. This study was performed to investigate the hypothesis that rapid angiogenesis may be achieved by mechanical shear stress. METHODS: VSMCs were obtained from six patients who had AVMs and six normal controls. The target genes were set to angiopoietin-2 (AGP2), aquaporin-1 (AQP1), and transforming growth factor-beta receptor 1 (TGFBR1). Reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and real-time PCR were implemented to identify the expression levels for target genes. Immunofluorescence was also conducted. RESULTS: Under the shear stress condition, mean relative quantity values of AGP2, AQP1, and TGFBR1 in AVM tissues were 1.927±0.528, 1.291±0.031, and 2.284±1.461 when compared with neutral conditions. The expression levels of all three genes in AVMs were higher than those in normal tissue except for AQP1 under shear stress conditions. Immunofluorescence also revealed increased staining of shear stress-induced genes in the normal tissue and in AVM tissue. CONCLUSIONS: Shear stress made the VSMCs of AVMs more sensitive. Although the pathogenesis of AVMs remains unclear, our study showed that biomechanical stimulation imposed by shear stress may aggravate angiogenesis in AVMs.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Pleural fluid adenosine deaminase (ADA) levels are useful in discriminating tuberculous pleural effusions (TPEs) from malignant pleural effusions (MPEs). However, some patients with MPE exhibit high-ADA levels, which may mimic TPEs. There is limited data regarding the differential diagnosis between high-ADA MPE and high-ADA TPE. This study aimed to identify the predictors for distinguishing high-ADA MPEs from high-ADA TPEs. METHODS: Patients with TPE and MPE with pleural fluid ADA levels ≥ 40 IU/L were included in this study. Clinical, laboratory, and radiological data were compared between the two groups. Independent predictors and their diagnostic performance for high-ADA MPEs were evaluated using multivariate logistic regression analysis and receiver operating characteristic curve. RESULTS: A total of 200 patients (high-ADA MPE, n = 30, and high-ADA TPE, n = 170) were retrospectively included. In the multivariate analysis, pleural fluid ADA, pleural fluid carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), and pleural nodularity were independent discriminators between high-ADA MPE and high-ADA TPE groups. Using pleural ADA level of 40 to 56 IU/L (3 points), pleural CEA level ≥ 6 ng/mL (6 points), and presence of pleural nodularity (3 points) for predicting high-ADA MPEs, a sum score ≥ 6 points yielded a sensitivity of 90%, specificity of 96%, positive predictive value of 82%, negative predictive value of 98%, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.965. CONCLUSION: A scoring system using three parameters may be helpful in guiding the differential diagnosis between high-ADA MPEs and high-ADA TPEs.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Venous malformations (VMs) are the most common type of vascular malformations. Intramuscular venous malformations (IMVMs) are lesions involving the muscles, excluding intramuscular hemangiomas. The purpose of this study was to compare clinical outcomes between patients with IMVMs who were treated with sclerotherapy and those who were treated with surgical excision. METHODS: Of 492 patients with VMs treated between July 2011 and August 2020 at a single medical center for vascular anomalies, 63 patients diagnosed with IMVM were retrospectively reviewed. Pain, movement limitations, swelling, and quality of life (QOL) were evaluated subjectively, while radiological outcomes were assessed by qualified radiologists at the center. Complication rates were also evaluated, and radiological and clinical examinations were used to determine which treatment group (sclerotherapy or surgical excision) exhibited greater improvement. RESULTS: Although there were no significant differences in pain (P=0.471), swelling (P=0.322), or the occurrence of complications (P=0.206) between the two treatment groups, the surgical treatment group exhibited significantly better outcomes with regard to movement limitations (P=0.010), QOL (P=0.013), and radiological outcomes (P=0.017). Moreover, both duplex ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging showed greater improvements in clinical outcomes in the surgical excision group than in the sclerotherapy group. CONCLUSIONS: Although several studies have examined IMVM treatment methods, no clear guidelines for treatment selection have been developed. Based on the results of this study, surgical excision is strongly encouraged for the treatment of IMVMs.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Arteriovenous malformation (AVM) which is a high-blood-flow lesion with connections between arteries and veins without an intervening capillary bed, is difficult to manage. The ear is the second most common site of extracranial AVM. However, studies regarding the management of this condition remain lacking. The purpose of this study was to share managing experiences in our center and to investigate the treatment effect through a retrospective analysis of cases. METHODS: Among 265 patients with AVM treated in our vascular anomalies center between January 2008 and January 2021, 10 patients with auricular AVM were included in the study to investigate the lesion distribution, clinical stage, and treatment methods by performing a retrospective evaluation. RESULTS: Among 10 patients, five patients had AVMs distributed in the upper half of the ear, one patient in the lower half of the ear, and four patients in whole ear, respectively. Seven patients had Schobinger stage II, and three had stage III. One patient received surgical treatment only, four patients received sclerotherapy only, and five patients received both surgical treatment and sclerotherapy. The posttreatment status was checked as controlled in two patients, improved in seven patients, persistent in one patient. There were no worsening patients. CONCLUSION: Auricular AVM is a disease that is difficult to manage by one specific department, thus requiring a collaborative management effort from multidisciplinary team.
