RESUMEN

The amyloid cascade hypothesis suggests that amyloid beta (Aß) contributes to initiating subsequent tau pathology in Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the underlying mechanisms through which Aß contributes to tau uptake and propagation remain poorly understood. Here, we show that preexisting amyloid pathology accelerates the uptake of extracellular tau into neurons. Using quantitative proteomic analysis of endocytic vesicles, we reveal that Aß induces the internalization of fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3). Extracellular tau binds to the extracellular domain of FGFR3 and is internalized by the FGFR3 ligand, fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2). Aß accelerates FGF2 secretion from neurons, thereby inducing the internalization of tau-attached FGFR3. Knockdown of FGFR3 in the hippocampus reduces tau aggregation by decreasing tau uptake and improving memory function in AD model mice. These data suggest FGFR3 in neurons as a novel tau receptor and a key mediator of Aß-induced tau uptake in AD.

We have developed an automated sensing system for the repeated detection of a specific microRNA (miRNA) of the influenza A (H1N1) virus. In this work, magnetic particles functionalized with DNAs, target miRNAs, and alkaline phosphate (ALP) enzymes formed sandwich structures. These particles were trapped on nickel (Ni) patterns of our sensor chip by an external magnetic field. Then, additional electrical signals from electrochemical markers generated by ALP enzymes were measured using the sensor, enabling the highly sensitive detection of target miRNA. The magnetic particles used on the sensor were easily removed by applying the opposite direction of external magnetic fields, which allowed us to repeat sensing measurements. As a proof of concept, we demonstrated the detection of miRNA-1254, one of the biomarkers for the H1N1 virus, with a high sensitivity down to 1 aM in real time. Moreover, our sensor could selectively detect the target from other miRNA samples. Importantly, our sensor chip showed reliable electrical signals even after six repeated miRNA sensing measurements. Furthermore, we achieved technical advances to utilize our sensor platform as part of an automated sensing system. In this regard, our reusable sensing platform could be utilized for versatile applications in the field of miRNA detection and basic research.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a significant risk factor for heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). In this study, we explore the relationships between body mass index (BMI) and adipose tissue compartments such as visceral adipose tissue (VAT), subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), and epicardial adipose tissue (EAT), with respect to left ventricular (LV) structure and function in subjects with preserved LV systolic function. METHODS: Between January and December 2020, this retrospective study included 749 participants who exhibited preserved LV systolic function and underwent transthoracic echocardiography along with abdominal computed tomography. LV structural and functional variables as well as EAT, VAT, and SAT thickness were evaluated using echocardiography and computed tomography. RESULTS: SAT decreased, while VAT and EAT progressively increased with age. There were significant correlations between BMI and various adipose tissues, with the strongest correlation observed with SAT (r = .491, p < .001) compared to VAT (r = .371, p < .001) or EAT (r = .135, p < .001). However, EAT demonstrated the most substantial association with decreased LV end-diastolic dimension, LV end-systolic dimension, and septal mitral annular velocity and increased relative wall thickness (all p < .05), while VAT and SAT did not show significant associations with LV remodeling and functional parameters after adjusting for clinical variables. CONCLUSION: EAT is the most critical adipose tissue influencing LV geometric and functional changes, compared with VAT or SAT. Thick EAT is associated small LV chamber size, concentric remodeling, and relaxation abnormalities.

Antimicrobial resistance is becoming more prominent day after day due to a number of mechanisms by microbes, especially the sophisticated biological barriers of bacteria, especially in Gram-negatives. There, the lipopolysaccharides (LPS) layer is a unique component of the outer leaflet of the outer membrane which is highly impermeable and prevents antibiotics from passing passively into the intracellular compartments. Biodynamers, a novel class of dynamically bio-responsive polymers, may open new perspectives to overcome this particular barrier by accommodating various secondary structures and form supramolecular structures in such bacterial microenvironments. Generally, bio-responsive polymers are not only candidates as bio-active molecules against bacteria but also carriers via their interactions with the cargo. Based on their dynamicity, design flexibility, biodegradability, biocompatibility, and pH-responsiveness, we investigated the potential of two peptide-based biodynamers for improving antimicrobial drug delivery. By a range of experimental methods, we discovered a greater affinity of Arg-biodynamers for bacterial membranes than for mammalian membranes as well as an enhanced LPS targeting on the bacterial membrane, opening perspectives for enhancing the delivery of antimicrobials across the Gram-negative bacterial cell envelope. This could be explained by the change of the secondary structure of Arg-biodynamers into a predominant ß-sheet character in the LPS microenvironment, by contrast to the α-helical structure typically observed for most lipid membrane-permeabilizing peptides. In comparison to poly-L-arginine, the intrinsic antibacterial activity of Arg-biodynamers was nearly unchanged, but its toxicity against mammalian cells was >128-fold reduced. When used in bacterio as an antibiotic potentiator, however, Arg-biodynamers improved the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against Escherichia coli by 32 times compared to colistin alone. Similar effect has also been observed in two stains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Arg-biodynamers may therefore represent an interesting option as an adjuvant for antibiotics against Gram-negative bacteria and to overcome antimicrobial resistance.

Background: While research suggests that both negative affect and alcohol use are impacted by exposure to harassment (i.e., sexual harassment, generalized harassment or bullying), less is known about the effect of harassment on negative affect subsequently leading to alcohol consumption, particularly in young adults. We examined the mediating role of negative affect on the relationships between sexual and generalized harassment at school and alcohol misuse. Methods: Participants were 2899 incoming freshmen in fall of 2011 who completed a Web-based survey assessing demographics (T0), sexual and generalized harassment at school (T0-T2), negative affect (T3), and problems associated with drinking, binge drinking, and drinking to intoxication (T0, T4, T5). Separate hybrid path models were fitted in Mplus v.8.8 for generalized harassment and sexual harassment and each outcome. Results: Mediation analyses showed a small but significant indirect effect for the sexual harassment model (beta = 0.05, S.E. = 0.01, p < 0.001) and generalized harassment (beta = 0.03, S.E. = 0.01, p < 0.01), indicating that negative affect partially mediated the associations between harassment early in students' college experience and later problems associated with drinking. No significant indirect effects were found for the binge drinking or intoxication models. Conclusions: High levels of negative affect associated with harassment may contribute to longer term impact on problematic use of alcohol in young adults, providing evidence that the effects of harassment on drinking may partly stem from harassment's lingering effects on negative affective pathways.

Background: Although mild head of bed elevation (HBE) is a proven method to reduce obstructive sleep apnea, there is no study to apply mild HBE in daily life using an adjustable bed. Objective: We aimed to explore the applicability of mild HBE using an adjustable bed in daily life by investigating adverse events and discomforts induced by mild HBE. This pilot randomized trial additionally investigated the objective effects of mild HBE on sleep using polysomnography (PSG). Methods: Pilot randomized controlled trial. With a two-tailed alpha of 0.05 and a power of 0.95, the minimum number of participants for each group; control group slept on flat bed and study group slept on bed with mild HBE on follow-up PSG; was calculated to be 12. Considering a 20% follow-up loss, we enrolled a total of 32 participants (16 participants for each group). Setting: Dongguk University, Ilsan hospital. Participants: A total of 37 individuals complained of subjective sleep disturbance in the Republic of Korea, 32 of whom met the inclusion criteria between September 2021 to July 2022. 23 participants completed the study and participants were randomly assigned into two groups. Intervention: A mild HBE of 7.5 degrees using an adjustable bed was implemented. PSG results and questionnaires were evaluated. Results: There was no difference in the proportion of adverse events between groups after post-intervention which was adjusting mild HBE on study group. Changes in sleep satisfaction from baseline to post-intervention showed no significant difference between groups either. However, changes in respiratory distress index (RDI) (F = 6.088, 95% CI, 17.0% to 26.4%; P = .023) and apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) (F = 5.542, 95% CI, 13.6% to 23.5%; P = .029) were significantly different. Conclusions: Mild HBE is an implementable method for changing sleep posture without definitely causing discomfort or worsening sleep satisfaction. Since an easily applicable way to implement mild HBE using an adjustable bed in daily life reduces RDI and AHI in both subjects complaining of sleep disturbance and obstructive sleep apnea, it can be an alternative treatment for obstructive sleep apnea.

Background: Therapeutic proteins and peptides offer great advantages compared to traditional synthetic molecular drugs. However, stable protein loading and precise control of protein release pose significant challenges due to the extensive range of physicochemical properties inherent to proteins. The development of a comprehensive protein delivery strategy becomes imperative accounting for the diverse nature of therapeutic proteins. Methods: Biodynamers are amphiphilic proteoid dynamic polymers consisting of amino acid derivatives connected through pH-responsive dynamic covalent chemistry. Taking advantage of the amphiphilic nature of the biodynamers, PNCs and DEs were possible to be prepared and investigated to compare the delivery efficiency in drug loading, stability, and cell uptake. Results: As a result, the optimized PNCs showed 3-fold encapsulation (<90%) and 5-fold loading capacity (30%) compared to DE-NPs. PNCs enhanced the delivery efficiency into the cells but aggregated easily on the cell membrane due to the limited stability. Although DE-NPs were limited in loading capacity compared to PNCs, they exhibit superior adaptability in stability and capacity for delivering a wider range of proteins compared to PNCs. Conclusion: Our study highlights the potential of formulating both PNCs and DE-NPs using the same biodynamers, providing a comparative view on protein delivery efficacy using formulation methods.

Various bioelectronic noses have been recently developed for mimicking human olfactory systems. However, achieving direct monitoring of gas-phase molecules remains a challenge for the development of bioelectronic noses due to the instability of receptor and the limitations of its surrounding microenvironment. Here, we report a MXene/hydrogel-based bioelectronic nose for the sensitive detection of liquid and gaseous hexanal, a signature odorant from spoiled food. In this study, a conducting MXene/hydrogel structure was formed on a sensor via physical adsorption. Then, canine olfactory receptor 5269-embedded nanodiscs (cfOR5269NDs) which could selectively recognize hexanal molecules were embedded in the three-dimensional (3D) MXene/hydrogel structures using glutaraldehyde as a linker. Our MXene/hydrogel-based bioelectronic nose exhibited a high selectivity and sensitivity for monitoring hexanal in both liquid and gas phases. The bioelectronic noses could sensitively detect liquid and gaseous hexanal down to 10-18 M and 6.9 ppm, and they had wide detection ranges of 10-18 - 10-6 M and 6.9-32.9 ppm, respectively. Moreover, our bioelectronic nose allowed us to monitor hexanal levels in fish and milk. In this respect, our MXene/hydrogel-based bioelectronic nose could be a practical strategy for versatile applications such as food spoilage assessments in both liquid and gaseous systems.

BACKGROUND: We examined factors contributing to the transmission of an acute respiratory virus within multi-use facilities, focusing on an outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in a movie theater in the Republic of Korea. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study involved a descriptive analysis of 48 confirmed cases. Logistic regression was applied to a cohort of 80 theater attendees to identify risk factors for infection. The infection source and transmission route were determined through gene sequencing data analysis. RESULTS: Of the 48 confirmed cases, 35 were theater attendees (72.9%), 10 were family members of attendees (20.8%), 2 were friends (4.2%), and 1 was an employee (2.1%). Among the 80 individuals who attended the 3rd to 5th screenings of the day, 35 became infected, representing a 43.8% attack rate. Specifically, 28 of the 33 third-screening attendees developed confirmed SARSCoV-2, constituting an 84.8% attack rate. Furthermore, 11 of the 12 cases epidemiologically linked to the theater outbreak were clustered monophyletically within the AY.69 lineage. At the time of the screening, 35 individuals (72.9%) had received 2 vaccine doses. However, vaccination status did not significantly influence infection risk. Multivariate analysis revealed that close contacts had a 15.9-fold higher risk of infection (95% confidence interval, 4.37-78.39) than casual contacts. CONCLUSION: SARS-CoV-2 transmission occurred within the theater, and extended into the community, via a moviegoer who attended the 3rd screening during the viral incubation period after contracting the virus from a family member. This study emphasizes the importance of adequate ventilation in theaters.

nArgBP2, a protein whose disruption is implicated in intellectual disability, concentrates in excitatory spine-synapses. By forming a triad with GKAP and SHANK, it regulates spine structural rearrangement. We here find that GKAP and SHANK3 concentrate close to the synaptic contact, whereas nArgBP2 concentrates more centrally in the spine. The three proteins collaboratively form biomolecular condensates in living fibroblasts, exhibiting distinctive layered localizations. nArgBP2 concentrates in the inner phase, SHANK3 in the outer phase, and GKAP partially in both. Upon co-expression of GKAP and nArgBP2, they evenly distribute within condensates, with a notable peripheral localization of SHANK3 persisting when co-expressed with either GKAP or nArgBP2. Co-expression of SHANK3 and GKAP with CaMKIIα results in phase-in-phase condensates, with CaMKIIα at the central locus and SHANK3 and GKAP exhibiting peripheral localization. Additional co-expression of nArgBP2 maintains the layered organizational structure within condensates. Subsequent CaMKIIα activation disperses a majority of the condensates, with an even distribution of all proteins within the extant deformed condensates. Our findings suggest that protein segregation via phase separation may contribute to establishing layered organization in dendritic spines.

BACKGROUND: Radiomics is expected to identify imaging features beyond the human eye. We investigated whether radiomics can identify coronary segments that will develop new atherosclerotic plaques on coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA). METHODS: From a prospective multinational registry of patients with serial CCTA studies at ≥ 2-year intervals, segments without identifiable coronary plaque at baseline were selected and radiomic features were extracted. Cox models using clinical risk factors (Model 1), radiomic features (Model 2) and both clinical risk factors and radiomic features (Model 3) were constructed to predict the development of a coronary plaque, defined as total PV â€‹≥ â€‹1 â€‹mm3, at follow-up CCTA in each segment. RESULTS: In total, 9583 normal coronary segments were identified from 1162 patients (60.3 â€‹± â€‹9.2 years, 55.7% male) and divided 8:2 into training and test sets. At follow-up CCTA, 9.8% of the segments developed new coronary plaque. The predictive power of Models 1 and 2 was not different in both the training and test sets (C-index [95% confidence interval (CI)] of Model 1 vs. Model 2: 0.701 [0.690-0.712] vs. 0.699 [0.0.688-0.710] and 0.696 [0.671-0.725] vs. 0.0.691 [0.667-0.715], respectively, all p â€‹> â€‹0.05). The addition of radiomic features to clinical risk factors improved the predictive power of the Cox model in both the training and test sets (C-index [95% CI] of Model 3: 0.772 [0.762-0.781] and 0.767 [0.751-0.787], respectively, all p â€‹< â€‹00.0001 compared to Models 1 and 2). CONCLUSION: Radiomic features can improve the identification of segments that would develop new coronary atherosclerotic plaque. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT0280341.

A black phosphorus (BP)-based reusable biosensor platform is developed for the repeated and real-time detection of cortisol using antibody-conjugated magnetic particle (MP) structures as a refreshable receptor. Here, we took advantage of the low-noise characteristics of a mechanically exfoliated BP-based field-effect transistor (FET) and hybridized it with anti-cortisol antibody-functionalized MPs to build a highly sensitive cortisol sensor. This strategy allowed us to detect cortisol down to 1 aM in real time and discriminate cortisol from other hormones. In this case, we could easily remove MPs with used antibodies from the surface of a BP-FET and reuse the chip for up to eight repeated sensing operations. Moreover, since our platform could be fabricated using conventional photolithography techniques and the sensor can be reused multiple times, one should be able to significantly reduce operation costs for practical applications. Furthermore, this method could be utilized to detect different hormones with high sensitivity and selectivity in complex environments such as artificial saliva solutions. In this respect, our reusable BP-FET biosensing platform can be a powerful tool for versatile applications such as clinical diagnosis and basic biological analysis by conjugating various antibodies.

BACKGROUND: Studies on the association between pleural effusion (PE) and left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) are limited. This study aimed to examine the characteristics and the clinical impact of PE following LVAD implantation. METHODS: This study is a prospective analysis of patients who underwent LVAD implantation from June 2015 to December 2022. We investigated the prognostic impact of therapeutic drainage (TD) on clinical outcomes. We also compared the characteristics and clinical outcomes between early and late PE and examined the factors related to the development of late PE. RESULTS: A total of 71 patients was analyzed. The TD group (n=45) had a longer ward stay (days; median [interquartile range]: 31.0 [23.0-46.0] vs. 21.0 [16.0-34.0], P=0.006) and total hospital stay (47.0 [36.0-82.0] vs. 31.0 [22.0-48.0], P=0.002) compared to the no TD group (n=26). Early PE was mostly exudate, left-sided, and neutrophil-dominant even though predominance of lymphocytes was the most common finding in late PE. Patients with late PE had a higher rate of reintubation within 14 days (31.8% vs. 4.1%, P=0.004) and longer hospital stays than those without late PE (67.0 [43.0-104.0] vs. 36.0 [28.0-48.0], P<0.001). Subgroup analysis indicated that female sex, low body mass index, cardiac resynchronization therapy, and hypoalbuminemia were associated with late PE. CONCLUSIONS: Compared to patients not undergoing TD, those undergoing TD had a longer hospital stay but not a higher 90-day mortality. Patients with late PE had poor clinical outcomes. Therefore, the correction of risk factors, like hypoalbuminemia, may be required.

Expressions of anti-Asian hate and racism rose substantially during the pandemic, which had drastic effects on the wellbeing of various Asian-American communities. Through the lens of bicultural and bilingual Asian human service workers, this study explores how older Asian adults perceived anti-Asian racism and developed coping strategies during the pandemic. Nested in an extensive study of bicultural and bilingual Asian human service workers and their experience working with older Asian adults during the pandemic, this study adopts Asian Critical Race Theory and employs a phenomenological approach.

OBJECTIVES: No clear recommendations are endorsed by the different scientific societies on the clinical use of repeat coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) in patients with non-obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD). This study aimed to develop and validate a practical CCTA risk score to predict medium-term disease progression in patients at a low-to-intermediate probability of CAD. METHODS: Patients were part of the Progression of AtheRosclerotic PlAque Determined by Computed Tomographic Angiography Imaging (PARADIGM) registry. Specifically, 370 (derivation cohort) and 219 (validation cohort) patients with two repeat, clinically indicated CCTA scans, non-obstructive CAD, and absence of high-risk plaque (≥ 2 high-risk features) at baseline CCTA were included. Disease progression was defined as the new occurrence of ≥ 50% stenosis and/or high-risk plaque at follow-up CCTA. RESULTS: In the derivation cohort, 104 (28%) patients experienced disease progression. The median time interval between the two CCTAs was 3.3 years (2.7-4.8). Odds ratios for disease progression derived from multivariable logistic regression were as follows: 4.59 (95% confidence interval: 1.69-12.48) for the number of plaques with spotty calcification, 3.73 (1.46-9.52) for the number of plaques with low attenuation component, 2.71 (1.62-4.50) for 25-49% stenosis severity, 1.47 (1.17-1.84) for the number of bifurcation plaques, and 1.21 (1.02-1.42) for the time between the two CCTAs. The C-statistics of the model were 0.732 (0.676-0.788) and 0.668 (0.583-0.752) in the derivation and validation cohorts, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The new CCTA-based risk score is a simple and practical tool that can predict mid-term CAD progression in patients with known non-obstructive CAD. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: The clinical implementation of this new CCTA-based risk score can help promote the management of patients with non-obstructive coronary disease in terms of timing of imaging follow-up and therapeutic strategies. KEY POINTS: • No recommendations are available on the use of repeat CCTA in patients with non-obstructive CAD. • This new CCTA score predicts mid-term CAD progression in patients with non-obstructive stenosis at baseline. • This new CCTA score can help guide the clinical management of patients with non-obstructive CAD.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the effectiveness of coronavirus disease 2019 vaccination in high-risk facilities in the Republic of Korea during the period when the highly transmissible Delta variant was prevalent. Additionally, we aimed to explore any disparities in vaccine effectiveness (VE) across various types of institutions, specifically distinguishing between non-medical and medical establishments. METHODS: We examined 8 outbreak clusters covering 243 cases and 895 contacts from 8 high-risk facilities divided into 2 groups: group A (4 non-medical institutions) and group B (4 medical institutions). These clusters were observed from July 27, 2021 to October 16, 2021 for the attack rate (AR) and VE with respect to disease severity. A generalized linear model with a binomial distribution was used to determine the odds ratio (OR) for disease severity and death. RESULTS: AR was notably lower in group B (medical institutions). Furthermore, VE analysis revealed that group A exhibited higher effectivity for disease severity and death than group B. The OR for disease severity was 0.24 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.03-2.16) for group A and 0.27 (95% CI, 0.12-0.64) for group B, with the OR for death at 0.12 (95% CI, 0.01-1.32) in group A and 0.34 (95% CI, 0.14-0.87) in group B. CONCLUSION: Although VE may vary across institutions, our findings underscore the importance of implementing vaccinations in high-risk facilities. Customized vaccination programs, tailored response plans, and competent management personnel are essential for effectively addressing and mitigating public health challenges.

BACKGROUND: The number of confirmed cases of individuals with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection increased rapidly due to the Omicron variant. Correctional facilities are vulnerable to infectious diseases, and they introduced rapid antigen tests (RATs) to allow for early detection and rapid response. We aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance and usefulness of SARS-CoV-2 RATs in newly incarcerated people. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study at correctional facilities in Korea from 9 March to 22 May 2022. The study population was newly incarcerated people who were divided into two groups. In one group, 799 paired SARS-CoV-2 RATs and real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) were conducted simultaneously in 522 individuals in March 2022. In the other group, 4,034 paired RATs and RT-PCR consecutively in 4,034 participants; only individuals with negative RATs results underwent RT-PCR from April to May 2022. We analyzed data using descriptive statistics and a logistic regression model. RESULTS: Among the 799 specimens in March, RT-PCR was positive in 72 (9.0%), and among the 4,034 specimens in April - May 2022, RT-PCR was positive in 40 (1.0%). Overall, the RATs had a sensitivity of 58.3%, specificity of 100.0%, positive predictive value (PPV) of 100.0%, and negative predictive value (NPV) of 96.0%. Asymptomatic individuals constituted 98.2% of the study group, and symptomatic individuals 1.8%. In asymptomatic cases, the sensitivity of RATs was 52.5%, specificity was 100.0%, PPV was 100.0%, and NPV was 96.3%. In symptomatic cases, the sensitivity of RATs was 84.6%, specificity was 100.0%, PPV was 100.0%, and NPV was 33.3%. Sensitivity (P = 0.034) and NPV (P = 0.004) differed significantly according to the presence and absence of symptoms, and the F1 score was the highest at 0.9 in symptomatic individuals in March. There was a positive linear trend in the proportion of false-negative RATs in newly incarcerated people following the weekly incidence of SARS-CoV-2 (P = 0.033). The best-associated predictors of RATs for SARS-CoV-2 infection involved symptoms, timing of sample collection, and repeat testing. CONCLUSION: Sensitivity and NPV significantly depend on whether symptoms are present, and the percentage of false negatives is correlated with the incidence. Thus, using RATs should be adjusted according to the presence or absence of symptoms and the incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the community. RATs could be a useful screening tool as an effective first-line countermeasure because they can rapidly identify infectious patients and minimize SARS-CoV-2 transmission in correctional facilities.

BACKGROUND: Acute worsening of cardiac function frequently leads to kidney dysfunction. This study aimed to identify clinical and imaging parameters associated with impaired kidney function in patients with acute decompensated heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). METHODS: Data from 131 patients hospitalized with acute decompensated HFrEF (left ventricular ejection fraction, < 40%) were analyzed. Patients were divided into two groups according to the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) at admission (those with preserved kidney function [GFR ≥ 60 mL/min/1.73 m²] and those with reduced kidney function [GFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m²]). Various echocardiographic parameters and perirenal fat thicknesses were assessed by computed tomography. RESULTS: There were 71 patients with preserved kidney function and 60 patients with reduced kidney function. Increased age (odds ratio [OR], 1.07; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.04-1.12; p = 0.005), increased log N-terminal pro b-type natriuretic peptide (OR, 1.74; 95% CI, 1.14-2.66; p = 0.010), and increased perirenal fat thickness (OR, 1.19; 95% CI, 1.10-1.29; p < 0.001) were independently associated with reduced kidney function, even after adjusting for variable clinical and echocardiographic parameters. The optimal average perirenal fat thickness cut-off value of > 12 mm had a sensitivity of 55% and specificity of 83% for kidney dysfunction prediction. CONCLUSIONS: Thick perirenal fat was independently associated with impaired kidney function in patients hospitalized for acute decompensated HFrEF. Measurement of perirenal fat thickness may be a promising imaging marker for the detection of HFrEF patients who are more susceptible to kidney dysfunction.
