Objectives: Estimating the number of deaths caused by smoking is crucial for developing and evaluating tobacco control and smoking cessation policies. This study aimed to determine smoking-attributable mortality (SAM) in Korea in 2020. Methods: Four large-scale cohorts from Korea were analyzed. A Cox proportional-hazards model was used to determine the hazard ratios (HRs) of smoking-related death. By conducting a meta-analysis of these HRs, the pooled HRs of smoking-related death for 41 diseases were estimated. Population-attributable fractions (PAFs) were calculated based on the smoking prevalence for 1995 in conjunction with the pooled HRs. Subsequently, SAM was derived using the PAF and the number of deaths recorded for each disease in 2020. Results: The pooled HR for all-cause mortality attributable to smoking was 1.73 for current male smokers (95% CI, 1.532-1.954) and 1.631 for current female smokers (95% CI, 1.371-1.94). Smoking accounted for 33.2% of all-cause deaths in men and 4.6% in women. Additionally, it was a factor in 71.8% of male lung cancer deaths and 11.9% of female lung cancer deaths. In 2020, smoking was responsible for 53,930 male deaths and 6,283 female deaths, totaling 60,213 deaths. Conclusions: Cigarette smoking was responsible for a significant number of deaths in Korea in 2020. Monitoring the impact and societal burden of smoking is essential for effective tobacco control and harm prevention policies.

BACKGROUND: Nurses' satisfaction has an impact on organizational and patient outcomes. Integrated care system in South Korea was established in 2015 to improve care quality and decrease caregiving burden. Since then, nurses' satisfaction has increased due to an increase in nursing staffing. However, besides nurse staffing, various work environments still affect nurse satisfaction. METHODS: Individual online surveys were conducted with participants to determine their personal characteristics, work environments, and hospital characteristics. We used mixed-effects linear regression equation contained both fixed and random effects. RESULTS: This study included 2,913 nurses from 119 hospitals. Their average job satisfaction was less than 6 points out of 10 points. Age, shift type, perceived workload, and delegation criteria were significant factors influencing nurses' satisfaction. There was no significant factor among hospital characteristics. The satisfaction level of nurses was high for no-night rotating shift, low perceived workload, and clear delegation criteria. CONCLUSIONS: Nurses' satisfaction is affected by several work environmental factors. Low nurse satisfaction has a substantial impact on both patients and nurses. Therefore, nurse managers and hospitals should determine factors influencing their satisfaction and develop strategies to improve their satisfaction.

Introduction: This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of COVID-19 transmission dynamics using an infection network derived from epidemiological data in South Korea, covering the period from January 3, 2020, to July 11, 2021. The network illustrates infector-infectee relationships and provides invaluable insights for managing and mitigating the spread of the disease. However, significant missing data hinder conventional analysis of such networks from epidemiological surveillance. Methods: To address this challenge, this article suggests a novel approach for categorizing individuals into four distinct groups, based on the classification of their infector or infectee status as either traced or untraced cases among all confirmed cases. The study analyzes the changes in the infection networks among untraced and traced cases across five distinct periods. Results: The four types of cases emphasize the impact of various factors, such as the implementation of public health strategies and the emergence of novel COVID-19 variants, which contribute to the propagation of COVID-19 transmission. One of the key findings is the identification of notable transmission patterns in specific age groups, particularly in those aged 20-29, 40-69, and 0-9, based on the four type classifications. Furthermore, we develop a novel real-time indicator to assess the potential for infectious disease transmission more effectively. By analyzing the lengths of connected components, this indicator facilitates improved predictions and enables policymakers to proactively respond, thereby helping to mitigate the effects of the pandemic on global communities. Conclusion: This study offers a novel approach to categorizing COVID-19 cases, provides insights into transmission patterns, and introduces a real-time indicator for better assessment and management of the disease transmission, thereby supporting more effective public health interventions.

We investigated whether SARS-CoV-2 infection is associated with short- and long-term neuropsychiatric sequelae. We used population-based cohorts from the Korean nationwide cohort (discovery; n = 10,027,506) and the Japanese claims-based cohort (validation; n = 12,218,680) to estimate the short-term (<30 days) and long-term (≥30 days) risks of neuropsychiatric outcomes after SARS-CoV-2 infection compared with general population groups or external comparators (people with another respiratory infection). Using exposure-driven propensity score matching, we found that both the short- and long-term risks of developing neuropsychiatric sequelae were elevated in the discovery cohort compared with the general population and those with another respiratory infection. A range of conditions including Guillain-Barré syndrome, cognitive deficit, insomnia, anxiety disorder, encephalitis, ischaemic stroke and mood disorder exhibited a pronounced increase in long-term risk. Factors such as mild severity of COVID-19, increased vaccination against COVID-19 and heterologous vaccination were associated with reduced long-term risk of adverse neuropsychiatric outcomes. The time attenuation effect was the strongest during the first six months after SARS-CoV-2 infection, and this risk remained statistically significant for up to one year in Korea but beyond one year in Japan. The associations observed were replicated in the validation cohort. Our findings contribute to the growing evidence base on long COVID by considering ethnic diversity.

Introduction: Mitigating the spread of infectious diseases is of paramount concern for societal safety, necessitating the development of effective intervention measures. Epidemic simulation is widely used to evaluate the efficacy of such measures, but realistic simulation environments are crucial for meaningful insights. Despite the common use of contact-tracing data to construct realistic networks, they have inherent limitations. This study explores reconstructing simulation networks using link prediction methods as an alternative approach. Methods: The primary objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of intervention measures on the reconstructed network, focusing on the 2015 MERS-CoV outbreak in South Korea. Contact-tracing data were acquired, and simulation networks were reconstructed using the graph autoencoder (GAE)-based link prediction method. A scale-free (SF) network was employed for comparison purposes. Epidemic simulations were conducted to evaluate three intervention strategies: Mass Quarantine (MQ), Isolation, and Isolation combined with Acquaintance Quarantine (AQ + Isolation). Results: Simulation results showed that AQ + Isolation was the most effective intervention on the GAE network, resulting in consistent epidemic curves due to high clustering coefficients. Conversely, MQ and AQ + Isolation were highly effective on the SF network, attributed to its low clustering coefficient and intervention sensitivity. Isolation alone exhibited reduced effectiveness. These findings emphasize the significant impact of network structure on intervention outcomes and suggest a potential overestimation of effectiveness in SF networks. Additionally, they highlight the complementary use of link prediction methods. Discussion: This innovative methodology provides inspiration for enhancing simulation environments in future endeavors. It also offers valuable insights for informing public health decision-making processes, emphasizing the importance of realistic simulation environments and the potential of link prediction methods.

BACKGROUND: Industrial biomanufacturing of value-added products using CO2 as a carbon source is considered more sustainable, cost-effective and resource-efficient than using common carbohydrate feedstocks. Cupriavidus necator H16 is a representative H2-oxidizing lithoautotrophic bacterium that can be utilized to valorize CO2 into valuable chemicals and has recently gained much attention as a promising platform host for versatile C1-based biomanufacturing. Since this microbial platform is genetically tractable and has a high-flux carbon storage pathway, it has been engineered to produce a variety of valuable compounds from renewable carbon sources. In this study, the bacterium was engineered to produce resveratrol autotrophically using an artificial phenylpropanoid pathway. RESULTS: The heterologous genes involved in the resveratrol biosynthetic pathway-tyrosine ammonia lyase (TAL), 4-coumaroyl CoA ligase (4CL), and stilbene synthase (STS) -were implemented in C. necator H16. The overexpression of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), disruption of the PHB synthetic pathway, and an increase in the copy number of STS genes enhanced resveratrol production. In particular, the increased copies of VvSTS derived from Vitis vinifera resulted a 2-fold improvement in resveratrol synthesis from fructose. The final engineered CR-5 strain produced 1.9 mg/L of resveratrol from CO2 and tyrosine via lithoautotrophic fermentation. CONCLUSIONS: To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to describe the valorization of CO2 into polyphenolic compounds by engineering a phenylpropanoid pathway using the lithoautotrophic bacterium C. necator H16, demonstrating the potential of this strain a platform for sustainable chemical production.

Rationale & Objective: This study aimed to assess the effect of exposure to organic pollutants in adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Study Design: This was a cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis. Setting and Participants: Forty adults enrolled in the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort (CRIC). Exposures: Exposure at baseline and longitudinally to various organic chemical pollutants. Outcomes: The outcomes were as follows: death; composite of congestive heart failure, myocardial infarction, and stroke; event-free survival from kidney failure or ≥50% decline in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR); and longitudinal trajectory of eGFR. Analytical Approach: We used high-performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry to measure urinary concentrations of bisphenols, phthalates, organophosphate pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, melamine, and cyanuric acid at years 1, 3, and 5 after enrollment in the CRIC. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression were used to examine the association of individual compounds and classes of pollutants with the outcomes. The Cox proportional hazards model and Kaplan-Meier method were used to calculate hazard ratios and 95% CIs for each class of pollutants. Results: Median baseline eGFR and urinary protein-to-creatinine ratio were 33 mL/min/1.73 m2 and 0.58 mg/g, respectively. Of 52 compounds assayed, 30 were detectable in ≥50% of participants. Urinary chemical concentrations were comparable in patients with CKD and healthy individuals from contemporaneous National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey cohorts. Phthalates were the only class with a trend toward higher exposure in patients with CKD. There was an inverse relationship between exposure and the eGFR slopes for bisphenol F, mono-(3-carboxypropyl) phthalate, mono-benzyl phthalate, mono-[2-(carboxymethyl)hexyl] phthalate, and melamine. There were no associations between organic pollutant exposure and cardiovascular outcomes. Limitations: Small sample size, evaluation of single rather than combined exposures. Conclusions: Simultaneous measurement of multiple organic pollutants in adults with CKD is feasible. Exposure levels are comparable with healthy individuals. Select contaminants, especially in the phthalate class, may be associated with more rapid deterioration in kidney function.


The effect of exposure to organic pollutants has not been studied in adults with chronic kidney disease. (CKD). To fill this gap, we measured the exposure to a wide range of chemicals that are found in plastics, personal care products, and food preparation. Overall, the exposure was similar to that noted in the healthy population living in the United States. Only select compounds, mainly phthalates, demonstrated a trend with a more rapid decline in kidney function. These findings provide a useful reference for future studies that aim to evaluate organic pollutant exposure in patients with CKD. This is significant because these exposures represent a modifiable risk factor for disease progression through alterations in diet or lifestyle.

Introduction: Quantifying the transmissibility over time, particularly by region and age, using parameters such as serial interval and time-varying reproduction number, helps in formulating targeted interventions. Moreover, considering the impact of geographical factors on transmission provides valuable insights into the effectiveness of control measures. Methods: Drawing on a comprehensive dataset of COVID-19 cases in South Korea, we analyzed transmission dynamics with a focus on age and regional variations. The dataset, compiled through the efforts of dedicated epidemiologists, includes information on symptom onset dates, enabling detailed investigations. The pandemic was divided into distinct phases, aligning with changes in policies, emergence of variants, and vaccination efforts. We analyzed various interventions such as social distancing, vaccination rates, school closures, and population density. Key parameters like serial interval, heatmaps, and time-varying reproduction numbers were used to quantify age and region-specific transmission trends. Results: Analysis of transmission pairs within age groups highlighted the significant impact of school closure policies on the spread among individuals aged 0-19. This analysis also shed light on transmission dynamics within familial and educational settings. Changes in confirmed cases over time revealed a decrease in spread among individuals aged 65 and older, attributed to higher vaccination rates. Conversely, densely populated metropolitan areas experienced an increase in confirmed cases. Examination of time-varying reproduction numbers by region uncovered heterogeneity in transmission patterns, with regions implementing strict social distancing measures showing both increased confirmed cases and delayed spread, indicating the effectiveness of these policies. Discussion: Our findings underscore the importance of evaluating and tailoring epidemic control policies based on key COVID-19 parameters. The analysis of social distancing measures, school closures, and vaccine impact provides valuable insights into controlling transmission. By quantifying the impact of these interventions on different age groups and regions, we contribute to the ongoing efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic effectively.

As thermoplastic, nontoxic, and biocompatible polyesters, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are considered promising biodegradable plastic candidates for diverse applications. Short-chain-length/medium-chain-length (SCL/MCL) PHA copolymers are flexible and versatile PHAs that are typically produced from fatty acids, which are expensive and toxic. Therefore, to achieve the sustainable biosynthesis of SCL/MCL-PHAs from renewable non-fatty acid carbon sources (e.g., sugar or CO2), we used the lithoautotrophic bacterium Cupriavidus necator H16 as a microbial platform. Specifically, we synthesized tailored PHA copolymers with varying MCL-3-hydroxyalkanoate (3HA) compositions (10-70 mol%) from fructose by rewiring the MCL-3HA biosynthetic pathways, including (i) the thioesterase-mediated free fatty acid biosynthetic pathway coupled with the beta-oxidation cycle and (ii) the hydroxyacyl transferase-mediated fatty acid de novo biosynthetic pathway. In addition to sugar-based feedstocks, engineered strains are also promising platforms for the lithoautotrophic production of SCL/MCL-PHAs from CO2. The set of engineered C. necator strains developed in this study provides greater opportunities to produce customized polymers with controllable monomer compositions from renewable resources.

OBJECTIVES: Tobacco use ranks among the leading preventable causes of death worldwide. This study was conducted to calculate the mortality rate attributable to smoking in Korea for 2019 and to highlight the importance of tracking and monitoring smoking-related deaths for public health purposes. METHODS: Population attributable risk (PAR) was used to estimate the number of deaths related to smoking in 2019. PAR percentages were applied to the estimated mortality figures for various diseases, with PAR determined based on relative risk (RR). Levin's formula was used to calculate PAR, and RR was adjusted for age and alcohol consumption using Cox proportional hazards regression model to derive disease-specific regression coefficients. The analysis incorporated previously determined smoking rates from 1985, and use rates of novel tobacco products were not considered. RESULTS: The findings revealed a total of 67,982 smoking-attributable deaths in Korea in 2019, 56,993 of which occurred in men and 11,049 in women. The PAR of smoking for various causes of death in adult men was highest for lung cancer at 74.9%, followed by pneumonia (29.4%), ischemic heart disease (42.3%), and stroke (30.2%). For women, the PAR for smoking-related death was highest for lung cancer (19.9%), followed by stroke (7.6%), pneumonia (5.7%), and ischemic heart disease (9.1%). CONCLUSIONS: In countries experiencing rapid fluctuations in smoking rates, including Korea, regular studies on smoking-related mortality is imperative. Furthermore, it is necessary to investigate smoking-related deaths, including the prevalence of novel tobacco product use, to accurately gauge the risks associated with emerging tobacco products.

Autophagy is an essential lysosome-mediated degradation pathway that maintains cellular homeostasis and viability in response to various intra- and extracellular stresses. Mitophagy is a type of autophagy that is involved in the intricate removal of dysfunctional mitochondria during conditions of metabolic stress. In this review, we describe the multifaceted roles of autophagy and mitophagy in normal physiology and the field of cancer biology. Autophagy and mitophagy exhibit dual context-dependent roles in cancer development, acting as tumor suppressors and promoters. We also discuss the important role of autophagy and mitophagy within the cancer microenvironment and how autophagy and mitophagy influence tumor host-cell interactions to overcome metabolic deficiencies and sustain the activity of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) in a stromal environment. Finally, we explore the dynamic interplay between autophagy and the immune response in tumors, indicating their potential as immunomodulatory targets in cancer therapy. As the field of autophagy and mitophagy continues to evolve, this comprehensive review provides insights into their important roles in cancer and cancer microenvironment.

Various kinds of plastics have been developed over the past century, vastly improving the quality of life. However, the indiscriminate production and irresponsible management of plastics have led to the accumulation of plastic waste, emerging as a pressing environmental concern. To establish a clean and sustainable plastic economy, plastic recycling becomes imperative to mitigate resource depletion and replace non-eco-friendly processes, such as incineration. Although chemical and mechanical recycling technologies exist, the prevalence of composite plastics in product manufacturing complicates recycling efforts. In recent years, the biodegradation of plastics using enzymes and microorganisms has been reported, opening a new possibility for biotechnological plastic degradation and bio-upcycling. This review provides an overview of microbial strains capable of degrading various plastics, highlighting key enzymes and their role. In addition, recent advances in plastic waste valorization technology based on systems metabolic engineering are explored in detail. Finally, future perspectives on systems metabolic engineering strategies to develop a circular plastic bioeconomy are discussed.

BACKGROUND: ortho-phthalates and other plasticizers impart flexibility to plastics in food production, processing, and packaging; food consumption is a dominant plasticizer exposure pathway. Lower molecular weight ortho-phthalates are being replaced in plastic products due to toxicity concerns, but toxic hazards of and exposures to replacement ortho-phthalates and other plasticizers are poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: We measured 12 ortho-phthalates and 9 other plasticizers in conventional and organic U.S. food products to assess magnitude and profiles of contamination. METHODS: We measured plasticizers in 34 vegetable oils, 10 milks, 18 infant formulas, and 9 cheese powders from macaroni kits using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). We analyzed plastic packaging composition using FTIR spectroscopy. RESULTS: We detected eight ortho-phthalates and three alternatives ((1,2-cyclohexane dicarboxylic acid diisononyl ester (DINCH), diethylhexyl terephthalate (DEHT), and diisobutyl adipate (DIBA). Diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) was measured in all 71 products. DEHT had the highest concentration of any plasticizer (>10,000 ng/g in three oils). Oils had the highest total plasticizer (median = 770 ng/g, max = 14,900 ng/g) and milk the lowest (median = 88 ng/g, max = 120 ng/g). Organic milk and refined oils had higher median plasticizer levels than conventional. Refined oils had significantly lower concentrations than unrefined oils. Maximum contributors for every category were non-ortho-phthalates: DEHT (powdered infant formula and oils) and DIBA (cheese powder, milk and liquid formula). Plasticizers were not detected in packaging except epoxidized soybean oil in liquid formula lids. IMPACT STATEMENT: Human exposure to plasticizers is a significant public health concern. Nevertheless, sources of such exposures are poorly characterized. This study adds valuable information for estimating legacy and alternative plasticizer exposures from foods. The method developed for measuring DINCH, DINP and DIDP broadens the range of plasticizers other researchers may analyze in future work. The profiles of plasticizer contamination varied depending on the food type. We also document that food processing may be a source of plasticizer contamination in foods.

Estimating key epidemiological parameters, such as incubation period, serial interval (SI), generation interval (GI) and latent period, is essential to quantify the transmissibility and effects of various interventions of COVID-19. These key parameters play a critical role in quantifying the basic reproduction number. With the hard work of epidemiological investigators in South Korea, estimating these key parameters has become possible based on infector-infectee surveillance data of COVID-19 between February 2020 and April 2021. Herein, the mean incubation period was estimated to be 4.9 days (95% CI: 4.2, 5.7) and the mean generation interval was estimated to be 4.3 days (95% CI: 4.2, 4.4). The mean serial interval was estimated to be 4.3, with a standard deviation of 4.2. It is also revealed that the proportion of presymptomatic transmission was ~57%, which indicates the potential risk of transmission before the disease onset. We compared the time-varying reproduction number based on GI and SI and found that the time-varying reproduction number based on GI may result in a larger estimation of Rt, which refers to the COVID-19 transmission potential around the rapid increase of cases. RESUMEN

The elastomeric properties of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV), a biodegradable copolymer, strongly depend on the molar composition of 3-hydroxyvalerate (3HV). This paper reports an improved artificial pathway for enhancing the 3HV component during PHBV biosynthesis from a structurally unrelated carbon source by Cupriavidus necator H16. To increase the intracellular accumulation of propionyl-CoA, a key precursor of the 3HV monomer, we developed a recombinant strain by genetically manipulating the branched-chain amino acid (e.g., valine, isoleucine) pathways. Overexpression of the heterologous feedback-resistant acetolactate synthase (alsS), (R)-citramalate synthase (leuA), homologous 3-ketothiolase (bktB), and the deletion of 2-methylcitrate synthase (prpC) resulted in biosynthesis of 42.5 % (g PHBV/g dry cell weight) PHBV with 64.9 mol% 3HV monomer from fructose as the sole carbon source. This recombinant strain also accumulated the highest PHBV content of 54.5 % dry cell weight (DCW) with 24 mol% 3HV monomer from CO2 ever reported. The lithoautotrophic cell growth and PHBV production by the recombinant C. necator were promoted by oxygen stress. The thermal properties of PHBV showed a decreasing trend of the glass transition and melting temperatures with increasing 3HV fraction. The average molecular weights of PHBV with modulated 3HV fractions were between 20 and 26 × 104 g/mol.

AIMS: To determine the risk of pressure injury development in the intensive care unit based on changes in patient conditions. DESIGN: This retrospective study was based on secondary data analysis. METHODS: Patient data from electronic health records were retrospectively obtained and we included 438 and 1752 patients with and without pressure injury, respectively, among those admitted to the medical and surgical intensive care units (ICUs) from January 2017-February 2020. Changes in patient conditions were analysed based on the first and last objective data values from the day of ICU admission to the day before the onset of pressure injury and categorised as follows: improved, maintained normal, exacerbated and unchanged. Logistic regression was performed to identify the significant predictors of pressure injury development based on 11 variables. RESULTS: The 11 selected variables were age, body mass index, activity, acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II score, nursing severity level, pulse and albumin, haematocrit, C-reactive protein, total bilirubin and blood urea nitrogen levels. The risk for a pressure injury was high with exacerbation of or persistently abnormal levels of nursing severity, albumin, haematocrit, C-reactive protein, blood urea nitrogen and pulse >100 beat/min. CONCLUSION: Periodic monitoring of haematological variables is important for preventing pressure injury in the intensive care unit. REPORTING METHOD: The study followed STROBE guidelines. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: This study contributes to the utilisation of patient data from electronic health records. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: In addition to other pressure injury risk assessment tools, ICU nurses can help prevent pressure injuries by assessing patients' blood test results, thereby promoting patient safety and enhancing the efficacy of nursing practice.

Occurrence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as benzene in personal care products is a topic of public health concern. Sunscreen products are extensively used to protect skin and hair from UV radiation from sun light. Nevertheless, little is known about exposure doses and risks of VOCs present in sunscreens. In this study, we determined the concentrations of and exposure to three VOCs, namely benzene, toluene and styrene, in 50 sunscreen products marketed in the United States. Benzene, toluene and styrene were found in 80 %, 92 % and 58 %, respectively, of the samples analyzed at mean concentrations of 45.8 ng/g (range: 0.007-862), 89.0 ng/g (range: 0.006-470) and 161 ng/g (range: 0.006-1650), respectively. The mean dermal exposure doses (DEDs) to benzene, toluene and styrene of children/teenagers were 68.3, 133 and 441 ng/kg-bw/d, respectively, whereas those of adults were 48.7, 94.6 and 171 ng/kg-bw/d, respectively. The lifetime cancer risk from benzene concentrations present in 22 sunscreen products (44 % of the samples) for children/teenagers and 19 sunscreen products (38 %) for adults, exceeded the acceptable benchmark risk level (1.0 × 10-6). This is the first study to comprehensively assess the concentrations of and risks to benzene, toluene and styrene present in sunscreen products.

Two-electrode (2E) system of the interdigitated electrode array (IDA), which operates neither reference nor counter electrodes, has great potential to miniaturize multiplex immunoassay in a microfluidic chip for point-of-care testing. However, it is necessary to firmly immobilize the mediator layer on IDA made of indium tin oxide (ITO) which is chemically inert. It is important because the mediator determines the electrochemical potential in the 2E system, but the layer is easy to be detached during the washing processes of immunoassay. Here, we controlled the concentration of ethylenediamine (EDA) to generate a permeable and robust film to adhere to mediators on the ITO IDA chip. Electrooxidation of EDA yielded thin oligomeric ethyleneimine (OEI) film and it provided amine groups for immobilizing the mediator, poly(toluidine blue) (pTB), via common conjugation reaction. Despite repeated flows in the microchannel, which are essential for sensitive immunoassay, the pTB/OEI layer was hardly washed and still remained on the ITO IDA. Myoglobin was measured down to âˆ¼ pg/mL level. Therefore, the ITO IDA modified with the OEI film in the 2E system constituted a stable platform that withstands washing steps for sensitive electrochemical detection in the miniaturized immunoassay.

(1) Background: We investigated whether weight changes affect the association between smoking cessation and stroke risk; (2) Methods: Overall, 719,040 males were categorized into eight groups according to smoking status (sustained smokers, non-smokers, long-term quitters (quit > 4 years), and recent quitters (quit < 4 years)) and post-cessation weight change (-5 kg, -5.0 to 0.1 kg, maintainers, 0.1-5.0 kg, and >5.0 kg). The hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for incident total, ischemic, and hemorrhagic strokes, including subarachnoid and intracerebral hemorrhage, were calculated using Cox proportional hazard models; (3) Results: We detected 38,730 strokes (median follow-up, 25.7 years), including 30,609 ischemic and 9055 hemorrhagic strokes. For recent quitters with a >5.0 kg or 0.1-5.0 kg weight increase, maintainers, or those who lost 0.1-5 kg, the multivariable HR for total stroke was 0.73 (95% CI, 0.67-0.79), 0.78 (95% CI, 0.74-0.82), 0.77 (95% CI, 0.69-0.85), 0.84 (95% CI, 0.77-0.90), and 1.06 (95% CI, 0.92-1.23), respectively, compared with that of sustained smokers; (4) Conclusions: Comparable patterns were obtained for stroke subtypes. Thus, we strongly recommend quitting smoking, as weight gain after quitting smoking does not alter the stroke-related benefits.

This study aims to analyze the influences of momentum ratio (Mr) and confluence angle (α) on the transverse dispersion in an urban scale confluence channel from the numerical simulation results using the Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code model. By changing the momentum flux and confluence angle from the simulation results, the analysis focused on the relations between the vertical variations of transverse velocity and transverse dispersion. The high momentum tributary aligned the mixing interface toward the outer bank and created a strong helical motion, which transported the contaminated water along the channel bed and inflows into the recirculation zone. The high momentum ratio induced the large vertical shear in transverse velocity with a strong helical motion and increased the transverse dispersion. However, the helical motion persistence rapidly decreased as the flow reached downstream and led to a decrease in the transverse dispersion for the large confluence angle. Thus, the transverse dispersion coefficient increased with a high momentum ratio and low confluence angle, and the dimensionless transverse dispersion coefficient was in the range of 0.39-0.67, which is observed in meandering channels, for Mr > 1 and α = 45°.
